[Q] Battery drains more in 2.1?! - XPERIA X10 General

After updating my X10 to generic global 2.1 (x10i version [I'm on x10a]) my battery drains crazy fast. Before I used to get a solid 7 hours of continuous music playback, 4 emails checking for new emails every 10 min, couple youtube videos and some other stuff and I would still have 40% battery after the 7 hours.
But after I updated to 2.1 after 1 hour of just fixing the settings the way I like them (No emails, videos, music, anything really just settings for ADW launcher) my battery went from 97% to 60%. Anyone know why it does this?
Even with my phone on standby and all the 3rd party apps closed via task killer I still lose 3-5% every 30 min which is way more than before.
TL;DR:
Phone battery drains 50% faster on 2.1 than 1.6 (Even without having anything put ADW launcher running). Any solutions? (I heard SetCPU is useless on X10 because the x10 already does the on demand CPU clocking)

Are you running a live wallpaper? That may do it....

I had right after the update but after few hours and a recharge I only lost 7% in 8 hours of standby so it looks like it settles down eventually.

I flashed nordic 2.1 first before 2.1 global came out. I had no issue with battery life. When global 2.1 came out, I flashed it and my battery drained like crazy. This has happened for a week before I decided to go back to nordic. Needless to say, my battery life has been much better with nordic 2.1.

I flashed to the Nordic 2.1 and battery life seemed normal. Then I applied the optimizer and it seems to have greatly improved my battery life. I'd recommend flashing to Nordic at least and using the optimization ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829660 ) if that isn't satisfactory.
Edit to add: Get rid of the task killer app. It's doing more harm than good in 2.1.

I agree...im also using nordic 2.1 and my battery is awesome....even when I use live wallpaper I easily get a full day and then some.

My battery lifetime is alot better now than in 1.6.

Took a few days, but my battery life is now back to the awesome 1.6 levels it was at before, except better. I made a Skype call, used the web for a bit and after 5 hours, still at 94%.

sometimes I see the battery draining way too fast when charging o.0 is just weird
is more like matter of luck

I had the same problem, I guess some X10a phones can't handle the X10i firmware, just install X10a generic or Rogers branded.

Hmm Thanks. I'll try flashing to Rogers 2.1 FW if that doesn't work I'll try some of your other suggestions such as Nordic 2.1 and optimizer.

Actually my battery is 10 times better since the update. I left my WiFi and BT on and after 1.5 days I was still at 75%!

Yeah, my battery use seems far better under 2.1 than it was in 1.6 (and the R2BA026 ROM was already boatloads better than the earlier 1.6 ROMs). I've left GPS and WiFi on all weekend, and my battery still has far more charge when I plug it in before bed than it ever did before (and I think my usage of the phone has actually been higher these past few days).

[Q] JI6 OTA Poor Battery Perfomance

I have read these forums for a long time but this is my first post. I recently updated the JI6 via the official T-Mobile over the air method. I have been on JI6 for two days now and have noticed that my battery life is terrible. Usually I am able to make it through a day of average use without any problems and I charge at night. Yesterday my phone did not make it through the day and it was a low use day at that. When I got home from work I started charging the phone, before bed I unplugged it and figured it would be no problem to just leave it in standby all night, my previous experience was that a night of standby only dropped my battery by a few percent. When I got up and looked at my phone before leaving for work it had already dropped to 21%, I looked at the battery usage statistics and found that Cell Standy and Phone idle had leapfrogged over display which is usually the biggest draw of power and were now using significantly more power than even the display. Also I do not live in an area of poor cell phone reception so that could not have contributed to this.
My phone was pretty much stock besides being rooted to run the WiFi tether. My wife also has the same phone and she said she is experiencing pretty much the same thing since the JI6 update.
Below is the list of the top 4 batter using processes were on my phone and their percentages.
Cell Standby 41%
Phone idle 30%
Display12%
Android System 9%
Is anyone else experiencing similar battery usage since the JI6? Is there a known problem with this JI6? Has T-Mobile or Samsung acknowledged this problem? Any suggestions for fixing the problem at least until Froyo comes out?
Perhaps others can post their experiences with battery performance post JI6 here as well so we can get a consensus.
The radio in JI6 is stronger than previous versions to help with reception. That being said, it drains battery more. However, the stats your provided seem to point to you having apps on your phone that are pulling internet information too often. My cell standy or phone idle is never higher than my display and I do use widgets and apps that update a lot.
There just seems to be a bug somewhere that causes random drain, I've seen what people are saying about and I pulled the battery, it stopped draining for me until I guess I trigger it again.

