I've recently bought a HTC desire HD and I'm really dissapointed with the vodaphone branding basically forced upon it. I was looking to install a stock rom of sorts to the device and was wondering if someone could give me a quick link to the guides and order that i'd have to do stuff in.
As I understand it I need to root (not sure if I have to permenantly do so) my phone, and then flash with a stock rom. I'm having a hard time finding a stock rom and also information on whether installing this stock rom would allow me to automatically update, would there be any differences to buying a stock HTC desire HD from a shop.
The rom currently installed is the one for the AU vodaphone Desire HD
Just after the equivalent unbranded one, and any additional steps required to remove the vodaphone filth.
I didn't think Vodafone were branding them quite yet. I got mine from Vodafone UK a few weeks ago and I've got zero branding at all on it.
agreed I have no branding either and I have had 3 DHD's. I was also assured by a VF staff member that all DHD come directly from HTC sealed and VF do not open the box ever before sending out to its customers.
Managed to sort this out, yeah the aussie ones seem to come loaded with rubbish that's unremovable >.<
I ended up loading one of the UK WWE roms and it's working fine now
For anyone curious and new to the process like I was.. I used the perma root method using VISIONary and then I simply ran the setup file of the rom on my PC and it did all the work. Took a little working out but was suprisingly simple.
IF your device isnt rooted then you won't be able to install the rom, it will come up with a user error (somthing along the lines of wrong user id)
What "rubbish" ? Amazon MP3 ? QuickOffice ? SoundHound ? Facebook ? Twitter ? Peep ? That is "HTC rubbish", not "Vodafone rubbish" .

Do you really hav to root the phone do debrand it? Previous devices, such as my Desire, only required a Goldcard present to allow flashing any of the HTC Roms.

A "Games" app - really a link that leads to a crappy Vodfone Australia website
A "Music" app - as above
A "News" app - as above
A "Sport" app - as above
A "Vodafone" app - as above
Would be nice to remove them and reclaim those names in the app drawer.
I might look for the UK rom myself.

Yeah I did try using a Goldcard but it didn't work for me, may have been user error not quite sure.
As for the "rubbish" apps, just the weblinks that link to the main vodaphone site and a boot logo that's rather slow (atleast it felt like it was slowing startup down).
The HTC stuff is fine, I can live with that.. but broken voda links were driving me nuts!
Over and above the links and apps, Vodafone has also put in a splash screen on boot (which I think actually slows down the overall boot process by a few seconds). I'm very keen on flashing a new ROM but I'm worried by warranty issues since there doesn't appear to be any Australian Vodafone ROMs available as of yet...
Any tips on what else can be done? Are we able to create a backup of the current ROM somehow?
EDIT: I just read through another thread and noticed the boot animation can be altered. I used root explorer to navigate to the directory
'system\customize\resources' and found the Vodafone boot. Unfortunately Root explorer isn't letting me edit that file as it is 'read-only'. I have perm-rooted my phone and granted SuperUser access...

So you flashed using a stock WWE? Which version? Also, were you able to get the OTA update OK?
I flashed mine using a Goldcard recently, and all worked fine, but the OTA has appeared to break my wifi.
Also, i can also back this guy up, Vodafone AU brand the HTC Desire HD's.

I just did this with my Three branded ROM using Root Explorer, in /system/customize/resource/ there was a HUTCH_bootanimation.zip and a bootanimation.zip
I just clicked the Mount R/W button up in the top right hand corner and renamed the bootanimation.zip to HUTCH_bootanimation.zip
Should be similar on Vodafone
You can also unzip play with the logo and rezip then move it to the sdcard and with Root Explorer put it back in /system/customize/resource/
I would like to know which file points to HUTCH_bootanimation.zip (or whatever) as the boot animation zip and be able to just change that instead
thanks for this, im getting a vodafone branded one tommorow and they are putting firmware on it with all the crap vodafone 360 etc. which no one wants or cares about,

I had one of these, rooted it and installed LeeDROID 1.2
Now it is mine and no Vodafone influence
Just be wary or removing ANY old app when you do root, some may have dependencies, some cooks say it is better to freeze an app rather than delete just in case.

