Hello,
I was having huge battery problems with all kernels and all builds untill ..... i discovered that in Android it takes really long time to cache the pictures in the gallery. I noticed that it always reads every picture file (icons, ebooks cover etc) and i basically removed the icons (i had dinik icon pack) after this, without restart battery got down from around 150-300 mA to 10-11 mA in stand by mode, which is the normal reported from many ppl.
Hope it helps and eliminates one more reason.
After couple days of testing .. it is confirmed. It may not be the main reason, but in my case it was.
I think it might be the reason, but most of the time I get around 30mA so I don't have the problem. But if it is helpful, I'm glad that a Bulgarian found the solution!

I did not want to delete them, so i zipped them with ES explorer .... had a bit more than 3000 files.
???
can you explain how?!!
Where is the location of the icons, by the way.
I am glad a Bulgarian is posting possible solution.

I'm not sure I understand how zipping up icons would save battery life. Except maybe you zipped up the programs themselves? If you did that, then how do you look at your pictures?
Sounds like the gallery was constantly indexing pictures he didn't need indexed. So he put those pictures in a zip, which obviously wouldn't get indexed. Simples. Unless I misunderstood your misunderstanding?
WoW i love the last line ...

This is the idea .... it is obviuos that if you delete or zip the files, you cannot view them anymore ..... but how often you are looking at icons in the gallery?

Not slower .... drains the battery more. I have now about 200 pictures shot with the camera and it is ok without the icons (a bit more than 3000 files).
last couple of hours, everytime i wake up the phone, got 9-11 mA, before cleaning the icons i never got below 70-80 mA.
I kindly ask someone else to try it
typo lolololol
If your asking others to test and verify your theory why is the thread labeled SOLVED?
There are so many reasons for battery drain. One minute you can have a high battery drain and the next a low one. Just like everyone that runs these speed tests. They are so inaccurate its not even funny. There are way too many factors that affect both issues that I do not ever think they will be solved. There are steps you can take to make them better but never solve them.
I am 200% agree with you!!
This is not solve, it is discuses!!!
I draw 3-6ma in standby without doing anything other than booting Android.
Discuss.
i last 2 days on my build (v1.5) with normal use....
for the upcoming 1.6 i have o check the drain still but it lasts me a full day with juice to spare.
man I came running to this thread thinking this was a genuine fix. no worries. I am at a consistent 50-60 mA at rest. The only time it goes down to below 5 is when it is charging. I have used hastrain 7.7 and now 8.1. Nothing is getting me down to below 10 yet with this build.

No, do worry. 50-60mA in standby is NOT good.
Yo, too many reasons for battery drain... kernel, build, application run in background, display, and more and more.. For me, when a build drain my battery too fast, i try to canging kernel, for example, with mdeejay froyo rev in stand by with mdeejay kernel i got 60-100mha...with hastarin 7.8, 4-8 mha.
Byez.

I got the Google Ion build (WOW it's fast!). I absolutely love it! (Sorta miss having that manila digital clock though), the market has so many free apps I love just sitting there for hours on end flicking threw and seeing what I can get!
But my Battery life is horrible . I deleted my gmail account from the email app, as it checked for new mail far too often.
As I'm a total Android noob I don't know how to limit the data transferred, or how to close apps, or any other battery saving tips

yeah the battery life on all of the android builds for the vogue are absolutely horrid compared to winmo, not sure why though?
make sure gps is turned off and maybe buy an extended battery?
Turn off background data or turn off always on data. You compair to windows mobile but in windows mobile I always have to reconnect when I check email or browse the web. And turn down screen brightness and make sure you power settings are correct in your default.txt. it's all about usage too. I'm sure by playing around with android you are actually using your phone and data more than in windows mobile simply by downloading market appsand using them.
I've actually been surprised, with the most recent Android xROM, I'm getting significantly better battery life than with WM, and of course far better than early Android. I keep GPS off and brightness at 60% almost always, but still, my battery seems to last around 20 hours with light use, and probably 12-14 with average use. I know the battery meter can't be off, since I've actually used the phone during those time ranges.
Edit: Oh, also taskiller (on the market and in a bunch of these builds) works great to kill apps you aren't using.
Try one of the new zimage's by dzo - he's done quite a bit of optimization and it makes a huge difference.

LOL!! Np - I found that combo to work very well for me. Mind u, its hard to compare to winmo because android is so usable that i'm on it all the time..
I completely agree. When android for vouge was first developing with the "ion" build It was kinda unstable, slow, and had clunky controls. Recently I have tried the latest Ion buld and i LOVE IT!!!! IT is extremely usable and I love the ability to download apps from the marketplace. The only downside was battery life, so as I speak I am replacing the files you linked to and am going to post my results on battery life after a day of use.