I do have some apps that are pulling data down from time to time, but I have been careful about setting these apps to not update too frequently. Also last night I specifically went in and closed any unwanted running apps, I think the only apps I left running were Seesmic, K9 Mail, and Gmail.
This thread is precisely the reason for why:
a) I finally registered to xda-developers for support
b) I decided to root my Vibrant
I received the JI6 OTA update around 5 AM on Wednesday, thinking *oh sweet this must be 2.2* I didn't hesitate to install it...the first 24 hours after didn't seem to show much signage of battery drain, but by Thursday morning things seemed...off.
6:00 AM - 100% charge, fresh off the cord
Around 11-noon - 15%, low battery notification pops up
This was by far the quickest drain I've seen, and even though I've only had my Vibrant for a month...right out of the box I was getting spectacular batt. performance with light-moderate use + wifi + sync, lowest brightness*(auto off), somewhere around 24-30 hours.
My initial reaction was to reset to factory, only to discover here that it did absolutely nothing to remove the JI6 update.
Now, post-root I've been reading through similar threads about the OTA effects and finding all types of tricks to extend the batt. life. Today the battery hasn't been as bad (with nearly everything off...sync, intervals, gps, blah blah), lasting around 11 hours. Not sure if there's any fix in sight, though I'm not really anticipating it reading how the cell standby / baseband is cranking out more power and in effect more juice.
My battery is about the same as before, getting 24-30 hours out of normal use. I'm currently 14.5 hours unplugged sitting at 42%

Flashed JI6 via Odin, and my battery life has sucked since. Talking on the phone kills it especially fast. I talked for about 45 mins yesterday morning and the battery gave out after 7 hours. Today it at least lasted 12 hours, but that was with pretty much everything turned off. Anyone flashed back to JFD? It's not like JI6 brought anything to the table.
My battery drains while idle after the update. Yet my wife's phone battery is fine. Hers is stock and mine is rooted with mobile AP flashed. I even reconditioned the battery.
Tonight I decided to flash bionix 1.91 rom to see if that would fix the battery drain issue. So far it's looking good. I'll know better tomorrow after a full charge.
JI6 installed Media Hub, right?
Sprint Epic users found that when Media Hub was installed on that platform a couple of revs back, it loaded a DRM background service that is constantly running even if Media Hub is never used. It is now pretty standard practice among knowledgeable Epic users to stop the DRM service whenever the phone boots. Many rooted users go further and delete it.
Vibrant users might try the same methods to improve battery life.
My battery usage has been fine. I installed through mini kies though rather then the ota.
Sent from my SGS Vibrant.
It totally sucks for me. I have tested it throughly this past week. Ran JDF and left it idle over night, barely lose any battery life. Update to JI6 via kies mini and lost 30% over night while i'm sleeping. I also tested the various versions of JI6 posted on xda and all of them give me horrible battery life (losing 3-5% per hour doing nothing).
I'm flashing the JDF modem file on the JI6 from kies mini. Will report back...
Again I'm completely confused here. Running stock JI6, went to sleep last night at 24%, woke up this morning at 21%

I removed mediahub via titanium and a bunch of bloatware while I was at it yesterday morning, I can report that last night before dozing off (11:45 pm) battery was at 90%, this morning (8:30 am) its at 63%...37% loss in almost 9 hours. Only wifi on throughout the night:
Display: 41% (brightness 0)
Cell standby: 27%
Phone idle: 19%
Android system: 7%

That makes no sense, if you're on WiFi it wouldn't be the cause of this. Are you sure it's set to be on WiFi 100% of the time/when the screen is off?

Switching to bionix 1.91 stock kernel solved my idle battery drain issue. I was losing ~4% an hour and now with bionix it's not draining. Unplugged the phone this morning at 100% and an hour later it was still at 100%. Same as before the JI6 update. I'm happy now. Bionix is smooth as butter.

Does anyone else see the irony or possible logic that Samsung gave us a stronger modem that uses more power and a new task manager to monitor what else is running draining power with the Ji6 update? Granted there are better task managers for root, but kinda clicks in my head.
Also after all my settings have been checked, apps, wifi sleep (used OCLF), widgets and internet, syncing frequency, wallpaper etc. I used Rom Manager to recalibrate my batteries. I thought that the battery data might have been wiped during the update and at first my phone behaved like it.
All good now. I'll never have the stand by of a flip phone, but it all seems reasonable. I use my phone a lot, a real lot. I go through 2-3 charges a day, mostly 2. I have extra batteries also. Stand buy time almost seems better, but I have not recorded data and I have made many changes.
Theres a good thread a dude put up in the Vibrant general section about his anal battery saving habits, he uncovered more ideas and things I didn't know. Hes admitedly extreme put its a good read. Also a couple of threads on how to recal the battery, some disagreement there so I did not chime in here with specs.