So I've caved in to temptation and rooted my Magic. Now I'm looking for a suitable ROM - I've been into the Sapphire wiki and looked at the ones listed in there but they don't really explain what is on the ROMs.
What I am looking for is a ROM that contains Exchange sync, multitouch and browser with Flash, and most importantly - stability!
Also a few more questions - can I use the Android market if I have a custom ROM? I ask because in the ROM discussions I've noticed a lot talking about adding and removing software using the adb tool. Are there any other pitfalls I should be aware of, seeing as this my first time applying a new ROM.
TIA
Firstly what version of the magic do you have, 32A or 32B.
It's best to check out the rom development section and read what each rom is about there.
And yes you can still use the android market, the icon is still in all the custom roms.
Mine is the 32B - UK Vodefone.
The problem is the threads for those ROMs are sometimes more than 100 pages long with little or no descriptions about what is contained on them ... unless I am missing something
Well the ROMs will always be updated on the very first page, there's usually some kind of description as well of what is and whats not included.
As with all these things it's best to try each one out for yourself and see what you do and don't like.
As long as you use nandroid to backup your phone then you can always go back to the rom you were using before you falashed a new one.
I've tried installing Fatal1ty's 32B ROM from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=531617
(Fatal1ty-Hero-Full-v1-4-zip)
Rename it in update.zip
copy to sd
reboot (pressing home+power)
wipe
apply update
Click to collapse
It said the update.zip was bad ...? Thank god for the nandroid backup (cheers for the advice on that one), I was restored and working again straight away on my old config ... but what went wrong? From doing a bit more reading, is it because the ROM isn't signed? Or should I just download the file again and try again - perhaps it corrupted somewhere along the way?
Can you provide the exact error you got?

I've been caught out with something like this before - make sure the zip you are downloading is the actuall update zip! Open it and check it only has the 3 folders and boot.img in it.
The update.zip maybe in the zip you have downloaded
But on a side note - the Hero Roms aren't suitable (yet) for the 32B's as the RAM is too small - wait until they cut it down a bit.
I would recommened either Nk2 or CyanogenMod [v3.6.8] && Palm Pre theme [1.5] ported
The second being the fastest i've used (rapid infact)
Cheers - I tried downloading the rom again and this time used adb push to copy and rename it to the sd card, tried again and it worked.
I agree with what you're saying about the hero rom needing some work though. I can't use touchflo or the weather app as they are too slow. Browser is also quite a lot slower than on the stock Voda UK firmware.
I really like HTC Peep and the facebook integration into my contacts, and the HTC keyboard is a lot better.
On your advice I'll give the CyanogenMod rom a try. I would like to find one good one and stick to it rather than become addicted to flashing the latest roms every week!
Hey just wondering if anyone has tried this Rom. RUU_Vision_HTC_WWE_1.22.405.1_Radio_12.26.60.1301_26.02
.00.24_M2_release_151197_signed.exe. It is a Rom upgrade utility

I didn't rename it. It is it's own update utility. You run it from a pc and it will go through and verify the information on your phone and then will update. Looks very simular to the Update utility used for flashing the HD2. But it is not able to verfiy the information on the phone.
rename it pc10img.zip, boot into fastboot, select bootloader. Tell me if it flashes.
Sent from my G2.
There are instructions elsewhere to do it but you will have to search for the .zip file that the ruu program extracts to a temp directory on your pc and rename that file before you put it on your sd card to try it out.
If I remember correctly renaming it update.zip works fine in both bootloader and recovery also.
Edit: should be named update.zip when you find it to begin with.
would it not effect radio in the U.S? i mean the desire Z and the G2 user same radios? same frequencies? just wondering. the reason it doesnt find your device when you are running the RUU is you might not have htc sync
and if you do have htc sync i got a feeling it needs the phone to be able to have that option, i.e. when you connect up a sense ui phone it gives you an option for htc sync. but no harm in trying to see if htc sync can recongise your phones, if so maybe a chance with a gold card to flash the RUU
i don't have a G2 so i can't try. i have the desire Hd and the desire Z comes next month
So far gold cards have done nothing for the g2 from what I have read (could have missed something) and if it is for the desire z it will not flash to the g2. They have tried it in another thread with no luck with and with out the gold card.

