Hello everybody!
I have a question, and I guess it is not that hard for you to answer.
I want to buy a Android-Phone, perhaps a HTC Desire Z.
One thing that would be important for me, is to stop once and for all the problem of importing and exporting (and merging) contacts. So I would like to use the Gmail-Contacts (I have a lot of adresses and phones already in Gmail-Contacts).
Now my main question is... does HTC-Sense use the Gmail-contacts, or does it only import them? If it does only import them... that doesn't seem so great for my usage... I would have duplicated data... and would have to export and import them in two years and deal with duplicates/merging Contacts if I choose to buy a Milestone 3 for example (because I use Gmail I like to update new email-adresses there, so I defenitly want to update Gmail-contacts too). (I know Gmail-contacts has a feature that does automated merging of duplicates... but that sound a bit scary to me if it messes some hundreds of contacts I have).

I love to hear that it uses the Gmail-contacts... that would be so great, because HTC-Sense sounds good otherwise.
Additional question (not that important thought): If it does use Gmail-contacts I guess I could forget my phone at home, ask someone his phone, log him out, log me in, and I would see all my contacts.
I would appreciate any answers.
Thanks in advance!!
Android uses google sync...the main way to merge your contacts IMO. No worries.
In the future, please direct these kind of questions in an existing thread. There is no reason to create a new thread just for this.

Contacts
I can tell you taht I just built a new computer (which is great: AMD X2 4600, 2GB 800Mhz DDR2) but Activesync and MS Outlook 2000 did not back up any custom fields. This was a huge problem for me. I actually had to copy all my entries in my custom field to a stock field, and it then synced no problem. Just a side note for all of you that want to get creative and make custom fields, DONT. Just use one that exists already! I since upgraded to Office 2003. I think it looks and feels better.

Faria WM6 ROM-Love it!
I have been using Zyb.com for quite some time and it helps me save my contacts with all the related text fields, why dont you try out zyb, they now support smart phones as well.
Hey,
Im somewhat new to this WM6 stuff. I previously had a Sony Ericsson and when I had switched to my new Wing, I had saved all my Contacts to my SIM card and when I went to load my contacts from my SIM onto my PPC, they all look like "Norman/M; Norman/H; Norman/W" or instead of "Norman Kiwan" it would show "Kiwan;Norman" for all my contacts. It gets really annoying and I was hoping maybe some of you found a program I can use to easily edit/change my contacts on my phone... it would be extremely appreciated! thank you.
- Norman
That's quite simple. Space character is not allowed in name string on SIM That's probably why you have a semicolon between the first and the last name. /M or /H are shortcuts for (M)obile or (H)ome phone number. Remember on SIM one number is always one independent record. Just save numbers to Contacts in your phone, then synchronize with Outlook. Amend contacts there and synchronize back.
ok so pretty much use outlook to change the contact's name... just gotta figure out how to do that with outlook.. ill give it a shot.
Now in terms of using MSN messenger, for some reason even if I put in the settings NOT to sync contacts it still does! and its just a huge mess seeing all these phone contacts and email contact everywhere... is there a way to get rid of those too?
thanks for the help!

** bump **
Not syncing contacts means only not syncing contacts when you sync manually. but when you start messenger it syncs contact's automatically.
Contact manager..amzing and easy install
lol
I hate the way contacts are sorted on wm6 too!
Check this one out is pretty good one, actually i love it!

Haven't had problems with contacts ever since my first WM phone ( got used to it quick) but the only problem I ever had was that you couldn't delete multiple contacts at once. Tried to do this for the first time in over a few years and seems like the SIM Manager has had quite an overhaul since I've last tried to use that feature. If it were a Microsoft program I think we would still be having this program.
Thats enough ranting for now
Peace
I'm new to Android, so I don't know if my question is specific to Streak, or a general Android question.
In my Streak contacts, I have both Facebook and Google contacts, many of which I have merged. I've noticed that whichever contact I select first, that is the name of the merged result. If I change the listbox at the top left to my Google mail address or to Facebook, I can see the contacts with their unmerged names.
This kinda makes sense, but took me a while to suss as it's not documented properly.
What I can't do, however, is unmerge. How do I do that? Sometimes the contacts have slightly different names (e.g. Johnathan in FB and John in Google). If I want to choose which is displayed, it would seem I'd have to unmerge somehow, and the remerge selecting the right one first.
The only thing I can think that might work is to delete one of the contacts, then re-sync. I don't want to risk deleting anyone completely though, so if anyone has found a better unmerge method -- let me know!
I got really fed up with three stock contacts app pretty quickly, so I know use phonebook2.0 much better solution and free
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Cheers for that Fards... it seems a very useful app!
sorry guys, i am coming from kaiser forum but hoping for answer as so many here dual boot.
i believe this is a common request but i have not found a good solution.
i dual boot from winmo 6.5 to android and want to sync SMS between them.
contacts are easy through gmail.
i have seen solutions using export csv/xml, some sort of file text string manipulation, then import but all a bit convoluted. i could do this ok for a 1-off transfer.
i do not want to replace either of the databases, only import/merge.
anyone have an easy(ish) answer. must be able to handle folders.
paid for progs are not a problem but free is always nice
Can someone let me know what/where t-mobile's contact sync .apk can be found in a rom (like ice), or maybe post it if it is handy? Loaded up evil's z rom the other day, went into contacts and unchecked sim card contacts from view and only 4 contacts showed up, one of them being myself. Haven't ever gotten around to loading contacts into google yet, this is an obvious reason to do so...would just like to get my contacts back on my phone. Tried to search in the market for it, but the only one I found apparently only works for 1 type of phone. Thanks in advance

I am not sure that will even work as it may rely on Sense and most rom don't have Sense framework only those that has Sense supported so if you even pull the .apk it may not work. But I see you don't trust google I use to be like that and at this point honestly I don't care if they want you they will find you so make your life easy and import it to Google. Now I know TMobile does not have export if you logon line and access it so what you need to do is have rom like stock rom or IG which has it and export it to CSV file and then import it to Google contact under Android.
Yeah, been meaning to clean up my contacts and import it all just hate getting caught with my pants down...so are you talking about the my sense framework or just sense in general? Do you think this is worth posting under evils rom since he ported it and would know the ins and outs and to see what he thinks or do I just need to bite the bullet? Thanks again...
why didnt you just do a contact sync with your gmail? thats what i always do. and it loads on every rom i link my gmail to super quick.

I did have it set up but believe that it only pulls contacts to your phone and doesn't push new ones back-correct me of I am wrong-just wouldn't be syncing my contacts to 2 different places if they both did the same thing...and haven't fully set up contacts in google yet other than emails...it is definitely the way to go...
So after a lot of searching on-line, bt syncing with my old phone, etc., etc.,...finally came upon this
http://yincrash.livejournal.com/188605.html
and it worked as far as Name, Home Mobile Phone, Home Phone, Home Email, Work Mobile Phone, Work Phone...just saved as a csv file and imported to my gmail...am now official thanks for the help
I've been using Ubuntu One Mobile as a back up plan. It has a small monthly fee though.
