When attempting to retrieve or send text messages lately I receive an error "Memory is full" or something to that effect.
I have a handful of applications, 6 pictures, no music/ movies etc.
From File Manager:
SD Card is 164M/15292M 1%
Applications 351M/6756M 5%
WTF am I doing wrong? How can I see internal memory to see if it full?
May it be you have too many text messages?
I thought of that. It only had 3 total lines.

Looking into this more it started around where 2.2 was forced on me...
Anyone know where txt messages are stored? Or how to see available memory?
I didnt want to but I see rooting this phone in the near future.
I believe I found the issue. I was syncing my corporate e-mail via the OOTB app then also using touchdown. The OOTB app was never clearing my e-mails so they were building up. I deleted the sync account but I don't believe it removed the e-mails loaded into "memory" does anyone know how to go in and remove these?

One of the main reasons I bailed for 2.1 before an OTA was released was due to the "low on space" error, even though I have hundreds of megs free app storage left from the 748mb allocation.
I use no social apps at all
No large cache files listed in application view
Mail cache is zero and no current mail (I deleted from trash all mail from Google account)
I am using Skyraider 2.52 Sense. I thought the "low on space" issue was addressed with Froyo? This frikin sucks.

This should be in general.

Sorry, I thought I was in general (too many windows open). How do I move this?
Flame away- I deserve it.
I would like to bump this because I am in the exact same situation.
Do you guys have google earth installed? I remember reading some where that this was one of the apps causing the issue because it reserves memory available. So even when you have hundreds of megs available the warning comes up. Sorry I don't have the link to the source but it was months ago now when I read that.
Try to clear the cache in google earth or uninstall the app and see if the error goes away.

This is my solution from experience. It happened to me twice, and this fixed it twice:
Delete your inbox from your text messages (handcent, etc)
Some of my conversations had like 2000 messages and after I deleted them it immediately went away.

I have no messages stored, no email cache of social apps. I am using the rooted lite version of 2.2, yet once again, I have the freakin' "low on space" warning and have 267mb free for apps.
Had the problem with non-rooted 2.1 stock, 2.52 Skyraider and now 2.2 final that has bloatware removed. Very lame.
I have seen this issue with Fennec and Skyfire. Do you have either of those installed?
Hmm, hopefully it isn't too late to post here, but I don't feel like making a new thread. I have over 500mb of free space in my phone storage of the 748mb available, and it is telling me that I'm low on space. Any ideas?

Uninstall Google Earth.
I don't have it installed.
I had this issue once.
I didn't delete any emails.
I removed my corporate exchange email account from my phone, then re added the same account, and then let it re synch all my emails once again.
I hope this helps.
Ya I don't use the HTC Mail app, just the gMail one. And grr... This is really bugging me when I have so much space left...
Same here: Zero social apps or mail cache and still have the error with 334mb free. Seems my device keeps creeping down in free space, since it used to show the error with 250mb and then 267mb.
Four roms, clean slate each time, but same result: "Low on space".

Yep, Skyfire, but it only shows 5mb in app manager and I still get the error (sorry for the late reply).
I zapped Google Earth too, but still get the error.
Zapped Skyfire too and same result.
Hi
I get the sending.... hanging problem with the galaxy s built in gmail app.
clearing the cache doesn't work, and using the other email app wont attach video , it just says too big.
what are the good alternative email programs?
Cheers
Hi,
I'm using K-9 Mail via an IMAP Account and are fairly happy with it. Only one thing: Push-Mail via IMAP-Idle drains the Battery like Hell... but a 15 Minute poll is fair enough (shorter Intervals are also available).
And it is FOSS...
Bye

cheers K9 came up in a google search, it sounds good
I turn off sync with email and check it manually when i want to.
its more about sending an email and it actually getting there . where the gmail app fails .
I check my mail on my main computer, but use my phone to 'quick check' stuff. but if an app is a 'beast that takes ages to open' that would be a pain. I didn't think about battery life, (cheers for that). so many apps just run in the background on my galaxy s. as much as i love it, it is another crazy computer in my life .
is K9 a free app or advertising/donation?
also any other suggestions welcome too
Are you sure the gmail app is failing? If you've got your phone to manually sync, the email will never send. The gmail app does not send emails as per request, they are put in a queue and sent out only when the phone syncs. Try it now. Send an email and keep syncing disabled. Nothing happens. Hi options the. Choose refresh option and I will push through the queued emails. As for file size limit, I wouldn't know but I have added a total of 5.8mb in an email which sent fine.
Edit: re read your post. Use the gmail app and try what I said, it has no issues with file size like other **** apps.

K9 is free open source software without any kind of adds or something else.

send sometimes works
sometimes doesn't (usually when i attach pic or video)
i can send very small test messages by clicking refresh

