Other OS and why - XPERIA X10 General

I never understood why people would want another OS on their phone, for example putting Android on a iPhone. Only something like the Htc hd2 do I understand because that phone is dead in the water at this point. but if you want to run something else why did you get that phone in the first place
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

Its for experimental purpose only, just proving that its doable.
I think no one will actually use a dual boot phone for daily use.
If you want to discuss about other OS and why, then answer me this.
Why a lot of people like to customize their phone to works and behave like iPhone (horizontal drawer, put all apps as shortcut in homescreen, change icons to look like iphone, change the lock screen to iphone lock screen).
Now that one never cease to amaze me

/end thread

"iead1" & "Z3X" comments pretty much answered this whole thread. What they exactly said is true.

I kinda agree with the OP on this.. other than doing it for the challenge of proving it can be done.. why? If you want WP get a WP phone and customise that within an inch of it's life.. likewise for Android.. (I suppose I can understand why an Iphone use might do it though I guess, cos there ain't much you can do with ios.)

Iphone unlocker for CDMA Rooted phones?

Is it possible to make custom unlock screens? I know people do make them but is there something like the iphone unlocker? but not an app because they don't work to well. I was just wondering if this was possible, Thanks
point to a direction of what it looks like as I have stayed clear of the iphone and I can see what I can do.
Like this with the battery and everything... Maybe a % in the battery to make it better than the crap iphone(;

that is pretty cool looking, that being said without a seperate apk we could never get it exactly the same but I know NOJ has been doing some really cool stuff with the vanilla lockscreen. I haven touched the vanilla screen yet so he would be the guy to talk to about that. I would send him a PM with the link and see what he says.
Okay I will. Im actually useing his lock screen as of now. I love it, but I just have always loved the iphone one. Also how is he doing that without a seprate apk? or is he using a seprate one?
EDIT: Do you know where I can find a post from NOJ? I can't find him to send him a PM.
I think an apk would be fine. Just like the HtcLockScreen.apk
I think what he meant was all the current ones from the market dont work to well.. Like Lock 2.0, it looks like the iphone but it doesnt work that well with staying as your lock screen.

Is there much point getting one now?

I'm thinking of buying the HTC HD2 but is there much point now, if it won't be getting updated and newer and better phones are coming out?
I'm looking at it as it has the biggest screen(besides the streak which im also considering, but much more expensive)
What would you suggest?

if you actually like winmo as it is, with the way windows phone 7 is shaping up the hd2 could become a very valuable antique.

What has been your phone history? And what do you use or intend using the phone for?
WM, iphone and android suit different ppl and WP7 looks weird imho...
well if you have the patient to wait until the end of 2010 or so, just wait. i didn't have or why don't you try Evo?

Over the last couple of years, ive only used the bold 9000, HTC Desire and iPhone 4, however i sent back the iphone 4 as the ui is getting very boring.
I use the phone more for texts and internet than phone, i primarily want to use it for web browsing, thats why the streak appealed to me, but this is cheaper, im just worried about updates, and the lack of official support after WP7

I can't wait until the end of 2010 i have no phone at present lol. Also im in the UK so the Evo is a no go otherwise i would definitely have it.
if you like bets, get one now.
If the bet goes well, you will buy a "cheap" device which will get a fully functional froyo OS on it when the android devteam has completed the job, and be almost at the level of the Evo, without its bulkiness... and before the thing goes out and the demand increases, making the prices go higher.
If the bet goes bad, you still get a cheap but powerful device with WM on it
Anyway, given my experience with the device, and the market which is available for italy, I would get it again now as well.

Try before you buy my friend.
I've been using winmo for years and I love it. The HD2 is my favorite device yet.
Winmo users generally love to tweak. These forums make tweaking fun and you can usually get whatever you need, want and more for your phone if you're willing to search for it.
That being said, some find winmo and the HD2 an utter frustration. Some lament about buying the HD2 because it doesn't do everything right out of the box.
So if you like to customise, tweak and experiment, you may just love the HD2.
If you like something that works to it's full potential right out of the box, but may not be quite so custimisable and tweakable, perhaps another platform would be better.
i really NEVER recommend ppl a windows phone.. except i know that he can handle it.
i dont know u, so i would recommend android
u NEED to know what u do when u are using winmo, or u will hate it
The more I read about WM7, the more I am glad I have a WM6.5 phone, and I'm not planning to 'upgrade' to such a locked down platform.

