Hello guys,
I used to be a proud owner of an HTC HD, which I recently sold, and now I am wondering what to buy next. The next phone I would like to own is a phone running Android and I know that HTC HD2 is capable of that. What my question is, if there is a significant difference in the performance between same hardware Android phones and the Android on HTC HD2. In other words, is it worth buying the HTC HD2 for use as an Android phone, or should I pay a little more money and buy a Desire for example. I would also like to know if 3D games are playable on Android on the HTC HD2 (as they werent on the HD, lagged like hell). Thanks in advance
Don't buy an HD2, buy an android phone instead.

well you will probably end up rooting any phone you get anyway apparently. Games have been flawless on my HD2, including a pretty heavy game like heavy gunner 3d. not 1 single bit of lag. But unless you can find an hd2 dirt cheap I'd get the new nexus s
I have also one more question. What is the progress of the Android on the HTC HD2. I know that it is not a ROM yet, is it like the one on the HTC HD (running Haret and its on the SD card) or is it something better? I read of some "Android Builds" but I don't really know the difference. Also will there ever be a Android ROM for the HD2 ?
my advice is if you have money to invest, buy either Desire HD or Nexus S. As much as smooth android runs on HD2, it is still can't be compared to a native android phone, the biggest problem being the battery drain. in standby it is alright, but when you use it it drains a lot.
I use Android on the HD2 because it's the one Tmo USA 3G capable phones hardware that I like that runs Android. I have/had Samsung Vibrant and prefer the HD2 hardware. I'm not a fan of the bulky G2. I like the 4.3" screen, and will not go back to using anything less than 4". I have not tried a MyTouch 4G because it doesn't offer anything compelling to draw me away from the HD2. But I have android running perfectly on my HD2, and it did take a bit of tinkering to get it running the way I want (Some SD cards work better than others, getting the build running, etc). Day to day it's every bit as good (and faster) than my Vibrant. There are a few minor quirks. Like having to unmount the card to install come applications from the marketplace. But, other than boot time there really isn't much advantage going to a phone that comes with Android.

It's nowhere near completion and I dont think it'll ever will. Even the blackstone like u said (which has been out for what 2yrs now?) still can't run android natively so you can kiss goodbye the possibility of android running on NAND anywhere in the distant future. It's a nice novelty idea to play around with if you already have an HD2 or familiar with the constant struggle that current developers are facing, but for everyday use, I'd say you're better off getting a pure android phone...much more efficient than what the HD2 can deliver on crutches.
Yeah, if you want to run android, you'll be better off getting a native android phone. Why buy a phone to run a port of android when you can get a phone that was made to run it.
Now if you also want to run winmo and don't mind putting in a lot of time testing out different android builds and working out bugs and quirks of a ported android, then the hd2 is a good phone... but don't expect it to run as well as a native android phone.

Yes it's taking time because there has been lot's of updates in android going on... and the developers has to keep up with those updates , hence it seems endless... but still HD2 is hell lot of device. and it can't be compared to native android devices....

I think you missed the whole point of what was said...
Well actually, the only thing I'd like to use Android for is the Games. I'm okay with using WinMo the other time (for browsing the net, watching movies. etc.). So I guess thats possible. Also why not buy an Android phone you ask? Well, cause the 4.3 inch Android phones are a hell of a lot more expensive. And one more thing, the HTC HD Blackstone didn't get a full Android ROM because all of the developers migrated to the HTC HD2 Leo.

So basically the only thing going for you are the 4.3in screen and the fact that it's cheaper than android phones in that price range? I don't know about a 4.3in but most samsung galaxy S line are about $150 with a 2yr contract and you can probably find an X10 for pennies. Unless you REALLLYYY want to dual boot winmo and android, I don't see why anyone would waste their time, money and energy and would get the HD2 just for running android to play games...don't you think that's a little ass-backward? Why would anyone want a winmo phone, running haret on SD card, booting android...just to play android games? hahaha

If you want android for gaming, I would get something from the Samsung galaxy line... it has a much better gpu, which isn't currently being taken advantage of by apps and games, but since Google's new development phone, the nexus s, is basicly a galaxy phone and has same chipset, future development and games will surely take advantage of it. Basicly, android developers and Google are going to use the nexus s as the standard to develop for like they currently use the nexus one... so many more games will be designed based around the chipset the nexus s and all the galaxy s line of phones use.