Hi @all,
as my thread was closed but i still want to thank you and share my experiences, i'll create this new thread.
It belongs to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=926835 but maybe also can help other guys to get root on theire updated unrooted phones.
this weekend i did the work and finaly i can say:
on my phone I AM root!!!
Just to thank you and maybe help some less experienced people here, i will give you a small overview and some hints for changes to be done for the tutorials to work with the desire z.
so thanks for your help, it worked like a charm.
For the backup i used myBackup as it doesnt require root for backing up and it restored my data as i wished. So myBackup is the product i can recomment. It is available as 30days-demo and so is enough for the process of down- and reupgrading.
Another thing to remind in the following steps is: at any time usb-debugging works with the htc-sync-mode, too. so use this mode, as usb-mode at any time, as in another case (harddisk-mode) the phone cant access the sdcard anymore.
After the backup i removed the card from the phone and worked on with a blank one.
The following both tutorials i used:
Goldcard: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=572683&highlight=gold+card
Down-Reupgrade: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting
You may also use this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832503
This one describes all the goldcard und down/upgrade-stuff explicitly for the desire z, but it looks a bit more hacky and seems to be good for people already experienced with hex-editors and rooting, also it doesnt mention, that the first 2 chars of the cardcode neet to be converted to "00", thats why i recommended the other tutorials.
I formated it to fat32 and put it into the phone, this step wasnt mentioned in the tutorial, so i tell it to all who dont know.
Then i read the card-ID with adb. Here is another problem with the tutorial. The DesireZ had no mmc1 with valid data, for the desire z you have to read the cid from mmc2!!! (just change the path from the tutorial) (so: adb shell cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc2/mmc2:*/cid)
After that remove the card from the phone and reinster into the cardreader and do the patching with the image and the hexeditor.
Then youre done with the first tutorial (in step 18) and can move on with the cyanogen one (as it seems more trustful )
So now reinsert into the phone and copy the firmwareimage and then "update" to the older version (was very nervouse while that, but succeeded finaly )
If you get an Error in "/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.33.405.5" (i got one like "unable to backup") you have not inserted the sdcard or used the filetransfermode, so the card is not mounted into the phones filesystem.
If so, switch to htc-sync-mode and try the command again.
When in the firmwareupgrade-mode after the reboot, you can navigate with vol-up and vol-down and enter with the powerkey.
After permroot install the rom of your chioce, best one with allready permroot done, that saves work
i decided for the virtuous as it has sense, any other/better rom someone can recomment???
When done that, too, at first reinsert the original sdcard with your backup on and restore that backup, as it overwrites existing data, it would be best to avoid any sms or calls to arrive before you restored the data, as those calls and messages will be lost.
After that you can set up all things you want and finaly you are done with a new 1.72 rooted and unbranded phone.
Thanks all for your help especially to guhl for giving me those links and taking the fear from me of bricking my phone....
Yours TK

I only use 1.34 because I haven't got round to trying anything else yet. But it works well enough not for me to want to get away from it as soon as possible. Virtuous is a popular Sense-based ROM, and I may well give that a try (it's based on 1.72 as well).
I use the 1.72 virtuous and feel good with it, as i have the impression that it is a bit smoother and the batteryusage seems to be a bit improved, but dunno if thats realy cuz of the new rom.
Only disadvantage, max volume doesnt seem to be bettered up, hope that gets solved soon
hoped to hear of any other rom with that solved and maybe packed with some nice gimmicks

