Problems with modded kernels & voodoo - Galaxy S I9000 General

I have my SGS with eclair, rooted & lagfixed with OCLF,then i wanted to update to froyo ,so i disabled both things in the OCLF programm, then i flashed JPO and installed the speedmod kernel found in this page and did de OCLF lagfix, all was good until here, but my phone give me a 1600 quadrant,so i decided to undo again the OCLF and flash the last voodoo, when i did this my phone enter in a loop of restarting ,so i flash again the speedmod kernel and the clockworkmod said me that was an incompability and i need to do a backup and restore ,i did this and my phone was very very slow ,so decided to start again doing a wipe and reinstalling froyo, now the phone gives me error in quadrant and i have the feeling like the phone isnt "clean" and i want to restore it 100% stock, what i have to do?

I think the SpeedMod kernel required JPM8 to work.
Try booting into recovery and doing a factory reset.
Then reinstall the kernel you used before trying to install SpeedMod. You should then be good to go. SpeedMod assumes that you know what you are doing.
You can go to SamFirmwares and get an original kernel and reinstall that if you want but, you will have to use Odin to do this.
You can also download Darky's unthemed kernel with Voodoo and flash it using Odin (probably best and easiest option) to get a complete solution with least drama.
A little more complex but you can use Doc's kernel which I'm using with the SpeedMod kernel and getting about a Quadrant of about 1600 (more steps involved in installing these and you need to read instructions carefully) using the Universal Lagfix.
Your phone is not broken - temporarily missing in action but easy to fix.

the thing is mate that the phone is goes well, but ,for example i have some problems with wifi,i cant do a benchmark because its throws me an error in the I/O step, and i dont know i do not feel the phone as good as my father galaxy s with same firmware.

Have not flashed a custom rom since my Xperia X1...now I am tempted for Galaxy S

I have not been tempted to flash my Galaxy S, and I got stuck into a rut of flashing my phone every other week when I owned my Xperia (Win Mobo).
I thought my Galaxy S was fine untill I tried the new Nexus S in a store and realised how much mine lagged..
Now I am really curious as the the increase in speed from custom roms, as my phone still lags evey now and again (especially opening emails etc).
My stock Firmware is on 2.2 JP3, which is the latest available via Kies for O2 UK.
I have checked my phone and the 3 buttom Installer mode thing works.
So what do you guys recommend?
Should I flash my phone? Or are there not much differences?
I was looking at Supercurio's Voodoo 5.2, which looks good, what do you think of it?
Is it as simple as the instructions suggest?
Update.zip method (recommended; computer not required):
1.Copy the Voodoo package as /sdcard/update.zip at the root of your SD Card.
2.Reboot into recovery using the 3 button combo for your phone or “adb reboot recovery”
3.Apply update.zip
4.Enjoy !
Would I need to do anything else?
Does flashing a custom rom prevent me from returning to stock?
All advice is welcome
You can also update to 2.2.1 which is miles ahead of 2.2. Lag is almost non-existant. I used kies registry patcher to allow me to update to 2.2.1 jpy. I used the product code XEU.
As for flashing kernal/rom you can use odin or cw recovery. For cwr you need to have recovery 2e not 3e as i suspect you currently have. I flashed cf root via odin to get 2e recovery on 2.2.1 jpy.
Personally i have flashed mine with doc's rom from the kitchen with the speedmod kernal. I was using voodoo for months but find speedmod a little smoother. Either way both are good and to be honest 2.2.1 barely needs any lagfixes. It flies as is. I like the custom kernals because they drastically improve sound with the voodoo app. Both speedmod and the voodoo kernals support this.
Go to the samfirmware site. It has all you need (firmwares, pit files and flash tools like odin). And yes, you can always download the original firmware and flash with odin and get back to stock.
Hope this helps

