I'm thinking of buying the HTC HD2 but is there much point now, if it won't be getting updated and newer and better phones are coming out?
I'm looking at it as it has the biggest screen(besides the streak which im also considering, but much more expensive)
What would you suggest?

if you actually like winmo as it is, with the way windows phone 7 is shaping up the hd2 could become a very valuable antique.

What has been your phone history? And what do you use or intend using the phone for?
WM, iphone and android suit different ppl and WP7 looks weird imho...
well if you have the patient to wait until the end of 2010 or so, just wait. i didn't have or why don't you try Evo?

Over the last couple of years, ive only used the bold 9000, HTC Desire and iPhone 4, however i sent back the iphone 4 as the ui is getting very boring.
I use the phone more for texts and internet than phone, i primarily want to use it for web browsing, thats why the streak appealed to me, but this is cheaper, im just worried about updates, and the lack of official support after WP7

I can't wait until the end of 2010 i have no phone at present lol. Also im in the UK so the Evo is a no go otherwise i would definitely have it.
if you like bets, get one now.
If the bet goes well, you will buy a "cheap" device which will get a fully functional froyo OS on it when the android devteam has completed the job, and be almost at the level of the Evo, without its bulkiness... and before the thing goes out and the demand increases, making the prices go higher.
If the bet goes bad, you still get a cheap but powerful device with WM on it
Anyway, given my experience with the device, and the market which is available for italy, I would get it again now as well.

Try before you buy my friend.
I've been using winmo for years and I love it. The HD2 is my favorite device yet.
Winmo users generally love to tweak. These forums make tweaking fun and you can usually get whatever you need, want and more for your phone if you're willing to search for it.
That being said, some find winmo and the HD2 an utter frustration. Some lament about buying the HD2 because it doesn't do everything right out of the box.
So if you like to customise, tweak and experiment, you may just love the HD2.
If you like something that works to it's full potential right out of the box, but may not be quite so custimisable and tweakable, perhaps another platform would be better.
i really NEVER recommend ppl a windows phone.. except i know that he can handle it.
i dont know u, so i would recommend android
u NEED to know what u do when u are using winmo, or u will hate it
The more I read about WM7, the more I am glad I have a WM6.5 phone, and I'm not planning to 'upgrade' to such a locked down platform.

I love tweaking, which is another reason for considering this phone, and which is why i got rid of the iPhone 4.
I love the idea of registry tweaks, which may sound weird, and i also love the idea of a winmo device being just like windows on the pc (regarding registry tweaks).
And regarding having everything work out of the box, i find that very boring, im always looking to do new things with a phone.
The only problem i am seeing is the future updates, looking at Android they are going to have constant updates, but obviously winmo 6.5 is not. however if i know that winmo will be getting unofficial updates from devs etc i will be more than happy to buy the HD2.
Thanks for all the replies so far.
Ok, i went ahead and bought a HD2, hopefully i'll enjoy it.
Please post your experiences with the phone.
And how much did you grab it for? US or non?
if you need big screen then definitely go for hd2. i was in your position. but screen size was a dealbreaker. had there one android phone with screen as big as this, i wouldn't have bought hd2

i have to say i agree about the screen.. i have a hd2 and my friend got a desire soon after me.. the screen estate difference is just HUGE...
and i recently ran the android test build side by side with his phone screen beside mine.. the difference just got worse coz the widget icons are much smaller in android compared to the quick link icons in winmo..

Awesome, i cant wait for my HD2 now .
I was getting sick of the headaches after surfing the web on my iPhone 4 due to the small screen.
good choice.....
you made a good choice op. hd2 is my first wm phone and i'll admit, i love it. the tweaking on the phone is good fun. at the moment im running CHT and SPB Mobile Shell side by side as well as having loads of other little tweaks to make the phone my own. theres a ton of really good apps and software floating about the net.
The only bad point i can think of is Opera's non support of 10.1 for wm6.5. Skyfire's pretty usefull for flash though so all's not lost. i'm sure you will love your new phone bud......

