Currently using a Nexus One, actually have 2 of them. Have the opportunity to make a straight trade for a G2 for one of my N1's.
Other than the keyboard and "4G" connection, is there anything that really is different about these hardware wise?
I know the N1 will get updates faster, but with the use of custom roms this does not affect me. Also, dont have much use for a keyboard, so would this even be a beneficial trade in anyway?
Guess i am just a little confused, any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
G2 is pretty much better in every way except the screen. I have both.
I had a Nexus One and then got a G2 in a BOGO offer at T-Mo. I find myself using the Nexus more. The G2 has some weird issues, like updates to Google Apps that are pre-installed causing force closes (Google Earth, for one, and I can't install the new version of Maps because it constantly runs and shows up as 80% on battery usage when I check to see why it's draining). I also hate how bulky/heavy it is (and it's more annoying since I don't use the keyboard). I have small hands so I find it more comfortable to hold my Nexus. If you use a case (which I need, I tend to drop phones) the phone doesn't stay fully closed due to how the cases snap on.
I guess it depends on your usage. Since you'll be keeping a Nexus, then maybe it'll be fine. If you won't miss the second Nexus, then go for it.
Thanks for the input so far.
I think one of the unknown factors that i am trying to decide is....will the N1 get updates as long as the G2 will? I know the N1 is a developers phone, but with the NS coming out, do any of you think the N1 will stop getting updates although the hardware may very well still support it? With the G2 being 6-8 months newer, will it get updates longer in the future than the N1?
I know we really dont know the answer to this, but it would be interesting to see what you guys think.
Also keep in mind that the G2 is SIGNIFICANTLY heavier than the nexus one. i think it's almost a half-again heavier and that can be a big deal.
If you are going to have a N1 extra I say do it! I have a N1 and have used a G2 before. I hate keyboards built into a phone but that is just my preference. I would not worry about the N1 loosing support because of the NS the N1 I think will always be supported and updated if not always at least until the N1 can not handle newer Android OS. Only then will I upgrade to what ever Nexus is available at that time.
Trade and if you hate it find someone who will trade you for a NS or a N1 again!!
In contrast to Carlos' opinion, I would actually say the screen is BETTER than our N1s. My gf has a G2 and its screen is much sharper than mine. If you're into gaming, I'm guessing the multitouch would be better too. On the downside, it's bulkier because of the unnecessary keyboard.

I think the keyboard is what really makes it the G1's successor.. people were waiting for that.
this is a tough decision. i love the G2 because it's build quality and materials are just like the nexus one, which i love. but i never use a physical keyboard, so that's wasted space to me. but the g2 has the better snapdragon CPU and better GPU, but the nexus one has a better form factor.
since you will still have a nexus one after the trade, go for the g2.

The screen is sharper because it is a SLCD like some of the newer N1's, but it uses a back light so the blacks aren't as deep as our AMOLED N1s. My Co-Worker has one and I like it.... but would I trade it for my N1... no.
The G2 is noticeably heavier and thicker. The optical sensor works and supposedly it has a "trackball light" notification around it but I haven't seen it in action. While I dislike keyboard phones, it is comparable to the Nexus. They truly look like brothers.
I don't know if a G2 could replace my Nexus, but if you have 2 N1's and looking for something different then it might be worth a trade.
You guys have been really helpful. Some really good points have been made about both the N1 and G2.
Now i gotta sleep on it and figure out what i decide to do. Will let you guys know!
Leaning towards keeping the second N1 right now....
The G2 is Free on T-Mobile right now if that helps your decision.
yes free G2 and call 611 and say cancel and if you have been a long time customer and paid your bills on time you can ask for the $20 data plan.
I have both phones and I'm thinking about going back to my Nexus one. Few bugs with the G2 have been bothering me. GPS takes awhile to start up and some map issues, which is a big deal for me.
Rooted, they both run very smoothly. I like the weight and the size of the N1 compared to the G2. Less obvious in the pocket and easier to slide out. [Rooting on the N1 was a cake walk compared to the numerous steps and complications with the G2.]
I only use the keyboard while driving (ya, I know it's a bad habit that I need to break) but I can feel that over long uses of the keyboard can lead to future problems more specifically in your thumbs. The hinge gets loose, I've dropped the phone a few times and the screen always snaps open.
What makes me want to use the N1 more is the trackball alerts. G2 is only limited to white and I get tired of checking to see if it's something important or if it's something I can ignore. Also the screen on the N1 seems to be better than the G2 along with the auto brightness sensor.
Girls seem to like playing with my N1 more... just saying
Same dilemma
Well I have the same question. First off, I appreciate this post in general, everyone definitely seems to have good input and good opinions that they back up well. I have kind of the same "issue" so to speak. I am getting a new G2 tomorrow, but I know someone who is willing to give me 100 dollars plus a mint condition n1 for it, what do you guys think I should do? I'm just afraid that in terms of day-day function, the n1 will be slower. Any info is much appreciated!
I considered getting a G2 for a while as well. A few things turned me off:
1. The size of the thing compared to a N1 - this thing is a hefty brick!
2. "Pure" Google, not really...seeing how TMobile conveniently removed tethering, but this can be solved through root
3. The MMS bugs
4. The N1 Car/Home dock are just too slick to give up.