Hey man, if i can i might just add some questions?
Does voodoo make full use of the 512meg of ram? is there message lag?
Im using a rooted android 2.2 with oclf (one click lag fix) would i have to uninstall this if i flashed my galaxy using rom manager? thanks for the help
Hey where would you download android 2.2.1? some of the sites look suss
Hey where would you download android 2.2.1? some of the sites look suss
Like samfirmwares ???
jje
sigh, ill have to register then? then again is there a way to root 2.2.1? my phone doesnt have the 3 button reboot recovery. So for 2.2 i installed z4root.apk from the internet on my phone to root it. would voodoo be better?
also as i asked before some websites say youll brick your phone if you dont uninstall anti lag programs before flashing, other websites dont mention it. What do you think?
Hey man, today while playing with my phone, i bricked it.... so i used odin3 v1.7 and flashed voodoo on my galaxy.
So far, voodoo has installed clockmod recovery and has headphone ampifiers. However i wouldnt say it was faster then android 2.2 with the oclf (one click lag fix). When i was using android + oclf my quadrant standrad score was around 1500 as is voodoo. I do notice less message lag though.
You might want to flash 2.2.1 from.samfirwares since you have odin. Then flash voodoo and apply lagfix. Always remove lagfix before flashing firmwares unless the new one had the same file system, eg voodoo and speedmod (both use ext4).

I don't know if it is your case (most likely) but in recovery 3e you can't flash unsigned update.zip
So, firt you'll need to either get 2e (with an old rom) or install something like speedmod-kernel. I've done the latter and it's pretty straight forward
then after, you'll be able to play around more (like installing ClockWorkMod for easier rom install)
if you have specific modem (like Bell's 850mhz), you'll also need to get the modem file (from samfirmware) and reflash it with Odin or you won't have any signals

How to completely reset the SGS

Hello
i'm actually using Doc rom based on JS5, with speedmod kernel K13c
everything seems perfect except 3G battery drain
some people suggested me to do a complete reset of the phone
i would like some tips to get a complete reset of my SGS
i've heard that the best way to completely reset the SGS is the following procedure
-> install 2.1 ROM with Odin (like JM8)
-> use Kies to obtain 2.2 or 2.2.1
-> install JS5 with Odin
-> install custom ROM
can someone confirm this ?
thanks for support

You SGS Toolbox, it has two menu items - one is to clear reset factory data (normal reset, sorry I dont remember exact name of this function in sgs toolbox) and the other one called Hard Reset and it also formats internal SD card, so back it up. If you use Doc's rom with one of the custom kernels, you can go to recovery and clear data there (this is hard reset without formating sd) There is also action "Factory reset" or something in default Settings->Privacy, but it's not reliable in my opinion.
EDIT: you can also flash things with Odin and set Repartition on, but be careful with this if you dont know what you do. Rather use sgs toolbox Hard Reset
thanks for your support
but why so many times in this forum ppl suggest to first re-install Eclair rom, then 2.2 or 2.2.1 and finally the custom rom to completely avoid bugs / fcs / batterydrain ?

Because most of recent rom on samdroid has one file to feed to Odin and this is not enough for repartition option, so you cannot make repartition with rom which has only one PDA file. Ppl just invented the way to do repartition by installing 2.1 first with three files in it and then install 2.2.1 or 2.2 without repartition. Hope this helps.

You only need to go back to Eclair if you have a major problem with a custom rom installed .

i've a custom rom, custom kernel but the 3G battery drain is quite "insane"
that's why i thought that i could try the Eclair solution
JM8 can be fine for this process ?

