I have been agonizing on which phone to get as my husband promised me one for Christmas. Originally, I was aiming for the HTC Advantage as an upgrade of my Universal which Ive had for 3-4 yrs now. But due to budget constraints (I'm gonna be a mom soon), I lowered my budget and had to be practical as well -- I wouldnt be able to hold the advantage with one hand (assuming the other hand is holding the baby )
Anyway, I settled for either the HTC Dream or Touch HD. The price are similar here in NZ and I'm really torn because gsm arena rated both phone 9 out of 10.
I like the Dream/G1 for the keyboard having been used to universal's keyboard but I also like watching videos & listening to mp3s - Touch HD's 3.5 earphone output fits this and I think the Dream doesnt have video playbacks? I'm not particular about the OS, I'm used to Windows Mobile (and its bugs!) but I've heard that Android is quite stable too.
Can you please please help me decide*?
*This has been stressing me out and it's not good for my pregnancy
Ouch.. no one can give me advice. :-( I was hoping to get some suggestions from the forumers... but it's ok. maybe i'll just go for the dream because of the keyboard. thanks

Isn't a vote of 13 to1 in favour of the HD advice enough??
Sounds like the Touch HD would work well for you (but no keyboard).
No need to stress
oh yeah.. didnt really look at the poll... thanks... i will have to show this to my husband then
Thanks!
Finally!
Finally got the HTC Touch Pro 2... It's a long wait but it's so worth it. Thanks!
Hi all,
I'm on Wind Mobile in Canada (1700MHz 3G), so I don't have a lot of choices if I'm looking for an Android handset:
-Nexus One: Discontinued, and I'm not a big fan of the PenTile AMOLED screen
-Samsung Vibrant: Would cost me almost $600 after shipping/tax, and I've heard about reception issues
-Moto Milestone XT720: I like this phone, but it only has 256MB RAM, and Motorola isn't even promising to upgrade it to Froyo (it currently runs on Eclair 2.1). However, I will soon be able to buy this phone directly from Wind, so one advantage I would have is warranty...
Ironically, on paper, the HD2 seems like a better choice than all of these, because:
-I could get it for around $400 (which is about the same as what the XT720 would cost me)
-It can currently run 2.2, and will probably be able to run 3.0 in the future
-Good reception
-Biggest screen
-Best specs: 1GHz CPU and 576MB (!) RAM
-Possibility of trying out WP7 in the future
Now here's the thing.. I'm not at all interested in WinMo 6.5. So as a full-time Android handset, would you guys go ahead buy this phone? Also, will the custom ROMs have full access to the app market?
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks,
Faruk
Wait for the nand versions to come out and see how they work. If possible try to get hold of a friends hd2 and see if you like it.

The HTC HD2 is definitely the "Best-value" phone here since you can play around with both WM and Android.
However, I've seen Samsung Galaxy S go for $300-350 on Craigslist. Not that much more expensive than the HTC HD2 and you get a native Android phone (with AMOLED screen ). It's FAST too. I get 2200+ with Quadrant. I haven't experienced any call issue with my Vibrant. Don't use GPS that often but there's a fix for that (and lag).
If you like playing and tweaking your phones then get the HD2. If you aren't ready to deal with issues and scour xda for solutions, then do not get the HD2.
If you do get a HD2 your probably going to get a Nexus ROM on it anyway, so just get the nexus?!?!?!
Thanks for the replies so far, guys!
scbrother: I can get the HD2 for $100 less than the Nexus One... And the screen of the HD2 is pretty attractive to me. (Plus, it has real multitouch unlike the Nexus)
All I want to know is if Android on the HD2 is as good as a native experience. In other words, if I can just ignore WM altogether and use Android as my main OS without any issues. The camera's not a big deal to me, but I would like to have functional 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
I love my android HD2. My only experience using native Android was on the G1. This blows it out of the water (its also significantly newer hardware).
As someone said earlier: if you like to tinker and play with your phone and don't mind reading a lot to find your answers, then go for it.
I've personally had fun tweaking and reading to get my phone running flawlessly. I enjoy it and haven't used WinMo for months now.
Good luck.

