so, i just synced a movie to my Focus. It took quite a while, because it had to convert the video, which was high quality to begin with. However, no that it's been converted and i'm watching it on my phone it looks terrible. It's like watching youtube and not youtube in HD. My Tilt 2 had better video quality than this.
Has anyone successfully synced a movie to their phone without it being reduced to trash?
Up until now, i've been able to tolerate the small issues, but if this is the bottom line when it comes to video quality, ATT can have the phone back.
That's because the zune software doesn't do as good a job of encoding video as a manual encoder like Handbrake would do..
Try converting with Handbrake (http://www.handbrake.fr)
and entering the following into the "Advanced" section.. on the bottom of the window and hit enter.
ref=5:bframes=0:me=umh:subq=9:mixed-refs=1:8x8dct=0:analyse=all:cabac=0
These are settings that the Zune HD would take and play without the software re-encoding.. so maybe WP7 will be similar in that regard.

poor video quality regarding youtube...if you watch youtube with a wifi connection the picture is ok to watch in comparision to watching youtube on 3g...for some reason the phone uses a low quality for playing youtube and other videos over 3g...hopefully someone makes a tweaking program or a work around because my att fuze played gorgeous video over any connection
I used handbrake to convert a couple dvd's and they look great on the device. They were actually video's I dd for my Captivate but they lok great on the Focus as well.

Does anyone have issues with video playback? It seems that every file I throw at the hero seems to have audio and video synchronization issues. Specifically, video lags behind audio, you hear something and see it later. I've tried HTC's player and Meridian. The files play on my pc just fine and aren't huge files.
Are there some recommended bitrates for Hero? I'm using an iPod/phone converter (videora) to get my files encoded which has options for bitrate. Bit disappointed that the Hero can't keep up with iPhone again though.

In short, the Hero has massive problems playing mp4-video without a glitch. The best I've acchieved is smooth video that slows down a bit and then becomes faster to catch up with the timeline every 10 seconds.
This can be done by using an exact set of conversion options with one of many many encoders. Some say it works perfectly for them, but I suspect their eyes are just not as finely tuned as mine
Main thing seems to be the target resolution can be no higher than 480x360.
Try encoding/downloading psp video files its not 100% but very close

Cheers dude, I did look but I can't find anything about synchronisation, my videos aren't dropping frames (or at least that doesn't bother me), it's just that the audio is constantly out of sync with video. Makes everything look like it's dubbed, when people talk their lips don't match the sound. You see an explosion (for example)and hear it later.
I'm going to do some experiments with bitrates and converters today.
How exciting!

Dude try using psp settings. I was having the same issues with avi's & mp4's but now I'm using psp settings its almost perfect

Could you post what the settings are? I tried a load of things earlier and it was all rubbish.
Resolution, bit rate for video and audio as well as file type would be grrrrreat!
Well, I -THINK- I've cracked it.
There are some dropped frames still but image quality is good and the sound is in sync. Here are the settings when using Handbrake http://handbrake.fr/?article=download to do the conversion:

That's the best result I got after HOURS of experimenting but I'd be interested if anyone has anything better.

I myself, haven't been able to get Handbrake working with any settings. Audio always stutters like crazy, so the video is basically unwatchable.
What does work for me is Videora, which has a bunch of free converters bundled for a specific platform, so you can get a Videora iPod -edition and a Videora HTC-edition. There's a general edition as well.
The GUI is horrific and loads weird web pages into a huge box inside the program (presumably to allow advertising whilst using the program), but I did manage to get the smoothest playback out of it of all the converters I tried. I think I even went with default settings for HTC G1-video.
The video plays ok, the sound and video are in sync, but the video slows down and catches up every 10 seconds or so.
Hope you get it working! I am pretty hopeful that the coming update will alleviate the problem...
Thanks, will have a look at those threads. The Videora converter didn't work well at all for me, I'm wondering if there are certain files that retain characteristics that the phone doesn't like. IE that you may get a better result with converting from divx to mp4 than, for example high quality mp4 to something the hero can handle.
Today at Sprint store I played the same YouTube video on the Hero and the Pre side by side. The Pre looked great, the Hero had a very low frame rate and poor resolution. I hope someone can tell me something was wrong with the Hero and it is not always like this.
I am seriously considering buying a Hero and have been spending a lot of time at my local Sprint story getting to know it. Today I was trying out flash video on many sites and they all looked bad like I described above. I just assumed the videos had a poor source until I tried a YouTube video on the Pre. It is hard to believe all the reviews I have been seeing of the Hero wouldn't have hammered it for this if it were a common problem.
maybe the reviews didn't hammer it since at the time the choice was 'average flash performance' vs 'no flash at all'... I always watch youtube vids in the You Tube app which plays them smooth as silk, even in HD (with the occasional flutter)
If the need for smooth Flash animations takes precedence over the 1001 other unbelievably high quality aspects of the HTC Hero, then you should probably just buy a Pre like all the other dorks...
The quality of the video on the actual YouTube app is way superior to that you will get going onto the main site via the browser and the HTC Flash player.