Assalam aleikum,
Hi Iam using a german vodaphone 1.72 rom and want to downgrade to get permaroot and so on for a brother,
I Tried to get the downgrade working with this scripture but it dont works i ve done all the way down from goldcart with hexediting stuff and so on but when i reach the point to flash the 1.3 rom on hboot i get everytime a wrong cid error message and he wont install
is there a way to change the CID? for vodafone phones?
hi
i've been trying to downgrade my girlfriends new desire z (bought in a german store). but everytime i tried to flash the PC10IMG.zip in the bootloader via fastboot, it startet searching for it, found it, checked it and then brought up an error "incorrect CID", which i didn't quite understood. i checked the infocid and it's HTC__102, so i did not have to do the goldcard stuff. but i still did not get it working. solution was: not every PC10IMG.zip you can find in the various threads about downgrading the desire z seems to work, for me only the one found in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261 worked.
just wanted to let you know, in case anyone is searching for a solution for this problem
Hi folks, i'm looking for 2 days a way to solve my DHD problem:
It can't boot anymore. It pop up the "htc quietly brilliant" screen, play the boot sound and, start this step again, and again, and again...
So I'm googling a LOT about how to solve this, if exist a way to restore the original rom. Because i'm thinking that was the problem, my original rom is gone.
That happens when i try to install 3 softwares from appbrain, my device got freeze and i hit the power button to reset. So, after that, my device is gone.
So i came here, to ask you folks: There is a way to recover the original rom ? Without send to warranty (because it spend something like 1 month here).
I'm not a mobile hacker or something, i'm just trying to be happy with my device.
Thanks a lot and sorry for my poor english!!
Perhaps try booting to the bootloader, by holding Power + Volume down button. From there, you should be able to do a factory reset, which may or may not fix your problem. Worth a shot at least, imo
And if it does not work when you do a factory reset, you can use a rom.zip from HTC RUU to restore your phone.
Now the important thing is to know which HTC rom you are running. If it is unbranded, 1.72.405.3 is a sure shot. Download the RUU.exe from Stock roms thread in android development subforum, and run it. When the window pops up, open run prompt, and type: "%TEMP%". Then search for rom.zip, copy it to your desktop, rename it to PD98IMG.zip and put it to your SD card (I hope that you have a card reader). Then just reboot to bootloader as tmh described, and watch the magic happen
Then if your phone is branded, you can still use the same technique to make PD98IMG.zip, but you have to get the RUU that matches your branding. There are lots of RUUs in android development subforum, just search.
Hi guys,
thanks a lot for quik reply!
I perform the procedure indicated by tmh, but without lucky ;\
I think it is unbranded. I buy it at Portugal and i'm using at Brazil right now.
I'll perform your tip jkoljo.
I'll post a repply to let people know if it works or not.
Thanks a lot!!
Hope the advice the last guy gave helps , a factory re set may work fine and fix the issue. Iv had 3 dhd since the day of release , the second one I had wouldn't switch on, had it replaced by Vodafone . Not sure weather or not they will give you a new one . Hope u get it fixed

Sorry ask for your help again, but at Official thread (thread number 841207) for DHD files, both 1.72.405.3 links are broken.
So i search for another thread, and found another one, but when i run the .exe, it ask for a USB connection to device, so it appears wrong.
Could you gimme a hand to find the correct file?
PS: I can help with a web hosting to all correct files.
You probably found the correct RUU, now proceed to %TEMP% and copy rom.zip to desktop.
You can find RUUs here: http://xdafil.es/index.php?path=DesireHD/RUU/
I am not completely sure if those zip files are actual rom.zips, you can check that. Open up the zip, and if it has a long list of hboot, system, android-info.txt etc, then it is rom.zip and you can just go ahead and rename it to PD98IMG.zip.