Alright well I did a lot of searching to see if there are any issues with stuff that I actually care about (ex. i don't care about the 3MP camera limitation, and 65k colours is not a deal-breaker), and the only thing I could find which I wasn't sure about was "PPP".
Can anybody here tell me what PPP is for? Is this the VPN stuff, or is it a totally different kind of PPP? If it's to do with VPN then no biggie, otherwise could anybody let me know what it is? Thanks in advance
Edit: Never mind I think I finally found out... Apparently 3G uses either PPP or RMNet, and PPP is much faster but currently not as stable on the Android ROMs... I hope I got that right! Well, assuming that this is an issue which will be fixed, I'm leaning more and more towards the HD2... I know a lot of people are saying "wait for the Desire HD" etc. but the problem is that those of us who use 1700MHz 3G don't really have too many choices!
If you decide on an HD2, make sure you get a t-mobile version. The unlocked version does not support 1700/2100 3g. The Tmobile does.
Today is the day, when i said good bye to my HD2.
It has been qute an experience owning the device and trying all these different WinMo, Android SD and Nand, Windows Phone 7, but i guess i got tired of all those, what is working and not working rom, and now i deceided to get a Xperia X10...
I want to thank all of the developers, testers, and all of the users of this subforum. Great job guys.
Shame... I had an X10 for about a week before I got rid for the HD2 (my second HD2) ... The X10 has a few 'quirks' of it's own but nothing reflashing can't fix.
ithink hd2 its quite good device, since all my friend complaining baout that n this on their soner device...
HTC is more experienced for PDA things than
I've got HD2 with Rafdroid and X10 (updated to 2.1). After using X10 I still come back to my second phone (I find Sense much, much more useful than Sony's firmware - especially these things that decide about phone functionality - adress book (searching is much better in Sense), phone and so on.)
I owned a X10 before but i was disappointed.
lmao. So let me get this straight, you're going from HD2 to the X10? In case that wasn't clear enough...
YOU'RE GOING FROM THE HD2 to the X10?!

Yep, i got rid of my 9 months old HD2 for a brand new X10, which has everything right out of the box. I wanted to have android for so long and i have tried qute a few sd and nand builds, but still there is something not working. i.e. i must connect to wpa2 enterprise network everyday ... no build support that... sorry hd2 ....

imho, (and i provide phone tech support for virgin), you are correct to say its all the out of the box, but the build quality, mtbf*, useability, screen quality, reception and software are much below the Leo.
Don't forget that SE don't as a rule supply updates for their phones, and don't expect to update the rom on the X10 this centuary.
You would have made a better choice to go for a Wildfire S
Mean time between failures
If I was you, id try and sell the x10 and get a superior phone, perhaps an Hd2, if you need advice on running wp7 and android, we can help

What he said ^
Gosh guys, if he gets a new phone don't kill him over it. Fact is, our hd2 is non comparable to a true android phone. So it's obvious he's got a better android phone than us. Don't trash him about it.
PS. if any of you guys try to tell me that our hd2's are faster than android phones, root the android phone, tweak it, then flash a custom rom / kernel, then you'll see that android phone flying beyond what our hd2's can do.
niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Yeah I would think the HD2 the better of the two ?
X10 has locked bootloader - there are few custom ROMs and SE said they won't update the official Android in Xperia.
You wanted Android from the box - why not Galaxy S?

