I have e noticed a few differences with 2.2.1 some of which are good others that take away functionality. Two in particular are that now the ZIP code field accepts Alpha-Numerics and not just numbers but on the minus side that 'Keep screen on when plugged in' has been lost from Developer options. Well I found a work around for this by installing Widgetoid which has the ability to not only keep it on when plugged in but when unplugged also and as a bonus I do not have to dig down though menus.
So do you know of any pluses or minuses and work-arounds for them to share with others here?
Personally, I've only seen pluses with the new rom.

Soon you'll notice a big big big con, huge battery drain....
Here on the General section is a thread about battery draining and possible solutions, on android dev section someone posted a "fix", haven't tried yet, but here it is FYI:

It seems there are a few lucky ones not getting heavy battery draining, hope you guys don't need this.

I am amongst the unlucky ones facing a huge battery drain. I've mostly solved the 'standby' drain but 'usage' drain is still incredible. It's a shame really, because the 2.2.1 updates are brilliant in all other respects.

This must be down to setup or apps installed as there are many like myself who do not have this problem. 30 gone and still 45% battery life showing. JPY updated through Kies from JPO using reg. Perhaps a thread with a poll for those with the problem with did you update via kies or odin and have you used other roms or was it from stock type of questions. narrow the field down a bit to find the true cause.
Well, all I did was upgrade via Kies. No hacks, no changes to settings etc. and with wifi on all the time, the battery drain is terrible compared to JPO 2.2, which was really pretty good.
I had this problem the first night, left wifi on, since then I always switch wifi off when not needed, and battery last 2 or 3 days...

+1 for the battery drain with 2.2.1.
I'm please to say that I have solved it though... I did a full factory reset and flashed back to 2.2

Confirm! It's working. I've solved it for myself the same way....
I repeat, no battery problem with 2.2.1 JPY, as long as I dont leave wifi on...
Please note this is not a battery problems thread. that one is elsewhere on the forum. This one is looking at improvements/additions with JPY and good things that have been removed and how to get them back. Than you.

With respect, the title of this thread appears to invite input on the "pluses or minuses" of 2.2.1
The only minus I have come across is dire battery performance when compared to 2.2 JPO, with no other settings touched. To me, that is a major minus.

The clue is in the first post an example is given there. Another example would be when we lost the Sound: On, Silent, Silent vibrate options and were IIRC left with Sound on or vibrate but no silent. I used Silentmode OnOff widget to get around that one.
gray squares when scroling pages on the net
The most biggest plus is the SPEED. My Galaxy S has never fly so fast without lag fix, or WITH lag fix with any other firmwares (2.1 or 2.2) as it is now. So who care about a little battery drain? And like it said, as long as you remember to swtich off the wifi when you don't use it, everything is fine.

Same thing happens on the iphone, if its good enough for steve jobs its good enough for us.

I upgraded to the Sprint stock 2.1 update a few days ago. My battery sucks ass, and the whole thing is just slow. My battery lasts maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a day and anytime I make or take a call or msg/email, the phone freezes for a few seconds at a time.
I've looked on here for answers, but it's all scattered and I can't find much that directly addresses it.
Any and all help would be useful. I'm sure rooting and trying something better would be better, but the stock working without issues would be nice. Thanks.
Rooting is out of the question for you since you upgraded stock 2.1 As far as the battery is concerned you should be able to access your battery stats in Settings>About phone> Battery > Battery use. Of course, you should check the battery use after a days use, so basically charge it to full and let it run down then check the stats on the battery and find out what is using it.
The post the results here and we can assist you further.
I think you will see the google maps issue. I looked and found that it was using 91%. I wish I could adb and pull it out...lol
btw I was quite aware of the impact installing the update.
dont worry, the 2.1 stock rom is like a red headed step child, eventually its going to get beaten so dont worry you will be Adb'ing tons of stuff out in the future lol.
So any reasons as to why it runs slow. Is anyone else having this problem?
I have stock/official 2.1 on mine....and mine works faster actually...my messaging client is wicked fast than in 1.5 .....browsing is faster too...overall the lag level is gone down for me.....
Oh and reg battery...I improved my battery by disabling "always on mobile network connection"...that helped the battery a lil bit...
I easily get a day out of my battery...
You should try to reflash and see if it gets better..

