It seems from the good work at Engadget that the Nexus S will be a stock android phone running on Galaxy S hardware with a front facing camera. If this is the case, and it comes to Verizon as the original was supposed to, it would be nothing to port these roms over to our phones seeing how the alleged hardware is exactly like ours with a camera. We would also see development ramp up as well. Interesting indeed.

I would assume yph are correct. Best buy leaked documents on phandroid say its coming out on Nov,14. Though it will be T-Mobile. That will just give all the GSM galaxy users gingerbread I would assume while we wait til 11/11/11 to get froyo.

Slim to none. Just like Verizon and Sprint were gonna get the N1 but ended up with "like" devices with "comparable" features in the Incredible and Evo.
Verizon will likely not ever have another developer phone(d1 was/is) because they can't control what goes on it if it is like the N1. They want to have complete and total control over their phone.

There is no way this phone is the same hardware as the galaxy s..........for one the camera is different, the flash placement is different and so is the speakerphone placement!!!

This phone is petty much standard hardware. I don't think anything past 1.0 GHz is released yet by anyone.

One of the posts on this phone connected to flckr. They looked up the model number of the phone and found pics connected to it rated at 5 mega pixels. Same as our phone. The screen looks to be the same size and allegedly samoled. Even if it was just a developer phone, we could always pick and pull what we want from it, just like we so from the other galaxy s variants. It looks like hardware wise, we aren't going to be much different. It's been approved by the fcc, a while ago, so theyprobably didn't get a chanceto change much. This is all speculation of course, but it makes sense.

I was thinking of migrating to the merge or inedible hd if this turned into too much of a fiasco, but this has me very curious to see how this will pan out. Google's sort has proven much different than samsung. Extended my patience a bit.

I agree. I don't really like the look of the phone if that's the final model. I like the design of the vibrant. One of the few things Samsung got right about the phone.

I personally find the squarish design quite sexy.
What's really crazy is that those specs mean it's better tricked out than 90% of netbooks out there.
Ill take the 4.3 inch screen. My sister has an evo and that her only form of braging right because the vibrant w/bionix smashes her's with a custom sense rom.

That's just someone's crappy rendering. If you follow the link to the FCC page and view the label location PDF you'll see that it's rounded like the Vibrant.

If true it would be nice. i do miss the HD2 size. For me a slightly larger screen would be nicer as I would like it to be more business friendly. I'd go for a 4.5-7 size screen if they could work out the battery issues, but then that's just me. Nice specs if it is real.......and yes TMO will have it if it does come out.

Samsung is the business of kicking out hardware for the android market right now and the primary reason software updates are taking a back seat. Samsung doesn't have resources to dedicate. Whatever software and/or hardware problems encountered, the customer will ultimately need to except partial operability. Samsung is on rise of becoming THE android manufacturer. This new device doesnt surprise me.

I'm probably going to do the same, I'm hoping that it can get me til sometime in december of 2012 so i can leave verizon...though my contract is "up" in march of 2012 my girlfriend's line doesn't end until 12/23/2012
I just jumped ship from the Fascinate to the Thunderbolt a few days ago. Rooted and have been experimenting.
After getting a sense of the Thunderbolt and putting it side by side with the Fascinate, its not as dominant as I would have expected. The Fascinate's SAMOLED screen is just substantially better than the Thunderbolt's S-LCD. Its not even close really. Also, the latest gen Snapdragon + Adreno 205....doesn't seem as snappy as the Fascinate SoC. Fascinate definitely has better graphics. Very subtle stutters on the Thunderbolt after testing a few ROMs and Kernels. Also, its certainly a matter of opinion, but the Thunderbolt is just a tad too big compared with the Fascinate. They have the power button on top like an iPhone, and the way I would naturally grip the phone puts the power button barely out of reach of my index finger. I have to do a very small phone adjust in my hand to allow my index finger to get on top of the power button, but the Fascinate's 4 inch screen is about as large as I would imagine it could get for it to require no movement of the phone in the palm while operating it, which is preferable I think.
On the other hand - Verizon's LTE network is stupid fast. NYC with its saturated 3G networks -- the LTE network is like coming up for air after nearly drowning. Its rock solid everywhere I've been, almost like ubiquitous WiFi. When you really think about it, even the best Dual-Core Cortex A9 phones on ATT can't really touch a Cortex A8 experience on WiFi. The network makes an enormous difference and that can't be stressed enough.
The Thunderbolt is sexier than the Fascinate with its screen off. I don't really care about the kickstand, but the feel and heft is a welcome change from the Fascinate. Although not a graphics beast, it is by no means a slouch. The UI is very snappy, and I'll be very curious once CM7/AOSP gets released.
Thats the final thing about the Thunderbolt that I think is worth mentioning. The Thunderbolt forum is buzzing. Lots of devs, people are gearing up for CM7 nightlies/crackflashing. Not to say this forum wasn't Fantastic, but the Thunderbolt, and HTC in general, seem to have a slightly more robust community. I'm not at all upset with my decision to switch, but the Fascinate is by NO MEANS old hardware right now, in fact using the Thunderbolt makes me appreciate how good Samsung was on the hardware side.