Exist any WM6.1 ROM for HTC Dream ? Please dont ask me why I need this.
Thanks.
No, not going to happen, been asked many, many, many times already.
why not ? where is the problem to cook non official ROM ?
For one, its a waste of a perfectly good phone to put that CRAP on it. If you want a piece of crap, buy a piece of crap.
Second, the required drivers simply don't exist.
What do you men crap ? OK, the second explanation is better.
I think lbcoder got it right. windows mobile IS Junk. I have a Kaiser in addition to the G1. The Kaiser has great hardware minus the KB, small screen, and quiet speaker, but it has a horrific OS e.g. It's slow, locks up, restarts itself for no reason.
The G1 however has a great OS that needs little or no changing at all, but dumbed down hardware.

Bottom line is if you want WinMo, buy a WinMo phone. Most of the hackers working on HTC Dream are working on Android.
Oh yeah and use the search.

Now that I think about it; I sure wouldn't mind the ability to dual boot. Not even sure why but maybe just for that hell of it.
Makes no sense
I had the T-mobile Dash before the G1 and wound up giving the dash to my wife. I was helping her learn to use it and only then did I realise how goofy the setup of it all is. They say the beauty of it is that it tries to emulate the Windows experience, but if my desktop worked like that...I'ld have a mac.

Best post in this thread. Completely true and funny as hell.
That being said I'm STILL excited to see what WinMo 7 brings to the table.
anybody else think the touch vogue & qvga is going to be making a huge comeback? all i see are threads with people selling their touch pros and diamonds to go back to the vogue. i think it is one of htc's most valued ppc's. also with android running so well on it now i really think alot of users will be coming back.
thoughts?
People want the latest & greatest. I don't even want the Vogue but is what I am stuck with because of the stupid thinking over at Verizon. I don't have a data plan & you can only get the touch Pro if you are on a data plan.
No other handset is as mature in the Android space. It is an amazing OS running well enough for everyday use.
I'm keeping my Vogue until I can get an Android phone.

x2... I'm locked into my Alltel/Verizon? Contract til 2010 but luckily I picked up the last two in-stock Vogues they had for the wifey and me for only $80/ea. I initially regretted my decision but now that Android on the Vogue has matured so much that it can be used for everyday use I'm more than thrilled with the decision. Happy to be Rockin' the Vogue!!!

Same, even though the Vogue has worked out for me. I still would rather have a touch pro, or the touch pro 2 once it comes out.

WM is a terrible platform, it doesnt offer anything that android doesnt or at some point wont. Android even runs better on the vogue which was designed for WM. I just dont see why anyone would voluntarily choose WM overandroid. It would be great, if this was 2003.

You can absolutely customize Android. There are apps on the market and tons of downloadable themes. The apps cost a bit of money, and being that we're not really "stable" yet, I haven't bothered to buy them.
And need I point out mssmison's themed builds?

Also, coming from G1. Still getting used to WM.
Wasn't thrilled the first few days, but that was just due to the learning curve. I'm now aware of how customizable WM is, which is great. So many ROM's, so many skins means that we can dial in our phones (no pun intended) the way we want them to be.
The screen and responsiveness on this thing is what is keeping me on it more than anything, though. Plus, I love the HTC music player, photo and video player, and calender. Great looking apps.

I don't like the looks of the custom roms so far...we'll se in the future.
I'm so in between right now.
I was at the TMo store and googled if the HD2 was getting WinMo7 and the first few links said yes, so I bought it (impulse buy, I was there to change my calling plan).
I really was going to get a Nexus One because I like Android but as other posters have said, after the WinMo learning curve, again (this is NOT the first WM phone I've had) I am in between.
This has an amazing screen, hands down. But really, that's where the differences end for me (besides WM and Android)

Yes, but man... does it cost an arm and a leg.
I'm definitely keeping it, I'm using international HD2 in UK
Through my experiences in the old days with Hero and 3GS, I got bored really quick with android and iphone os, but not with HD2/Winmo now. I found myself to be kind of loving to tweak my phone. I love the open-source and customizations of Winmo, still finding a lot to do with my HD2.
However, I really miss some apps and games from android or iphone os, such as: Plants vs Zombies, Angry Birds, Layar Reality Browser and especially Tunewiki. I heard a winmo version of Tunewiki is in developing process, hope it will come soon.

