Keep the trackball light on? - Droid Eris Android Development

I've seen a few of my friends with Sprint Heroes, and their trackball remains on during use. Mine just seems to flash when I get a text or a phone call. Does anyone know of a way to have it turn on when I'm using it? I like the effect it gives the phone.
And to be quite honest, if I had a choice, I'd pick the Sprint Hero over the droid eris because of the tactile menu buttons and larger trackball.

I don't know how I offended you, but okay.
Since no one cares about my opinion, I'm happy to say no one really cares about yours.
On another note, does anyone know why this feature has been disabled on the Eris? Could rooting re-enable the feature. I know it was never enabled on the Eris, but still.

i don't think so
even the the Eris and Hero are almost identical phones on separate carriers, the lighting of the trackball has different functions on the Eris as it does on the Hero. i don't think a root will make any difference
as to tdavis' response, part of it is probably because the OP decided to state that opinion in an Eris forum. if he wanted to talk about his love for the Hero, there is a better place for that than here

im sure the actual setting in the kernel which lights the trackball can be turned to on or off right. lol so i dont see why adding a setting in userspace(settings.apk) wouldnt be impossible

I'm sure with root you can change how the trackball light works
by the way, I agree that we need actual buttons instead of these touch sensitive ones we have, but still I'd keep the Eris because the Sprint Hero is a little to chunky for me

No, he has an Eris and wants a Hero feature. Nobody in the Hero forums would've helped him. I'd like that feature myself.

ANYTHING is possible with root. I for one am going to turn my phone into a time machine as soon as I get root I believe I would like to have the light on while I'm travelling through time so I'll be back here when we have root for sure!

Anything the hardware does should be able to be reverse engineered when we get root. Simple enough.
Anything the hardware DOES NOT DO (such as time machine, GSM calls, etc) won't be able to be done. Although, I do want a time machine

Starting to regret buying a nexus one

I know I shouldn't post this here just wanted the devs to maybe respond so we know what is holding up the fun.
I am not a jerk but what happen to the nexus one. We are constantly seeing devs going back to the g1 porting tons of new items into the roms while my nexus is still using the same old same old.
what happened to the fm radio for desire? bluetooth to work on desire? sony x10 roms? etc etc?
all i see lately is a bunch of modded kernels that all seem to be tampering with the processor way too much.
I am just starting to feel like my 500.00 phone was a waste to root.
thanks to all that have done great things for nexus, just kinda was expecting a little more.

so you expected the devs to make your phone worth $500? thats not cool.
also in case you haven't noticed the n1 runs 2.1 which is causing problems for ports which ran 1.5 or 1.6.
You are going to have to wait for a dev to get a desire to get the info needed to get the bluetooth or radio working. And that is assuming they are exactly the same which they probably aren't.
And as you stated above this doesn't belong here. It should be in the general section.
Really?
People keep porting stuff to the G1 because there are a ton of people that have that phone... and it still kinda sucks. I used either a G1 or a MT3G for the last 10 months. Now that I switched to the N1 I feel like everything just works the way I always wanted it to on the G1/MT3G. What more do you need?
The Desire ROMs are better than ANY port to the G1. Yeah there is a thing or two that isn't perfect, but WTF, man. It's damn good.
Cyanogen is near perfection. I keep toying with it trying to find **** wrong with it and... nothing. Obviously there's some cool stuff out there but why don't you buy some time looking for the coolest apps you can find. Use your phone... don't tool with it.

I didn't want a Desire I wanted to buy the next highly supported phone by the Rom community.
I am not *****ing I am simply asking what is causing the dry spell.
Is there something the Devs know about a new powerhouse tmobile phone around the corner so they dont want to waste time or updates coming that change everything soon.
I am not bashing so please everyone stop being negitive.
Seriously? The day I bought my HTC Tilt 1, I hard-spled it, and put in a custom rom. Why? Because I got it almost a year after it came out, and the stock os was slow as heck, and custom roms were always better and faster and so on and so forth.
The G1 has been out for over a year and a half. The nexus has been out for 3-4 months. There is a LOT more known about the workings of the g1 than the nexus, there are a LOT more people with a g1 vs a nexus, and so on and so forth. If you wanted a g1, you should've gotten a g1.
I bought a nexus, and I haven't rooted it/unlocked the bootloader or any of that. I haven't felt the need to - Stock, the phone performs light years ahead of any prev. phone I've owned, and I see no reason in rooting it that would add something I don't already have (that I need). It looks good, it works well, it's fast... it has even converted me to using a touchscreen keyboard (in both landscape and portrait) with no regrets whatsoever.
My advice: Give it time, and be patient. Either that, or learn to code and hack roms, and do it yourself. No need to be ungrateful towards those who ARE working towards what you feel they should have done already.
I know what you mean. I'm still waiting for Cyanogen to make my Nexus shoot lasers...
Honestly , I would have to agree with you man. I was led to believe that the potential was going to be endless with this power house we all have bu , the only thing that has REALLY come out of rooting that was good is the wifi tether and USB tether. Everything else is pretty much stock.

