I'm a bit unsteady about the 2.2 roms. Ive been watching them for a few days now to see how they are coming along, however there is more then one to watch. So which one stands above the others. Also should I jump into a Froyo rom, right now I am running syndicate.
There is another similar thread to this. Lot of people seem to like syndicate.

Honestly, unless you really need flash for something or reallllyyy want to be able to edit your dock I dont see a huge benefit at this point. In some areas ive seen more speed, and less in others.
However 2.2 does have some nice little additions, using Mammon right now because I wanted the browser, but I think just using Firon's release and flashing in the i9000 browser would be better for me, as I dont like whatever GTG something touchwiz has been added to Mammon.
Until someone actually makes a real ROM instead of just a few modifications to fit there needs and posting it, its kinda pointless to put any real serious thought into selecting between them. There isnt any huge difference.

Ahh like I said I really didnt know much about them lol.
I tried out firon's 2.2 rom and it was pretty cool but slower than stock 2.1 and very buggy even though I wiped atleast 3 times. The best thing in firon's 2.2 was that the samsung caledar defaulted appointments to g-mail's calendar, that is something that should have came from samsung/sprint. That said syndicate was an awesome rom but it had it's share of fc's and issues while web browsing and the problem with my battery only lasting 1/2 of the stock time. I ended up going back to stock.

Instead of making a whole new topic I figured I should just post in here instead. I've been wanting to switch over to froyo for a bit now, but I'm not sure which rom I want to try. Since this topic is almost a month old I was wondering if anything had really changed since and which ones are most used.

All that has changed, is that they are getting more stable. There are still multiple good choices. If you want to just see what the community is doing go to the android development forum, which is this one, and on the right click on where it says stats. That will rearrange the threads from most replys to least and i would say the thread with the most reply/views is probably the most installed/favorite for the most part. Right now the viperrom and the quantum rom are the top 2 froyo roms by thread views but acs and ee did not start making their froyo roms until recently so I imagine in a month or so they will also be very popular.
Right now I'm enjoying the Quantum ROM, but once ACS starts with their custom kernels, and does a full blown Syndicate ROM, I'll switch to that.

How do you change the dock icons. I have only been able to do this using vipers rom. Can this be donel on stock, and can you set new apps to automatically sort a-z without having to do this each time I install a new app

Right now I am using Epic experience, so far I like it. Battery life is pretty good, pretty stable, occasionally gets some force closes. GPS is not working on most 2.2 roms. For me its not a big deal, but some people they are not happy about it.

I was thinking of putting together some quick video previews of the major custom ROMs floating around. Any requests as to which ones you'd like to see or think would be good to demo? It will mostly be a quick look at what each system looks like after a fresh flash, UI, menus, features of each ROM, what have you. Any input greatly appreciated!
I like this idea. Personally, I'd like too see UI overviews, a breakdown of what's been added removed, and a benchmark of some sort. (Yeah, I know, basically everything you mentioned).

um... all the ROMs do basically the same and almost all of them are on the stock rosie. You can see what's different in each ROM just by reading the ROMs initial thread.

I disagree. I'm new to the evo, and to android in general. The custom rom threads frequently seem to assume you are already familiar with the rom. I've seen a lot of changelogs, that explain what is new since the last version, but that doesn't help if I've never run the previous version.
I'm currently running fresh, mostly because I had no idea which one to pick. It's been working great, so I'm in no hurry to switch, but I am wondering what I might be missing with another rom.
I think this is a great idea. With the recent news about record android sales, there will be a lot of folks coming to the evo without previous android experience. This series of videos will help them a lot.

So it looks like they both have working 2.2 builds out in the wild now. My question is which one is better, or which one are YOU going to use? Let's try and keep the comparison here, that way we don't clog up both of these wonderful dev's threads.
I have never used either since I'm still stock. What was the general consensus before their new 2.2 builds?
I wouldn't know. They both have a huge following though. What I have noticed is that each one has very loyal followers. It almost seems as if its "either one or the other". But since it is now 2.2, it is a completely different ball game.

Fair question, but somewhat irrelevant in my opinion. My experience with stock vs cooked ROMs (MT3G CM6) is that the only real advantage is better speed. Sure, a few different user-experience changes, but that's all. An the stock ROMs are far more stable.
My stock Vibrant is already plenty fast. I'm rooted and can use root-only apps. My Dolphin browser already displays Flash. JIT will make it technically faster, but will I actually notice..? What would Eugene or TeamWhiskey add to that...?
Have not tried either but am running fusion by team wiskey with there kernel. Phone runs to good to worry about 2.2.

This statement is very inaccurate. When was the last time you installed a bionix rom?
I'm running the 2.2 and it is flawless. 2.2 offers a lot of improvements over 2.1 besides flash. If you don't know what those are then you really shouldn't be giving uninformed information.

Which one looks like stock? Both? I really despise the all black theme I see on the 2.1 Bionix roms. It just looks tacky in some places like the notifications pull down and it's too black. I see Macnut looks kind of like stock.. no screenshots included with either tho. Either way I've downloaded Macnut and I will be installing it ASAP. I'll try the other 2.2 rom next..