yeah i just cant stress enough how excellent the color trackball is on the n1. having color blink in succession, so when i'm at work and i see it blink from red to green to blue to yellow to cyan, and instantly KNOW what each of my 5 messages are, is truly useful. its more useful then anyone without it could ever understand, and its highly under rated i think by many. it may sound cheesy to say "i like colors", but talk about functional and cool at the same time. the perfectly centered nipple just looks classy.
Is it just me or is the nexus just sexiest phone. not trolling just every time i see one i want it. best looking by far.
I remove mine from its case as soon as I get home, just can't stand its looks being spoiled It might also just be me but it feels seriously slick as well!
I like the simplicity of it. No chrome, bezels, etc. Not that those are necessarily bad things but depending on the design, sometimes it gets cluttered.
the nexus is freaking beautiful. prob the nicest phone i've ever had or seen. i have it out of the case now just to enjoy using it naked! i actually hate this though because i keep avoiding upgrading to a new phone cause none are as good as the n1, but at some point i will have to switch!
I agree. Nexus One is one of the sexiest looking devices out there :drools:
I was real sad that I had to sell my Nexus One because of the T-mobile/Att merger but, outside of a white iPhone 4, no other phone even comes close

You didn't have to sell your phone because of the merger, not yet at least. The merger hasn't even started yet. Maybe in a year or two it will be necessary, but a lot will change over that time.
It's extremely sexy! Just ask the girls at AVN!
I was in love with my vibrant--then I got an N1 for my other line and I kinda neglect the sammy goodness now. The vibe is definitely jealous.
I like it but I think it would look so much better with the G2's trackpad that lights up!
If there ever is an HTC nexus 2 I hope they simply update and refine the Nexus Ones look and features but don't do something extreme and for the love of God keep the damn trackpad, or a trackball.

i agree with you, but it wont happen. HTC will do every single thing opposite of what we want, and then do things nobody would have cared about in the first place. i'd bet money on it!!
i'm sure they'll remove the trackball and give no notifications, then make some solid back so no extended battery possible.

I have to agree with you and have said this in other forums... the N1 is the sexiest consumer electronics device so far in my opinion. I like the industrial design of the iPad 1 and the iPhone 4 a lot, but this phone just feels so good in the hand and its metal casing and soft touch accents make me never put a case on it just because I love the slim form factor in my hand and pocket too much. only thing I did was keep an invisibleShield on it at all times.
I think I actually prefer the look of the a HTC Pyramid a little more than the Nexus One. The simplicity of the Nexus S has also caught my eye. Overall the Nexus One may win... however, if Apple made a cell-phone sized iPad, I think I would prefer that to anything else hands-down. The original HTC Desire is also nice looking...
I love my Nexus One!
It's TeflonĀ® coating looks simply stunning.
I probably won't upgrade until HTC Pyramid is out and about.
Up until now only the nexus one and the pyramid made me call them "sexy".

I like the Pyramid design. It's very similar. The Thunderbolt/Aspire are nearly as nice as my N1. I really like my case it shows off the front, but it's still not as sleak and nexy as it is w/o it!
I love the trackball. It will never be the same w/o it!
Those samsung phones are Uugly!
Love the teflon coating ... very unique.
No doubt when I got it I bought it along with ATT captivate. I almost wanted to sell my n1 over my captivate. I was crazy I tell you crazy. But yeah phone is not too big but perfect. I like it Alot cuz you can mod. I love modding. Cars, bikes and my phone. Lol.