I'm not sure if the YouTube app chooses the video quality for you or not based on your connection. But, if the video starts off on low quality, just hit the menu button, choose "more" on the pop-up menu, and then select High Quality. It's crystal clear after that.

it is true, i did not know that. I usually watched videos through the site. Tried the youtube app on my hero and it is indeed crystal clear. Cool

It is a physically separate app from which you can search/view Youtube videos. It came preloaded on my GSM Hero, so I assume it's still on the Sprint Hero.
If you go to Youtube via the browser, it launches the HTC Flash Player when you try to view a video, and this is quite poor! Thinking about it, I think on the G1 if you were on YouTube in a browser, it would launch any videos via the Youtube app (since it doesn't have a flash player).

I think the "idea" is that if you have flash, you don't need the YouTube app. Sadly, it's a bad idea!

exactly what I do and the quality is awesome, suck that the app wont allow you to choose HD for all videos.
Good advice in this thread and I would like too add I do not miss it Pre one bit. That device has some serious flaws not likely to be addressed for another year. Namely its weak SDK, lack of deep system / hardware access and lack of GPU support. The Pre can't use its own hardware properly much less the lack of options in all of the OS.

Wait, are you saying you have to do tell it to play high quality every time? That would suck indeed, and would be a serious oversight in functionality.

Yes you do unless on WiFi. Then I think it automatically goes into high quality mode
Pre vs and youtube
I stoped by a Bell to try a Pre and compared it to my HTC touch on same Bell network, yes picture was great on Pre but it was slow, in fact I gave up waiting for it to load some video as my touch was playing them in half the time. Today at work we had my touch on bell a Touch 2 Pro on Telus and a iPhone on rogers, all playing the same video from You Tube and nothing compared to the touch pro 2 for quality video was HD looking and played without jumping, the IPhone 3gs crashed tohe sound quit working we had to restart it, and it then worked but picture of video was not full screen as the other two had. Big differance was the way they handled buffering the IPhone buffered all at first then played non-stop the other two would play a few seconds then buffer for up to 2 minutes play a few seconds then again buffer. I then played my IPod Touch same video but wifi, again video did not fit all the screen but no buffering and no digitaizing. So all in all a big disapointment with all three networks and their ability to play streaming HD video!
I was at the Sprint store again today and tried to enable high quality, but could never find the setting. I pressed the menu button over and over again while the video was playing, but it never did anything. Also, I intentionally loaded a video via the YouTube App and the quality was still bad. Furthermore I rebooted the device to be sure it wasn't just loaded down with running programs.

With the video on you press menu > more > watch high quality.
That's what I did. I pushed the menu button next to the trackball and nothing happened. No menu appeared. I also pushed every other button and the touched the screen.
Hey guys i wanna ask someone who have a xperia x2 how is video playback quality cause i have put many videos with many file type MP4 WMV and the playback was rubbish the picture isn't clear.
even though the phone is said to support HD video playback but when i play a 360p video it isn't clear.
another thing about the youtube app videos are the same not clear just like am watching a very bad video.

What are you using to play them back ... the built-in player?
I was not happy with it -- skipped alot and soethimes just stopped and needed to reboot ... I now use Corel player -- and that seems to work well ...
i used Media player and the slideview player. the videos did not work on core player only audio played.
as for youtube app is there anything i can do the resolution is very bad can you help?

Did you look at the settings for CorePlayer that are listed in XDA? when I first loaded it, it also did not play the video ... They are under tools, settings, then select the video page --- I have mine set to GDI video output, High video quality, Only for 50% smooth zoom, and the Dither box checked.
I think those are the only changed that I made from the default settings, but is was awhile ago, so I am not 100% sure ...
I don't use youtube, so I can't help there ... but there is a new app listed with Omarket that is supposed to provide smooth video -- but I have not tried it ...

Just wondering if anyone knows of an android video player app that can handle video's shot at higher than normal frame rates? I just got a gopro, but all the video's filmed above 30fps struggle to play back. I usually use 1440p 48fps, as this gives nice smooth playback and the biggest field of view when i'm skiing. i understand that stuff like this is better off being edited on a pc to get any sort of decent results.....but i'd just like to be able to have a little look at the vids straight from the memory card before i get home too.
so far i've tried vlc, which just becomes a garbled mess, the stock video app which detects it as a sound only file, and mx player which plays back the video in slow motion and plays back the sound in sections (i.e. it will play sound at correct speed, but keep stopping while it waits for the video to sync up). so mx is the best so far, but is there an payer that can actually understand the higher frame rate and play it back at that rate too?
Try the latest vlc nightly. Go into settings and try it with and without hardware acceleration

I notice a considerable difference in quality of video (resolution-wise) when streaming video from hulu plus or watchespn. It seems to be stuck at like 360/480....basically sub 720p. Is there a setting I'm missing or do these apps just use a different video code or something? The reason I ask is because youtube videos look amazing so I know it's not my connection. It would be disappointing to know such a great screen is going to waste....but I would still like to know so please someone tell me what's going on.
