[Q] Few questions about desire HD before purchase - Desire HD General

well i currently have a desire SLCD version and i really love it, however yest i got a pretty awesome offer which will allow me to jump to Desire HD free of charge
i tried the device myself for few minutes, i found it beautiful but having read some reviews i have some concerns
few reviews mentioned unlike the classic desire the Desire HD have problems playing back 720p videos even mp4 ones, this essential for me since i have my portfolio already encoded in 720p mp4 and runs perfect on my desire and don't want any stutter when i present it (Ad agency people will jump n say get an iphone you loser)
did anyone test the SD card speed with the desire HD? the classic froyo desire had a software issue with the SD card read ahead speed which was solved by patching the kernel, is this related to the video playback issue on the desire HD?
my second issue, reviews mentioned heavy digital processing in the camera produced photos, the desire had the same issue but i used to simply lower sharpness to -2 and the digital processing gets turned off (noise blur and then oversharpness) hence i was able to get beautiful almost analog like photos using the standard HTC camera app, do we have a similar negative sharpness setting in the desire HD camera and does it disable the image processing?
thanks for all the help

.mp4 files play very well even in 720p. It's the bitrate that might give you some trouble, but any reasonable setting (it's 4.3" after all) plays very smooth. Add the DLNA clent and you get an awesome player.

Touch HD playing videos

How do you think HD will be playing HD videos? Remember the great deception that the Kaiser was.. and I still I'm not over it..
But If it is like my Diamond, will be superb!
However, the screen is bigger, and will require more from the hardware.
Here is a link for a video and in the last minute (8:40) where he runs CorePlayer and watches House.S05E01 - (will it be HDTV.XviD ??)
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/yt-OT4wr_E5ZkQ/htc_touch_hd/R/efp_video
If someone could translate that part would be great.
Thanks
bigger screen does not need better hardware , its just bigger pixels that need better battery capacity

Its not only bigger screen... its also bigger resolution (By 25%)...
If its another type of screen, it could even have better performance at less ennergy consumption
Great video tough i can't undestand that language either.

I don't understand what you mean.
the maximum of vids you can play (or lets say that the screen will show you) is ofcourse its own resolution. So you will not see real HD videos as this screen has not got a real HD resolution. But its own resolution is no problem for the CPU. Playing a movie with a bigger size, will just downscale the video to the resoultion of the HD but as there is more data to process, it may slow the CPU more down, depending of how big the movie is. but you would not want to play a 1080p video on this anyway as it would just use up huge amount of storage space, but doesn't look better. You will get the best and sharpest images if you convert your movies to the exact resolution of the screen.
Oh I understood your point, cause you probably use PocketDivXEncoder..
I was just comparing with HTC Kaiser.. On videos as well as other stuff, it sucked.
This is an important question.
That linked video showing house didn't look very smooth, i was hoping for better playback quality than that. Was it the HD, coreplayer orthe video conversion that made it stutter a little?
Does any one know of any other exmples of the HD video playback? HTC say that its makes it closer to watching the cinema on a mobile, is this statement going to be true?

i cant imagine that the HD as any problem with videos. It often just highly depends on the play. Windows media play is crap in playing videos most of the time. But even my old Compaq Ipaq could play videos very smooth.
Some players are faster then others.
language is czech
I thought it was Czech!!
But can you translate that part?
I think that it isn't very fluid the streaming..
Sometimes we notice some delays.. On my Diamond I can see it too..

to answer the original question, no it will not be able to play HD videos.
HD by definition is at least 720p, that's 720p or 1080p by today's market distribution, may be later on, there will be some weird resolution at 960p or something like that. but right now HD video are only available in 720p or 1080p
1. the video chip is not powerful enough to decode HD content,
2. windows mobile 6 doesn't support HD content
3. Touch HD only has screen resolution of 800x640, again far from HD
4. CPU isn't power enough to decode HD content (even a full desktop/laptop 500 MHz cpu isn't enough to decode, let alone a stripped down mobile cpu.)
im sure that this "HD" will have some serious problems on playing good resolution videos ...
man , qualcomm's 528 Mhz is the CPU of htc diamond, and they let that beast to have this heart on his chest ! its not fair
I might complain that the HD does not have a flash, or little base memory - but not being able to play HD video - come on guys, dream on