I agree, and with an unlocked bootloader and a whole SLEW of awesome devs that I know are gonna jump on this beast of a phone and with Sammy leaking source code and updates like EB01/EC01 for free beta testing, we don't need official OTA updates. I WILL BE GETTING THE GALAXY S 2!

That is a great question. I bought a used Fascinate to hold me over, and to learn the Android system. I am hoping that later in the year I can get something with dual core and LTE. But I also don't want to give up battery life. So this may not be possible.
I like Android, but have a bad opinion of Samsung compared to my previous multiple HTC WinMo devices.
So I want:
For the OS: Android, likely not Microsoft, never Apple.
Manufacturer: HTC, maybe Moto, Samsung is low on the list.
Carrier: Verizon...........period.. What I need it for, other choices fail.
Dual core would be nice, but not at the expensive of a lot of battery life.
I want LTE. Not badly, but there is not much reason to throw away a 2 year contract and not get it.
The Thunderbolt is almost it, and may BE it, for me. Maybe I really don't want dual core just yet anyway. The new SGS II is probably nice, but I'm sure I would be returning in to Verizon as it would have the same hardware weaknesses that I see in the Fascinate.
So I'm waiting it out for now to see what else comes along. Until I smash this P.O.S. Fascinate against the ground and I'm forced to decide.
It's going to be really tough for me to buy another Samsung phone. The internal guts of the Fascinate are awesome (which is why I bought it), but the lack of support and poorly written code is a real let-down. I'm definitely going to explore other phone manufacturers and carriers to see how things compare. If another network suits my daily needs, I'll definitely switch... possibly to T-Mobile given their upcoming line-up of phones. I'm not excited about the possible AT&T merger, but I definitely won't be locking myself into any contracts in the near future. Android progresses way too quickly to get locked into anything longer than 1 year - and those contracts are going away.
As much as most would hate to hear it, if the iPhone had Google Navigation, a universal micro-USB port and maybe removable internal storage + battery... I would consider it. I doubt those things would ever happen, so no iPhone for me. An MIUI-compatible Android would be much better anyways.
Galaxy S2. Samsung is improving. I mean, GB is rolling out to the i9000 before any other phone. Their hardware is superior. With the Galaxy S2, it's EXT4. AND, the bootloader is gonna be open. It seems that they ARE listening to the consumers. Though I'm angry that we still don't have 2.2, I blame Verizon for that more than Samsung.
Okay, others have asked prime or hercules, and my real question that would determine which I choose.. our vibrants had REAL potential. No less than the new phone should have, just lesser hardware. All of the sgs1 us versions seem to have no support or updates except what you find on here(after a few months).
Will the hercules have the same fate? Is there any reason to believe they won't do the same thing again? I don't want to spend another 500+ on a device they forget about a few months after they release it. Would you take the chance seeing their track record with our phone and variants?
The most odd thing is that the international versions seem to be better supported(the i9100 more than i9000), so is the problem that they don't want to waste their resources keeping 4 different models of the phone updated in the US? And could they possibly keep the hardware on the us variants close enough spec wise that they could work on an upgrade for all versions, and just tweak each for specific devices?
I know there are no solid answers out there, but I am more wondering what the community here thinks.
Most likely not this happened do to the SGS4G came out if something similar happens again but you know that is why there is xda an the cyanogen team so don't worry

Yes it will most likely happen again. It's the carrier's business model. They want you to shell out the money to buy the newer phone so they only support the older model for so long. Get a Nexus phone if you want updates faster.
From what I have read this far the sg2 will be replaced by the sg2 plus to match the nexus prime's screen resolution. Because of that fact I will not buy sg2 as well the nexus phone will be the last sammy phone because google just acquired motorola. So the next google phone will be a motorola.