I can find one reason. HD2 i very good phone, but if i would like to get just phone i would use Nokia E51 or something similar... I like to play with my device, its kind of toy and HD2 has excellent dev community. Going back to original question. If you want just working device with Android buy something with Android installed natively, but if you don't mind or, like me, like playing with your phone HD2 is very good choice.
Well, I never use WinMo any more.
Android has everything I need.
And it is fast and I seldom experience bugs.
The only real downside is that you really have to be a power user. I spent a lot of hours updating and tweaking. But, then again, I love that
I agree that the HD2 is a nice device. The build quality is extraordinary.
I have had a look at both Desire HD and HD7 -- none of them have as good build quality. Samsung and SE always felt plastic-ish.
If you get a HD2 cheap today - sure, try it out.
But if I were to buy a new phone today - I would probably buy a native Android.
Alright so I thought id give my two cents. I've owned a nexus one and a galaxy s as far as Android phones go. I went back to the hd2 for a couple of reasons. First off, its a lot cheaper than any other phone with comparable hardware. Look on Craigslist Nd you can find a new hd2 for like $200. I like the screen better than the samoled

Didn't finish, lol. Anyways, the amoled screens aren't as clear as the lcd on the hd2. The colors and contrast of the amoled screens were amazing but I didn't like how you could see pixels. Second, the hd2 has so many roms, even more than the nexus one. And finally, from my experience, the hd2 has been a lot faster than either of those phones. I'm running a desire hd Rom and the quadrant score is higher than either of the phones I mentioned, even after I modded them. Last thing ill say is battery life is definitely not a big problem. Id get about 1 hour more with the nexus one or galaxy than my hd2 with Android. I can easily go 10+ hours on pretty heavy use. Turn internet off and you can go way way longer. So battery life with Android running off an SD card is fine. Oh last thing, changing builds is so easy, just copy a new build on your phone and that's it. So get an hd2. Won't regret it.

I looked up your phone and it seems to have only around 90MB RAM, which in itself is probably enough to say that neither OS would run on your phone.
Perhaps you should consider buying a cheap second hand android or winmo phone.
Will there be a tool developed to get rid of the bad blocks people are experiencing when using custom roms on the hd2? (android, 3.0 roms and wp7)
i dont think so ...cuz it's a hardware probleme ...and cant be fixed by any tool ( in my knowledge) only replacing the rom will do
there is a fix for bad blocks...stop using other os to our phone. guys we must understand that this phone was designed to run windows mobile.If the devs made it to run and other os doesnt mean that this thing will be without consequences.
personally i have until now 12 bad blocks and i know that maybe someday they will be more.also i know that maybe someday my hd2 will not boot anymore in bootloader and i could not change the os.or someday the screen will stop responding because of the known issue with buttons.
But the biggest thing i know is that windows mobile cannot cover me as user,like android does.So i take the risk to run android on my winmo phone.In a winmo phone that runs android better than the middle range native android phones.For last thing i hope that my hd2 will last until next year when samsung galaxy s2 will cost around 400€.because i think that 500+ euros for a phone with too much plastic and running only one os is too much...
Recently I built a Windows Home Server 2011 box and it allows media streaming with server side transcoding to a Windows Phone 7. I've never used a WP7 device before, but would like to try it out. I've seen info about being able to dual boot an HD2 with Android and WP7. That would be awesome as I am a big Android user right now on my Vibrant. At about $150 on ebay, would anyone recommend the HD2 to test out WP7? For about the same price I can get an HD7, but lose the Android ability. How well do both OS's work on this phone? Thanks
The HD2 is an amazing phone and both OS's work great on it. I would get the HD2 again if I had the spare money but I'm satisfied with my G2x.

HD2 is really the best phone which I have ever used. No one can convience to step over to another phone.
HD2, the ever green smart phone, is still the best. Not only 2 operating system option but also 5 more...and each of them work great impeccable.
But you should have this in mind that this phone is getting old and although we still benefit from the latest updates in android and WP7 but some major things like display quality or perhaps hardware capabilities may tight our developing.
Anyway, If I had any choices undoubtedly I would bought HD2 again and again. How many phones can you name that now can run ICS? None of previous heros except HD2, The LEO.

Apart from Android emerging from beta to almost there and the want dual core shifting to want quad core, no change.
The HD2 is still doing it, in spades.
It's a classic. When I do eventually upgrade and buy an HTC Humdinger™ it will have at least 4 cores running at 1 gig with at least 2GB DDR RAM
Until then I'll keep my HD2. Even then, I'll keep my HD2.

Are you referring to Android for this phone?
I'm really leaning towards selling off some of my older electronics to cover the cost for one of these phones. Then I can test out WP7 and whatever other OS I can put on there. I'll still keep my Vibrant, as I know I do still really like Android and having a built for Android device is good to keep around. Based on the comments on this thread, $150 seems worth it.
That being said, does anyone think there will be another phone in the future that is similar to this? Will there ever be another phone that so many OS'es will be developed for? I've never seen this in a phone before and I wonder if it will ever happen again.