You probably found the correct RUU, now proceed to %TEMP% and copy rom.zip to desktop.
You can find RUUs here: ...

But i did that.
The "1.72.405.3" files at this URL are broken (Or need password to access it, because "You don't have permission to access" message pop up).
When i run the RRU i got two screens, first i must accept a advice, the second one ask if I have a USB connection to my device. Even when i proceed to next step, i got no .zip file on my %TEMP%.
Im lost because of that lol
UPDATE: OK I FOUND IT! haha ty
Thanks a lot my friends,
but it doesn't work.
I perform the process for 2 different roms, and it doesn't work.
Still can't boot.
I'll sent for warranty and wait a loooong time..
But thanks a lot for help me with this!!
Ok, then there is something wrong in the device itself. You have to send it to a service center.

Hi again,
i keep a little hope that i can restore my phone, so i found a possible solution:
OTA update.
At "showthread.php?t=667728&page=2", i found a guy with the same problem i think, here is the quote:
Kinma said:
I had the same problem last week.
I suspected it had to do with the EXT3 partition.
Solved it by first flashing the OTA 2.2 ROM (for rooted users) as this does not use the EXT3. Then used Rom manager to recreate the EXT3.
Now all ROMs that use the EXT3 run fine!

(thanks Kinma for the feedback)
So, i start a search for OTA update file here, and found at "showthread.php?t=885996".
But when i choose "Apply sdcard:update.zip", i got INVALID OPERATION.
Someone have a tip for me about this?
Thanks (its very sad, but i must keep hope).

You are welcome.
What happened was that after a reboot of the phone the phone started rebooting in the boot sequence, i.e. a boot loop.
I tried a lot of things and nothing worked.
Finally I suspected that the problem might be with the SD card. I had a backup, so I had no problem doing a factory reset.
Then I booted the phone without the SD card.
The phone booted fine.
That way I was certain that the problem was with the SD card.
I had 2 partitions on the SD card, an EXT3 part and the rest was a normal Fat part.
I could still read the card, so I made a backup of all the data on the card.
Then I reformatted the card using windows.
The phone booted fine with an empty, reformatted, SD card.
Since I use Apps 2 SD, I had to recreate the EXT3 partition.
If your rom does not use this, you do not have to do this.
After recreating the EXT partition, put back all files that I want on my SD card.
My advice would be to do a factory reset and after that boot the phone without the SD card.
If the phone boots, you know the problem is with the card.
Hope that helps; good luck!

Hi folks,
boot without the SD card, doesn't work =(
I'm really without luck with this.
I do:
- Factory reset
- Clear cache and userdata
- Boot without SD or/and SIM cards
- Reflash RUU WWE 1.72.405.3 Radio 26.04.02.17_M2
- Reflash RRU WWE 1.72.405.3 Radio 26.04.02.17_M2 SF
- erase all SD
One show was use OTA update.zip, but at this step i got "invalid operation"
SO, nothing works!
Well, it appears a lost battle =\
thanks folks for all help.
Yeah, there must be something wrong in your device itself, for example a motherboard fault. Send it back to HTC.

