I have read over the warnings in the overclocking thread here I just wanted to get some other people thoughts. I was thinking about over clocking my G2 but I don't want to hurt the phone... I do have Best Buys warranty on the phone so how does that affect it? Any thoughts would be great.
Just do it- you'll be fine. Why would you buy a warranty from BestBuy, though...?
Overclocking it does have its ramifications on its life expectancy, due to the heat it'll generate and excessive use. The only real reason to overclock is "Why not?" At it's current state, the phone is fast and already out-performs some of the other phones on the market.
I'm sitting at 1 GHz but really, the marginal difference you'll care to notice is in miliseconds from bench tests. So if you want to, be smart about it's usage and get SetCPU. It'll really help you manage your CPU smartly.

Bought the phone at bestbuy and there warranty plan is much better than T-mobile... I tend to break phones so this time seeing as its a really nice one i wanted to pay for insurance... insurance is what i ment not warranty.... sorry
Ok just about there but have another problem
I got past my last problem the files were just not d/ling so i d/led them onto a pc and tranfered them onto the phone via USB... so i get to the gscript point and cpoc works fine but when i go to run noreboot and oshitttt i get this message... "delete_module vision oc" failed"... I put the vision OC file on the root directory... first folder as it opens not within a folder on the SD card... so i don't get why it is not working?
Please help!

Sorry... like I said I am new and very green with android... how do I do this... I still see the file vision oc or whatever (guessing that's the overclock file you are talking about) on the sdcard after I tried running gscript. I don't know if that means it hasn't been pushed (moved)? To data/local... when I go to astro I see a data folder but it says its empty when I go to it.
Also I don't know which binary file to use the before the ota or after I have the ota insrtalled so I would think I would use the one after ota... but ya not sure. thoughts?

interesting. im not the only one not able to install from the market. beware of the card slot. almost impossible getting the thing out as it will hang on the case on the screen side.

Hopefully someone gets one with some dev skills or just is able to make a custom recovery. Once that happens it's on. I'm wondering if adw launcher can be installed on this thing
I also got one, there's a patch coming tomorrow for the market problem. I can't install apps with APK's in gmail either without a katcher.
It's a sweet device so far. it's resistive touch, I don't think you can turn up sensitivity but we'll see.
ES File Manager comes Pre Loaded.. you can add any app APK to the SD card. and use ES File Manager to install
Installing Quadrant, and some games right now.. I'll post back
I picked this up and I am going to be creating a dev thread on this. I am not an expert on this by any means but I did get it rooted, got Titanium Backup on it (had to install Download Crutch from my SD card than downloaded TB from an APK I found online), and got ADW on it. Runs OK, I don't like the resistive screen and I agree with others that this is a really rigged build on this device. Market issue for me too, can't wait for the update.

Edit: Quadrant got just below the Moto droid according to there results. it was around 300 or so if i remember right. it was just below the Droid. It got good and smooth FPS during the 3D tests. It has the Mali-200 GPU inside with a texture unit rate of 8 units.
Linpack it scored a 3.962 or something but then i closed it. It's charging right now.. Does anyone know why it says I have Edge service and Roaming? as well as Telelco Loco for the service where my phone says T-Mobile. hjaha

Let me first say, CONGRATULATIONS!
At the beginning, forget rooting.
Here is what I did:
1. Mess with all Android settings.
2. Put tons of music, videos, photos, roms, etc, onto memory card.
3. Set ringtone, wallpaper, organize homescreen, and do "basic" customization.
4. Set up Google Voice(most people don't have this as a main step, but I do since I love this app )
5. Download must-have apps(for me gameboid is one), install, and set them up.
6. Sync all accounts, get contacts on the phone.
7. Disable things you will not use, such as the photobucket app.
8. Whatever you want, now you can root
While doing this, I would recommend running the battery from 100% to 0% and using a battery measuring app such as battery left inorder to "calibrate" your battery. Whether this is a myth or fact on whether it improves your battery life, since I see people arguing on this a lot, it can't hurt to do it.
He pretty much covered it.
Just enjoy the phone and have fun with it bro.

Honestly, doing temp root on the G2 is absurdly easy with the VISIONary app (mentioned in that thread).

I am rooted with visionary, but under titanium it does not see my apps to backup...
do i need to do a fix permissions from rom manager?
I come from a world of vibrants, and still trying to figure this HTC out..
unlocked on at&t limted to edge only, makes me sad, but the phone is so nice, it makes me glad...