The Great Battery Experiment

I have two Arias, one freshly rooted with the rooted stock ROM and one running attn1's FR008 flashed straight from the freshly rooted state. The only additional app installed is BattStatt, so I can easily monitor battery state. One battery is new, with only a few cycles (over about a week) and one battery is older, purchased in August.
Over the next few nights I will be doing an experiment. Both phones will be on, same settings for GPS, WiFi, Data, and Bluetooth. They will only have the displays set on about every hour or so to check battery states. The following night, the test will be done again, with the batteries swapped. I will then run the test again with WiFi on, with intermittant connections due to my work environment.
I expect to update this thread after each night's experiment.
The first night is an exception, I'm comparing my normal ROM (loaded with apps, widgets, and running Tasker) My first night has been interesting...one running freshly rooted is still 100% after 1.5 hours. The FR008 with many apps is down to 89% (note that this is the older battery). Perhaps at the 4 hour mark, I shall swap them. It would be nice to do this with 2 new batteries, but I have what I have.
This is being done to lay rest to the claim that one ROM gives better battery life over another. Seems like it is going to be conclusive if the first night is any indication. Perhaps we'll see what app is the culprit? (Widgets??Tasker??)
Phone calls?
Interesting article regarding battery life
Interesting experiment !
Just FYI - an provocative article :
Your Battery Gauge Is Lying To You:
Everything You Need To Know About Bump Charging
And Inconsistent Battery Drain
No phone calls on either. Just to be fair, since one is without a sim card, both of them have data turned off.
At the 4 hour mark, the original rooted ROM is still at 100% and the FR008 with mucho is at 82%. I have swapped batteries.
This gave me an opportunity to race bootups. The stock ROM booted up and was usable before the FR008 (with UOT cooked startup bootup animation) even got to the dancing droid. Makes me want to undo that to see if that is slowing down the bootup.
I am eager to do this full swing with clean ROMs tomorrow. I shall make a backup of the FR008 ROM then go back to the aria_shipped_rooted_signed.zip
(found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=783508&highlight=Original+ROM). I will then flash FR008, adding only a widget for easy monitoring of battery levels, BattStatt.
This experiment is going to have to wait. Part 2 of last night's experiment indicated that my older battery drains fast in either device/ROM. The article linked in this thread is good reading. Thanks for that info.
My last Intruder was a Grumman A-6E.

You set the phone down for 8 hours and your phone drained 57% battery on idle for FR008? I find that very hard to believe because I have set my phone down over night and it drained 2% of my battery if even that. FR008 has shown the best battery life to me over the entire FR series. As of right now, my battery has been off charger for 6 hours, and Ive used the internet, wifi, and light texting with my battery at 100% still.
Edit: Im also using SetCPU...I dont know how much of a difference that would make, but there should be a difference. Try using SetCPU
FR008 is a battery drainer from hell. I just accept it.
SetCPU slows down my phone to epic proportions--no thanks.

I said I have been off the charger for 6 hours. Not necessarily using the phone for 6 hours. I browsed the web for around half an hour and sent about 30 texts since Ive been off the charger. I just dont see how its possible for your phone to drain 57% while youre not using it. What happens when you start using it?

