Im pretty new to pocket pcs, with my Wing being the first. When i load my phone up i usually have 15.xx mb available (is this good?) and thats with fring (chat client) automatically starting up, but i usually close it. I use my slide to unlock program by when i turn off my screen (tap power button) and when i hit any key the slide to unlock automatically comes up. After just using this once, my available memory drops down to 9mb. Is this normal or should i get new slide to unlock/ get rid of it.
How much memory should i try to keep available for program memory and what can i do to free up more program memory.
thanks a lot,
bline
edit: i thought this sounded interesting but i need help with it so anyone that does it can u help me?
4) Move/Remove StartUp links:
...a) Using Resco File Explorer ...
...b) make directory "\Windows\StartUpDisabled"
...c) if you don't use MyFav5 Plan
......copy "\Windows\StartUp\My5MsgCenter.lnk" to "\Windows\StartUpDisabled\My5MsgCenter.lnk"
...d) if you don't use Voice Commands often (you can still manually start app)
......copy "\Windows\StartUp\Voice Command.lnk" to "\Windows\StartUpDisabled\Voice Command.lnk"
5) Backup & Remove Services
...a) using Resco Registry editor ...
...b) goto "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services"
...c) if you don't use MyFav5 Plan (SMSCSend links to my5client.dll, I don't have My Fav 5 plan, so I don't need this service)
......1) click and hold "SMSCSend"
......2) choose 'export' from popup menu
......3) save SMSCSend reg export somewhere for backup
......4) delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\SMSCSend" from registry
...d) goto "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services"
...e) if you don't use Windows Live (don't know for sure, but I think this service is what slowly drains available memory, finally forcing a daily reboot. don't have to 'daily reboot' after disabling this service)
......1) click and hold "Windows Live"
......2) choose 'export' from popup menu
......3) save Windows Live reg export somewhere for backup
......4) delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\Windows Live" from registry
...f) goto "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init"
...g) if you don't use the little 'quick launch' Tray App icons on the bottom of the Today Screen
......1) click and hold "Launch92"
......2) choose 'export' from popup menu
......3) save Launch92 reg export somewhere for backup
......4) delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init\Launch92" from registry
6) Soft reset & you are done ... a quick, and responsive Wing with much better memory usage.
...a) try this basic setup for a day to see what it is like without adding your favorite Today Screen plugins. Then add something in and compare memory usage. A lot of apps available now seem to need a updated version to be optimal with WM6.
...b) I installed ...
......1) SPB Mobile Shell 1.5 /w today screen plugin
......2) SPB Insight /w today screen plugin and 20+ feed sources
......3) pTravelAlarm
......4) Some non-memory resident programs and games
...c) getting 21 MB free on boot
...d) after all day phone, camera, email, insight, and IE browser useage, memory hovers around 14-18MB free
I thought I'd start a thread for anyone else out there like me who thinks that rhov23's Itask application is fantastic but has yet to figure out all of his/her device's configuration. If we all collaberate, we can probably limit the repetetive questions rhov23 gets so that he can continue to focus on advancing Itask even further.
Anyway, I'll keep this updated with the latest answers and fixes. Post your own configuration questions and hopefully someone else has already found the answer and can help you out. It is also worth noting that it is usually necessary to restart iTask after making changes or modifications. Below is my modified input.txt file and descriptions of the changes I've made thus far. There is still a ton of work left to do:

For example, &appsexec4=\windows\wmplayer.exe&END refers to my windows media player. If you either look through the folders of your device from your computer or look through your file explorer on your device you can find the path to just about every program and link it correctly to the proper button. So, you insert the proper path aft this part, &appsexec4=

You need to copy the input.txt file from the iTask folder on your phone and paste that copy somewhere on your computer to begin modifying.
Don't know why??
Don't know why, but this would not work for me:
\\These are the execute-buttons in the following order from top left. Lnk and exe files accepted.
&settingsexec1=\itask\Memory.lnk&END
&settingsexec2=\itask\Backlight.lnk&END
&settingsexec3=\itask\Connections.lnk&END

&settingsexec8=\itask\Clock.lnk&END
&settingsexec9=\itask\Buttons.lnk&END

But this does:

The first set starting with \itask work for me. The only one that doesn't is the link to backlight setting. The ones that work for you from the \windows\start%20menu don't work at all. Thanks for your input though.