i always use refresh to send the email with sync disabled
its a know issue
the file size issue is to do with the 'other' email program that came with my phone.
I've ruled both out as not fit for purpose.
but i don't want to try hundreds of apps so i thought a few good recommendations might help.
cheers anyway, but I'm giving up on the gmail app.
quick update:
I've tried K9
it had success sending video attachments (that were stuck on gmail app or cancelled on the other galaxy s email app)
the bad
when it set up, it took ages (i have 1000s of email on my gmail account. so it could just be that)
it doesn't seem to group the emails (like replies from forums etc) can i set the settings to do this?
the names like expunge and poll (empty trash and refresh)
it seems a bit slower than the gmail app? but i could just be me
i'm trying to get used to the scrolling left and right in messages.
the good
it showed the full message
it could send video attachments to gmail (is 25mb max for gmail)
it sent the items (unlike the gmail app)
it seems pretty equipped with options
looks ok
I'm still not sure
What else might i try?
ok
I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S
I shoot 3 videos (all 3 are about 7mb)
Gmail can handle attachments up to 25MB
Gmail app always gets stuck on sending (with no warning to let you know its not sent)
MMS wont convert the files
Other Email app wont accept the file size
K9 sends them (which is a step forward)
but doesn't group messages by conversation
also it has the push always running (i don't know what push is)
and seems to always be checking my mail (I don't mind exploring the oddly named and confusing settings if its the program i am going to use)
also the built in gmail app shortens messages so replies from this forum wont display the link to the topic (pretty annoying) the other built in email app does display the link long enough to click.
I feel very frustrated.
I just wanted to send a couple of funny videos to my friend via any means.
And it feels like my Samsung Galaxy S is just completely against me doing this in any easy fashion
I might keep K9 but turn all the setting to check the email off and use it if i want to send a file.
how do i turn the check mail settings off on k9 (the options are confusing, confusingly named, and different depending on where you are in the program.
if i turn K9 off, and use it only occasionally will it take ages to open if i keep all my messages on the server?
Or is there a fourth email program:
that opens fast
groups the messages
sends attachments up to 25mb
Cheers
i tried Maildroid but he adds were annoying.
back to K9:
How do i stop K9 automatically checking mail?
and how do stop the k9 mail service app running constantly (i assume its the push thing)
I'm thinking of keeping the app on there to send files by email, and for links that don't show up properly like replies from this forum. but i don't want it spanking my battery or checking for emails
How do i set it up for "there when i need it"?
the options are confusing and have nonsense kind of names.
Cheers
It doesn't seem to cause any issues other than the annoying message on occasion. I froze the TMO app pack, facebook, twitter, yahoo mail and messenger and a few other things.
The problem seems to occur most often when I go into Handcent or Messages to check or send SMS. I read some other threads on this that said that clearing out the data from Calendar Storage and Gmail Storage fixed the issue, but it didn't fix it for me. I'm assuming my SMS database might be corrupt or have the wrong permissions, but I can't find a way to delete it completely. Going into manage applications and clearing the data for Handcent and Messages does NOT clear out my existing SMS messages. I deleted them all through the app, but I don't think that actually wipes out the database file and creates a new one.
I have a strong suspicion that it's related to SMS/MMS messages. I fired up aLogCat also and set a filter for "bgp," but nothing shows up when it crashes. It's logging in verbose mode also.
Anyone else have this issue?
By the way, since I rooted and froze all of those apps, my battery life has nearly doubled. I know all of that stuff is supposed to go inactive if not used, but clearly some of those apps are waking up and doing things even though they were not being used. I should also note that if you freeze the Messages app, then MMS in Handcent will not work. It seems to rely upon the built in Messages app, I had to Defrost it to get MMS working again.
try un-freezing the weather apps if you did those. i killed them from mine and started getting this too.. unfortunately i need don't have a way to get them back. i'm waiting for someone to post a backup of the original stock rom 2.2.1 so i can restore it.
In the last 2 days my Yahoo email app has used nearly 2GB of Background Data. T Mobile blamed me for sending large files but I know I haven't done this. Previous month was something like 78mb. Anyone else experienced this? Is it a glitch? Don't know how to stop it apart from disabling Background Data, but is this the only way?
Maybe you should check your sync settings for the Yahoo mail app.
I personally dont use the app, so i dont know how it behaves.
My only suggestion is check the sync settings.
does the Yahoo email app automatically download images from each email? Are there any ads embedded in the app itself or in each email that are received?

Thanks, I'm not aware thats downloading images - it wasn't before, the data use has happened within 2-3 days. I'll look at that though. I turned Sync off but seems a bit pointless to have it and not sync!
So over the past couple days my phone became ridiculously painful to use. Opening text message conversations would require almost a minute or more to load, browsing the internet was jarring, and just everything would hang and cause me to wait before I could use it. This wasn't the experience I was used to and it just started all of a sudden.
I checked to see if maybe I downloaded some app that would cause the issues, but I hadn't downloaded anything recently except for regular updates. Then I checked to see if any app I wasn't used to seeing was running in the background. No dice (although I did notice the sync icon frequently in my status bar, something that didn't click at the time). Thus I began assuming it was the ROM I was running. I figured I should wipe /data and /system and flash a new ROM. However, I decided to check my storage space and looked through my apps. This is where it got weird:
Contacts Storage was taking up 2.2 gigs of storage...
At the time, I didn't consider that to be a potential cause of my issues, but rather a ridiculous bug that I fell victim to. So I deleted the data freeing up a bunch of storage space and decided to turn off Facebook contact sync (guessing that may have contributed to it). Now Contacts Storage takes up 20.54mb, a much more reasonable amount of space.
Since deleting all of that data, my phone has been back to normal performance. Opening up text messages is near instant, scrolling in the browser doesn't get stuck, etc, etc, etc. I can understand why deleting that data would help the messages, but I'm not sure why it would affect the performance of the entire phone. Wondering if it was constantly syncing stuff in the background hurting the performance throughout the phone.
Has anyone else encountered this or know why it would cause any of the issues I described? Granted, I just did this a couple hours ago so things might change, but everything seems good for now.
It's just probably CPU processes taking up the speed you need for whatever you're doing. FB sync is notorious for this, that's why I use Picture Contact Sync and manually sync my contacts. FB app should just be hung and shot and whoever at FB who made it fired.

Yeah I have HaxSync for syncing contact pictures now which is all I need. What the hell was Facebook syncing though to take up 2gigs? I tried looking into this online and I found a few people reporting sizes of 300mb, but nothing over a gig. I have no idea how mine got so high.
delete Facebook and never use it again.. the mobile web version is better
