This guide is for the situation where your phone is not booting and the three-button combo for getting into download mode is not working for some reason, and you have tried all the other solutions in the FAQ. It won't help you if you can already get into download mode but something else is going wrong with the flashing process, for example you can't get Odin to communicate with the phone.
If the phone's bootloader is still intact, that is you see at least the white Galaxy S/Samsung/AT&T logo or the "PC ! Phone" logo on the screen, you should be able to force it into download mode by connecting a homemade jig that simulates the Samsung "Anyway" field test jig. You can buy these jigs online, or make them using a micro USB plug and a resistor.
If your phone screen is always black, that is it does not display the white Galaxy S/Samsung/AT&T logo when you switch it on, then sorry, this jig will not help you.
If this helps you recover your bricked phone, please donate to the CyanogenMod developers: go to this thread and click the link under "SUPPORT US". Thanks.
If you don't want to buy a pre-made jig, you can build one yourself from a few parts. You will need:
1. a micro USB plug that you can solder onto. If you are not confident with soldering or you just want a tidy solution, buy this micro USB breakout board from Sparkfun.
Otherwise, get a cheap micro USB cable and cut the sleeving off the plug with a sharp knife. You cannot just wire onto the cable because this jig uses a normally-unused pin (pin 4) of the micro USB plug which will not be connected to the cable.
2. a 301k resistor. You can buy one from Digikey, or make one up by joining several resistors together in series, for example 3x100k and 1x1k. The resistor value does need to be fairly accurate (I would guess within 1% of 301k) to trigger download mode. 300K seems to work for everyone so far.
Procedure:
1. Solder the resistor across pins 4 and 5 of the micro USB plug. Do not do this with the plug plugged in to the phone as the heat could damage the phone's USB socket. The pins are shown in this diagram ("Micro-B"). On the Sparkfun micro USB breakout board they are labelled "ID" (pin 4) and "GND" (pin 5). When the plug is plugged in to the phone they will be the pins closest to the headphone socket.
2. Make sure the phone is fully switched off by pulling the battery, waiting 5 minutes, then replacing the battery. Do not switch the phone on.
3. Connect the rigged USB plug to the phone. Try not to touch the pins on the back of the plug or the resistor(s) as you are plugging it in, as your skin resistance could affect the resistor value seen by the phone. You do not need to press the power button. After a few seconds the phone should go into download mode.
4. Disconnect the rigged USB plug and connect a regular USB cable from your PC to the phone, then you should be able to flash using Odin.
For more information on how this works see this thread and this thread.
I knew you guys would figure it out - well done. I will build one before I attempt rooting and flashing

Well we only have one confirmation so far. If it does work for you please let us know what state your phone was in prior to using it as I'm interested to see what problems it can repair.

I would try but my phone is with samsung and I'm not all too handy with a soldering iron =)
Hi, anyone have pictures of the cable with the resistor soldered? I am just unsure where to solder it, is it on the micro usb cable side or the standard usb (on which end of the cable?) and which part of the cable do you need to cut open? (i heard there is a pin/wire that usually isn't used?)
Also, if i decided to go with the breakout board, i would only have to get the board+301k resistor plugged in the 4 and 5 pin and plug it in the galaxy and would boot in download mode?
Thank you very much!
Thank You!

Only the micro USB plug has 5 pins (regular USB plug has 4) so it has to be the micro USB plug. You have to cut the sleeving (insulation) right off the plug. You can disconnect the cable from the plug or leave it attached, but don't plug the other end (the regular USB end) into anything.

Were you able to flash it after it went into download mode? Did you try pulling the battery for a while?
Thanks for your reply. I got it working by your suggestion. Seen many others saying leave the battery out for a while and also seen peeps saying do the 3buttonbootwhile inserting the battery.
As my home made jig was soldered with the pins out of the plug I wiggled it/them about in the socket to ensure a connection was made, then I inserted the battery.
Panic over. Flashed JP1 with 512. not been on for long so cant confirm all is working but looks promising.
I am putting this gadget in a !!!!!!S.A.F.E!!!!!! place.
Also will be available for borrowing in the S/SE UK if anyone is interested.
Im gonna leave playing firmware for while as my heart cant take much more at the mo
Many thanks to OP and others for various tips.
The short answer is yes

Ill see what i can do when i get home. The hardest bit was to make sure the soldered tops of the pins dont touch. Had to redo them a few times. Resistors got hot too but as it worked im confident i didnt bust them.

