[Q] Camera flash? - Surround General

I tried to use the camera tonight, and I couldn't get the flash to work on either Automatic or set.
Any advice?

If you have tried it both with it set to auto and on, then I would just swap it out for new one, could be a bad LED.

Camera flash doesn’t turn on?
Using the flash eats up much battery power. To save battery power, the camera disables the flash (even when you have set the camera flash mode to Auto flash or Flash on) when one of the following occurs:
You have an incoming call
The flash will be disabled temporarily when you have an incoming call. After the call ends, you’ll be able to use the flash again.
If you have set the flash to Flash on, it turns back on after you answer and end the call.
Your phone’s battery level reaches 10% or lower
Recharge the battery so that the camera can have enough battery power to use the flash.
Cold weather may lower battery performance which affects the flash
To make sure the camera has enough battery life to power up the flash, keep your phone warm. When not in use, put the phone inside your jacket to keep it warm, and try to avoid sudden temperature changes that may affect battery performance.

Thanks, eltoro, you nailed it.

Extremely Bad Battery Life on the XDAII when the PDA is off

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone else is having the same problems.
When I go to bed I turn the PDA off. The phone is still on.
When I wake about 7 hours later I find the battery is at 60%.
What's the deal? I thought it was supposed to have 150 hour standby life.
I do find something else quite weird. When I turn the PDA off the screen turns off and it all seems fine. I have the button lock turned on so no other buttons will work. After a couple of minutes, if I move the volume slider up or down the PDA will beep. Then if I press any of the buttons such as "Record" "Camera" and "Calander" Nothign seems to happen.
But when I turn the PDA on the "Recoard" "Camera" and "Calander" applications will load.
It is kinda of like it isn't turning off the PDA at all.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong or how to fix it?
Thanks
Cam
if grps is only and bluetooth is on and maybe messenger and or icq is on it drain the batt
GPRS and Bluetooth are both on but GPRS is not connected. And Bluetooth is not connecting to anything.
I don't use messanger.
Would that still be draining the battery that much?
Cam
Cyeoh,
Unfortunately, I know exactly what you are going through. Your phone is entering a mode called 'resuming', it’s a low power state that does not turn on the display, etc, but will respond to hardkeys, volume slider, etc......
I'm guessing your XDA2 goes into 'resume' while trying to find a GSM signal, (are you in a weak area). This is my problem, you can read about it here...
http://www.pocketpcpassion.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38598
As a test, you should turn off the phone, (flight mode) for one night and compare the battery in the morning, (I'm willing to bet is almost the same as when you left it). Alternately install an app that monitors cpu usage, (like the one in the above link), and you probably will see a similar pattern to mine.
The registry solution does help, but causes problems with Bluetooth, (at least it did on my device, nothing a soft reset didn’t fix, but it was VERY annoying)….
If it is your GSM phone, you might want to try using another GSM SIM card from another provider, (maybe a friends) and see if you get better results. When I switched to a better provider I got an increase of 10% on the battery, (not great but something!)
Thank You very much.
That does answer a lot. I do have very bad reception at home. I guess this may mean I need to leave it charging over night. However I do find the XDA does charge very quickly which mean in the time it takes me to get ready for work it is back up to 93%.
I will put it into Flight mode tonight to see what happens.
It's still a little bit ****ty and it seems to be because of software. Hopefully they will fix it in the next ROM update.
Thanks
Cam
How did you go with your test last night cyeoh, did your battery last a little longer?
I'm intrested to know as when I charge my battery over night in the morning its still is not on 100% untill I do a soft reset or disable and enable flight mode then it pops up to 100% and stops charging... yet a nother feature of some software I've installed or the ROM version at the moment!!!

Battery Power Saving Tricks Listing

I am trying to compile a large list of tips and tricks that we users can use to extend the life of our small batteries.
List is here:
http://android-simplicity.blogspot.com/2009/08/bag-of-tricks-1-increase-battery-life.html
On-Going Power saving List
1. Under-clock your cpu(for root users only). Download->over clocking widget->set cpu speed to lowest value
2. Turn off GPS
3. Reduce the number of start up apps
4. Restart phone
5. Lower screen brightness
6. Turn off Wi-fi when you are not around any wifi networks
7. Turn off 3G Mobile Data Network - Settings--->Wireless Controls--->Mobile Networks and check the box that says "Use Only 2G Networks.
8. Disable auto Data Sync
9. Download and install "Power Manager"
10. Disable back ground apps - [~JDBDogg]
11. Turn off keyboard backlight (for Dream/G1 only for obvious reasons) with Backlight Off app. Only works on rooted phones. [~Chahk]
12. Turn off any unnecessary noises or vibrations, such as for on-screen keyboard and games. [~AdamPI]
13. Make sure your firmware and apps are up to date, efficiency may be improved. [~AdamPI]
14. Use headphones. [~AdamPI]
15. Turn off Bluetooth. [~AdamPI]
16. [~Yours goes here]
If you have any tricks that you use to get the most time juice out of your phone, please share them to the rest of us. Thanks.
Disable background apps
Turn off keyboard backlight (for Dream/G1 only for obvious reasons) with Backlight Off app. Only works on rooted phones.