Make sure your power collapse suspend settings are correct in your default.txt. I get at least 16-18 hours out of my vogue on light to moderate usage. I ran my latest build with sense ui from 3am until around 3pm today with about 20% charge remaining. Thats with using data on and off most of the day and gps turned on for about an hour close to the end of the day. If your worried about battery life then turn off data when not in use or at least turn off background data. And turn your screen brightness down low. And make sure your battery is fully charged.
I have the strangest problem with these files. Every day at 12:00AM in the morning my phone reboots back into Windows Mobile. I'm not really sure why
So I found this great app that tells me how much life I have left on my battery. I find that with my phone I can hardly go pass 16 hours with MODERATE use yet everyone here is bragging about easily passing 30hrs with HEAVY use. So I'm asking you guys, to please, download this app called BatteryTime Lite and post your pics or info here. Lets compare the results. Remember to set the level to 100% as shown in my pic below..

Thats what I herd too..thats why I'm also calling google a lier about saying this thing lasts 20hours with audio playback.
I'm curious, do they see a big improvement in battery when the display using 15-20% battery or its just numbers that were out a place to begin with?
I have identical figures. That combined with picking the N1 from a list says to me that these are just database figures rather than real world ones for your handset.
Root your phone and then install cyanogenmod and one of the under volted kernels. I usually get 24 - 30 hours battery life.
I just ran a test. I left the mp3 player on all night turn all the way on repeat. SO far after 8hrs of playing I was at 52%. If I'm correct, I just might be able to hit 18hrs...MMMM

Ok after 100% charge..the app is telling me that my phone will last 10hr:48min with moderate use....anyone thinking that the F on my P/N might mean battery sucker..
i have the exact same numbers as you. if you choose other instead of the phone type it asks you to enter your battery's info so it sounds like it only goes by the type of battery anyway. Not actual usage specific to your phone
My phone ends in an F as well. My battery life SUCKS right now. I have tried everything. The weird thing is it was good until I rooted my phone and applied Cyanogen rom. I've tried .2 and .3 for the Cyan rom's, all with bad battery life. I've tried wiping batterystats, fulling draining battery then recharging, task killer to wipe anything in the background, I even have a 2nd battery. No luck. I've also tried the undervolted kernal, but I didn't really notice a difference with it. (Only tried it for about a day so)
Bottom line though, something is going on. Something (I suspect with Cyan's roms) is killing battery life for some of us. I just wish I could figure out what it is.

Any chance you're using Weatherbug or Weatherbug elite (based on your SS)? After installing weatherbug and using the widget I got absolutely ABYSMAL battery life. I've purchased several other weather widgets and none had the effect that Weatherbug did for some reason. I removed it and battery life is back to normal again (moderate use and plenty of battery at the end of the day).

How long your battery lasts definitely depends on the apps youre using, I use my phone a lot, probably more than the average user, although i dont make many calls. My phone will easily last from when I leave my house around 530am till 11pm or so when I go to bed. I do use a task manager to kill stuff I dont need running every once in a while, I think it really just depends on how you use it. I use it for a lot of texting, surfing and news, and Pandora at work. I use wifi when im at home although ive never noticed it eating my battery. Yesterday I was playing Pandora over bluetooth on 3G for a little over 3 hours and it only took 5% of my battery. Im on Cyanogen 5.0.5.3, if that matters. With all that said I rarely go all day without charging it, I usually plug it in a bit at work and plug it in when I get home, but if I dont for whatever reason it easily lasts my whole day.
So I unplugged at 7am this morning, and now 5 hours later, I have 29% left.
I took 1 picture, read about 7 emails.

make sure you calibrated your battery and also make sure your phone is going to sleep and doesn't have 100% wake time. the hero has much better battery life than the evo.
I have e noticed a few differences with 2.2.1 some of which are good others that take away functionality. Two in particular are that now the ZIP code field accepts Alpha-Numerics and not just numbers but on the minus side that 'Keep screen on when plugged in' has been lost from Developer options. Well I found a work around for this by installing Widgetoid which has the ability to not only keep it on when plugged in but when unplugged also and as a bonus I do not have to dig down though menus.
So do you know of any pluses or minuses and work-arounds for them to share with others here?

This must be down to setup or apps installed as there are many like myself who do not have this problem. 30 gone and still 45% battery life showing. JPY updated through Kies from JPO using reg. Perhaps a thread with a poll for those with the problem with did you update via kies or odin and have you used other roms or was it from stock type of questions. narrow the field down a bit to find the true cause.
Well, all I did was upgrade via Kies. No hacks, no changes to settings etc. and with wifi on all the time, the battery drain is terrible compared to JPO 2.2, which was really pretty good.
I had this problem the first night, left wifi on, since then I always switch wifi off when not needed, and battery last 2 or 3 days...