Hi,
I found the information extremely useful. Big Thanks
GRuti
ive been thinking lately what with the larger amounts of threads with people asking for simlock (network lock) removal why cant we yet? we have s-off and root.
ive been looking into how the sensation does it and one method is that on a file on the phone the unlock code is just sitting there waiting to be found! and i dont really know how the other one works, it involves flashing a pg58diag.zip and it seems to remove the sim lock like a xtc clip would.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232107&highlight=xtc+clip
feel free to correct me if im wrong on this but this makes it look easy. even if we cant find the code surly one of us can make a flashable zip to delete the simlock rules like the xtc clip does!
now ive already looked for the *holy file* with the simlock removal code and its not in the wildfire build (from what i can tell, i dont know if you would need to be on stock firmware or not) but with enough patience maby we could find it. i tried to gett root explorer to scan all the files on my internal memory for my imei code but the app just crashed so i may have to look manually, even then it might be kept in with the hboot, or the radio. who knows my point is that surly one of us can crack it? i will try my best and any help would be appreciated
thoughts anyone?
Good idea that, I've started looking too with root explorer to see if I can find my imei with a code above, according to that guide its in mmcblkop6 which doesn't exist on my phone apparently and theres a lot of files to search through, I've searched for that string with terminal but it couldn't find anything. I also searched for mmcblkop1 through to 9 and nothing showed up then either.
Also my phone was unbranded and unlocked when it was bought so I don't know if this would affect my abilities to help you search for the right file or not as it may or may not even be there.

If it helps, the unlock code for my Wildfire was 8 digits long.
Thanks for joining the search I'm thinking that the file name probably wont be the same, but the type of file may be in there somewhere. We need to think of a way to dump the whole internal memory as readable files. I tried breifly to open a nandroid but I can't seem to make the image files readable as just files :-( might try and see if I can contact the guys invloved in doing the sensation to see what kind of file we are looking for and how that zip file works. Also I s-offed by xtc clip so who knows if that file is still there for me

thanks for the offer man
so far ive been trying to look inside a nandroid backup to see if i can find it hiding in there somewhere as a nandroid is the whole system i think?? also ive pm`ed dav22 to ask how he stumbled on the file, as maby knowing what kind of file it is might help wish me luck
update
just realised that sdmaid (app) has a function that allows you to search for words and numbers in files so ive told it to search the whole phone. might take a while
update. sdmaid took nearly half an hour but it came up with two files but they were both bug reports on the sdcard. i dont know if the searcher looks through the whole phone or just the whole sdcard.....

This will extract from nandroids, extract it to a folder on your pc then drag the system.img etc into the application file.
I just had a quick scan through a system.img but I couldn't see /dev/block anywhere so I'm guessing that partition might be locked away from nandroids backups.

ive tried that but it wont open all file types. it wont open the boot for example. ive found something called droid explorer that allows me to search through all the files on the phone through my desktop, so im trying with that for the meantime.
also ive had another though, if some was good enough with the terminal would they not be able to tell the phone to look in its files and folders for the imei number? ive tried but im not skilled enough.
just a thought, what if the information was kept in with the radio information? because why else would htc dev keep the radios locked?

Wouldn't flashing a different radio have locked our phones out of our own sim/network then? I think its gotta be somewhere that is not touched by rooting or any other flashing for that matter!! I don't know lol I'm confusing myself.
Dev/block is found in sys/dev/block ...... haven't a clue what I'm looking for lol.

nice find. ive been looking at these file but they go on forever i tried to remove the file from my phone but root explorer only moves the folder :/
and everything gets altered at somestage :/ is there a bios for the phone aside from the bootloader? and lets think logicaly, what would perform the check to make sure its the right sim?
Found a file that might be interesting!!! System/xbin/blockdev. ?? I don't know I'm way out of my depth here now so think I'll leave it to people who know more. Would be better to know what to look for?

i dunno man, ill be honest half of this is guesswork on my part. what would be good is if we could get a program that would scan every file on the phone in search of the code. but i dunno like.
Wow...... how deep does sys/dev/block go? Or am I just going round in circles? lol

Ok now I'm confused?
Is it supercid/cid we need to change to 11111111?
Mine is currently vodap001 which would mean I'm locked ti Vodafone presumably even though I have a o2 sim in.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda premium
Does revolutionary not give supercid? See I used xtc clip.... we might have to supercid then I was looking at my bootloader earlier and the simlock command looks for a mccmnc file and the Cid file. I know that it won't work on mine as the xtc clip deletes/ alters these files so we may need to supercid the phones as the sensations get supercid'd
