Just a quick lil' documentation as to my Cellular South HTC Hero's first major downfall after over 7 months of use.
After using many different ROMS and lots of use on my phone, I decided to RUU to get a new radio and such, and see how it would run. So, after running the update, I noticed the SD card was "removed" and Sense was slow as ever. So, after playing with a few different cards and making sure the cards worked, I called CS, told them the issue, and for the short version, said "LOL borked, invoke your warranty!". So, nice and simple, I went to the store, paid the fee to do it on the spot, and got a brand new Black Hero with the new hardware, plus the 2.1 update 1 (to be rooted shortly, and CM back in. XD )
In short, has anyone had this issue before, and has anyone noticed a difference between the silver and black hardware? Take care, y'all!

Same phone, just black.

Was curious if anyone bought an HD2 without knowing it's potential.I was looking at adding lines to my T-Mobile account (thanks to family members stupidity). I browsed online at my free phone options (per line) and went with the highest priced. Almost changed my mind but after being told this phone would no longer be available in 3 hours I went for it. Thinking I got a great deal after misreading the os, I couldn't wait till my android phone arrived. Upon booting I about smashed the phone through my brain. Thanks to wm6.5 lack of wow factor I stumbled upon xda. Thanks to playing angry birds on a friends phone and the humility of admitting his android os was superior I picked apart xda and had an SD version by morning with angry birds installed. The joy derived from one upping him can't be described. All the devs and dedicated owners have my appreciation. Without the devs creating so diligently and xda members continued testing I would have hated this phone.

Not in the same way you did but I did stumble upon the HD2 in a way.
I knew it came with WM6.5 but I also knew I could load Android on it as a dual boot...little did I know the NAND version was so close behind and now WP7 is almost a lock, along with Unbuntu and Meego....this phone is just a crazy hackers dream...
I use hackers loosely when I talk about myself...it's more that I can follow directions good then hack anything...
THE DEV's ROCK...!!!!
A friend of my wife got it and was talking about how nice it was so I decided to try it. Didn't really stumble on it but I also hadn't used WM prior to that. Before it was BlackBerry or the Sidekick.
i bought the phone off my friend's friend for 120 bucks in a heartbeat because it's a htc and it's almost brand new before knowing anything about this phone. my friend's friend is a girl, she don't know anything about this phone also, she bought the phone with t-mousa contract about 2 months ago. the only reason she told me she don't like this phone is b/c the stock winmo 6.5 doesnt show any asian languages and inputs. lol (she is asian.) so she got herself a samsung galaxy S (paying full retail price) and sell this hd2 to me. thanks to xda, i flashed a nand andriod on it and running smooth, everything working and all. (next time i run into her, i should show her my phone and laugh at her...lol...sign )
a while back i was using a dopod 7500. i outgrew the size factor and thus changed to a htc touch pro2. after like a month or two of reading around the xda site, i noticed how powerful and versatile the hd2 was....that's where the regret came in =) but fortunately my touch pro 2 was stolen in my former place of work. my wife, bless her, has always made sure we had home and contents insurance. that was when i immediately opted for a hd2 as a replacement. the insurance guy was offering a htc mozart (running w7). i specifically wanted the hd2 because it was on top of the ladder in terms of wm devices. plus i also knew i could load android into the unit. and i was reading earlier on that w7 could eventually be cracked and loaded as well (which has now happened). so, got my hd2 and have never been more pleased. it's now running android and it's exceeded my expectations.
I previously had the HD1 which I loved because of hardware ans the screen size then when HD2 was released I was like ...WOW!
I really didnt mind Windows Mobile, been using it for years, had plenty of apps but decided to try Android on blackstone (HD1) just because I could
After trying Android on the HD1 I slowy started using it more and more untill I found myself booting into it every time I turned on my phone. This lead to me using a bootloader to automatically starting it when powering on and then ultimatley getting rid of WinMo all together and flashing to NAND in HD2.
I now have WP7 on NAND and Android on SD but will put WP7 on SD if/when its possible as Android is my main OS. Sorry if that went a bit off topic, I didnt really stumble across HD2 I knew I wanted it because it was the big brother to my HD1.
To me the HD2 is as still top of teh range now as it was back then and is still up there with the top spec phones. I dont think I will be retiring this phone for at least another year or two unless something as versatile comes along.
Completely agree this is by far the best phone I've owned.I'll keep it till it dies, and may get an unopened 2nd for that sad day.

Just saw this thread and i felt completely identified. Six month ago a friend of mine was able to acquire me a new mobile phone through his company. So I ask him for a HTC Legend, that was the one that I liked the most. What he finally got me was a HD2, and I remember I was disappointed, I wanted an android phone.
But since I found XDA I am so happy with my HD2 that I actually can't believe it's true.
That's my story about how I stumbled with the best and most vesatile phone on the market. I am a lucky man. Don't you think?
(Sorry for my bad english).