nice, one ! didnt think of that~
Lower the time it takes for the screen to time out.
Id also say take off any widgets you may have but i guess that falls underneath the "disable background apps" category
Bluetooth isn't mentioned.
Turn off any unnecessary noises or vibrations, such as for on-screen keyboard and games.
Make sure your firmware and apps are up to date, efficiency may be improved.
I'd guess using headphones is better than the speaker, plus no-one on the bus wants to hear your "music".
Has anyone tested decoding efficiency of video and audio codecs? AAC saves space, but does it use more battery than mp3?
up to 15

Now thats thinking out of the box. Thanks AdamPI
We have now 15 on the list. Lets see how long this can go~
Someone should do a test using all of these tricks and do a comparison, although it will be a very boring phone at this point with everything off.
Don't use a ROM that requires a linux-swap Partition
This causes the phone to die faster because the sd card is constantly being acessed

SD Cards are so cheap these days that you shoudn't worry about damaging them. In a weird way though, this advice does make sense. Swap = more apps are being kept in memory, thus more work being performed by the phone, which translates to higher power consumption.
But then again, following this logic a similar advice would be to not run any apps at all. Or better yet, just shut your phone off! Maybe then it will last a full day on a single charge
Seriously though, if you're worried about damaging your phone, read up on Lithium-Ion/Polymer batteries and how to prolong their lifespan. The main points are:
Don't let them get too hot. Heat damages battery cells and cause them to lose their capacity.
Deep discharge cycles (letting the battery drain before fully charging them) kill these batteries fast. LiIon/LiPolymer batteries like to be "topped off" once the level gets to 60-70% mark.
Discharge cycles can improve state-of-charge estimation, so only perform those when the battery meter goes out of whack and doesn't tell the charge level properly. This doesn't happen often.
They don't suffer from the "memory" and overcharge issues that used to plague batteries using older technologies (NiCad/NiMH), so it's safe to keep the phone plugged in whenever you can.
The "first-time cycle" is a myth left over from Nickel-based batteries. This means you don't need to charge the batter for 8 hours the first time you use it.
Do not use "fast chargers" since their usage can decrease the lifespan of the battery.
Get an app that turns off your data network completely (like WiSyncPlus). Not just "use 2G only" but COMPLETELY. I can go a whole weekend, with normal use, without charging my phone if I need to. (From one Fri 6am to Sun 6pm give or take was my best)
The one I use (WiSyncPlus, there are others I guess) turns off the network automatically when I unplug the charger from my phone. Txt msgs piggy back the cellular network so no issue there, otherwise, if I want to jump on the internet or check the weather, I hit the toggle switch on my Home screen...in ~3secs I'm all set again. Toggle back off when finished.
Best $3 by far I've spent on an app for my G1.
i use APNdroid for that
No one mentioned using a ROM that allows changes to the CPU scaling.
I'm on Cyanogen 4.1.2.1 and I have it scaled from 245 to 527 with the CPU only jumping up to the next clock speed when it needs it.
So, most of the time, my phone is on 245 and it clocks to 383 and then 527 as needed. I had overclock widget set so it showed me the current clock speed. Once I was comfortable with the frequency and load under which it changed speeds, I removed the widget from the desktop.
I use my phone a lot and it lasts a full day easily.
if youre using a hero rom there is an option to completely turn off mobile networks so there is no data connecion at all.
i have to go with
turn the phone off
get a car charger
spare battery or extended one

Flash disabled with low battery power.

Is this normal? I was on about 19% and it refused to enter the camera app, giving an error. A soft reset fixed this but the flash refused to start but is now working normally following a charge. Was this an intermittent fault or normal?
Cheers.
Yeah, this is normal, using the flash with the battery power that low is a bad idea for the battery, can cause an abnormal discharge I believe.
This is normal. The limit they made is 20/100 for battery. After that flash light is grayed out.

Unable to activate flash when taking photo [Problem solved]

This is just weird, i have been using the flash while taking photo, but today i was unable to activate flash light. I can press on the 'flash button' but it won't change into auto mode or on mode. Any suggestion?
This seems to resolve itself now. The only thing i can think of is because of low battery. The battery was around 15 % when it happened. i charged my phone 5 mins ago and it is at 21% and the flash is working again.
it looks like it auto prevent the use of flash light to save some battery when it is running low.