Because the galaxy s is known for it's hardware problems. However I find the problems insignificant in my case and opinion.
Now personally I find you choice of the X10 a bad one, as the desire, desire hd or even desire z would have been a better choice. But hey, congrats on the new device. :3
Hi guys! i'll be going to singapore soon to buy my htc hd2. Missed all the tweakings. Had an xda, then xda exec then got an htc shift (still with me now). Looking forward to have one soon.
You chahged hd2 for xperia? If I were you I wouldn't tell anyone about this stupidity. You are crazy, man!
When i had a Xperia X10 i waited 4 months for an update. And not to 2.2 or 2.3 but
from 1.6 to 2.1.(The first and last update for the Xperia X10 family.)
When i got the update guess what, still no multitouch, no adobe flash player, same laggy Timescape and Mediascape. And did not mention the BIG quadrant score: somewhere around 460-500, with the update.
So i did own a Xperia X10i for 4 months and i can say from experience that the HD2 android it is far better than the Xperia X10i.
This is only my opinion. I was happy to change the X10 for a HD2.
You did the opposite.Hope you will be happy with it.

oh by all means please Please do that. You know first getting access to root commands which we haven't, find an ability to change the spl (which we haven't) and finally porting android to windows phone 7 through something not named haret...

Let's be realistic. If you want an android device, get an android device. Get an HD2, but what's ruining the thread?
Users asking when can I get android like xda is waiting forever to serve your android needs.
Take my advice, get a device that runs android if you don't want the dell

Perhaps when the Dell Venue comes out it may be possible, since both devices should have very similar hardware.

I think if HTC HD2 (an android device) can be loaded with WP7, it's quite likely a WP7 device can be loaded with android.
HD2 is WM6.5
No, hd2 is with android, linux, meego, wm6 and wp7

I for one would love to see a dual boot DVP, WP7 and Android.
Yeah, I have an Android phone (actually 2), and I love it, but I've also been playing with WP7 and it's great too. I actually have a DVP on order.
The big thing for me though is the hardware.
The DVP is a BEAUTIFUL phone, and I love the form factor. There's nothing else like it.
I think the next closest phone would be the BB Torch (outdated crap and no AWS), the Pre series (crap that HP will kill, also no AWS), or the Moto Spice (POS Android 2.1 with locked Bootloader)
I know it's not possible right now and I'll fully enjoy my DVP when it arrives.
I'm hoping that someone will be able to crack the DVP (wasn't GeoHot supposed to do it at Pwn2Own?) and since the Android Venue is supposed to be more-or-less the same hardware (minus the sweet keyboard), hopefully it will be possible eventually.
I own a Galaxy Tab and would second this since someone brought it up. Before my Tab I was actually eagerly awaiting the DVP, mainly for its build quality and portrait slide-out QWERTY. Didn't get it in the end cos of the teething WP7 issues, and also because it wasn't even launched in my country till today; but I would have disregarded warranty issues and imported it if WP7 didn't have all those issues.
After using Android I realised it fit my usage pattern much better, but I'm still pining after the hardware of the DVP. Would be great to have the best of both worlds.
What is it with people getting defensive about the idea of having a Dell Venue Pro running Android? I had a Touch Pro 2 that ran Android, the HD2 runs Android and HD7, Sure I can always buy an Android device (which I do, I own a Droid Pro and a Nexus One) but the hardware on the Dell Venue Pro is probably some of the best I've had (Returned the phone after a few weeks due to it being WP7)
I've started a Bounty on Android on the DVP here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13920817#post13920817
Please, contribute if you can!
Yes, I also don't get why some people mind. I do own HTC Desire Z wich is great, but wow, the DVP is stunning! I love the way it looks and feels in the hand, and shockingly the keyboard is the best I've seen, even better than Desire Z's one. (shock)
There's nothing like it on the market, but WM7 is a deal breaker. That's why if someone ports Android on DVP, I sell my Desire Z in a heartbeat and go buy a Venue Pro!
So please, someone, do it!
Anyone try the rooting technique for the venue on a venue pro yet..? I may when my replacement for this one comes. I have been playing with some Droid ROMs, and funniest thing things is lots of these Droid ROMs remind me of the Energy ROM with HTC sense on WM6.5.. so if I can get Droid on my DVP, I may ditch WM7 until Mango update.