Ditto, I dont know if Im a big fan of this update ..
WOW, i have the leaked 2.1 from fresh on my hero and i have no lag and great battery life. Try another radio as i found the new stock one to be pretty bad.
I updated my girlfriend's Hero to 2.1 a few days ago, and she has been less than thrilled with how it is performing and wishes she could go back to 1.5.
She says the battery seems to drain faster, and she has been having issues with the browser (having trouble selecting text boxes because it takes two taps now due to zoom in, regular freeze ups). The messaging icon also keeps reporting that she has one message, only for her to click on it and have nothing.
One thing that hopefully will help though was turning off Latitude. She was just nosing around in Maps one day and activated it but couldn't find where to kill it. Google awkwardly buried the setting to turn it off completely under the "privacy" menu (the forth option).
What's bad is that I tried to save her the trouble of dealing with ROMs and roots and spared her Hero from my experimenting, but so far the official 2.1 seems to have as many issues as a buggy ROM would. It's very frustrating.
I posted this on another forum... and got some positive feedback.
The update just miraculously increased my battery life tenfold!
I am 7 hours 12 minutes in and I am at 80% (using the battery indicator provided in settings, not by battery widget). I unrooted to install the update (yet it feels like I still have Herver's ROM). Brightness at 50%.
I didn't use the phone that much today (I had class), but I used it inbetween breaks and whatnot. I guess pretty light usage.
I think the update messed with the radio/wifi performance.
What about you guys?
Edit: I know people have gotten 20+ hours with ROMS, but this is without one.
Hopefully ROMS increase the battery life even more.

Hi patelkedar,
I can't speak for everyone, but according to myself and other users that have responded to my post battery life improvement has been absolutely astounding as of this update.
Blah. Sorry for double thread.
Search didn't go so well I guess.
Anyway, seems like everyone has seen major improvement.
Totally agree. My battery life has improved vastly. I came from fresh 0.3 and EvolutionX. I had excellent battery life with both of those roms too. But I unrooted to give htc a shot at stock again and I am happy. Phone has been off charger since 7:30am and it's now 3:05pm, with moderate usage and on wifi i'm at 78%. I don't know what I would do without my EVO. I love this damn device.
My battery life is phenomenal with the stock update. I was one of the ones who took the plunge and lost the ability to root for the time being but its performing so well I really don't care. They made everything run better and the battery was just a bonus.
unevoked not working after 1.4xxx update
I uninstalled the superpermissions and unrevoked before updating. now it will not root obviously. tried to install setcpu and various other programs but will not work. this sucks.. i see no difference in battery life or speed....a lot of people think an update is a good thing sometimes, but it is not. HTC should just release froyo 2.2
Pretty much if you have alot of Facebook friends the battery life savings will be huge with this update, also if you use a Flickr account battery savings will be huge, it seems they fixed the issue with Flickr causing 100% awake time as well but didn't mention it...crossing my fingers anyway, so far haven't run into the issue after resetting up my Flickr Account.
P.S. The update seems very much worth losing root for now as it seems to have fixed many things not metnioned and some functions are way faster now, going to manage applications loads in 2-3 seconds now versus 10-20 before etc... There seem to be alot of fixes not mentioned.
You guys mind posting your settings?
I'm at 9 hours and 40 minutes with exactly 50% battery remaining, but I haven't been using the phone like crazy. Some light web use and decent amount of texting all throughout the day. This is not an improvement from the pre-update era. Pretty much the same

Phone also all around seems smoother in the sense UI especially. I'm enjoying my EVO again and actually using it as a cell phone now instead of a super-rapid-fire-rom-flashing addiction-device. Sometimes I forget that my cell phone is a cell phone and not a netbook (yet) lol. Cheers to HTC for the update!

A large portion of the battery drain issue has been taken care of. I'm not at 100% usage. However, over the past hour it has shown a pretty large partial wake usage in Spare Parts.

edit: My phone isn't 100% awake anymore with this.
Even the updated version ate battery too much to be acceptable for me.
Blew through the battery in about 6 hours with pretty light use.
Hopefully it gets worked on.
I'm changing roms and will try it again soon after I finish customizing everything on my end.

Ditto. It will sleep sometimes but it will still do partial wakes even with the screen off. Its almost as if the app is trying to communicate with an outside source even when not in use. I unistalled it and phone sleeps 100%. Shame, it's a great program but it's terrible on battery life.
im not seeing any improvement at all, my 3000mah battery dropped to 70% in 25min, im going to try a fresh install of tango and see if that helps but as far as i can see, the phone says its still awake, just looked at permissions, why does it need gps? anyways just reinstalled, going to see how battery holds up
-alright its been about a half hour and the battery seems to be holding up, listening to music, running hotspot, and tango is running in background waiting for calls, before when i only updated, i didnt have music running, didnt have hotspot, phone was idle but reinstalling seems to have helped
Eh mixed views, not sure yet...

No gps on, no 3rd party apps, no bt on. I just re flashed and my battery was charged to 100% and it dropped to 80% while phone was on idle. What kernel

I think the notification led is an issue with z roms, when I've flashed them in the past I use the app blink to get it working again.