Thanks everyone who helped solve this problem. I have a i9000 and flashed it with the captivate rom. I could not charge the phone so I tried to reflash with original software, I used the 803 pit file. It stopped and i waited for about 10 minutes and disconnected the phone and I got the screen of death.
I did this last week and was going to take it to Samsung after the Froyo upgrade came live and I was going to say that it happened when I tried to upgrade.
Guess what I made this USB factory jig and I was so happy that it went into download mode. This made me so happy many thanks and i will wait until the official upgrade comes.
I used a old nokia USB connector stripped the plastic off and bought a 300k resistor from Jaycar for 45 cents and this must be the best 45 cents I have ever spent.

My Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is 2 years old. The last few months, I have had problems charging the phone and connecting it to the computer.
In order to charge, I have to "wiggle" the cable into the right position. When I try connecting to the computer via cable, the phone appears to disconnect again within few seconds, and then reconnect - I am returned to the screen that shows the green android figure and that asks if I want to connect to the computer.
I have tried with a new USB cable. Charging gets easier (not so much "wiggling" required), but the problem with connecting to the computer is the same.
Does anyone know what the problem might be? Is this a hardware weakness, so that Sony should repair it? Or should I just buy a new phone?
Hardware Weakness
Should probably rephrase... Is this a KNOWN hardware weakness with this type of phone, so that it should be covered by the reclamation rights?
If not, the store will probably claim that this is my fault, or a device only expected to last 2 years, so that I have to buy a new phone.
Had a similar problem, solution?? Well is easy, if look (in your phone) into thd little microusb hole, youll find a little object like a sheet. Just move it. Up or down with a little screwdriver. Try the usb if not working move it upside down. JUST DO IT WITH CAUTION THAT PIECE IS TOO WEAK AND IS DANGEROUS. IT WORKED FOR ME BUT I CANNOT WARRANTY ITLL WORK FOR YOU

I've got the same problem.. but there is no sw solution (of course..), so you have to fix it manualy.. I wanted to do it myself, but there are too small micro ****s, so I left that... I'll try it later..
I just had the same problem as yours and I asked for a technician to solder a new USB port for me. And he did it, I no longer have this problem. It is a very annoying problem, sometimes when you're transferring datas, the USB would disconnect with a just a slight bump.
I've got this problem on my x10 also, but beware - it may be something as simple as the USB cable is worn out. I thought my problem was with the phone, until I used a car charger with it and it charged perfectly - no wiggling of the cable required.

Thanks for all the replies.
Unfortunately, it is easier to buy a new phone than to go through the 3-weeks process of having a service center determine if the problem can be solved and if it will cost me.
Fortunately, I'm able to use another phone to copy the data from my memory card onto my computer, before I switch to a new phone
To the last poster: As written, I tried with a new cable, without much luck.
Hi,
I've got a Samsung N910 - no suffix, just N910 as shown under the battery. It has 2 SIM slots, the USB connector is at the top, it has no hard (clickable) Home button, just a soft button as part of the screen. I can't find it in any lists of the variants of the Samsung N910*. I need to replace the USB socket because it won't charge but I have no idea which part to buy. Can anyone help me to identify this phone / tablet. I've included some photos.
Thanks.

N910 is galaxy note 4 and that my friend is definitely not a note 4. It looks like it could be a note 4 battery but not the phone. If it's a Samsung just boot do download mode. Hold volume down and power and home. It will show you the model there
That's not a Note 4 bro
This chinese phone..so u have to open your phone in order too see cable connecter u have
So after weeks of trying to figure this out I've found what's causing the problem. Not sure how to fix it. When the phone stays on the charger the rotate will stay on. If your rotating stopped before plugging your phone or the charger then simply plug in ur charger and then restart and once ur charger stays plugged in then it should auto rotate some people my need to restart more than once. So in my view I'm thinking there is some electrical problem or lack of power or some how it's linked to the USB port. Please try it and report if u get the same result. Hopefully this will lead to someone finding a solution. Maybe someone can change their USB port and let us know if that solved the problem.

most of auto rotation become malfunction is because lib file missing. especially if u're in custom rom or stock but doing some debloat.
check in your system/lib folder for file libgnustl_shared.so.
if missing, then auto rotate will not work. but in your case maybe hardware/sensor related problem.