Look at 7 min, he shows a youtube movie wvga quality. It doesn't play very smooth either. Let's hope its because of a bad connection or something.
And lets not forget that the units floating around as preview units did carry unfinished ROM and early-stage drivers

it will play videos of its own resolution ofcourse, what are you thinking? i don't understand this topic. it has a 480*800 screen and will ofcourse be able to play videos at that size with no problem. and as i said before, even my 6 years old pocket pc could do so. and it woulkd make no sense if you would try to play a video with a higher resolution. as the screen will still only be able to show you 480*800 pixels. ofcourse, if you are talking about play real HD videos, than ofcourse i can tell you it may have probleems doing so. but it makes no sence even trying to do so.
So, take every video you have got and convert it to 480*800 and thats it.
ps: about the youtube video beeing a little choppy:
ofcourse it is, its a youtube video... and on that, it is beeing streamed!! from the net and for that, it runs very well. that has nothing to do with the cpu. its only streaming.

i am thinking of the OP's original question "can HD play HD videos" of course i understand the resolution of this phone and the video it will play.
so i dont know what you are thinking posting without reading the entire thread.
my post, which you quoted was wishing for playing good video at a decent frame rate. sure you can play videos on your 6 year old ppc, but try play, say a jet li movie on there, all his actions are a blur because the framerate isn't fast enough to capture all his kungfu actions. dido for sports videos. you understand now?
and if you are confused regarding why the OP want to watch and HD video on a non HD display, well i can tell you it is possible to put a video with higher resolution on a device which lower resolution display. it will just be upto that CPU to decode and shrink the video. suuurree, it doens't make sense, but it's do-able.. uptill a certain point (resolution), above which it will be too heavy and too much work for the CPU. and if you want to ask why, well i'm guessing 1. the OP was mislead by the phone's name Touch HD, 2. he may not have the time or software or doesn't want to reprocess the movies to 800x480.
and if you are still confused after reading all that.. well... ummm... LOL

technically i disagree, but from a practical standpoint, sure, i'll go with that. those net videos doesn't require much processing power to decode, very little load on cpu.

Traditionally speaking, all HTC devices have very poor video playback .
Till the latest batch of VGA Devices (Diamond and Touch Pro) which i have no access to and hence cannot comment upon, all previous VGA devices had problem playing back video ENCODED AT THERE NATIVE RESOLUTION. (for reference, have a look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=324371&highlight=video)
the best i could manage was a 532x300 xvid with a bitrate of 800-1200.
so it will be a very pleasant surprise if the HD can playback video encoded at 640x480 leave alone 800x480.
On a side note, since HD will be pretty similar to the Diamond / Touch Pro , you could probably ask your friends to run a benchmark with different resolutions and bitrates.

DHD Video recording sound quality?

Hey guys,what's up?
I am waiting for my DHD and won't stand waiting till I receive it to see for myself!
Now I have a Desire and, although it has a good enough camera, sound in videos recorded by the phone is just TERRIBLE.Is sound recording better with the DHD or is it the same crappy 8KHz amr sound?I would expect much better from such a phone!
Thanks!

i'm waiting for my DHD too, but as i heard SOUND where HTC fail.
That's what I heard too and that's why I want to know!
It is a bit better.
But still not as good as the x10
What they really need to do is to change the format into .mp4 instead of .3gp, because I think that it's the .3gp that is to blame here.
The Galaxy S had an update not too long ago where they enabled videorecording to .mp4 too, so I see no reason why HTC should not do this aswell.
I was really hoping the Desire Hd would have better video recording than the original Desire probably because they called it Desire 'HD' but it would appear not. Looking at the examples on youtube I think the samsung Galaxy S is the best option. The sound is so much clearer. Is there not an App which can take better videos?
Look how the Desire HD Lags when the light levels change. No excuse in this day and age for that.

3GP in Desire HD including mp4 + AAC-isn't bad format but.....
bitrate in 720p is only mono 32kbps-poor,
On dvd 800x480 is much better mono 64kbps like stereo 128kbps(2x64kbps).
that mind Desire HD can record in better bitrate, but need change a little camera softwear,
This isn't camera phone like PIXON or N8 but have best camera in HTC phones!!!
I check with new Nokia C7 8mpx vs Desire HD and Desire HD have a little better quality photos and video, but Nokia record audio in stereo 128kbps
I hope so that update fram HTC can change this or guys from XDA find a way to do that.
So does anyone know of any software to record video in 720p with improved Audio and camera quality?