I love tweaking, which is another reason for considering this phone, and which is why i got rid of the iPhone 4.
I love the idea of registry tweaks, which may sound weird, and i also love the idea of a winmo device being just like windows on the pc (regarding registry tweaks).
And regarding having everything work out of the box, i find that very boring, im always looking to do new things with a phone.
The only problem i am seeing is the future updates, looking at Android they are going to have constant updates, but obviously winmo 6.5 is not. however if i know that winmo will be getting unofficial updates from devs etc i will be more than happy to buy the HD2.
Thanks for all the replies so far.
Ok, i went ahead and bought a HD2, hopefully i'll enjoy it.
Please post your experiences with the phone.
And how much did you grab it for? US or non?
if you need big screen then definitely go for hd2. i was in your position. but screen size was a dealbreaker. had there one android phone with screen as big as this, i wouldn't have bought hd2

i have to say i agree about the screen.. i have a hd2 and my friend got a desire soon after me.. the screen estate difference is just HUGE...
and i recently ran the android test build side by side with his phone screen beside mine.. the difference just got worse coz the widget icons are much smaller in android compared to the quick link icons in winmo..

Awesome, i cant wait for my HD2 now .
I was getting sick of the headaches after surfing the web on my iPhone 4 due to the small screen.
good choice.....
you made a good choice op. hd2 is my first wm phone and i'll admit, i love it. the tweaking on the phone is good fun. at the moment im running CHT and SPB Mobile Shell side by side as well as having loads of other little tweaks to make the phone my own. theres a ton of really good apps and software floating about the net.
The only bad point i can think of is Opera's non support of 10.1 for wm6.5. Skyfire's pretty usefull for flash though so all's not lost. i'm sure you will love your new phone bud......

[Q] any methods for porting the aria rom to htc mini.

I wana android to my htc mini. But i didn't find the suitable rom. anyone help? thanks!
Currently here roms are still in beta, my suggestion would to select a more popular device that has more support than us
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
the android kitchen can port roms from one device to another. i've messed with it on occasion and just doing the basic port process generally results in the rom loading, but a lot of things not working (bluetooth, wifi, camera, etc).
its a good place to start, though.

True but mine has about 20 min of use right now, and I have trust issues on the net.
Well IMO if you have trust issues then stay away from windows mobile. I just upgraded a month back from a windows mobile phone. Interface worked decent but not only was it restrictive it what it allowed me to do it didn't like me to tinker and customize it the way it worked. At least with the android based phone I can see the inner working, understand how and what is going on. And I can disallow whatever I feel isn't good for me.

Its difficult, with winmo we could shutdown winmo with a app and load a os into the phone through the SD card but still there was alot of compatability issues. I'm assuming its going to be the same the other way. Camera will never work or radio ect..

Probably has to do with the fact that you'd be moving out of the grey area of rom flashing and firmly into pirating since you never attained a winmo license.
Which would also mean most sites wont allow it since your work becomes a liability.

its not pirating really, if so then my tilt2 had pirated software on it, i had htc sense (winmo6.5) ported from the hd2 to it plus i dual booted android 2.1 and had a full fledged linux on at some point
the real problem is the reverse engineering which no one wants to do, and i dont speak for all people but for alot of people winmo is become less than useful not saying it sucks because i loved my tilt2 but it had its limitations that my aria doesnt

That version of Sense you had was reverse engineered to a certain point. I can bet you if you took the cab straight from the hd2 and installed it on the Tilt, it either wouldn't install ir would be very, very buggy.
And as i said, doing this would move you out of that gray area. One could make an argument that you've paid for a license for WinMo and Sense and by flashing these new ROMs you're just updating. You can argue the other side, but thats why its called a gray area.
Android in its most basic form is FOSS. Google's apps aren't, but the OS itself is. You can legally install it on whatever you can get it to run on. To be fair, i don't know how they handle distributing it.
Windows Mobile on the other hand is licensed. You HAVE to pay for a new license otherwise you're pirating the os.