Some Help
This is a great application, which once you get used to is straight forward, if a little time consuming to set up. Half the fun for me is working out things that I don't really understand. I have the original input text file open alongside the one that I'm configuring. You just have to find the section in the input text relating to the icon your trying to link, and after the = add the path for the application you want that icon to open. The path can be found in Explorer (or better still Resco Explorer) on your device. Most applications are found in Windows, Start Menu, Programs. This is what you type into the input text file in itask, remembering a space has to be replaced by %20 and that the text has to be exactly the same as on your device.
So, if you want to assign a program (say File Explorer) on your device to the first icon on the Apps page of itask (ie when you launch itask, click the 3rd icon along which says Apps, the first button is in the top left of the new screen and has a smiley face on it) alter the text in the input.txt file of itask after &appstext1="\Windows\Start%20Menu\Programs\File%20Explorer.Ink&END" Don't use the " " I've included them to show what you should type. When you close input.txt and restart itask, the smiley face button in Apps will open File Explorer. And so on until you've linked an icon to each program you want to open.

The "another top" program you see is nothing but a screenshot, you can replace it by changing *loadpic*.jpg to any other picture you want, or if you want your application to open immediately, change your *loadtime configuration in input.txt to 0.
I just flashed my phone with NFSFAN's Custom rom there are no predefine programs under the program list. I want to add GPS toggle and Igo8 icon that's installed on my storage card for easier access but I can't browse to it. Seems I can only add what's installed under Windows/Programs
To the best of my knowledge your problem is a generic one that has nothing to do with NFSFAN's ROM.
Everytime you flash a new ROM, generic or custom it wipes clean your windows start menu ( to "factory" state)
The programs installed on your SD card are still there, your just missing the shortcuts.
1. Use a file explorer of your choice and navigate to storage card/program files and all your installed programs should be there inside folders. The rest applies to the generic File explorer that comes with windows but any other program should be similiar.
2. go into a program folder, find the exe for the program (it's usually the one with the icon for the program). right click it with your stylus and select copy.
3. Next select menu (lower right soft key), under edit select "Paste shortcut"
4. Right click the shortcut, select either "cut" or "copy" (hint: using copy and leaving the shortcut allows you to skip the previous steps next time you flash a new ROM!!)
5. Navigate (using the up key) to Windows/start menu/program files and paste the shortcut there, for games there is a further directory. Also you can now rename the shortcut if you want.
6. Now open up the "all programs" soft key on the program tab of M2d, or select add and the program from you SD card should now be on the list.
For IGo8, I use TomTom. TT installs automatically when you insert the SD card into the ppc. After flashing a new ROM I just take my SD card out and then reinstall it. I am not sure if IGo8 works the same way or not but if the above steps prove frustrating for that, give it a shot.
It's a pain to go through this everytime you flash. It would be great if there was a tool to scan your SD card for programs and automaticaly install the proper shortcuts. There is none to the best of my knowledge. Then again, no one ever gets rewarded for being lazy.
Have fun, and if your new to this (especially flashing new ROMS), read...read...and read.
Best of luck
Wow, that's some detailed info. Thanks
I haven't tried your method yet, but I just remember that GPS toggle is actually a today plugin, NSFANS takes up the entire today screen, therefore it isn't visible.
I usually toggle my gps on before starting Igo and I get instant Sat lock.
As far as Igo8 Vs TT, I have both but I like the interface of Igo better. I don't have to reinstall anything after I flash. I just go to the Igo8 folder in my Storage card and execute the program. It runs off the storage card, there's nothing to install.
Cool, I've been meaning to try IGo myself sometime.
Not being able to use normal today plugins is a turn off for some. Only having one calendar line is another (M3d has a calendar tab). It's not NFSFANS's fault, that's Touch-flo 2d (Manila 2d). It is more a plugin itself than a whole new UI, it started on the diamond, was released on the Opal and Jade (Touch 3g) phones and ported to our devices by the devs here at XDA.
I love it personaly, it offers most users everything they need without going too deep into the actual winmo interface.....which is not to "touch" friendly.
I think a workable solution might be to see if you can put a shortcut to GPS toggle on the programs tab.
In the developement and Hacking section several devs were working on an m2d/today toggle that lets you toggle back and forth. There is also another app that tries to use the soft keys. Of course if you like M2d but need more than one prog tab, search "m2d operator tab" on this site. It is fully customizable and allows you to basically have 2 program tabs.
M2d operator tab:

If M2d proves to be not for you, I suggest using the old today screen with schens HTTC customizer in place. It's worth it's weight in gold as well. I was using it untill M2d came out.
Cheers,
well assuming you're using his newest one all you have to do is go to the program you want in the file explorer, tap and hold it, and then just tap "send shortcut to programs".
ehh, I just flashed my phone with Dette 2D v2.3 today. I'll mess with it for a few days and try something else until I find the one that feels good to me.

