VERY close to buying but ... - Galaxy S I9000 General

I am very close to buying a Galaxy S here in the UK but I wonder if there will be a version with LED flash coming any time soon as this is the only thing that lets the GS down for me.
I see the Samsung Mesmerize has LED flash and this is essentially the same phone. Any chance of us seeing something like this in the UK in the near future?

Night Mode gives result better than flash, search for it for examples!
Flash was also a restraint for me at first, but no more after seeing the results!

Thanks, I understand the GS has good low light camera performance but I shold have mentioned I want the LED flash not for taking pictures but for use as a torch
I find the LED very useful as a torch on my current phone as it is always with me and I fear I would miss this on the GS.

This problem can be solved too: just get a torch-app which sets the amoled screen to maximum brightness and you will have a really good torch without a ledflash

Yeah, not as good as the dedicatd LED but I guess it's an option...
Would prefer the LED though and was kinda hoping the rumoured Nexus Two would bring it but it seems we're not going to see that any time soon.

If you are basing the decision to buy a new phone on whether or not it has an LED flash or not I dont think your looking at the right device regardless...

Maglight with the LED bulbs are fantastic. The plus too is that if you buy the "C" battery version (the "D" version is way too heavy) and are out for a walk and happen to get attacked, you can slug the attacker and you won't permanently harm them. I keep one in my car at all times! Try doing that with a i9000!
Seriously though, the samoled screen set to white at full brightness can comfortably light up a 10x10 room.

Well he does have a point. Basing a pretty big purchase decision and commitment on if the phone works well as a flashlight does seem VERY strange.
You could really buy a penny led flashlight if lighting really is important.

This is TOTALLY not the point!
I use a 5800 currently and the LED is very useful in all manner of situations. I am not necessarily basing my decision on whether than phone has a LED for use as a flashlight, as per my earlier post I am merely pointing out that I would miss it having been used to it and see no reason why it was left out.
IF there is to be a model launched here in the UK that incorporates the LED (as is available elsewhere) it would better suit my requirements and would be almost the perfect phone for me. The fact the GS does not have a LED does not mean I won't buy it but if one is coming with this added then I would prefer to buy that.
Does that clear things up?

Exactly. To base the decision to purchase a $500.00 "Mini Computer / Cellular Phone" on whether it has an LED on it (not even to use as a proper Camera flash but for a flashlight) is not the best course of action in my opinion.

Right... I get it... I meant no disrespect (I am after all a Canadian lol) but from the first few posts of the thread it seemed that you were in need of a phone that can double as an led flashlight.
I understand your point. I honestly do not know if Samsung will be releasing an SGS device with a flash on it anytime soon but the Galaxy Tab has one...

Sorry, I was guessing what yiannisthegreek was trying to get at. In any case, you can look into getting the Samsung Wave if you want the flash and the phone itself is much cheaper too.

don't know if UK will have the Continuum, this device has a flash led, released nov 11th in US
As for the GT-i9000, it simply doesn't!

buy the phone bro, you'll forget about it not having an LED. Best phone I ever got...

Try taking a picture when it's close to completely dark...the Galaxy S should have both night and a flash...even better dual Xenon ones.

Keep the trackball light on?

I've seen a few of my friends with Sprint Heroes, and their trackball remains on during use. Mine just seems to flash when I get a text or a phone call. Does anyone know of a way to have it turn on when I'm using it? I like the effect it gives the phone.
And to be quite honest, if I had a choice, I'd pick the Sprint Hero over the droid eris because of the tactile menu buttons and larger trackball.

Since no one cares about my opinion, I'm happy to say no one really cares about yours.
On another note, does anyone know why this feature has been disabled on the Eris? Could rooting re-enable the feature. I know it was never enabled on the Eris, but still.

i don't think so
even the the Eris and Hero are almost identical phones on separate carriers, the lighting of the trackball has different functions on the Eris as it does on the Hero. i don't think a root will make any difference
as to tdavis' response, part of it is probably because the OP decided to state that opinion in an Eris forum. if he wanted to talk about his love for the Hero, there is a better place for that than here

im sure the actual setting in the kernel which lights the trackball can be turned to on or off right. lol so i dont see why adding a setting in userspace(settings.apk) wouldnt be impossible
I'm sure with root you can change how the trackball light works
by the way, I agree that we need actual buttons instead of these touch sensitive ones we have, but still I'd keep the Eris because the Sprint Hero is a little to chunky for me

No, he has an Eris and wants a Hero feature. Nobody in the Hero forums would've helped him. I'd like that feature myself.
ANYTHING is possible with root. I for one am going to turn my phone into a time machine as soon as I get root I believe I would like to have the light on while I'm travelling through time so I'll be back here when we have root for sure!
Anything the hardware does should be able to be reverse engineered when we get root. Simple enough.
Anything the hardware DOES NOT DO (such as time machine, GSM calls, etc) won't be able to be done. Although, I do want a time machine

If you were thinking anout getting N1.. DO IT!