I also am having very fast battery drain. I dropped brightness to 50% and I tihnk I have had GPS going all the time. I will fix that now. I also want to know should I be using Version 3.0 >>>> Download or Version 2.2 >> Download
I know that sounds like a dumb question but as far as dates go it looks like 2.2 is the latest.
It "doesn't matter" which version you use depending on what you want as both are essentially the same minus a few, subtle differences. Nils provides several battery saving tips in the first page of both roms.
Nils Business Gingersense 3.0 v2.2 is based on Sense 3.0 thus it is more resource heavy. I personally use this rom and notice more battery life (as with any rom I use) when I don't use 3g. Not everyone is in my situation but I'm a grad student and I spend a good chunk of time at home so I primarily use wifi and extend battery life.
Nils Business Gingersense 2.1/3.0 v3.0 is a mix of Sense 2.1 and Sense 3.0. It may be more toward you're liking if you can deal without several Sense 3.0 elements like widgets and rotating home screen.
What is it you do when you notice poor battery life? Also, ate you comparing your battery life to an AOSP rom?
Since I can't post in the dev thread yet....
I've had the ROM for a couple weeks with few issues. I am noticing problems with the camera saving pictures. Sometimes it's fine, other times the images don't show up for several minutes, then today, several never showed up in the gallery. Just looking through the gallery, sometimes older pictures show an error, or on some occasions, duplicate. The image never sharpens on zoom as it used to either. Tried a reboot and fixing permissions to no avail. Is there a known issue with the gallery in GB or with Sense 3 on these phones?

Big fan here, NilsP. Thank you!
Regarding battery life, I've been running this ROM for a couple of weeks and am getting good battery life, but I spend most of the day on WiFi (WiFi sleep policy = Never). I use the kernel included in the ROM and the stock radio.
Go in Settings > About Phone > Battery > Battery Use, then click on the battery graph. Check the line at the bottom that says Awake and compare it to Screen On. Your phone should not be awake constantly when the screen is off. If it is, then something is preventing your phone from sleeping. You can use an app like System Panel to monitor apps and figure out which is the culprit. This has helped me identify battery-hogging apps.
After flashing from 2.2 to 2.3 my available memory has gone from 130 to about 80 something. I don't know what i'm doing wrong here. Also I don't have anatase as an option in setcpu. any help errors be greatly appreciated. I love the ROM and can't wait to see 3.5.

I think the fast battery drain is not really the battery draining that fast. When I flashed this ROM, I had to wipe the battery stats and it slowed the drain amount down. At 1st I was losing like 10% every 10 minutes till I hit about 40% then it would hang there for most of the day. after wiping the stats it's a more accurate slow drain.

Hope this helps, if this is not the problem then it's because I suck, but it did help my situation.
I hate to make a thread like this, but it seems that this is kinda of those "everyone already knows this" or similar question that does not get brought up.
Anyway:
I decided to revert from genokolar's CM7 to stock Froyo firmware (functionality and hopefully battery life reasons, just one was enough of reason)
I found a update firmware in huawei's site for 2.2.2 Froyo, it was two apps in dload folder I had to boot into volume up+down+power boot mode, prior to this I had wiped EVERYTHING I could in clockworkmod, and after the update and few reboots, the system seems to be in working order. Even my recovery image is replaced with stock one now.
I know the CM7 port in question had some kernel modifications - especially ones affecting to CPU clocks, that in hand may be stuff affecting battery in negative way, and also imposing possible problems with stock system - does the stock 2.2.2 update also write in the stock kernel? If yes, thank you, I will be relieved. if not, then I need to figure some back plan.
P.s. waiting official gingerbread as is everyone else. Bug reports from many people about the official beta was one reason I went to stock froyo for now.
Thanks!
Yes it does. Or it has for me.
If I understand you correctly, you got worse battery-life with CM7 than you had with stock firmware?
I nearly doubled the battery-life going from stock f/w to oxygen, right now on MIUI and on my second day without charging

Well, It is combination of functional issues, general feel that the system may not work like intended, and to experiment will the battery life increase. Generally I looked the ROM selection for while but there seemed to be quite wide array of bug reports for each what I did not want to buy into. Unless there is some widely accepted strong recommendation for system - thanks for the input though.
Battery life can have a huge difference between phones. Also how much you use it has effect. I have better battery life in stock too i have used all rom except the new ics ones.

Yeah, from tests I hear if something, battery life in Hussein is quite great, at least in stock manner.
And my first problem basically was first night after installing CM7 and leaving phone, screen off idle, not charging, and during that 6 or so hours of idle, with wifi and connections turned off, my battery had been drained to half when I woke up and checked the clock.
Thanks tho. Not to say the ROM development are bad, opposite, they bring what people want, and already done better work at customized gingerbread builds for this device than Hussein with their betas. To me the battery life just is more crucial than the features of both 2.3 and the customized ROM.
also, thanks.