The phone isn't going to win any aesthetic prizes but it looks like very post iPhone mobile out there, nothing hideously ugly but nothing amazing. It's just a massive 4.8 inch OLED screen which is amazing to look at that you aren't going to be looking at the rest of the phone.
All this pentile complaints are unfounded, most of the people complaining weren't at the event so don't know what it looks like in person. Wait till the phone is in stores and then make your decision, however I really doubt at 306PPI and 720 resolution that you'll see a difference side by side with the GS2, unless you try and find a fault.
Comes with the CPU that we expected and has benchmarked well already, has a GPU that I was disappointed with at first but also has benchmarked better than anything else out there atm. 8MP camera is the norm, it isn't all about MPs anyways, I'm much more interested to see if the pink spot in the camera has gone and if the lag gone from the GS2 as well. So I'm not disappointed with the hardware at all, it looks like it'll be the fastest and have a good enough camera.
Sorry for admitting this but I think Touchwiz is better than stock Android. I tried to go from Touchwiz back to stock GB on the GS2 as everyone said it was crap and I couldn't, it had much better features. Looking at Samsungs new updates to it for ICS, it just looks amazing and much better than stock ICS, which I thought was a major disappointment. S Voice shuts up the Apple fanbois and the feature I'm excited for is the Picture in Picture stuff, that looks worth it alone for me. I dunno who Samsung have hired to make Touchwiz good since the GS2 but they should be paying them more lol.
I just don't see how people complain about the phone, what do they expect? Yeah the phone is made out of plastic, have you ever owned an iPhone 4? If you drop it the back shatters and the metal always gets dented or scuffed, I used to own one before the GS2. I personally think Plastic is a much better material for a device you will probably drop and most people get an iPhone and put a cheap plastic cover on it and never see the phone under it either. So that makes the phone look worse and makes it much bigger, it probably gets dirt under it and scratches the phone anyways. I dropped my GS2 many times and it never shattered or broke, if the back cover broke then just buy another one, plastic is cheap to replace!
The other great thing is it has a micro sd slot and removable battery, which are features you'd all be moaning are gone if they tried to make the phone out of another material. All these other phones are made Unibody to make them feel more sturdy and yet they lack what people on these forums want.
I don't get the complaining, I'm going to see it in a store and if I like it in person then buy one. I think it looks great and what I expected from the GS3. All the leaks too didn't big the phone up to being this mad crazy super phone that changes the world or whatever. So I don't see what people were expecting...
I have ur same opinion, totally agree
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Same opinion also.
Its the iPhone effect as I call it - Everyone will always find something to moan about but will still end up buying one and loving it. It will sell in the millions regardless.
Pretty much agree. I think the phone looks pretty decent, then again the whole zen theming is kinda my thing anyway, so I might be kinda biased. Also I really don't understand whats the problem with the homekey, I actually MUCH prefer having a real homekey than onscreen buttons... They take up screen space cause burn in and I hit them by accident ALL THE TIME.
The screen is a bit of a letdown but I think AMOLED HD+ is just not ready yet and with that resolution pentile isn't that much of a problem. Also once you go AMOLED you can never go back, those washed out blacks on an LCD are just unaccaptable for me..
People were expecting WAY too much. If they really did use a ceramic body people would complain about the pricing because it would be a hell lot more expensive. The hardware in this phone is very good ,zero shutter lag and the improved camera software are really great and some of the gimmicks look really practical (I can see me use popup play all the time). Oh and btw. with the tiny camera sensors in smartphones image quality will actually get worse by bumping up the Megapixel count, but I guess people will never understand that..
TouchWiz is not the most beautiful launcher out there, but it is one of the smoothest (the new version looks even smoother) and I find alot more appealing than Sense. Sense is actually one of the reasons I'd never get a HOX along with the poor unreplacable battery and the lack of an mircrosd card slot.
Once it hits the shelves I'm sure people will stop complaining and see what a nice device samsung has made here. It is not a revolutionary update but it is a pretty good update and I will use it until the next S phone comes out or if the other companies will come to their senses and give us back microsd card slots and removable batteries.
Same here, personally I love the look, what were HTC thinking with the no SD or replaceable battery.
What happens in a year or so when all the batteries start falling over!
I think this version of Touchwiz looks the best personally and I love the new icon style, it feels much more like Ubuntu or something.
The features in Touchwiz though just make it much better than stock ICS, that is if they work...
Yep, i'm bored of the iphone look and welcome change.
Well said folks and i agree totally, look forward to getting this phone
Can't agree more. The pebble blue looks great. The only thing I still worry is the battery life. I hope it is better than gs2 with the 2000 mah battery. I have been spoiled.