Ive actually been thinking about doing the same thing.
hey guys, getting some errors on my first rom install i did last night so gonna replace my 2gig micro sd card, the one that came free with the phone.
seen this on ebay, any advice recommendations would be very much appreciated
Joyflash 16GB Micro SD HC Card Class 10
£16.99
i would recommend searching as there is litterally hundreds of posts on this
but whilst im here, i wouldnt bother with that
Here is the truth of the matter,
There is no confirmed cards available on the market (potentially AT&T are selling one branded for it but it costs quite a bit and i dont know anyone thats had one)
Second thing, there is no confirmed working cards on the market ( yes repeating was intentional)
The only confirmed card is one that has been tried in a Device and has been proven to work
You have just as much luck getting a card working than one that doesnt however you can increase your chances of getting one that works by sticking to class 2 or 4
im not going in to the details of why... but that is not to say a class 10 wont work, many people have had them working, but it appears that class 2 and 4 have a higher chance of working.
Brand doesnt mean anything, some folk are saying sandisk are the best, however from my point of view this isnt the case as 2 of my cards that dont work are sandisk, inshort it depends on many things which ultimately brings teh whole thing down to luck!
My 16gig Class 2 Sandisk works fine... OS didn't reject it, I get no errors and I get no chugging when viewing sizable video files off the card (1.8gig rip of avatar for instance)...
This is strange as in the same HD2 with the stock WM 6.5 ROM, the card was slow as hell and even populating views for pictures and videos was hell slow...
I ordered a class 6 via eBay so I can diskcopy to the faster card but I'm know its only for my peace of mind...
A class 4 or 6 should do the job but stick to better brands such as Sandisk or Kingston...
WM was crippled by poor driver support, the HD2 at the time of its launch had an amazing graphics potential but we never had drivers, even the XDA ones were only touching the surface of its potential, WP7 uses that potential hence when graphics and video seem more fluid, its a shame, WM is an amazing OS if it only had some TLC, i believe thats why MS has had to lock down the WP7 OS because carriers / HTC / QC screwed WM and the irony was that MS got the blame for it all
whoops sorry posted in wrong thread, your right back on topic!

Not wanting to go too far off topic, I'll say this...
When using an 8gig no-name card I had no troubles with old WM... It only slowed when using the 16gig Class 2 Sandisk...

its luck, i dont think people understand that, perhaps because we all operate on here in a world full of 1's and 0's.
personally i think it just highlights that companys will put on a shelf anything they like of minor but questionable levels of quality
Well peeps...
I am quite unhappy with the Xperia Play...
let me explain..
The xperia x10i was my first Android smart phone & it brought me a lot of joy simply bcos it was an amazing phone, especially after jumping from the Symbian pary.
the first few months were really great, but then the SE antics began..
Really ruined the party for me with super slo-mo update releases and stuff.
Being a fan of the PlayStation series, i really wanted to get my hands on the Xperia Play hoping that the problems with SE are sorted what with bootloaders unlocked & on time updates etc etc.
BUT, the phone itself fails to deliver...
at least am not satisfied with its performance.
i picked up the play & the incredible on the same day... handed the play to the wife so she too can jump on the android bandwagon...
the phone is super sluggish, keeps hanging, apps freeze ending with the phone having no solution but a restart.
i have reinstalled the firmware at least 3 times using repair option AND fresh installs.. also had one update from sony...
the problems just don't go
i was really hopeful of a better phone matching the specs on paper with regular updates...
thoroughly disappointed with the Play & SE...
just wanted to check if am the only user with these concerns & frustrations or am part of a larger 'never SE again' group
You may have a cheap SD card. Mine runs great. I picked up a 16gb card and move all the games and apps to the card through Apps2SD app.
If you have a different brand of SD card to try then try that.
lol.. so the problem could be that Sony gives off crappy memory cards with their devices?
Am currently using the standard box 8gb MMC...
To add, there isn't much of on the card or phone anyways.
Stock apps such as messaging and dialer freeze up...
I have the U.S. version that runs stock Gingerbread and the phone flies...you probably have a bad phone...I'd bring it back or send it back and get a replacement (or as has been suggested), try a new SD card.
My guess is a lot of the instability is due to the sony launcher. You could try something like launcher pro or adw launcher and see how that goes. My Xplay runs smooth, with no crashes or hangs. I don't know if it's because I installed a generic firmware (ie no carrier bloat), or because of the alternate launcher I use.
I had problems with my first play but it wasn't the same problem. After running intensive games the wireless, bluetooth, dual pad and power buttons stops workjng. I have to remove the battery to have it all working again. Rogers replaced my phone yesterday and I am 100percent satisfy with it. It is using the stock memory card. You should try rooting the phone and freezing all the bloatware that is causing all the unnecessary slow downs.

hmm.. the launcher seems to be a valid point.
Swapping the IS memory card with the play's and check if there is a difference on either phone should be good to see..
Haven't had that problem either
Mine is pretty smooth, except for a few rare spots in some games.
Way better than my old OC'd 1.1Ghz Droid running Gingerbread.
Mine was working fine, but started to have problems as i installed a lot of apps. Many of them don't let you move them to the SD.
Now I'm having a problem with the texting/messaging app locking up every time i send one. If i clear off some apps it runs okay. But then I'm forced to get rid of apps I use on a daily basis. This lack of phone storage seems to be the cause of many of the Xperia play's problems.
I might give that app2sd a try, but doesn't that require a rooted phone? I also saw a post here somewhere about moving apps to the sd without root. Might give that a try...
Why the heck did they only put 512MB on the phone? Memory is relatively cheap right now. I don't get it...