My journey with Galaxy S-Flashing,upgrade,rooting,custom rom

Hi XDA,
I learn alot from this forum,so it`s time for me to share my experience with Samsung galaxy s.
1.Flashing,upgrade,rooting,custom rom
I bought galaxy unbranded, unlocked with Froyo 2.2.I noticed that it`s pretty slow.Like every new user first thing is upgrade.I do it with KIES(spoofed KIES) and i upgraded to 2.2.1 JPY.That was great, very good version. Then i played with the phone.I read a lot about phones so i readed alot about flashing rooting and other stuffs.I didn`t try any other version of froyo, why this one works great.
Then gingerbread is out.I allways wait for stable version.I work as system administrator(on windows and linux),and i know what is the new version.Allways wait someone else is trying that and use their experience.
I waited untill JVH.Now it`s time to flash.I never used odin so i download odin and stock JVH version from Ramad post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901
Downloaded version with bootloader and NEE CSC.I flash it with ODIN (follow instruction on post)and everything is ok.
Now it`s time to root.I used CF root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
Pretty easy.
After that custom rom.My favourite is JUWE.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964672
I flash through CWM no wipe version 4.3.1 for JVH.It`s ok.Than i start to download custom themes, other stuff and i screwed my JUWE
Then i downloaded Ramad deodexed version JVO and i do root with CF root JVO.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948790
Flash it with ODIN everything work fine.
Last night i decide to flash with pit file. Here what i do:
First disable tweaks on kernel(tweaks application on CF kernel).Disable voodoo soung tweaks, disable driver load.Reboot phone to apply it.I don`t use ext 4.After that format internal and external storage.
Shut the phone and remove external sd card and SIM card.I go to CWM and do Clear cache and clear dalwik cache. After that factory reset.
Flash with odin with pit file.I use stock JVH rom again with bootloader from first Ramad post and i follow instructions on thread to flash it with pit file.
After that CF root, boot the system and don`t enable any tweaks.
Downloaded JUWE 4.3.1 JWH wipe,JUWE TW4 and Juwe circular baterry.Reboot in recovery.Flash JUWE 4.3.1 JWH wipe and boot phone.Reboot in recovery.Clear cache and clear dalwik cache.Boot phone.Reboot in recovery.Flash JUWE TW4.Boot phone.Reboot in recovery.Clear cache and clear dalwik cache. And finally Juwe circular baterry, flash it and wipe baterry stats through CWM.
And thats it.Everything working.
Thats preety much it.
Adviceon`t change custom rom alot.Stay on one rom and follow that.Be carefull with custom themes and other modifications.Use the rom that has allready stuff applied(CRT off, overscroll glow, themes, etc).
Thank for pattience while reading
Thank u for sharing, I've been using cm7 for 2 weeks now. It's unfinished business but exceeds all other roms in terms of speed & stability.
May I ask why did u advised not to flash a lot?
Sent from my GT-I9000 CM7 using Tapatalk
Let the gingerbread to bread as i saw on one post in forumThat`s why.I prefer to use one custom rom,one kernel and watch the development of that and do the upgrade with new versions.Butt that is just my opinion.

How To Install Clockwork Recovery

Sorry guys, I searched all over and it seems that either all the methods are outdated (2010), or I'm getting different opinions on how to do this.
I'm helping my friend root his fascinate, which we have done, however he told me he tried flashing clockwork via Rom Manager. I looked it up and it doesn't appear that's the way to go. He has no familiarity with Odin, however I do.
Can someone post a nice guide on how to do this, I found one that's really good but it's missing an "update.zip" file
Thank you in advance.
Put the phone into download mode, and then use Odin to flash the CWM odin image using the PDA button. The guides from 2010 should be just as valid then as now. Also, don't bother with Rom Manager, it regularly doesn't support our phone. You also don't need an update.zip file necessarily.
Never use the Phone button in Odin!!!
Thank you sir, I imagined this is the way to go since that's what I have done with my Droid Charge.
Will I lose recovery after I odin, if I don't install a customer rom and kernel in time?
is the latest OTA update rootable?
You only need to replace the kernel. The stock Samsung kernel on any Froyo+ (and some Eclair, IIRC) roms will try to nuke CWM on boot up.
The common method is to pull the battery from the phone, be holding volume down (or was it up?) and plug it into the computer, and it should boot to the downloading screen. Odin the CWM image, and once it's totally done, unplug it. Then, holding both volume up and down, put the battery back in and press and hold the power button. Once you see the 'SAMSUNG' logo appear, you can release the keys, and it should take you to CWM. From there, you can flash a compatible kernel.
Just a heads up, any 'MTD' based ROM/kernel (MIUI, Cynanogen, AOSP) isn't compatible with stock roms/kernels. When you flash an MTD rom/kernel, it'll completely change the filesystems & layouts on your phone (making Vodoo lagfix redundant), and you can only get back by Odin w/ a few special images along with the Atlas .pit file.
I'm just looking to put him on a decent rom.
Could I just flash the PBJ kernel found here