Videos formats on desire hd

Hey guys I just bought my desire hd and I'm wondering where I could find a good video file converter for free?
And what attributes I need to apply to get to play properly?

but could get vplayer from the marketplace and it will play pretty much anything

I've had a few 700mb files work but others lag.
350mb files work perfectly though
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Is it normal that the DHD save all the video files I record as 3gpp? Shouln't be avi ?
Sent from my Desire HD
best video format to prepare for the gallery is h264 mp4 encoded at 15000kbps, main profile, level 3.1, its good quality and will play well even 720p, you can use adobe media encoder or free online converters like Red Kawa or super.
sadly no matter how much you compress it seems audio affects the playback smoothness, video without audio plays much better
stupidly the cam coder videos are h264 encoded but in 3gp file format which is hard on devices like the ps3
i have played 2 movies which are around 1.4gb both avi files with mp3 encoding. They play fine when using headphones i suggest to turn on Dolby mobile as the audio setting or SRS your choice.
Hi, I'm hoping someone might be able to help me. My wife recorded some video footage of our little lad using her Desire Z. She then emailed it to my Desire HD, but it will not play. I then tried Rockplayer, but it came back with a message referring to "attachmenprovider/parts/484 to play"- and refused to play it. It's in 3gp format.
I'd have thought there shouldn't be any issues with playing back video recorded on another htc device android device, our am I missing something basic here?
Thanks.
ive recently found out the DHD doesn't work well with video files. i can barely manage to play movies without having to lag. MKV files dont work out of the box, and youd have to buy that crappy VPlayer from the market (which doesn't handle it that good either).
on the other hand, my Nokia N8 (before I sold it for the desire hd) pretty much played everything I threw at it without lags/problems (out of the box too) and using only the stock player.
im not saying the N8 is better than the DHD. but its just a bit disappointing.
In terms of slow video playback, could slow speeds of SD card be the cause?
N8 has its advantages but for now I think it's mainly the camera lens, surprised to hear about the vid playback. I think android needs VLC player.

Best movie convert settings.

Hello DHD owners
I've got my DHD today. I'm familiar with Android as I have used Leo and Desire with same OS. Now I really like the screen on DHD! I want to convert movies and other epic movies/clips I have on my PC. Last year I've ripped all my DVDs to my external hardrive.
Which settings and converter program is best?
Size is not a big deal, 32GB here, quality matters
I'm on costum ROM, overclocked to 1,5GHz. Just so make clear I won't have any issues with playback for lager file sizes. I remember I had this on my Leo while I was on WINMO. :/
Thanks for your time
Sent from my Desire HD
Haha same. The HD2 was the only WinMo phone I actually enjoyed using! Hmmmm well you can convert videos in either 800x480 or 720p, as the Desire HD can playback both. However our phone has a screen res of 800x480, so best to go with the native res. Anyways, for high quality, I always use MP4 video format. Codec, Mp4 or h264. Bitrate, CBR. Approx. 1500kbps. Sound, 128-320kbps. You can also crop video to remove black bars, that's your choice. My arsenal of video converters includes: Pinnacle Studio, AVS, and most of the time DVDPean and Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate. Hope I helped
Note, too high values for audio and video bitrate can cause your device to lag. Keeping your phone OC'd above 1.22ghz while watching a video for 1hr plus may severely overheat your phone.
I found this app. Free Video to Android Converter
It looks a little silly, and nags you everytime you exit, but it makes beautiful movies at native res (800x480) from just about any format (avi,mp4,mkv,mov,wmv). It's also a bit slow, due to only using 1 core (I got 8 on i7).
All converted movies can play in the default player, with hardware decoding of course.
The settings I use is the preset for HTC Desire, Nexus One. Havent had to try any other formats.