2.2 is A VERY BIG update. I dont know about Vibrant, but it should improve battery, it should run faster due to JIT, it has MANY extra features, and its compatible with 2.2 apps (new Gmail, Chrome-to-phone, youtube, flash...etc). move to 2.3 is not that big
that said, i trust TW more then Eugene.
Personally I think it's too soon to be worried about which one is better for general use. I'd give it a little time for each to get some additional polish unless you just enjoy flashing roms all the time every time a new one comes out. Chances are there'll be bug-fixes and tweaks to both in the next few days. Wait for that and more feedback from the early adopters and then decide...
When I got my phone used it had Eugenes rom on it, but I felt Bionix and team Whiskeys roms have been the best roms besides CM.
Put it this way I have only donated to 2 developers, #1 CM and #2 Team Whiskey.

It isn't flawless. Calendar doesn't sync. Holding back results in a FC (new screenshot feature not implemented properly). I've had inconsistency in the market. Don't get me wrong, I'm using it and I like it, but don't throw the word 'flawless' around so easily.
If you remove screencapture.apk that fixes the back button long press fc and you need to install calendar(something).apk to fix sync issues..
It all comes down to personal preference. My experience with Eugene's 2.1 ROMs are that they're TOO skinned. I personally prefer Team Whiskey.
To answer your question about which looks more stock, Team Whiskey hasn't really skinned the Obsidian ROM all that much, so it basically looks like Stock TouchWiz.

there is a fix already for both
I was using Macnut R7 and was about to flash R9 but Team Whiskeys downloaded faster. The major difference between R9 and 7 is, wi fi calling, modem and working gps with some minor tweeks.
If that is true then my comparison won't be too far off.
The biggest difference between the too is that Team W is a near perfect leak of the official 2.2 rom and Eugene's has some mods like built lag fix and a modified version of T.W. which for the most part is better than stock (not perfect but better; in my opinion)
That should really be what makes you choose which one you want.
Secondary things to think about is that, whiskey roms are known for getting official ota's which is nice if you want to get the official with little work, but its still kinda glitchy and slower than Eugenes, but not in a bad way. If you are running stock without a lag fix then you won't notice much. Eugene's rom is highly modded and some stock things won't work like if you still have avatar on your sdcard, and since his is a port there are some remnants of I9000 and cappy things floating around that can throw you off. But it is less glitchy atm and too me looks better. It has a lightly themed Modified TW. But you can get and install that yourself if you want there is a link in the macnut thread.
Hope that helps. I'm Running tw's rom now but I'm going to check out R9.
So, with the slow down in rom releases and updates due to stable builds that require nothing more. I thought I'd share the rom that I will be using for more then a day or too...I'm thinking long term here. I've found that I really enjoy ACS roms, Jaimie, King and settling on Koni III. I really like the stability, speed and options for customizing. I've found Koni III provides everything that other ACS roms have, except I really like the coloring and icons. They are smooth and everything functions normally. So i'm kind of freaking out, because now I have to use my phone like a normal person am I alone?

There's even been recent sense releases, in the past couple days. There's konis elite III, dark cocoa, king cocoa, and Vaelpak 3.2 .
To answer your question, AOSP (android open source project) is straight android, no HTC sense, bloatware from sprint. Avg sense rom = 180-210mb. Avg AOSP rom = 60-80mb. AOSP doesn't have any of the HTC Widgets, and has different dialer, email, and contacts apps (among other differences throughout the rom) . I suggest trying it out if you're bored. You'll always just be a nandroid restore away from sense!

That's why I ditched my T-Mobile phones (G1 and MyTouch Slide). I wanted something with a little more options. There wasn't anything better than CM over there although I think they have Desire Z roms in the G1 forums now.
I hope we get some devs to stick around. My decision to get an Evo 3d will be based on who goes and who stays. I'm a huge fan of Aamikam (MikFroYo) and Konikub so if they split there's probably a good bet I will too. Unless they still develop for the Evo. I know many devs who did dev work for the G1 long after they upgraded so it's not out of the ordinary.
My fingers are crossed. If there's no one who can make that 2.3 w/sense update super sexy like they did 2.2 w/sense then it might be time to split.

How come not ready for gingerbread? It's basically the same **** except for the cool lockscreen and the dope keyboard. Coming from being afraid of flashing ANY rom, I flashed Fresh in December, found it to be kinda buggy, then made the leap to CM7 right when RC1 came out, been HOOKED on it ever since. I'm on nightly 30 now and it's pretty dang stable. Make the leap, man
I've tried a couple of Gingerbread roms and ran into the usual Sprint VVM problem. While it's no big deal to call voicemail instead of using the visual, the V30 error that pops up every so often is a pain in the butt. I don't suppose there is a rom out there that won't give me that problem? I've tried the fix's listed in different threads and they (for me) work for a few hours and then I'm right back to the error messages. I don't use most of the Sense stuff, so it seems pointless to stay on a rom full of it. I've flashed at least 1 new rom a day trying to find something....
I havent flashed a rom in almost 2 months now, think ill go flash CM7 this evening though just to change things up a bit.