and after that, what is a good rom? not looking to go MTD route.

Just went to the ED05 powerwashed version and its working well. Not a whole lot different than stock but at least its debloated and rooted. I had too many battery pulls when using evil fascination and Com rom (all versions). I'm still on the factory kernel because more people seem to be having issues with the PBJ kernal.

I didn't take the route initially because immediately after the kernal was linked in the powerwashed thread, there were like 4 posts of people getting Force Closes so I decided to wait a bit and see how it pans out (patience is a virtue). I've already downloaded the kernel, i'm just waiting. One thing i'm missing from the PW rom is getting rid of the battery popup. I'm scared to flash the mod because I beleive it was made for EB01.
PS i'm on PW v2

I agree with ZankTank. This is a great ROM and I am also still on the stock kernel that was posted. My phone has never felt as smooth as with this ROM/kernel combination. Just installed the V2 version last night and it is working great and no missed calls.

the otb-fusion kernal and the pbj kernal both work great on powerwash! 90% of peoples problems are user error.
One of the reasons I moved away from stock or stock-ish roms was the battery popup that came with Froyo. Well I've just flashed the zip to remove this "originally intended for EB01 as I mentioned above and there's no popup and I haven't had any FC's or issues as of yet. Granted i've only been using it an hour. I'll update after more use.

May I ask why does the battery popup bother you so much?

Bionix 1.3.1 to ICS

Can someone please explain to me how to go from Bionix 1.3.1 to ICS? I have read a lot (perhaps too much) about GB bootloaders, etc. but am not sure what is required.
Do I need to have a GB ROM installed before going to ICS?
I have also seen guides for going from 2.1 to ICS, but that is not my situation.
I guess my main area of ignorance is that I have never flashed any bootloader of any kind.
If I go to ICS and want to restore my Froyo backup do I need to flash a bootloader before I do that?
Obviously I'm confused about the whole process.
Thanks for any clarification you can give me.
See my guide to go from 2.1 to ICS and one if the top lines tells you how to go from Froyo to ICS.
GB bootloaders are no longer needed but suggested. Probably the only scary part of the whole process, but it is actually the easiest.
CM7 needed before ICS or not?
From a post in the same thread as your guide:
"
If you want a stable 2.2 try Toxic8 (I run this with Gingerbread theme as my "home" ROM when I am not testing), Deranged9, Bionix (no longer supported) and Bionix Fishman's version (this is supported), Bi-winning. All you have to do to flash these is follow the instructions above and when it comes time to flashCM7, skip it and flash the ROM of your choice."
Does this mean that if I have Bionix already that I don't need to go to CM7 before ICS?
There are a couple of ICS Roms where you can come from froyo. You have to probably flash it twice to get into the specific cwm.
To get back to you bionix, you have to use Odin to get back to stock.