Don't you need to use astrogps launcher with iGO? I'm using NFS 1.25 and I need some sort of priming software for iGO and Tomtom, is there something else you are using?
I only use google maps (on my M2D search tab), and TomTom while driving.
I use no other program to prime at all.
I travel coast to coast with my job, I just use the search tab, or launch TomTom (never in the same order, sometimes only one or the other), and presto.....a fix within 10 seconds.
As I said in another thread, I was showing off my phone to my FO one day and let google maps run while we were departing Montreal. It showed us going down runway 28, turning eastbound and crossing the St. Lawrence. The only reason it quite was we were going to fast for google maps to update through the data connection. Later in cruise (at 23,000 ft) I launched TomTom, it was confused as heck (didn't know what road we were on!!!!), but it did show our proper Lat/Long (I confirmed it with the aircraft's FMS).
Been running smooth for a while, never a problem getting sats or a quick fix.
That was a helpful explanation for me too. I'm a noob and using your steps I now have Skyfire in my Start Menu. Many thanks !!!
Hi guys,
is it possible to change the default Browser (T-Mobile web'n'walk [Opera9]) to self-installed Opera10?
Could not find any possibility...
thanks!
No ideas? Damn T-Mob branding. No ROM Update available
I don't have Opera 10 installed, so can't give you exact instructions, but there's an executable in the windows folder called OperaL. This is what manilla runs when you open internet explorer from the internet tab.
You need to replace that with the executable for opera 10. It's also possible that there are associated files and/or folders with Opera 10. They may or may not need to be copied into the windows folder too. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I don't have Opera 10 as I prefer to keep the ability to pinch-to-zoom.
Incidentally, this has nothing to do with T-Mobile's branding. An off-the-shelf SIM free HD2 (like mine) uses Opera 9 from the internet tab too. It just isn't branded as T-Mobiles.
Thanks for your answer.
If this would be a "normal" Opera 9, it would be OK and no Problem. But every time I'll start the Browser by clicking the icon in the internet tab, the "web and walk"-Opera-Browser asks me "Would you really go online?" and I have to tap "yes". This is really ugly and so I want to replace it by another browser - in this case opera 10.

I understand - that would get on my tats as well! If you prefer Opera 10, try the above. If you'd like to keep Opera 9, I could supply you with the exe off my phone and it may get rid of the message. Don't know for sure though.

Check "HKLM\Software\Opera\Defaults\ConnectConfirmationMsg" and set it to 0
also check "HKLM\Software\Opera\Defaults\FirstTimeConnectConfirmationMsg" and set that to 0.
Good luck!
Thanks for this registry hack, but both of them are set to 0 by default. very ugly.
@johncmolyneux thanks, but my colleague has a hd2, too, but unbranded. he will send me his operal.exe and then we'll test if it's running.
It's pretty easy to bypass the MessageBox. The Opera (or Web'n Walk) Shortcut in the startmenu points not to \windows\OperaL.exe but \windows\BrandedBrowser.exe... so simply edit the shortcut located in \windows\startmenü\programme with totalcommander or something.
As Far as the Internet Tab in Manila goes... i don't have a clue. i searched the registry, searched several xml files in \windows....
YES, DID IT!
Thank you, operative1.
I've searched the registry for "BrandedBrowser" and:
HKLM\Software\HTC\Manila\UseBrandedBrowser set from 1 to 0 and look - Opera10 is opening. Now i just have to change the Icon - but at the moment i'm really happy that the Shortcut is right!
Thank you all guys!
Great. Looking long time for it.
Thanks a lot.
idephili
THANK YOU! It fit's!
No hack/edit needed!
If you open Opera 9 and go to Menu/Settings/Advanced and uncheck Set Opera as default browser then exit. When you install Opera 10 it asks at that time if you'd like to set it as your default browser select yes and your done. No registry hacks or anything else needed.
My Start Menu is really crowded. The Custom ROM I had on my TP2 had the icons sorted into folders -- which I really liked -- so I'm trying to do that on my HD2.
Doing that through File Explorer seems tedious, however, whenever I navigate to the Start Menu folder on my PC with the phone hooked up via USB, I can't move icons into folders, I'm told I don't have the permissions.
Any fix?
Also, is there any way to get the Start Menu (and it's folders) to sort themselves like Windows Explorer typically sorts files -- folders first, files second, and after that alphabetically?
I'm using Windows Mobile 6.5.5 if it makes any difference.
Would appreciate help.
I'm not aware of any editor for the start menu I'm afraid, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.
I've tidied mine before now, but just using the method you suggested and using totaly commander. At least I could multi-select links, rather than move them 1-by-1.
Sorry mate.
Maybe i'm missing something, but I can't replicate the problem? I have just tested this, and I can quite happily browse to the windows/start menu/programs folder of my mobile from my pc, (it takes quite a while to open the windows folder, maybe 2 minutes) , then create folders and move links around without a problem. Is that what you are trying to do?
<Edit>Using windows 7 ultra, and i have the allow all programs tweak from bsb tweaks, doesn't that set the permissions in teh registry to something less controlling?
I´m looking for a tool that not only sorts the icons but also changes the registry settings for the links. That means that if you uninstall the program the start menu icon is also removed and so on...