Certainly. It's already being built.
One manufacturer will make a well specified device, using the right chips, which all operating systems can talk to,
which a lot of developers will notice, which will be priced right, which will take the market by storm, which will go
EXTRA LARGE on XDA developers and will lead to another HD2 like device only faster. Much MUCH faster
As you point out, the HD2 does pretty much everything, very well, right now and it has done for years.
All that's left is CPU and network speed increases and the ability to switch between operating systems on the fly.
Quad cores, lots of RAM .. any reason why two or three operating systems can't be run simultaneously ?
Wouldn't it be nice to switch between Linux, Android and a Windows 6.5 / 7.0 hybrid like you switch between apps ?
Keep all those familiar legacy apps and selectively take advantage of all the new apps ?
hd2 running many os like Ubuntu, Android, WM6.5, WP7, meego and etc. But my wireless service devider don`t market meego phone and wp7 phone. so I need hd2 to use WP7...

this is the best phone ever, no matter what. though it was built 2 years ago, it is a device with most operating systems ported...my father used it for one and a half year, and i'm using it now....wouldn't change it for nothing...

Does the HD2 have any special feature that it supports so many OS, or is it just that developers focused this device specially.

Well,If we look back to the history of HD2 , it was born with winmo 6.5 which soon died out.For such a unique and powerful (expensive too) device to just been thrown to dustbin - it was hard for the users,so a lot of interest on how to make it survive - obviously by porting newer OSs.Once it made so , there was no look back ,even now it is one of the most interesting piece for developers.But will there be another HD2 , I don't think so.With so many smart phones in market - more powerful by day ,we will rather move on ...But HD2 development may last as long as its hardware is compatible enough...

i had an HD2 before, and i loved it. an i still do.
Most of us old HD2 users have upgraded to Sensation (some also to the Desire HD).
The thing is HD2 doesent have any special feature that makes it able to run different things - just a great community with the passion and drive to make all these different OS work. So what you need is a phone thats "popular", which will creat a great community as well.
Ive got the Sensation, and it got plenty of diffrent roms you can install... right now im on Android 4.0.3 with Sense 3.6 - and it runs AWESOMELY! soon we will port the new sense 4.0 also
i hope that Ubuntu would be ported to )

i think the hardware will be compatible long time. The matter is, that you cant develop a rom which will have dual core, super amoled display, better resolution, nfc, 4g and so on.
Respect for the HD2 that it could mess up so many years with any new smartphone, but i think in future this will be hard.
So, what i am going to say is, that xda, or (nearly) all developers should focus a new phone for porting rom and that stuff.
For example to wait for a new wp apollo phone, which will support multicore and higher resolution.
If it is just the focus of the developers which made the HD2 so popular, it would be great, to name a newer device as "the next HD2"
(sounds like the next uri geller^^)

Most of the current WP7 phones are still single core, and while that's might be good for now, I'd rather have a dual core in my next phone, since I'd probably be using it for a good two years or so. A dual core WP7 phone+Android ports+Ubuntu ports = perfect? I think yes.

there are rumours about an hd8 with apollo.
apollo will have new res, nfc and multicore support.
i hope this phone will replace the hd2 with dignity

I don't get it: Why would I need a dual/quadcore? My HD2 works without any lags, I can't find any difference regarding the overall userexperience compared to a SGSII etc. Are the games a main reason for the more powerful hardware?

Well mine does as well, I'm on ICS and underclocked actually, to 768 Mhz and it's smooth. However, I want to be able to play some more intensive games [ like GTAIII] and whatnot without having to used a dumbed down data for it. Also, while it's not that big a deal for me, it would be kinda nice to be able to play back 1080p video. But for now, my HD2 is still awesome; I have a friend with a Droid X 2 and one with a Droid 3, and there's nothing they can do with their 2011 phone I can't do on my 2009 phone!

I'm starting my reading up on the skills needed for Android developing, I really wanna take part in making the 'next HD2' as awesome as the current one!
HTC Edge/Endeavour will surely be the next developers phone, no?
I doubt there will ever be such a phone again. The industry is consolidating around two OSs (Android and iOS). Windows Phone has an outside chance of becoming relevant again next year.
I say keep your HD2 going until the Edge/Endeavor comes along. I've got the new Galaxy Nexus and, I must say, the experience of Ice Cream Sandwich on my HD2 is not much different to the Galaxy Nexus with its dual cores. Wait just a little bit longer.
Dont what ever any of you do sell your HD2's I sold mine about a year ago and have been through copious Windows phones, Android Phones even Iphones...nothing comes close to the diversity of this phone, I miss the ability to switch from Android to WP...
The community and development is second to none.
I currently us a Galaxy s2, OK the development is very good for Android Roms, OK its got an amazing screen and very powerful, but really never feels like I am in control of what it can do, I would love to try the WP7.5 but would hate to be restricted to just one operating system, they are all boring after a while, the HD2 allows you so much more

ive moved to the galaxy note and have kept the hd2 but wouldnt even entertain using it now, unless something happens to the note
main purpose is that it works, unlike on the hd2 where something dont work or are slow to work due to non native driver support, the devs are fantastic in what they have done for the device, but im actually glad im not swapping/updating roms every week