This is from a different thread in a different context. Someone was asking how to flash a custom ROM, IIRC.
If you want ICS, you have to flash CM7 first, let it bootloop, pull the battery, reflash and then once it settles, flash ICS.
Also, don't apologize for being detailed or thinking that you are reading into too much, Wished more were like this.
From the Guide
This is for a clean install. You can also install straight from Froyo. Just start at the CM7 part below and skip the Odin portion.

so any luck with getting to ICS from bionix 1.3.1...cause im still in the same spot...and im very wary as to what to do as well...so if any luck...please let me what you did...
I just did it
If you follow the instructions in the Passion ICS thread it's pretty straightforward. I had never used Odin before even though I had flashed Bionix almost a year ago. I'm not a phone guru, just somebody who likes to mess with these custom ROMs.
These steps are high level, you can find specific links in numerous places.
Here's what I did:
- Download Odin
- Download the required files to flash the phone back to stock 2.1 (.pit file and .tar file)
- Backup apps with Titanium (don't bother backing up the system it's different in newer versions anyway and all you'll have is trouble if you try to restore system settings)
- Backup anything else you feel is important on your internal and external SD cards
- Use Odin to flash the phone back to stock
- Root the phone (using the update.zip technique)
- Install clockwork recovery (I found an update.zip for this too)
- Flash the Cyanogenmod version of ICS (no longer under development but you need it for the boot loaders). You will likely encounter a boot loop in this process. Don't panic, just pull the battery once it loops a few times. Boot back into recovery and flash again.
- From this point you can now flash ICS using clockwork, following this you can restore your apps with Titanium if desired
ICS totally rocks by the way. I've been using Passion v13 RC1 for a week now. Tried the newest one Euphoria but it didn't work out for me.
I have to admit that I never tried ICS. I have been using an ICS theme for a long time so my phone looks like it has ICS on it. I was also leary of the mute/unmute problem I had read about and wasn't sure about how well good GPS was.
I've been testing out the ICS that is to become CM9 with the latest build being 16 found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1503038
It's really stable... granted not everything is implemented such as a number of the settings screens. But I was on CM7 when I installed it so I was able to just flash it direct.

This method works great! I used this last week and had some trouble with boot loops. But nothing that can't be fix with removing the battery. I suggest finding the youtube video that is on the ICS Passion thread. The person does it on real time, so you can follow along as you do it.
I love ICS passion. It is as smooth or even smoother than Bionix.

-From the main menu of recovery, perform a wipedata/factory reset again
-Reboot
-On bootup, give it a few minutes to settle in, reboot and use as normal.
-Enjoy your ICZen!

No need to have GB boots and if you want to go back, odin to stock to reflash Bionix and then your nandroid.
This is a great ICS rom and I'm a huge Bionix fan, with a 1.3.1 and 1.3.1 Fishman final nandroid backup.
I flashed Passion ICS rc13 on 2 Vibrants, one from Bionix 1.3.1 and another from trigger 2.2 and skipped some steps (like GB bootloader) and they are working just fine.
My steps:
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. Flash CM GB.
3. Wipe data/factory reset
4. Flash Neobuddy ICS
5. Flash kernel.
6. Let the phone boot, sign up and do its setup.
All in all, took maybe 30 minutes first phone and 20 min second phone once I got more comfortable.
bionix 1.31 striaight to CM7 then on to ICS?
Do you have to go back to stock? Why couldn't you just flash to CM7 then go on to ICS? I am on Bionix 1.31 and this process just seems easier.

I have to admit that I never tried ICS. I have been using an ICS theme for a long time so my phone looks like it has ICS on it. I was also leary of the mute/unmute problem I had read about and wasn't sure about how well good GPS was.

I think mute/unmute is hit or miss. But if you are worried about or need GPS, dont flash an ICS rom.
Also, when upgrading fro 2.2 -> 4.0, take out your external sd card prior to that! It might cause a bootloop when flashing the initial CM7 rom. I happened to me and also other people on youtube (where I found out, was the source of the problem)

Yep you can, just make sure you make a back up and clear all data

It's mainly to get rid of any ghosts left from other roms to avoid any bugs not caused from the rom you install and avoid giving a rom a bad review without giving it a clean canvas to start with.