Why would a root exploit for android do anything to wp7? And how would you run it? All the root methods I'm familiar with are either all's (z4root, gingerbreak, etc) or require adb (superoneclick or manual methods), neither of which has anything to do with wp7

Not owning a Droid phone wasn't sure if you could get the DVP to "connect to pc" screen and then run some kind of technique to install android on top.. I stopped hacking and generally screwing with my phones when is went from WM to WP

Hi there, xda people!
I need some help with my decision. I'm looking for a smartphone with a big screen, Wi-Fi, 3G, good camera and a nice design. both of them are ok for my needs and the price doesn't matter. So wonder if you guys, the experts can tell me what the benefits of WP7 are and those of Android. And also: Xperia X10 in Black or in White
What also matters is the compatibility with a Mac and if the device is upgradeable easily and without hacking it.
Wp7 doesn't have many apps at all, and is pretty bland IMO.
It isn't very Customizeable, and for me would be boring only having one homescreen.
You could put android on the hd7 though, so it doesn't have to be a wp7 vs. Android debate
I have an X10i and my wife has the HD7, feel to ask away.
Just a few quick points...
In regards to hardware...
The HD7 feels *much* slimmer but I think it's kind of awkward. I think the curvature of the X10 makes holding the phone nicer. The HD7's curvature is all wrong.
The camera is much nicer on the X10 but a shame that there's no led flash.
The screens are about the same (obviously, HD7 is larger) but I prefer mine as the resolution is higher. But if you're going to use netflix, the HD7 is nice.
The HD7 has a far better touch digitizer.
Software...
You're going to get more Android bias by posting here. If you want to compare stock vs stock, the HD7 is better. No lag, no stutters, no random freezes for 5 seconds (also, not any room for customizing besides the order of your tiles). A lot of common apps I use on my X10, I've begun seeing on the wp7 app marketplace. If you can live without some apps then you would probably be ok for now. WP7 marketplace is nowhere near the size of Android's, but there's a lot less crap software to wade through too.
But with the X10 getting 2.3, I *hope* it changes (and the HD7 getting Mango in the fall). And if you decide to run a different rom, well, then it gets into a whole different scope of discussion.
Upgrade...
As far as upgrading any of those phone on a mac... You can't with the X10. MS has software to do it for the HD7. To upgrade the X10 on a mac you would need to use bootcamp... i'm not sure if there's a flash tool program to load roms for the X10 on the mac (maybe someone who works with macs can chime in here).
u've never thought about the Xperia Arc?

I had used HD2 from HTC for a while, and I honestly have to say I don't like WM much, the OS is slow and freeze sometimes.
I switched to HTC Aria (AT&T) few months ago and everything is great!, Android is much better with free apps and the ease to customize anything you like.
I upgraded to X10 today, and still looking for some ways to unlock it, my cell is AT&T.

Of those, I know she uses gmail. WP7 works perfectly with it. I'll check it out later - see how the search works with it (and labels, etc).
She doesn't use google reader but I think there are a couple apps that work with it.
I know she uses a calendar service on her phone but i'm not sure if it's google's or live's calendar. I'll check it out this afternoon but I think it works pretty good with google's calendar. From what I read, if you put something in on wp7, it sets it as an invite and not event. There's a setting on the web based google calendar to display invites.
There is a google maps app that someone made. It works ok, it shows traffic and all the basic stuff. Unfortunately no real navigation option yet.
eizonuts, I'm guessing the OP is on T-Mobile USA. The HD7 and X10i both work on TMO's AWS spectrum.
It's really hard to recommend one over the other not knowing what the OP is looking for software-wise in a phone. Not to mention that the X10 receiving 2.3 in the next month is huge (well, hopefully).
Thanks for the insight.
Im asking because I'm eligable for a hardware upgrade soon and I'm trying to swap my x10 for a win7 handset for a extended trial run.
Once I pick a platform I'll use my upgrade on a top end handset for that os