Have you clicked on the "problems" key in the homepage of Titanium? It's prompt you to download the latest version on busybox, press yes. Also is superuser giving it permission.
I saw that it had busybox, but you are correct, that fixed it... Thanks...
As for waiting for another phone, i cant seem to keep a phone for more then 5 months anyway, i am always changing...

I just got my droid 2 in the mail today and I'm disappointed, to say the least...first off I'm comin over from tmobile where I've had nearly every phone they have released over the last 2 years. The first thing I thought when I booted this droid 2 was how familiar evrything looked. Then I realized they put motoblur on it(boo!). So I feel like I'm using a moto cliq again...I thought that since this thing has a 1 ghz processor it would run a lot smoother than the cliq, but that has not been the case. It takes almost 10 seconds for the camera to open which is unacceptable. It hangs up doing the simplest things, such as opening and closing the app drawer. I planned on getting the droid x, but after reading several side by side comparisons, I decided on the 2. I hate to say this but I'm really thinking I made the wrong choice. I believe this to be a nice piece of hardware, just not right for me....
Anyone have any suggestions to make my experience better? I'm open to rooting but only if there is a 100% fully functional rom out there...my last tmobile phone is a vibrant and I don't know if you guys are aware of what's gone on over in those threads the last few days, but its been interesting to say the least

Hoax...not sure. But there was suddenly a fully functioning 2.2 rom. Its very nice. Working everything. Takes the vibrant to the next level...I wanted to get away from tmobile for a while and as SOON as I commited to verizon, BAM!! But I have 30 days to send this phone back. I probably will. I installed launcherpro and its very smooth, but I don't like to use a 3rd party app to make my phone work the way I think it should...my vibrant is a trooper...

There are a few great ROM's floating around here that are waaaaay better than stock. I'm running Fission (I really like it!) right now but There's a new one by Matt4542 coming soon that's supposed to be AOSP so check 'em out and flash a few and see if you like it with overclock before you take it back.

Sweet! I'm pretty sure that this thing would be a beast overclocked to 1.2! And I remember that its the dam blur launcher that lags, and its dumb! Does wireless tether work on this thing if you root? Without paying the 2o to verizon?...

Um not sure I can't remember what it's like to not be rooted. lol.
I think you either need to be rooted or use ADB.
As for launcher's I've heard good things about LauncherPro but I use ADW. and Home switcher to set my choice to default (so the home soft key doesn't go back to stock.
You can wireless tether for free but as of yet the only infrastructure mode (as opposed to Ad-hoc) you can get is through the Verizon app but thankfully someone found out how to hack it. (check the Droid 2 Information Directory in Android Development for the D2)
Hey guys, so I rooted and bought one of those overclocking apps from the market. I know that quads and linpack mean nothin to some people, but I like to use them to gauge my own phones performance. I overclocked to 1.2 and my benchmark went from 865 ms to 675. My linpack is almost 17. But, my quads are down to 800! What the hell is that about? Are those overclock apps just crap?

Can you at least read data with apps such as Gallery and Astro File Manager? On my Droid Incredible I can copy pictures and ringtones from my computer directly to the internal memory (emmc), but with the Droid 2 I can only mount the SD Card. This is kinda annoying...I've been searching old threads but haven't found an answer.
I can move them between internal and external sd, but that's a freakin headache. On my vibrant when I mount sd to computer, I get two windows that open and I can transfer directly to internal from pc. I can't believe they (motorola) really give you 8 gigs for apps only. Everything is saved to external by default. Except apps.

Are you serious??? Wow, I'm glad I decided to stay with the Dinc as my main phone. So do you use any particular app for moving stuff between internal and the SD card? Or you do it within an adb shell? I don't see the point of making the internal memory only available for apps...I would never need that many space for apps...I rather use it for music.

I use root explorer personally. Just cus it gives me access to everything. I barely use 100mb for apps so I see no reason to have 8 gigs for apps.

That would be awesome....so I overclocked to 1.45 this morning just to see what my battery life would be like and I notice no difference. Im not buyin this overclock app works as advertised. If my minimum is 400 mhz, there would be more battery used when the phone is sleep. That has been the case with every other phone at least.

T-Mobile throttled my speed on my G2 which sucked.... I was exploring the the system files on the device with root explorer and noticed a folder that said throttle and delted it after switching to R/W and my speeds instantly came back. Can someone else try and see if they have the same results my speeds were right around 2mb down before now I'm back around 8-9mb

I'm not sure I believe this... that would be the lamest implementation of throttling I've ever heard of. Dependent on the phone OS? Yuck. They'd have to be genuinely retarded to implement it like this.
I noticed mine came back after a reboot. Went to look for it again and there it was. Data/system/throttle.