Battery life after update to 2.3.3

Hi everyone,
I've read in the update threads that battery life has improved for most since the update.
However, I feel that my battery is draining much quicker now. I re-did all the changes I made after the update (like removing Timescape widget + disconnecting from FB, switching off auto-sync etc). Didn't make much difference, though.
So, has anyone else experienced this? Also, has someone really checked if the camera bug is gone?
Regards,
cherryfish
Yes, the camera bug is gone. Personally tested that.
As for overall battery life, there's not much difference for me. Maybe just slight improvement in idling current. (idling battery drain is still about 1% or less per hour though... almost same as before update)
But I already have really good battery life before update... so maybe that's why I don't see much difference.
Non-rooted. Unbranded. No task killers.
that's weird, my arc's battery life is way better now, lt lasts 1 day 2 hours minimum.
my gf's been complaining about the battery becoming pretty hopeless....I have repaired, factory reset and uninstalled most apps and no respite...used to give 1 n a half days easily on mod-light usuage...now barely lasts a day...
need to figure it out..ill look more into it when I have time..
I have the same problem, looked good the first day now its ****, i can loose the last 20% in an hour while its just idling, today i was down to 9% after 12 hours, but i did use the speaker to listen to music for like 5 hours. Is there Anyone else that use the speaker alot that can tell me if it uses alot of juice?
Hi, I have got similar situation with u.
I have used titanium to backup and restore the system data and apps.
Is it the problem between old ver 2.3.2 system data and new ver 2.3.3 that caused the battery drain problem?
Battery life has doubled for me. I noticed that a lot of Sonys apps are no longer running in the background after flashiing the o2 2.3.3 over my Rogers rom.
Yep, battery life is way better over here too. I did a reset on it and set the phone up again pretty manually. Did sync my contacts etc. Works very well now.
Have 4 email accounts syncing, facebook and twitter syncing every hour and every 30 mins, do quite a bit web browsing on both 3g and wlan and have had w lan constantly on for quite a few hours now. Screen brightness set on 75%.
And now, after 15 hours and 33 min I have 66% battery left.
Battery life is really great & i am loving it. Those who have problems, i doubt there must be an app (if not more) causing problem. My brother got the battery problem on his Arc (battery drain 100 to 10% in 10 hours with moderate usage).. He uninstalled Handcent & started using Go SMS Pro & battery life is again good
For me, I was on work today... Wifi always on, Facbook auto update every hour, weather every hour, 1 hour 30 minutes music listening with bluetooth headset, 50-60 sms, 5 min phone call, half hour browser, played a game in 15 min.. and after 15 hours battery is till 60%... I am very happy
Waiting for the upgrade since camera makes battery die very soon.
Without camera usage battery performance is really good.
i did not transfer any userdata when i updated so taht cant be the problem, and i have the same apps as on 2.3.2 but i do suspect widgetlocker is eating up battery. I have also read that the wather app snowstorm that i have installed is a big batterydrainer but none of those shows up in my battery usage.
I see that the music player dubletwist is the biggest sinner except the screen but im assuming thats because i used the arc speaker for music at work.
But as you can see from the pictures i have drained the battery twice today, though the second charge was only up to something like 80%. And ive hardly used it after that(3-4 minute long calls and maybe 20 minutes of music using in-ear headphones and 30 min browsing). Something is wrong somewhere

My battery life has definitely improved it now must be about the best I have had on any Android device I have owned.
My battery life has gone from an average of 15 hours to an average of 31 hours with more usage. Im very pleased with the update best smart phone battery life ive ever had now:-D

I really don't know, but after a couple of reboots it seems better now... might be the reason.
Edit: I just installed Battery Monitor Widget and it says I it drains ~200-350mA atm. Wifi and 3G all off.
For me I defintely think the battery life is worse. I only ever use my phone on non-3g, all other connections off and got a nice 2 days easy out of it.
Since the update I would say I get just over a day (not sure if that is still good in other people's eyes) One of the killers seems to be the gallery which I presume is because of the new facebook update which pulls in your facebook pictures onto the phone....
Anyone find as well when you play games the phone gets really really hot i.e shadow guardians HD makes my phone just burn.
Easily upgraded today.
So far with using camera alot batt live is fine
and droping very slow on idle. Great!
Upgraded mine on Saturday and it's defo better on the battery. Wasn't using it at work and it was hardly using any power. Then started messing about with wifi and gps, etc, and it's still got plenty.
Haven't noticed many other differences though!!

I have to charge my phone 2 days and battery is now at 54%.
I never had such battery life before even with bloatware apps removed with that usage.
Imagine if i remove them now! (Though i wont since i cant root with gingerbreak anymore, hopefully someone will implement it on the next gingerbreak's update)
Agree with everyone else here.
Battery life has improved with upgrade.

much better bud...but im on a custom rom and my battery life is even better
3d-6h-4d8h All the time.
Email check every 5 min, twitter check 1h. wifi always on. Phone calls and little other usage.
12 hours before stable normal use. Arround 10 now with 2.3.4.
My battery life got much much worse. No custom roms, everything stock, UK non branded phone. Before upgrade (from 2.3.3.) battery lasted about 12 hrs and still 20% left, after update to 2.3.4. removed from charger at 8 am in the morning and 100% charged, after 10 hrs phone at 7%, same type usage as before, actually even little less.
I am very dissapointed with the battery life after upgrade.
Well this was my first day on the new software, will see tomorrow...
The custom rom is better for you battery life.

2.3.5 is reported to be even better on battery life, have a look around and try a custom rom & kernel, you will notice a difference.

I've seen the same battery life drop on my unbranded UK phone since kies update to 2.3.4. It barely makes it through the day now. Hoping this gets resolved soon, as it seems I've taken one step forward and two steps back.