It would seem like hardware because the file is there.

Ok. So I can say for sure my rotation issue is related to the usb port. At the begining when I plugged in the usb cable and restarted my phone the rotation would continue working until I removed the usb cable and even for a few minutes after removing it would still work
So what I did was get a very small piece of paper and made it into a little ball and push it under the contact of the usb port right up to the back so that the usb cable could still fit properly. The paper is just to brace the usb connection upwards a little and in doing do so my phone even charging better seeing I had charging issues so I guess it's part of the issue. Now I have normal rotation for weeks.
If rotation stops it's because the usb cable has crushed the paper too small so I just replace the paper but so far it's all good. I just dnt have the interest to do a usb port change but I think that would be a more permanent solve. Hope this helps. Just sharing my experience to those of you who have the same issue and can't find a fix.

Usb port changed and rotation working flawlessly. I even recorded over 6000 steps and more than 12 minutes walking. Notified by S health, haven't seen that in a long time

OK guys sad to say I'm bk on this because after awhile my rotation stopped again. I don't know if the replacement USB port is going bad again as it was a Used USB port or its something else but I have found another fix which seems to be working a few days now.
So this fix will require disassembling your phone again.
What I did was disassemble my device and when I reached to the main board I used a little screw driver to pry off the shine piece of covering that covers some of the chips which includes the gyroscope chip. U guys can google to see where the chip that controls the gyroscope is on your s5.
Then I folded a piece of tape and placed it on top of the gyroscope chip just thick enough so the metal covering when place back on it will squeeze the tape down on the chip. After all that is done reassemble ur device and try it out.
On a side not my proximity sensor was not working properly either and I did the same thing. Folded a piece of tape and place it behind the proximity sensor it will be tight again when phone is reassembled. So far its been working for me so I hope this helps.
I know its an old device and most of u might not see the need to fix a device this old but for those of you who like tinkering with ur device like myself u should try and let me know if it works for u.
HAPPY NEW YEAR.

i have samsung SM-G906S. lately i have been facing the problems with auto rotation, proximity sensor and auto brightness adjustment. All these have stopped working. These problems are not with hardware because they vanish when i factory reset the phone of reinstall OS using samsung smart switch. but these problems occur again after some time (a month or two). seems like some problem with samsung firmware. too bad the official support from samsung has stopped for this phone.
Hello xda developers users, today i found out that my dad broke his phone. At first i knew that local shops would'nt be able to help since its not something that has been bought by one. The bigger problem is that, the usb debugging wasnt enabled so i cannot pull out all the pictures. I looked up everywhere for a solution and there was no program that supports this type of phone. I have also tried plugging it into the pc but it showed that:" please insert driver g". tried everything i could so if someone could please find me something to take out the important pictures of the phone i would really appriciate it. ( he doesnt have any type of backup since he barely knows how to use a phone)
Have a nice day!
unfortunately when there is no display you can't do much... you can't enter recovery or put your phone in MTP mode to copy files from internal memory. that's why PC can't install driver. By default with USB is only for charging.
I got Redmi 5 Plus using Tapatalk
If display is working but no touch, you can connect a USB mouse with a OTG cable.
No picture at all, try to get another S3 and swap the mainboard or buy a new display, there is new stock at some sellers at AliExpress for reasonable price.
There are YouTube videos about changing the display. You can buy a whole new display (with tools) from Aliexpress. I bought such a set for about USD 55 and replaced a broken display. It succeeded otherwise well, but the front camera does not work any more - maybe the tiny connector is open... The operation takes some time and patience, watch the video before byuing a new display!