I downloaded Apps2SD and it works great for Apps that allow you to move them to the SD card. I think root is required to move apps that aren't suppose to allow you to move them
Apps2SD also alerts/prompts you when an app is movable. So say you install a new app it will tell you right away.
The only thing im disappointed about with the phone, apart from the internal storage as
already mentioned, is the lack of development on xda.
I didnt think this would be an issue lol but I previously owned a hd2 and found this great
Site when I first bought that. So I have only used the hd2 forum until now and was used to
alot more development. So maybe I was a little naive.
Im not moaning as I know the devs are great ppl who cook us some great free gear just gutted
and hoping the play hasnt been forgotten about already as I think this phone could be really
spectacular with a decent custom rom

Just picked up my xplay today and your experience is exactly opposite mine. It's just as spiffy and snappy as the Incredible it's replacing.
Since the xperia arc, neo and play are quite similar it is a waste of dev power to develop for those three at the same time. That would cost precious devving time so to speak. Development is now mainly done on the xperia arc, the flagship of SE's current xperia line and if it's working on the arc it'll be ported to the play and the neo. One could see this with rooting or stuff like flashtool.
In the arc section they're busy working on recovrey modes and costum roms are nearly fully functional I believe (not sure) that should be easely ported to the play. If you want to keep track of the developers development you could try to follow this board: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=965

My SD card came from my Service provider and not Sony.
I agree some of the previous comments, a lot of the lag seems to appear after the internal memory has been used up. Disappointing but there are things you can do as have been previously mentioned.

Very interesting. Most people seem to be having not too many worries with the phone.
But i have now had the phone for over 3 months i guess, so the issues may show.
hope not for you guys..!
and hope mine gets better
After 15 months with my HD2 (99% positive), I have decided to move on. I knew it would come at some time, but I had not expected to move until next year. When AT&T (my carrier since 1992) came out with two Android, LTE-capable phones with better screens, faster processors, etc., I decided it was time to give up on Windows Mobile 6 and try Android. I know a lot of you have already swapped out WM for Android on the HD2, but I stayed with WM because I had a lot of apps that I still used from my old PDA days. Also, the HD2 on AT&T was slow because I could get only Edge/2G speeds. So, it was time to go.
However, my HD2 will remain in use at least for a while. I am not sure yet I can find good Android apps as replacements for some of my WM apps. It still works with WiFi. I have a good PDA now.
Thanks for all the advice I found here. It's been a good experience. Now, I will be over at the HTC Vivid forum.
Good luck to all.
Out of curiosity, what apps do you miss?

I have a genealogy program that is very good. I have not yet found an Android genealogy program that matches it, although I will be testing some. I have a number of books purchased for now obsolete readers (MS Reader, eReader) that I don't want to re-purchase from B&N or Amazon. I use Laridian's PocketBible, but the developer is working on an Android version. I like mapping programs that don't require me to have wireless access all the time. I've got to find Andrioid replacements for a couple of good topo map programs.
I suspect I will find replacements for the programs I use the most, but it will take time. It's an adjustment going to Android after 6-7 years of Windows Mobile programs on PDAs and the HD2.
jealous...i'm stuck with mine til feb.
being a broke (bills are more important than buying a $600 phone every 4 weeks) smartphone owner has caused my unfortunate union to go 2 full years with the most irritating experience 87% of the time.
yeah, sd droid...but becomes useless (on my phone) after a few days. fc is bs!
nand? i have a 2 year w/insurance, not gonna risk it thanks.
I still have a fave5 plan, w/5gb, and unlimited talk/text for the same price as the new 2gb plans w/1000 min talk unlimited text, so month to month is out
as much as i avoided the bubblegum feel of droid and defend wm, this is where i pour gas on the leo and send it to hell.
well, in feb. that is.
pos [email protected] dog phone...
anyway, congrats on bailing the once hoppin' leo forums!
Good luck and have fun and always a broad bandwith with your new device
Thanks Bruce, for what its worth I keep WM installed purely for TomTom, but as I've not opened it in six months, I'm thinking of NANDing it. To the other guy who posted negatively about SD builds, search the SD forum for "motorman evo black blue remix". Its an oldy but a goody. I used it for 8 months with barely ever an FC or a restart (in fact my phone would be on for weeks before I even bothered the restart it manually). I've recently changed to a "Desire Z" build, which is less stable but gives me landscape sense. Anyway, try that first ROM for a few months, I believe it won't disappoint

thank you, i will try it!
i LOVE how my leo behaves w/sd droid (EVERYTHING WORKS SMOOOOOTHLY!!!) so when they go buggy i get overly cranky.
goodness, is wm 6.5 that AWFUL that everything else works flawlessly when 6.5 chokes on the best phone ever made?!?
i am eyeballing the amaze...no early adopting for me, not after this!
Whoops I said motorman, and I meant motoman.