I think it looks great and possibly even better when you get it in your hands. And it's a distinct samsung design. They have a good brand and it's time to trust in it, I think.
I for one did not like the design one bit when I first saw it, but then it kind of grew on me, and I've now pre-ordered two. The whole "designed for humans" slogan didn't make much sense to me, but after actually taking the time to investigate the shape of the sgs3 up close, it dawned on me just how comfortable the thing will be in your hands. The iPhone 4/4S is in my opinion absolutely horrible when it comes to ergonomics, and the SGS2 does not win any prizes in that category either, and now Samsung has designed an ergonomically sensible phone that will fit into your hand perfectly, and thus has been designed with human use in mind. Instead of just having something pretty to look at, like the post 3GS iPhones have been, we now have something that'll be comfortable to handle and hold for long periods of time.
I for one can't wait to get my hands on my new phones!
Will buying depending on when its released for us. I do hope a Bigger battery comes out around release with it being a slim 2700 or even 3000 would be amazing. Add a little bit to the phone and its fine.
I think it looks ok.. Nothing really to dislike. I would say the Samsung widgets could do with some attention. The widgets on my sgs2 are inconsistent. Look at the agenda widget next to the clock. It looks like they have been downloaded from different developers. If they had made the widgets look consistent that would be an improvement. Look at sense for example. The widgets are slick.
The weather widget on the sgs3 is ugly and won't really fit with many wallpapers.
I find this quote applicable:
The take-home message: People don't like change. The Galaxy S III represents a departure from the design aesthetic the S-line has carried on for the last two years. Instead of more of the same, Samsung opted to continue along the design route it forged with the Galaxy Nexus. And guess what? It's welcomed. Personally, I'm tired of the rectangular phones.
...Samsung didn't cater to the sheep-mentality. Earlier I said, it met all my expectations. I was wrong. It went beyond expectation. Samsung delivered gave the world a stand-out [completely different] device....The trust that Mr. Savov indicates is being lost is untrue. The opposite is valid: Samsung continues to build trust among it's faithful, while earning and winning the trust of newcomers by pushing the boundaries in its latest flagship. Like most outrageously designed products (Bangle's BMW designs come to mind), at first, they startle, but over time, you come to appreciate how far-reaching the design perspective was. Samsung is looking ahead to what we will understand to love, once we dispense with the "sheepish" attitude that drawn to the same old rectangular slab that employs the same old tired heuristic.

Which is not to say I agree with him on the S3's "beauty" and "falling in love", but that a lot of the reactionary crap spouted here was just because people hate change. The same thing happens everytime facebook makes a major UI change, then people get used to it. Given this, there is a minor irony in that "sheep" thing.
I honestly don't know why there is so much backlash on the design. It looks great!
The ugliest phone this generation has got to be the Nokia Lumia series.
1. rear flash and speakers. way too exposed
2. not a big deal but it does bother me. just make it smaller.
3. home button. if they kept curve on both sides the same it would look like the shape of the phone, it would look nicer.
4. curves too much and looks like the top part is also smaller...should be the other way around if you want to save the phone from dropping.
5. size. for people who wants a bigger screen. that's where the Note comes in. but for a phone to use with one handedly and with the thumb. it say it's too big for the majority.
might change my mind later down the road, who knows.
prob still get it, just to toy around and its newer but not for full price.
The front is very identical to Nexus devices which I like, but the back is quite metrosexual, they should have given its some pattern, which would help with grip too. I guess they'll be some custom back cover for it. It would have looked nicer with the curved body.
I just bought a Nexus instead, so if anyone asked me what it is, I'll say its the new SIII: http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/2707/nexuss3k.jpg
Will wait till Christmas and get myself a global SIII when it lowered price after the American versions are released. Hopefully the price lowered as fast of a rate as the Nexus, by $350 after six months, but unlikely this time as quadcore is still new and S series is popular.
Don't forget, there were quite a few complaints about the S2 when it came out.
Same exact comparisons were made against the sensation
I do like most of the external design except for the rear battery cover. Maybe someone would make a nice replacement cover that's less slippery
I disagree with the op,
I think this phone will indeed win in the looks department. Like i said before I was too overhyped initially. Expecting it to be made with T1000 metal with Phasers shooting out the side. Now, I can see that it's one of the most beautiful minimalist phones ever made. I think it will win in the aesthetic category.
All are really crazy in Selling their phones to buy the Nexus 4 , also with such a great price. Should I do the same , i am confused. I think let Nexus4 play around for some days and then grab it. What should i do?
Basically I'm thinking "failure" is a relative term. Even if the Nexus 4 is a fantastic failure, it is still worlds better than my current phone, and damned cheap without forcing me into a contract. So I'm getting one ASAP, if for a couple months it can only utilize 50% of it's hardware capabilities, it is still twice my current phone, and easily the equal of any phone that is $350 off contract. And once it really is operating at the peak for what its specs say, then it will blow $700 phones out of the water too.