DHD native player doesn't play flv format. Unconverted 700Mb video doesn't play smoothly on my DHD. It seems to lag badly.
I have no problems playing video's on my DHD.
It's still stock and i use Rockplayer to play video's.
I download a TV-show from the internets and i put it on my phone and it plays almost without lag.
Okay, guys, I'm back now. I had to flash a new ROM as it did not support HQ video playback. Now, I'm on Android Revolution HD, with LeeDroid Kernel. Overclocked to 2Ghz (!) I'm getting exlent performance.
I had totally forgot that I had Any Video Converter Professional, bought years ago. However, I'm now converthing a 1h 16m long Top Gear epsiode, just to give it a try.
Settings are;
Video Codec: mpeg4
800x480
Video Bitrate: 2500 (just testing it out )
Video Framrate: 25 (what do you think? This is default, should I change it?)
Audio Bitrate: 320
Sample Rate: 44100 (?)
EDIT!
I've rolled back to 1,2Ghz, as I did really not see any big improvment @ 2Ghz. Heat vs. performance ratio is not worth it.
However, I'm still converting that video. The problem is that the output file is about 1GB now And the input is 699 MB
It must be the high video bitrate!
UPDATE:
The quality is amazing! The final size was 1,44GB. But it is just perfect! I'm now converting even more
yet another UPDATE:
The avi files I have converted is in amazing quality. Now I'm converthing a Blueray movie. Lets see how this ends up

Poor Video Audio Sound

I just got an htc desire hd and generally really happy with it. The main gripe tho is why they choose to use a dated codec like 3gp is beyond me with crap 8000khz sound. HD video quality at 720p with dreadfull audio is like putting a ferrari engine in a corsa. Why did they not choose mp4 cd quality 44.1 khz instead of this crap? It's marketed as a multimedia phone with a video format which is, well lets face only compatible with other phones unless you convert it which defeats the whole purpose of having nice prestine hd.
we should have an online petition for this! video recording in mp4 with aac audio!
3rd party recording apps maybe?
Online petition doesn't work anyways.
Sent via psychic transmittion.
Well i sent htc a couple of emails, stating that the audio quality for video is even overshadowed by nokia phones which are 6 years old, why they still use dreadfull audio when literally every other phone on the market from iphones, nokia's sony erricson's all have higher quality audio recording. I find it hard to believe they have done it because of performance issues, most digital camcorders dont have 1ghz processors and they can do it hands down. HTC are still using the same old rubbish low quality audio thats been around on their pda phones since windows mobile 5. It's time to move on, and if its for compatiblity, well how many people send 20 min HD 720p multimedia messages? when no network carriers even support formats or resolutions like that. I think its misleading and false advertising for HTC promoting this phone as having all this great video quality 8mega pixel cam and HD video to completely let us down with zx spectrum like audio quality. What where the HTC designers even thinking is beyond me. Why do they let iphone and nokia, samsung completley walk all over them in the audio department.

I disagree that the Sensation is way better than the Desire HD. Yes it is an evolution of the DHD, but in terms of user experience the phones are still very similar. I won't be upgrading because i dont really think the Sensation is too much of an upgrade (bar newer processor).
With that said, OP, i think you'll be very happy to know that the new Gingerbread update coming anytime now will have LARGELY improved audio. It will have sampling rate of 44.1 KHz and 128 Kbps bitrate. This is confirmed in the leaked version in the development section, i've seen a recording and the sound is way better.
Now one area i cant argue with however is the loudspeaker on the DHD. It's terrible. Maybe the Sensation is better there.

First of all 3gp is a container, not a codec. In that container you'll find the same codecs for the audio and video streams like in the mp4 container used by other camcoders - namely h264 for the video and aac for the audio. The poor quality is due to the codec settings used by the application - 8kHz, 32kbps. Why they did that is beyond me. Maybe the frequency response of the microphone is limited to 4kHz and if this is the case, neither Gingerbread, nor Zebra Cake will fix that.
The micropone can record in pristine 44.1khz quality try using tape machine application, the sound quality is fine, also there appears to be 2 microphones on the htc one for phone calls and another for audio recording. Tape machine allows you to select either or, and they both record in good quality, there could even be the possibility of having stereo records if there are 2.

Like someone else mentioned, .3gp is only the container, not the codec. So you don't necessarily have to reconvert them, just change the container. Should be much faster that way.
Download this program Avidemux: http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/
Drag your videos in, on the left leave Video and Audio as is, and only change Format to MP4. Select save video and make sure you type in .mp4 at the end of the filename (otherwise it wont save as a video). You'll notice that it takes only a couple of seconds to change the container and viola you have an mp4 video
What's wrong with htc? even the new sensation has horrible audio quality, check out this video where they compare the sensation's 1080p recording vs the lg 2x , the guy's voiced sounds high pitched :/