Did you install cookies home tab and editor? If not, you should try that. makes as many quick links as you want. Very Android/Iphonish. Works awesome... Also the new ROM with the Zim touch sensitivity fix makes it pretty rad.
If you want a real man's phone get the HD2...lolol
All joke's aside, it's really a matter of personal opinion: the HD2 uses WinMo, and with the latest ROM versions out there things run pretty smooth.
But if you want Android, then keep the Nexus. In the end, the basic features are the same, it's all about what feels right for you. (God I sound like a hippie...jk lol.)

also..how can i get the original white flip clock with weather on that rom???
From my Personal Experience, i had a nexus one Which i sold and later bought the HD2, i have applied almost every rom available and text messaging lags a lot, also Stock rom is too slow and other roms are smooth and fast but out of the nowhere freeze and give me major problems.
it has better hardware than the nexus but to tel you the thruth, the nexus one with stock everything is so much faster than the HD2, all i can say is try it for yourself, im however swicthing back to the nexus or mytouch slide, because even my g1 was a lot faster than this phone with much less hardware, and i am not joking neither do i mean to say windows mobile sucks, but it is just for me.
if i get flamed, too bad!

Android is so much faster and is so much easier to use than WinMo.
That being said, if you need it for business, go with the HD2.
I had a Nexus 1 for 2 months then sold it and bought my HD2, I love them both, the Nexus 1 is more like an iPhone as far as user friendly. Win Mobile is harder to set up and change but much more powerful. I've contemplated getting another Nexus 1 but the HD2 hardware is so damn sweet, I think I'm staying with the HD2 now and waiting for the HD3 or something else.

Yes, this is a hard decision. But I truly love portrait KB. I can type with two hands or one depending on the situation. I don't need super wide keys.
I have had two BB Pearls in the past, and when I had them I thought the landscape KB was going to be awesome. I have had a G1 now for two years with it's landscape KB. I develop iPhone apps, among other things, so with it's virtual KB and the android KB (iPhone sucks without swype lol) I have logged many hours with all the KB types.
Some messages or responses are long, some medium, and some short. With a portrait Slide KB I can use whatever medium I want.
Wow, and the Dell is sexy as hell.
So HD7 has 4.3 inch screen and Dell has 4.1. I'm still leaning towards the Dell

You won't be able to without some sort of hacking, as the manufacturer-specific apps are part of the OEM "differentiation" that Microsoft is promoting.
Why? Is there anything actually worth having? Applications with pointless eye-candy, why would anyone want those?

Lol, just thought about the other end of the spectrum. Command line phone.
Call ########## -gc -speaker -vol:75
I guess could just write a script if I used it often enough...
Yeah, I like the HTC fluff.

I'm all for apps that look good but the HTC apps on WP7 don't really seem to serve much purpose at all. The animations take forever and there's lots more usable ways of implementing them.
May be for now htc hub is useless but later may be there is application added by htc that make differance
The Question is .. is all Hubs developed by companies can be easily move from one device to other company device
i liked the Dell device as well, but in a long run i will stick to the HD7 and for the first time in a long time i will be using a phone with out a physical keyboard.....
i will rather have a HTC device then any other as i like to try the goddies from XDA gods (chefs)...
and dell is not selling in Asia anyway... maybe as a second phone i will get the venue pro...
Having had an HD2 for a while and a Touch Pro before that, oh and a TyTn before that, I think HTC's software is just bloaty eye-candy at best.
The app store will cover everything you need anyway.
I like the weather app and the equalizer.. wouldn't mind having them on my Venue Pro.
The Dell Venue Pro would have been perfect (for me) if it had:
1) HTC Locations (/ maps)
2) HTCSense.com functionality
3) Flash (as per the HTC Desire HD)
All Windows Phones have HTCSense.com functionality built in... MyPhone
so, we won't be able to get it.
i'm sure there must be a way to unpack it from the rom and make a (how are the cab's called now?)...
cheers all

I'd say it was moved from the Dev general forum because you asked about a specific device...
Maybe you could start a new thread in the Dev general (or Win7 Dev) asking about the possibility of extracting the Sense stuff and getting it onto other non-HTC WP7 devices?
yeah but what is the file structure like in comparison to venue pro? Is the application hw or sw based? and how do we recompile the container to install on our side?
we may need a jailbreak =/
I'm only guessing, but I'd say it's only software based and will work on pretty much any WP7 device if it can be pulled from an HTC one.