This would be incredibly convenient and extremely amusing if it were the case. I deleted the folder in my directory and got pretty much the same crappy speeds that I have at my job (600 down, 100 up). I'll have to wait until I get home for further testing. Hmmm... I'm going to reboot and take a good look at those files. I wonder (assuming these truly are referenced in a data throttle) if the files can be modified so they're not replaced upon reboot?
***Edit*** Opening file /data/system/throttle/698285108 reveals values of

ran a speed test and obtained basically the same results I had before. However, after the test, I checked the directory again and found a new copy of the old file - /data/system/throttle/698285108, which had the value of

When I ran few speed tests after I saw this file and saw significantly lower speeds (300-400 down, 50 up). However, I'm still at work and my signal often fluctuates, so I cannot attest to the validity of these trials. My question is, if this directory is created in the G2 and the MT4G, does it exist in pre-HSPA+ devices? Does the Nexus One see throttling like we do? If not, that could give strength to the theory that throttling is software-based and not necessarily controlled at the data source. If I were T-Mobile, it would make reasonable sense to me to send out a signal (or command if you will) to an individual GSM device once conditions were met (exceeding data limit) that would force the device to throttle down. This raises the idea that the signal would have to be sent again with a reverse command once that billing cycle is completed. Is this practical? We all probably have different billing cycles (unless you're on a business account). I'm just speculating here, so try not to put too much stock into this.
You could try putting a bit of non-recognizable gibberish in there and change its permissions so it can't be overwritten.

Yeah, EDGE/GPRS isnt affected by throttling. In fact, edge becomes much faster of the the two when throttled. Stupid 3G throttled at 60kbps....
Deleting the folder entirely might work.... I know I saw some references to throttling in services.jar when themeing the other day. could unpack the jar and delete them and repack and push.
The data folder is just logging stuff so that wont work. services.jar is what needs to be attacked.
I'm a heavy data user I'm well over the 5 gig data throttling cap check your data usage you might not be throttled, checking back the file was rewritten but with different values. Checked on my vibrant and the folder was not present maybe just in the 4G devices so far.

Also noticed that if your tethering to another mobile device for instance I use my vibrant strictly as a tablet tethered to my G2 they don't notice that your tethering whichis useful if you have multiple devices and want to pay only one data plan.

They claimed deleting it un-throttles data and it regenerates following a reboot.... so, yes they named it throttle and it works. there is more to it that just that folder but its good enough for temp. use...
What in the world would you expect it to be named? Secret folder or some code name, lol? Remember, the security on this phone is so high... I doubt they even thought to try and hide it.

They would have to be in order to delete it from the data folder...
Good news everyone! (lol! I love the professor from Futurama) I found where everything is taking place. In services.jar (system/framework), there are several lines referring to throttling. I gonna see what I can edit out and will need someone is somewhat knowledgeable enough to push the services.jar into their system/framework folder. I would do it myself but I'm not throttled ATM. I will be later this month, I sure so if I have to wait.... I will. Also, when I have it ready... I need the name of your ROM so I can get the correct services.jar. Mine is themed so I doubt mine will match your phone.

I'm beginning to wonder if you where even throttled... 2MB isn't throttled. The throttle speed is 60kbps. Did you get the throttled text message? I know for sure because it happened to me last month. I was at 9-12MB and got the text message. Then was throttled to 60kbps... It disappeared at the beginning of the new bill cycle.

No carrier throttles through the phone anymore. They throttle at the tower if they do at all, so don't worry about it.

I upgraded my PRL today also, but my temp file was made about a week ago and my numbers are different....
I have it as well, updated PRL yesterday to 01115. My numbers are different also but they look like a phone number, mine are 209XXXXXXX. When I started with sprint I lived in the 209 area code!
Another thing I noticed is my file was created at 5:21, after a bit I checked it again and the time had changed!
Not paranoid but maybe this is something like what AT&T did to find the people tethering. Lock Bootloaders coming
another thing, I get my data and calls from Verizon towers. There is one real close to me. Well since yesterday my DATA SUCKS!! I have slow azz speeds, down and up. The thing is I live in the country so the network is not congested here, I always had fast speeds!
I deleted the file and got 1 MB down like before!!! A few minutes later the file came back and my speeds dropped to .3 MB down! WTF!!!!!!
I am running a logcat to try and see what is building the file, but I have to leave fore work soon.
OK If you change permissions to NONE with root explorer it does not effect you. I dont know if it will fix itself though. I seen the file being created via logcat and then my frickin phone rang so I lost the spot!! Dang wife, LOL.