With respect, the title of this thread appears to invite input on the "pluses or minuses" of 2.2.1
The only minus I have come across is dire battery performance when compared to 2.2 JPO, with no other settings touched. To me, that is a major minus.

The clue is in the first post an example is given there. Another example would be when we lost the Sound: On, Silent, Silent vibrate options and were IIRC left with Sound on or vibrate but no silent. I used Silentmode OnOff widget to get around that one.

The most biggest plus is the SPEED. My Galaxy S has never fly so fast without lag fix, or WITH lag fix with any other firmwares (2.1 or 2.2) as it is now. So who care about a little battery drain? And like it said, as long as you remember to swtich off the wifi when you don't use it, everything is fine.

Where do you find 'widgetoid' - I can't find it in Market (not in the UK anyway)
Hi there
I just like to share my experience with battery drain in both JVK and JVB and give you a possible fix.
I experienced battery drain both in jvk and jvb and when you go setting - battery check, I would see high android OS - up to 60 percent which just drank the juice out of my phone.
I've decided to test all the apps, deleting one by one in order to locate which app was causing this problem and I found it to be "software update".
So here is a possible fix for you guys who are experiencing similar problem.
Go to setting - manage apps - all apps - find software update - delete data
In both JVK and JVB it solved my battery drain problem almost instanly.
I also did battery recalibration but doubt it played any part.
I hope above method will solve the battery drain problem.
P.S
does anyone know what exactly software update does?
and how to delete it completely off the phone.
I doubt I will be using OTA update or anything like that since I'm a big fan of odin.
Cheers
thanks man.
i'm checking it out, i really hope this solution works!
this is my second night in a row, where im going to sleep with exactly 89 percent battery and when i got up i saw the phone is at 8 percent.
made me so pissed i wanted to go back to my sony-erricsson from 2005

Hmm, this "fix" was kinda known a long time ago? (you can see it even in the thread called something with Android OS and few more) http://goo.gl/Hpc5a . And I think its the OTA update which does nothing currently. Hmm, am confused about your question. You ask what it does then you say you wont need it anyway .
And for example freeze it with titanium backup? Now when click the option it does nothing (no fc and phone works normally)

Yea just found out that this fix was known a long time ago.
Well, I hope this helps some people anyway..
anyone know how to delete this software update apk??
Do you read what I wrote? The same way you can freeze it, you can delete it... Best with titanium backup, should be foolproof enough. Do a backup before etc.
Deleted the data and also the apk! Nothing changed

Ok but is your Android OS usage high? like 40-60 percent? Or something else is high?

So you are wrong here . This thread is like the other ones for the ppl with high Android OS usage. 9 percent is ok.
Well if display is 61 , how many hours on? And what else is there? More data we need.
When I was on JVK, I was able to fix the android OS problem but had another one where after playing a graphically intense game, the CPU would not ramp back down when the phone went to sleep. That was draining the battery a lot for me and the only way to fix it was to reboot the phone. I'm back on 2.2.1
Disabling software update seems to not work for me also, im using stock Ginger (latest version - probably final) and after 1-2 days after flash Android os is taking 70% of battery :/
Looks like software update isnt the issue.

I lost the data about it, but i have the screens about the test i made yesterday and the one i made today morning. Yesterday it was for the most time in standby with data off , and today i tried to leave it 3h in standby without touch it.
I lost 10% !! in 3h !! WITHOUT DATA! is really too much! With the 2.2.1 i used to lost 1% every 2-3 hours! ! And as you can see in the first day , in the last part i tried to use it (ONLY FOR READ A MANGA , so only img on the sd and i had the brightness to 20% ) O_O !
Help me :-/

That's bad ! I think i'll go back on a 2.2.1 untill the samsung release the kernel source :-/
I think an iphone is better , i can't have a working phone! I bought this phone because i love android!! I hate iOS but.. what the hell?!?! I have every day to stay hours & hours to search and try new roms or kernel in serching to find something with that i can use this PHONE like a PHONE ; and don't see a lag every 2seconds! The hardware of this phone is good! (really good!) But why the hell it doesn't work good? Now i finally found a rom (juwe's) that work really good ! But if i put the phone on the battery die! Also on the OFFICIAL (AN OFFICIAL? why official roms have bugs?!?!?!) i have battery drain problem!
And also the problem of the browser! It work really good on the 2.2.1 , and now on ginger it have a bug on the scroll! :-/
That's really bad! I hope samsung 'll do a great work on the sgs2 or that monster 'll not be exlpoit

Grrr. That rom has like 2 bugs and 1 of them is fixed. Second one forgot...

What is the fixed bug? I have the battery drain bug and the browser bug? And no one of them are fixed :-|
The bugfix worked in my case!
I charged my phone to 100% in the forenoon (~11:00am) and I only had 21% left at 7:20 pm.
Now it's 11:30 pm and I still have 20% after I removed the data of the OTA-Update app.
nice regards