Cure for battery drain in CM7

Hey guys just like we all i suffered from the insane battery drain in CM7 with my lovely Vibrant. But yesterday night i found a cure that gives me now great battery life - almost like a 2.2 rom.
What i did?
I googled around and found this post:
1. Open up the dialpad, and type:
*#*#4636#*#*
(the numbers are for 'info'; don't press call, it should automatically go to a 'Testing' menu)
2. Go into 'Phone information'
3. Press Menu, and select 'Select radio band' (this will result in a force close, but that's what we want.. just keep going.)
4. Go back into 'Phone information' and scroll down to the bottom'. It will probably still say 'CDMA auto (PRL)', but the problem is this is probably a visual glitch. Or it might say 'Unknown'. Either way, switch it to something else, then switch it back to 'CDMA auto (PRL)'. Then you can turn off the radio and turn it back on with the button right underneath that.
5. At this point, the fix has been applied, but it would be a good idea to clear the battery stats to get a fresh start. So boot into recovery and do that, then reboot. The fix *should* stick after this reboot, but I think it didn't when I first did it. But assuming it does, then you're golden. It will be like this for all other reboots. If it does not, then just do it again. You can tell if it worked if when you go into battery usage, and go into cell standby, the TWS% is much lower. I charged mine completely overnight after applying this fix and have been off the charger now for over a half hour and TWS% is still at 0% (even though cell standby is at 46% (but that's not a problem at all..), and my battery is still at 100%
My Vibrant gives me now GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) as network type.
So let me know whether it works for you too or not.
For me its asesome, since i can enjoy CM7 all day long ;-)
Seems to be working fine for me, would I have to do this for every nightly.

great find +1 the battery life of cm7 drove me away to a JVQ rom but imma try this find and use it!
I don't know if the cure will work for me, too. I found out that my device doesn't enter deep sleep, so even when I'm thinking it's sleeping, it is not.
The process Android System keeps it awaken. At least it did in #54 and other recent builds. It completly depletes my battery like me drinking lemonade.
Does it sleep for you?
I like this. I can actually stream music while charging without slowly losing charge.
I'm going to try this and see what happens
Hope this gets run through Atinm.

I hope this works, but when i first went to phone info and did radio band, it asked for country, i choose usa, it didnt FC thou, then when my setting was already GSM/CDMA (prl) . I will report back tommorow how it goes. thanks
I'm guessing the same would apply to MIUI?
It definitely seems to be doing something. My signal hasn't dropped below the full four bars yet, which is weird considering it's normally around 1 or 2. The phone also seems to go to sleep faster, but that could be placebo.

didnt get Force closed at the select radio band. Now what should I do?
on Miui I had to select Turn Radio Off first, then it forced closed and now it seems to stick when I change radio bands. Just turn on/off radio a few times and it should help.

Thanks! Finally I got it to force closed and I did everything else. But I went into cell standby I saw my TWS% is 71 when my cell standby is only 21%. Is that a problem?

Effect of USB Charging on CPU Idle Utilization CM7
First, this test was performed on nightly #55 with KB5 baseband. I have performed this on KA7 as well and found the results to be similar.
I am very sensitive to my battery utilization. In turn, I am also a very frequent charger. Even if I'm at 80%, I feel I must plug my phone in as soon as possible. Because of this, there is hardly a time where my phone is on during a session in which it had never been on usb. This changed, however, this last weekend. I was playing around with KA7 vs KB5, and was away from my computer and charger. Later, when I reviewed my cpu utilization during idle time, I was shocked to see that the phone was just sipping the battery. Less than 1% utilization in System panel.
My initial reaction was "KA7 is amazing." However, the next morning, battery usage appeared to be the same as normal. On a hunch, I wondered if it was possible that it was the charging that is causing issue. As we all know, when the phone is plugged in, cpu utilization is fairly high (~30%), and some even report the battery getting hot (in some cases, even to reboot the phone). But -- is it possible that even after you unplug, there is some lingering "stuff" happening that will not go away, regardless of how long you idle?
What I did was simply charge my phone fully, unplug, reboot. I consistently find that my phone will go in and out of very low cpu utilzation state when I do this. If I go into airplane mode, I will even see full sleep state with no green bars in System panel (not that I would do this, as I like to USE my phone).
I am very curious if some of you may be able to try this experiment and report back. If this is confirmed, I wonder if there may be a way to determine what is getting stuck and robbing our cpu cycles after the phone is unplugged from charging.
Attached are four screenshots:
syspanel_pre_reboot_8hr.jpg: showcasing the long overnight charge, followed by very low activity, yet with >3% cpu utilization while idle. (by wall charge, though this has shown to be the case via computer usb charging as well)
syspanel_pre_reboot_2hr.jpg: a closer look at the idle time after the charge.
syspanel_post_reboot_8hr.jpg: A big picture view of the charging, the reboot, and the subsequent idle time. The first thing I did once the phone booted was download and install several app updates from market. I wanted to stress the phone before letting it fall back to idle.
syspanel_post_reboot_2hr.jpg: here you can see the lower idle cpu utilization on the phone. Initially there is activity as I updated apps from the market, and then it fell to hover around ~1%.
This behavior can be replicated and repeated on my phone every time. I was hoping someone with logcat experience may be able to help me define a filter so that we can see exactly what processes plugging the phone into usb starts, compared to which it terminates when unplugged. If we were to find this, I would suspect it could be added to the code itself.
THAT is what I'm experiencing TOO.
I have tried that fix. When entering the "select radio band" it doesn't force close. I just see "EURO Band" , "USA Band" etc...
also on the bottom it says "GSM only".
Is the fox already applied for me?
I'm using TRIGGER (CM7 based).