Um did I ever say I was ungreatful?
I had a G1 as I stated.
Dude, you can't compare a port to a phone with less than half the specs to having the real thing.
The g1 is like a pitbull, big and meaty but slow as hell. Nexus is like a grayhound, fast as hell but you can still do a bit to improve.
I for one am happy I upgraded. This is just one of those times you should have kept your mouth shut. (or fingers as it is)
Well, the saying goes...if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself.
Dont take what he said literally, It did sound like you just bought the phone hoping the Devs would take care of you and make your buy worth it. They are all doing what they can with whatever resource available for them.
You might think the Devs are slacking coz they still havent fixed the bluetooth/FM radio problem, but incase you havent noticed these ROMs are still in the Alpha and Beta stages, and they are called that for a reason. Come on man, you dont expect the Devs to perfect a ROM from a phone that hasnt even come out yet, or just came out?!
The G1 has more development, thats because it started as CUPCAKE, a lot more updates came after that, so a lot of stuff for the Devs to play with... But even with the best possible ROM you can flash in the G1 it will never compare to the Nexus! not even a stock Nexus.
P.S. I'd be glad to trade you my G1 for your N1. Just holler

No offense but this phone was only released barely 4 months ago. I think it may be a little unrealistic to expect certain hacks to be perfected already. You should try excercising little patience and enjoy your phone for what it is, a great piece of technology. I am running Cyanogenmod 5.0.6 test3 and I am loving it! Go check out the Magic forum and talk to some of the people who have a Rogers Magic or Magic+, I was one of them and they still don't even have root! How about the iPhone 3GS with the latest fixed bootrom? That may help you appreciate the simple things that the N1 offers(Unlockable bootloader out of the box sans warranty). I am sure people are hard at work on features you may want but I am sure these devs are prioritizing what they feel is most important and that may not agree with what you think is priority. Enjoy your phone becuase it is a great phone, if not sell it ebay you can probably get a good return on it.
LoL. Patience, My Young Padawan.

Well what were you expecting??? Sounds like you were just dead wrong on what to expect.
Root doesn't give much to the g1 as well, it just enables you to access /system/ and su permissions. One can say that the g1 needed to have a **** load of tweaks to make it run better, while the nexus is just an updated and better optimized phone.
You can't even compare running 2.1 on a g1 with that on a nexus.

Does anyone else here feel... empty?

Most of our devs are gone. They've run off to the Evo portal and ebayed their Heroes. In turn, people bought their Heroes on Ebay and we will have a flood of noobs coming. We probably won't have a rom update from a major dev ever again, and... it makes me feel empty inside.
Darch is still here, Regaw is still here. Not sure who else is.
Toast and flipz have said hero dev will continue, just slow. I think jschi didn't jump ship either. And he is a genius

Heh. Look at the bright side: now other people can take over the reigns; and trust me, some people here are more than capable at doing so.
Don't feel empty, but I am a little upset with HTC. They've pretty much made us dependent on the developers here. I would be fine with stock roms, but it's pretty clear that HTC is pretty much done supporting the Hero. 2.1 is it and the update comes with its own issues that weren't in 1.5.
I got an Android phone with the assumption that it would be supported with the latest updates at a faster pace and for much longer than what I'm seeing by HTC. It makes it pointless to ever do another contract if I'm going to be stuck with a phone that won't get regular updates from the manufacturer. I'm not sure if I would get another HTC phone. I hope Sprint gets the Nexus One.

The Hero is sort of the unwanted stepchild of XDA now. But, all the first-time Ebay adopters are coming to our "rescue".
I cant do what flipz, damage and darch do. Just naming top 3 roms.
But i can put things together and fix broken things. Ill be stuck with my hero for quite some time. So im always willing to collaborate with others to get something working.
Also im sure we could ask a few questions here and there to the main devs for advice and help. No matter what phone they currently use.
I think we have almost everything we can think of, OC, roms, JIT, themes etc.. I think that covers all the big breakthroughs for are hardware restricted phones. But we can always improve on them, many here are capable. So yeah it sucks these big names left but im honestly not worried about the future of the CDMA hero.
Save up and buy an evo.
This is just how the phone loop rolls, once theres something better , you don't go back.
I will be keeping my hero, but yeah look at it this way , XDA devs are not the only ones dumping the phone , so is sprint.

It does have "full root" but the storage has nand locked/protected. It's like that little switch on and SD card or floppy to protect it only its software not hardware theyll break it in a week or two. You can pull apks in recovery... and WiFi tether needs a netfilter kernel so give em a week and it will work.

g2 root--impossible?

i don't even have a g2 and in no way intend to disrespect any of the hard working devs. but, how many people are pissed off that there is no root yet? not pissed at the devs, but at the measures htc has taken to lock us out. maybe it really is a bug in the chip. what if it never gets rooted? how many people would be extremely mad and sell their g2? like i stated, i don't even own one,but have been into the scene for quite a few years. so i read the g2 thinktank everyday. part of me is always hoping i'll see that it was permanently rooted. but it just doesn't look good. i check everyday because i'll eventually be upgrading my phone soon. and i'd like to rest assured that if these measures are taken on future phones, that the devs will know how to hack it sooner.
anyone think it's never gonna happen? i hope it does. i'm just not used to seeing this being such a huge problem.
It will happen. Give it time. The world was not built in a day.
The phone is still very good even though it isn't rooted yet, and will become a better phone when it is.
I'm pretty much like you, I check the root thread multiple times a day. I really respect those guys.