Your right and I'm not trying to be an ass
But to break that license you would hafta sell the software modified. They finally passed a law stating basically if its given to the open public it can be modified all u want untilled is sold then its illegal. The one good thing apple brought upon us
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
Not exactly. I think its if you distribute it, not just selling it. From Engadget:
Basically, they just can't sue you for the specific act of breaking their protections but there's nothing stopping them from putting those protections in there in the first place, or for suing you for an infringement not covered in this exception -- like distributing Apple code in a non- Apple-approved way, or installing illegal or pirated software.

i realize this shouldnt be much of a problem to port
the only problem is probably the bootloader and recovery mode are for different OS's but otherwise these phones are almost exactly the same
although i have no idea how to port anything
Not to annoy anybody, but is there somebody even trying to port Android from the Aria to the Mini at this moment? Or is this a real dead one...?
Since the hardware is almost exactly the same, the only major thing should be a safe way to flash from WinMo to Android, or am I wrong?
Guys, are there any developers around here that can give an indication of how hard it is to port an Aria Android Rom onto the HD Mini? Could it be possible that just putting the Aria Rom on a HD Mini will give a 90% working phone (trackpad/screen/windows button are the only differences as far as i know)?

Yes, this is a hard decision. But I truly love portrait KB. I can type with two hands or one depending on the situation. I don't need super wide keys.
I have had two BB Pearls in the past, and when I had them I thought the landscape KB was going to be awesome. I have had a G1 now for two years with it's landscape KB. I develop iPhone apps, among other things, so with it's virtual KB and the android KB (iPhone sucks without swype lol) I have logged many hours with all the KB types.
Some messages or responses are long, some medium, and some short. With a portrait Slide KB I can use whatever medium I want.
Wow, and the Dell is sexy as hell.
So HD7 has 4.3 inch screen and Dell has 4.1. I'm still leaning towards the Dell

You won't be able to without some sort of hacking, as the manufacturer-specific apps are part of the OEM "differentiation" that Microsoft is promoting.
Why? Is there anything actually worth having? Applications with pointless eye-candy, why would anyone want those?

I'm all for apps that look good but the HTC apps on WP7 don't really seem to serve much purpose at all. The animations take forever and there's lots more usable ways of implementing them.
May be for now htc hub is useless but later may be there is application added by htc that make differance
The Question is .. is all Hubs developed by companies can be easily move from one device to other company device
i liked the Dell device as well, but in a long run i will stick to the HD7 and for the first time in a long time i will be using a phone with out a physical keyboard.....
i will rather have a HTC device then any other as i like to try the goddies from XDA gods (chefs)...
and dell is not selling in Asia anyway... maybe as a second phone i will get the venue pro...
Having had an HD2 for a while and a Touch Pro before that, oh and a TyTn before that, I think HTC's software is just bloaty eye-candy at best.
The app store will cover everything you need anyway.
I like the weather app and the equalizer.. wouldn't mind having them on my Venue Pro.
The Dell Venue Pro would have been perfect (for me) if it had:
1) HTC Locations (/ maps)
2) HTCSense.com functionality
3) Flash (as per the HTC Desire HD)
All Windows Phones have HTCSense.com functionality built in... MyPhone
so, we won't be able to get it.
i'm sure there must be a way to unpack it from the rom and make a (how are the cab's called now?)...

I'd say it was moved from the Dev general forum because you asked about a specific device...
Maybe you could start a new thread in the Dev general (or Win7 Dev) asking about the possibility of extracting the Sense stuff and getting it onto other non-HTC WP7 devices?
yeah but what is the file structure like in comparison to venue pro? Is the application hw or sw based? and how do we recompile the container to install on our side?
we may need a jailbreak =/
I'm only guessing, but I'd say it's only software based and will work on pretty much any WP7 device if it can be pulled from an HTC one.

I have a really bad taste in my mouth over Windows Mobile devices. I owned a HTC Touch Diamond and a HTC dual Touch. Hardware was FANTASTIC, software SUCKED.
It might be not letting go of the past but i'm personally steering away from Windows mobile. In fact i had an Android port on my Dual Touch . That was the only way i could use it, with out wanting to kill someone when i was done with it.

I actually like the metro look. When Windows 8 comes out I want to try and find a way to get it to work on my Asus transformer. I would relish the idea of having devices that all run windows OS's again, esp since I'm a windows dev I could write apps myself if they don't exist. I'm too lazy to learn android atm.