I agree, battery life is actually worse with the official 2.3.4 update. With 2.3.3 I got around 1d, 12h, now I'm getting less 6-12h than before, with some synching, push email, calls/sms and light browsing. I mostly use stock apps, except the browser (I prefer Opera). I'm not even playing games or anything. Sammy, I'm dissapoint...
At least now the interface is smoother, but overall I'm not happy with the update. Battery life is (or should be) sacred.
No complaints so far getting more juice left after longer period!
+1 for improved battery life. i didn't do any measurements. going from stock 2.3.3 to stock 2.3.4 and battery was noticeably better all day. on 2.3.3 it wasn't great, so i'm happy for any improvement.
Agreed, the idle times are insane. Before I was only able to pull a day with less than 20% battery remaining. Now I'm able to get over a day of battery now and still have 50% battery left-over. Wonder how a movie marathon would fair now, compared to before the update.
I'm on 2.3.5 and my battery is at 70% after a 12+ day. On 2.3.4 it wouldn't last anywhere near that. I was charging twice a day.

Battery life impressive on 2.3.5
I did my first full battery drain and managed to get 1d18h with quite a bit of use. Wifi on all the time. At least 2 hours of talking. I have dimmed my display but thats it.
Definitely better for me on 2.3.4 - no question about it.
Rather than compare my findings with other peoples the only fair thing to do is compare with the level of my 2.3.3 drain previous to updating. My usage is pretty like for like during the week so this makes for a fair comparison.
On 2.3.3. I could get a couple of days use out of it (a few hours of music, heavy twitter, frequent push gmail updates, camera use, calendar use, alarms etc) and be down to about 20% or so and that made it worth a recharge overnight. That was still ok for me and fair enough.
From a full charge yesterday morning and now into the afternoon on day 2 I still have 70% left. Even if I use some during what's left of the day I'm going to way better off under 2.3.4 - could probably run three days or more at this rate?
I guess it all depends how you use you phone and what parts you use most as to whether any update is better or worse. For me this is way better and I say well done to the update!
My phone is running Rom Kitchen KI4 2.3.4 ROM with CF-Root KI4 Kernal, since I took it off charge 1d 5h 19m, battery = 66%...
Android OS = 1h 19m
Display = 58m
Cell Standby = 1d 5h 19m
Phone Idle = 1d 4h 21m
Wifi On = 1d 5h 19m
Bluetooth = 1d 5h 6m
Android System = 39sec / Stay Awake = 4m 50s
XDA = 2m 42s
Facebook Synch every hour
Beautiful Widgets Synch every 4 hours
Gmail Push notifications on
MyBackyp Pro runs a schedule every day at 11:59 to backup SMS, MMS, Call Logs, Dictionary, Android Home and Settings.
Have received a few sms and emails, browsed the web with Dolphin HD and XDA forums via their app... looks good to me, on the previous 2.3.3 Stock ROM, It would be near dead by now...
On 2.3.3 (stock, NL), my battery was absolutely fine. I got between 2 and 6 days with light usage.
After upgrading to 2.3.4 it got worse. Hardly get 2 days now.
What's even worse is, that now my Android OS process takes 60%, which wasn't the case before. It seems as if 2.3.4 introduced the OS bug, instead of getting rid of it!
The only thing I changes more or less at the same time when I made the update (well, two days earlier actually), was to enable "Use wireless networks" under Location and security. But according to several forums this should not use significantly more battery.
Any ideas what is going on here?

I think I know the reason for high battery drain..

So...
I always thought that the battery drains really fast (yeah I know it's a smartphone blabla). With every rom and android version it was more or less the same.
I tried everything to get a better battery performance. Never over/underclocked, uv.
Deleting samsung apps brought a better battery life. So I installed betterbatterystats and other programs to achieve even more.
But still... not enough.
And now I disabled Auto screen rotation... and checked with os monitor...
I have android 2.3.6, speedmod kernel 18.
Battery now 1d, 7h and still 40 % left!! android os is 10 % (never had so little)
Oh and screen on 3h 40 minutes... many sms, calls, wifi and data..
try it!
I turned it off when I first got my phone because it can be quite annoying sometimes. But I can't vouch for this because prior to my sgs2 my last Android was when the G1 came out 3 + yrs ago and it used to last me for ever. But this phone's battery lasts a long time for me now so the rotation may be a huge battery drain

+1 i'm with you on this
i guess the reason is not the auto rotation.....it's the android version 2.3.6.......the 2.3.5 has a lot of draining the battery........all people who updated to the 2.3.6 said they have a lot better battery life.................
I hated the auto rotation since the Symbian days.