it's a lot more pretty than CM7 in a lot of ways but it can have it's laggy/buggy moments, particularly the launcher (little on the slow side)
I use a different launcher anyways. I dont like the MIUI iPhone style icons.
When i first try the MIUI roms, it was an amazing rom, but by the updates and all, it get bugged and bugged, i get back to sense <3.
I ran MIUI when it first got released, did not really like it. I installed it again figuring i have a long weekend i will give it a run. Damn i think i'm in love. the customization is crazy and quick. the rom is buttery smooth. I am having a few problems with handcent and plume but nothing deal breaking. Great rom my new daily driver.
I also installed this rom over the weekend and so far so good. I have all my apps sorted in folders which makes things much easier
Have been running MIUI since May, updating every week with new releases and I can't go to another ROM. I have tried but I end up running right back to MIUI. Really amazing work.
I've been debating whether or not to install it, haven't been able to take the plunge yet. Looks like a great ROM tho

The key I've found to MIUI is to find a version that runs bug free on your phone and stick with it until another comes out with an update that you really care about. I generally keep the version I'm on for ~1 month because I don't want to deal with the chance of that weeks minor updates screwing something up.

It is a good Rom, the dev team knows what they are doing. However with a stock interface that leaves a lot to be desired in the customization department..... I switched to adw launcher.... then figured why not go back to cm7 that has adw as it's native launcher.....
Um, did you notice the theme manager?
I was on Legendary and then SimpleROM but I'm ready for a change as long as it is stable (like the ones I just mentioned). I tried reading the threads but they keep changing and some are very long.
Just wondering if someone knows since I have been on only this 2 ROMs for nearly a year.

Also, MIUI.
And in the future, we discourage best ROM threads.
Depends on how you use your phone. CM9 beta 0 is stable for a daily ROM. But If your a power user like on your phone nonstop then you will find yourself wanting a charger.
Also gotta ask the question to you want to move to the MTD side.... best bet is to read up on everything, then test out different roms till you find one that you like.
Sent from a CM9 powered Epic.
If you want a good stable Rom the marcusant rom version3 and the shake and bake theme are a nice combo. Also cm9 is also kinda nice but its still in beta
Threads are long because everyone is trying to butt hurt everyone else, and there are a lot of useless postings (such as this one). Just be sure whatever rom you use has the appropriate thanks, documentation and GPL reference or you will get blasted even as just a user.
Just try them all, go nuts, have fun! Just be sure to do whatever you can to brick your device so you can provide yourself with the logical reasoning to upgrade as quickly as possible.
Sent from my, is it safe to claim, personally semi-tweaked (but not shared) and still therefore kanged??? sammiEpic running some CM9b0 shiznizzle.....
Thanks to all that offered good advise and options.
And to clarify a few points:
1 - I did not ask what was the best ROM (I know better than that).
2 - I respect the advise of the users here and do not wish to try them all. It simply takes too much time when all the ROMs say to wipe everything clean including data. It's a very long process putting everything back the way it was. The last 2 updates I did did not update my programs so I had to install them all manually plus their data. And as some of you may know, restoring from backup is not always a good thing to do.
So... I really appreciate those that provided a few options for me to try. Will do soon. And btw I alway provide feedback to the thread on the ROMs that I try. Comes from being a technology administrator for many years.
Thanks again,
tsp

CM9! Seriously it's ****ing ICS and you will be surprised by how stable it is. There are bugs but as a daily driver I personally haven't run into any.

I was on Legendary and then SimpleROM but I'm ready for a change as long as it is stable (like the ones I just mentioned). I tried reading the threads but they keep changing and some are very long.
Just wondering if someone knows since I have been on only this 2 ROMs for nearly a year.

In order for someone to answer this you have to let people know how you use your phone. Are you hooled on the Touchwiz interface? Then it would require some work and getting similiar apps for CM7, CM9 or any other AOSP ROM. If you just want to update to the newer firmware and like how your phone is running now, then Sleeper or CleanGB. If you need more app space then you want to go to an MTD ROM like CleanGB MTD. At least read the OP's of any ROM you are considering to know all the features.

CM9 ICS
I've been using CM9 ICS since alpha 2 and I had to Odin my phone back to stock for some weird reason. It was so strange seeing the stock interface after using ICS. "I can't swipe notifications away? What is this vertical scrolling? Bloatware???" So yeah, beta 0 seems good enough for me for now, plus the battery life is way better than stock.
CM9 for sure. The only real issue was the phantom voicemail but there is a fix for it now (as of today).
Loving the CM9. It's like a new phone!

Tried CM9 and it was allot more stable than I expected. However it still needs work and is not as solid as stock. The lag overall started to annoy me along with other things like garbled text messaging, 4G issues, occasional reboots, and no visual voicemail, but the devs are doing a great job.
I am on Clean GB right now and will jump back to Thunderhawk when Random updates to El30.
Dont flame my opinion, please.

Hmm, No. I tried the RC0, but not the Beta. I think I am picky and just need everything to work as good as stock or better.