My thoughts exactly. It's a huge improvement on the phone I'm using now. For $300-$350 I'd rather buy this brand new than a used phone without warranty. And it's just so sexy looking. (At least I think so.)
I'm honestly not worried about most of the complaints, with the exception of battery life, but I think it will iron out when the actual production model and/or software are released.

lol, the only thing I don't like is that it is completely flat, I loved the curvature to the S and Gnex. Other than that I think it looks spectacular, and the back is sweet. same question
How likely is it that there are issues with the first production round, performance-wise (i.e. not the glass back), which can't be solved with a software update? I'm a little naive, and I tried a bit to search for an answer, but this thread is the closest I came up with.
Based on the wording of your question and being your first post--welcome--I would wait. Always a chance for something not right. I bought the first Nexus--N1--sight unseen from Google when they came out. Wanted to root and flash. It had a bad touchscreen, as most did, but livable.
Many people here are hard core flashers and want cutting edge phones... So, they don't worry about the risk.
Unless you are in that category or have need to buy now, I would wait.
I don't understand why people are so concerned with the gorilla glass on the back. Does the gorilla glass on the front not breakable?

Because it is something extra to break. We accept glass fronts because they are necessary. It's like windows in your house, there is a general amount of structure that most people are okay with sacrificing to have windows. But you wouldn't want your entire house glass.
Personally I like the glass back and am willing to just be careful fore sake of aesthetics. A lot of people don't think the looks are worth the extra breakable surface.
I have an S3 and have thought about switching, but I really dig the S3's huge screen and fancy software features. I am very conflicted on this... the S4 Pro is nice but how much difference is it going to make in day to day operation.

If you have it front and back--you double your chances of something breaking, excluding the sides. It looks good, not sure why it is needed though. It would not stop me from buying it, if i wanted the phone. Deciding btwn Note 2 and N4 atm.

For day to day not much at all to be honest most current android devices can handle day to day operations well.
Personally the N4 has the better screen compared to the SGS3 but that's my opinion. You've got removable battery and expandable storage on your device.

I have been pondering about upgrading my N1 (too old but usable with a variant of CM9). Wait for full review on the device like audio quality before jumping in. Apart from non-changeable battery and no micro SD card slot (and maybe glass back), this phone looks tempting to me. Not sure why they don't have 32G version yet.
I have been using my nexus 4 on at&t's network for a little over a month now and I cannot find one downfall of this phone... I applied a Dbrand black leather sticker on the back glass and that just made the phone feel more professional.. almost like a blackberry 9900. (but more functional) My question is, has anyone found a phone that can shake a stick at the nexus 4 as far as fit and function. I have a Htc One and i am thinking of returning it because I see myself using the nexus 4 and leaving the one at home more often then not.

I'm a fan of the N4 but you have to be realistic. There are plenty of phones now which can easily be considered better than it (e.g. HTC One, S4, LG OG Pro, Xperia Z) and while none of them are anywhere near as good a deal as the N4, most are better phones for the majority. Only a few people actually care about updates outside of XDA and don't really know how awesome stock Android is compared to other UIs.

Yes it's too good
I wasn't really impressed with the S4 or the HTC one tbh. Overpriced for basically the same specs you get with the N4. Samsung phones are loaded with bloat now,and feel like a hollow plastic toy. You can hardly tell its android anymore with the TW bloat interface. Yea the HTC one has a nice build quality, but is it really worth shelling out almost 700$ for? I don't think so. I will never buy another non nexus device again. (All personal opinion) I am extremely happy with my N4. I haven't had 1 single issue with it. I get 2.5 days of heavy use and about 5 hours screen on time with my ROM kernel combo. And for 350$ you cant beat it.
Keep the Nexus, return the One.

Now the rumors of the Note 3 being like 6 inches or so, now that's comical.
The current 5.5 is fine to me.

Yea don't get me wrong, it is a really nice phone. The screen is large and vibrant. The specs are great. I just think its too large, by the time you get a case on it, its even bigger. It would drive me nuts in my pocket.