Well the nexus got updates quicker and I constantly see(via news readers) most phones getting updates regardless of carrier.
What the jasonhunterx said(that I could understand) about having xda or cyanogen is opposite of ideal.. where would our devices be if we got a source from Samsung for gingerbread? Miles ahead, everything working, less headaches for developers and users..
But I don't see this as something the carrier is responsible for unless the manufacturer made an agreement with them, which would border on crooked.
I would have bought the sgs2 if it wasn't with att bands.. and there's no promise that the prime will be offeres as a T-Mobile phone.
If the prime doesn't hit T-Mobile and the Hercules is doomed to make the same mistakes, what phone would you get to stay with tmo? Is there an international phone that has the right bands and can compare to sgs2, Hercules, or prime?

I believe that the Hercules will have much better support. In my opinion, just like the second poster said, they stopped supporting the vibrant because tmo launched its new "4g" service not too long after the vibrant dropped. So unless 5g comes out a week after the Hercules, I don't think we should have anything to worry about. I hope.......

Here is a position I just don't understand. I won't call it whining. Lets say the constant negative portrayal of the Galaxy S line, Samsung, and every other phone manufacturer at one time or another as not supporting or updating their software often enough.
If you look at it objectively, does the Vibrant really need an update? It came out with Eclair. Then came the upgrade to Froyo, which raised Quadrant scores (if you care about that sort of thing) four fold. Finally, the incremental upgrades through Froyo from J all the way to KB5. KB5 is rock-solid stable and fast in its stock form, and even better when customized.
So why all the complaining? The phone is fast and stable. I don't hear anyone complaining about Team Whiskey's Bionix 1.3.1 even though they haven't updated it in many months. Why? Because it's fine as is. So, in my opinion, is the Vibrant.

Yes 2.2 for vibrant is stable but there are some Apps that can only be use when you're using gingerbread.

There are phones running 1.5 stable, but that isn't a reason it shouldn't be upgraded to whatever it can run. Take the Motorola droid. I have no idea what they updated to, but the og droid has run cyanogen stable far before our vibrant could run it at all. It is a solid phone, and wasn't "discarded" by the manufacturer soon after the release. They did a good job I heard.
The sgs1 branded phone is capable of more than the current generation of android. The iphone, with all the things I don't like about the way they do their phones, supports multiple generations of their products for multiple years. Our phones shouldn't be 2 generations of os behind with no real hope of an upgrade within a year of coming out.

I think the Hercules will be the lower of the other sgs2 variants nothing will be easy just as the vibrant was full of great dev but nothing to work with but the same stuff. GB has came a long way we thought that was going to be a easy port, lol I really hope they at least get the gps right on the sgs2 this run. End of rant ;-)

No support for Hercules. It's Vibrant/Galaxy S 1 all over again. Each of the carriers releasing a different variant of a phone that was released months ago in Europe. You'd be crazy to buy a Hercules or other SGS2 phone. Just what was the reason for the delay? Carrier customizations, more than likely. And the fact that it took them so long to release the US variants does not speak well for future updates.

4.65" is including the part for "buttons" since they will be on the screen as there aren't any physical keys. so technically it isn't 4.65"

Depends on your definition of "soon".
As of right now it looks like it will be released around November.
If you want a cynic's opinion, here it is: The Nexus S was old-hat before it was even released. The only benefit was the ease of unlocking and getting updates first, which sounds awesome until you realize that the initial versions of GB were massively buggy. I'd expect the same for ICS. Add to that the fact that HTC is making it so you can easily unlock all of their phones and the list of reasons why I would want one gets much, much shorter. Non-existent, in fact. I'm actively looking for a way to get my hands on a device with hardware that wasn't dated before the first model rolled off the line or wasn't succeeded months later by a phone with a key feature the original was lacking for a more than sub-par carrier. I've said it before, but to save you the trouble of reading it somewhere else, I should have learned my lesson about buying Samsung phones after the Epic 4g debacle but I didn't. I have now and I'll advise anyone against buying their POS devices.

See there are things called 'lists' where you mention many things that are all related to one other topic but are not necessarily related to each other. Like a grocery list. See cereal and baby spinach are not related to each other but they are both things I need from the grocery store. Just like GB being buggy and my hatred for the way Samsung treats its customers are both reasons why I wouldn't want another nexus device but they are not related to each other. Does basic sentence structure make sense now?