I just switched from touch pro 2 and let me tell you... There is no comparison. I had TP2 for a year and almost everytime I had to do something fast, look something up or do somehing more complicated than calling - it would fail me. It led to a constant feeling of doubt and being unsure if it will just freeze when I need it the most.
N1 is freaking fast. Everything on it JUST WORKS. There is no guessing, like on TP2 - "omg I hope this launches.. I hope I don't have to soft reset.." - everything is integrated, every transition happens in a snap, every task you throw at it is handled immediatly and with style. It's a reliable life partner.
If you are undecided like I was a week ago about switching to N1, do it - you'll wish u've done it sooner.
Android FTW.

Yes, I was pretty undecided up until now. I have a SE X1 and really, I know what you're talking about when you mention "doubt". I just hate the thing and WM makes it a nightmare. When I got my X1 I was thinking of keeping the phone for a long time, I wasn't expecting a $900 phone to turn out to be complete crap both hardware wise (flimsy, crappy keyboard, crappy paint, etc.) and software wise (WM!!!). Hopefully, I can use the N1 for a longer time with the updates and all...
I guess I'll be getting it now for sure, the only thing left to decide is whether or not it's worth it to wait the extra time to have it engraved...ha!

Dude, be VERY careful about the engraving.
Read the warranty policy - if you engrave it, it becomes a non-refundable phone that can only be sent in for repairs, if needed. Also, think if you'll want to sell it in a year or two.. nobody wants your "My name is John and I have a 12" tool" engraving.
Not that it's a bad service, just make sure you consider that.

I'm thinking that if I do want some "engraving" on it, I could get away with a transparent acid-sticker of a sort.. at least that I can remove and sell/return if need arises.
Although only death can separate me form my N1 at this point.
If Adobe would hurry and release the fully gpu accelerated flash player for this phone, I'd give it a 10 out of 10.
Seriously! The ipad / iphone guys are crying so hard about wanting html 5 everywhere because they're not allowed to have flash.. I worry that Adobe's missed the boat on this one.
Not a single developer leaking the gpu flash 10 player for android either..

I do agree with your assessment about Samsung.....as far as software is concerned, but I have to say that the hardware and or manufacturer that Samsung uses is FAR superior to that of HTC. I came from an Instinct before the Hero. It was absolutely the worst software ever introduced on a phone but it was also the best hardware that I have seen to this day. Combine that with the upgraded tech inside and Android for the OS it really cant be bad. Then again, after the Instinct, I swore that there would never be another Samsung in my pocket. lol I'll probably keep to that promise.
While i agree that sammy's suck.. this looks to be a great play for sprint.. the more hi-end androids the better.. maybe they can steal some thunder from verizon and their onslaught of droids..
If sprint will market these hi-end androids against verizon and att showing that the plans are way better.. etc.. and do it right..maybe sprint can gain some some customers etc..
Take dan off the air.. bring back the pin drop guy from way back.. then promote the hell outta the plans and phones.. lol sure fire win in my book.. or just show some t & a holding the evo etc..lol
My fiance has the moment and I do kinda like theslide out keyboard, nice for the terminal apps and stuff. Also nice when you dont feel like swyping or typing on the virtual kb.

So, I know that my launch N1 has more days behind it than ahead. I love the phone, but know that something will be out soon for me with a keyboard. I really just wanted to say that I wish manufacturers would keep the trackball w/ notification colors going. I've really come to depend on it as of late. A simple, genius idea that should continue.

Exactly. But Google will probably release a new dev phone for the next Gen ... 2 gigahertz processing and after gingerbread.
There will always be a Dev phone, hopefully next time (not that im regretting) Google wont skimp on the true multitouch and the other minor-ish issues with the NExus ONe.
I will be getting another phone in the next 6 months; the urge to upgrade is just too hard to resist. But I will miss the trackball color notifications.
A notification LED that can be set in the same way and an optical trackpad would do. Not quite as good since I would not be able to see it across the room, but I could work with it.
Ugh..I feel the same.
None of the prospective power phones have them either. Does anyone know if the recent slab of Android phones at least has RGB LEDs somewhere on the face ?
What annoys me is that the 4+ inch phones are starting to skip on trackpads alltogether. Very very disconcerting.

Seeing as this is the first time the thin 10.1 has been in public with a working OS, it is probably still an unpolished version. There were a few times when it didn't seem that responsive (could be with the way the person was using it) but hopefully, whatever quirks, laginess etc is in the device can be ironed out by the time it is released publicly.