I think he was confused (as was I) by the fact that your conclusion didn't really follow from your argument. You complained about the phone being outdated and you complained about gingerbread being buggy and then you ended by concluding that you shouldn't have bought a Samsung phone. But everything you complained of was Google's doing.

I just picked up an i9020t Nexus S knowing full well that the Nexus Prime is coming. You know why?
Refined Galaxy S hardware
Comfortable rounded edges (looking at you, captivate)
Great ROM support, with ICS on the horizon
Respectable battery life
Pretty freaking fast
So yeah, the phone's hardware is dated. However, the Nexus S is my favorite size and shape, and OC'ed to 1.2ghz with some speed hacks from different places, I can't even imagine wanting for more speed. Now, this is all my opinion, but you can land a Nexus S now for a reasonable price. So get one and have several happy months of hacking!

It seems that Cyanogenmod will not be bringing their next generation (ICS) to the Vibrant. While I really like the Vibrant, perhaps it is time to think about moving on.
Are there any recommendations for where I should be looking. Here would be my considerations:
- I like the hardware features (screen size and resolution and 16GB memory)
- I want the phone to have full Cyanogenmod support
- Cyanogenmod support should include a good gps and battery life (both of which are shortcomings for the Vibrant)
- I need to stick with TMobile
- And, I don't want the phone to cost an arm and a leg
Any thoughts, ideas, advice would be appreciated.

Nexus. Nothing else needs to be said. But if it does not come to to tmobile, I would lean towards HTC, they seem to be able to at least update phones.

I agree. Nexus should be #1 on your list if you want support and like the Vibrant. The HTC Amaze just came out on T-Mobile and has impressive hardware specs and is on the list from HTC to get the ICS update. It also has a 8MP camera with instant picture taking like the Nexus. I would imagine that Cyanogenmod will put out a mod for it. Though any new phones will need some time to see if CM will support it.
The Galaxy Nexus is a pentaband phone, so even if T-Mobile doesn't get it, it'll still run on their network. I normally tell people to get the phone that they like the best. Not everyone is an uber android geek. I told a buddy of mine to get the Droid Charge, he loves the thing. If he waited for the Galaxy Nexus, he'd be disappointed. It's personal preference.
It sounds like you like to tinker. People that like to tinker need a Nexus device because they'll always be the ones with the most support and the smoothest Android experience. I love my Vibrant, it was my first Android device. I'll probably always hold onto it as a backup phone with Stock Froyo + WiFi Calling, but in the future I'll most likely stick to Nexus devices.
Decide what you care about the most and less about hardware/appearance. If you want a custom experience more than what a manufacturer's android experience is, then go for a Nexus with optimized hardware. There are a lot of really nice, very cool phones out there but in terms of longevity of future up to date use, Nexus wins 10 times out of 10.
Also, I wouldn't buy a device based on the promise of updates. Carriers may intend to update a device, but several things can hinder that intention. In all reality, if an upgrade to ICS doesn't come until next August, well, what's the point? Remember, for a long time it looked like Samsung assumed that T-Mobile would want the Vibrant updated, and it didn't happen. There have several devices through the years that were suppose to be updated and never were. Always buy a phone for what it is, not what a carrier says it should be.
Regarding Galaxy Nexus being penta band, doesn't it mean only GSM is supported in 5 bands and not 3G? Why would Samsung build AWS band in a world phone for couple of carriers.

What do you think of the T-Mobile sgs2? Will it get ice or will it end up being forgotten like the vibrant? Seems to me the T-Mobile sgs2 is more powerful than the nexus hardware wise

Higher specs are irrelevant. I'm sure it needs them to push TouchWiz. There is one device ICS is optimized for, and that's the Galaxy Nexus.
1) It's not Samsung that will abandon the SGS, it's T-Mobile
2) If you chase spec sheets you'll be replacing devices every 3-6 months.
Also, manufacturers are going to want to want their frameworks on top of ICS. There's no reference point for how ICS will look or run with TouchWiz, Sense or Motoblur on top of it. You have to go with what you know, not what you think you can assume.

Your advice is based on a "think" without any leak information of a virtual phone
nexus or tmobil sgs2! stay away from amaze
iPhone 5 will be my next device. too tempted by androids openness to play around with all the roms out there. iPhone will take that choice away and simplify things. also would play nicer with my Mac. my MacBook hates the vibrant it seems.

I read a USA today article and the Guy was using it and he said he was using it on T-Mobile and it also has att bands so its merger proof.