People said this same thing about the cat and mouse games on the iPhones, Droid X, etc... See how long those lasted? A few weeks? A few months?
History has shown, given the time and determination, there is no consumer cell phone that cannot be hacked.
I hate that they lock us out of our devices, but they are appliances. This happens in the business world all the time. They do it to 'improve' the device by not allowing you to muff it up.
Either way, we will crack the protection mechanisms, or find overflow exploits, etc... to make it happen.
give it time. anything and everything can be cracked with enough time. plus temp root via visionary works great. We truly only need prem root for custom roms and themes

Honestly, 80% of what CyanogenMod brings (aside from bugfixes and optimizations) can be accomplished with full root access to the system.
I think at least some of the Devs see this as a direct challenge to their authority. This is the G2 after all. Root will happen. Droid X comparison is apples and oranges, this is the sequel to the first android device ever! This is where we make our stand or all is lost.
Having stated the above I think HTC, G, and maybe even T-mo are watching this device. Maybe its just to slow down the Devs long enough to push 3.0 . G may try with 3.0 to stop Android fragmentation by offering a huge leap forward. I mean the G1 to G2 jump is mind blowing to me and it seems like a gift to us early adoptors of Android, I want root but the G2 is stunning to me even stock. Just thinking outloud.

People are seriously tripping here. If Android can be ported to the HD2 of all devices, then the G2 can get rooted. Even if it doesn't big deal, it may just be me, but this is the first time I've been satisfied with a phones performance on the stock rom. Its faster and more consistent than any phone I've owned.

Ahh, my bad. Thank you, I don't think I ever heard this news. Must have been pretty hush-hush stuff.

This is the truth. I sat and thought hard about what really made me put CM6 on my G1 .. i came to the conclusion that my g1 just wasnt up to par with all of the newer androids. but now i am completely happy with my G2 even on stock. therefore i dont mind waiting for root or if it even happens.
I'm nervous.

Thinking about trading my DX for a DInc?

any reason i shouldn't?
LOL how ironic.
I have a DINC and thanks to its unlocked bootloader I am able to use it freely 100% on my network.
And on the other end, I am eagerly waiting for a miracle for someone to crack DX's bootloader so I can program it and have all its features such as EVDO.
It's a very good phone and don't blame you wanting a change, but nothing can beat that beautiful 4.3'' and HDMI port.
Just my 2 cents.
I was on the fence too. Theres a lot I like about both phones. The Inc has worse battery life and there are always the pro/cons of the smaller size.

i can just buy the same size battery as the DX and solve that problem.
and what about that processor on the dx? i couldnt imagine leaving that behind
I read that while the omap is speedier, they are definitely comparable.
How easy is it to restore a droid inc? Rsd lite for the droid x is the easiest thing ever..

Does the inc have a magnetometer? If not would the new google maps work with it?

any particular reason you are getting the Dinc? I mean over the X? I know that I was all worked up about "the bootloader" and no "real custom roms" and no "custom kernels", so I got the D1 (I know--not the same as the Dinc).
What I found out is that all that stuff really isn't all that big of deal. I have tried a couple of the great custom roms - Bugless Beast and Cyanogen. Both great. But not any better than Apex or Rubix (in my opinion). And custom kernels are a pain. the milestone overclock project allows you to overclock your Dx or d2 on the fly. with custom kernels you have to flash a new kernel anytime you want to change your clock speeds.
so anyways - I found out that the DX bootloader issue isn't that big of deal. just thought I would share some thoughts with you.
i have both the droid x and htc dinc and i agree the dinc has the WORST battery life ever! wtf for a small phone!! my droid x standard battery puts out more than this dinc but i like it all except for that and the screen isnt too bad. much crisper than droid x but not as nice for videos and taking photos. so not sure when i will switch back to my x but the dinc is fun to mess with but i for sure wouldnt get rid of my x completley for it thought! just my thoughts hope it helps!

Unfortunately for me it is, because the settings I need to stick; are locked because of the bootloader haha.

IF you are referring to OC setting they can/do stick through reboots, power up/down and all that jazz. They stick all the time thats what apply on boot is...

Well - it would have been easier to address whatever issue you are having if you had just come out with it and let us know what settings you need to be "stuck" that won't seem to "stick" bc of the bootloader.
care to elaborate?
Switch as quickly as possible I had a Droid incredible and switched to this piece of junk DroidX and am switching back now after five months. DroidX is a terrible phone. DroidX incredible with HTC sense awesome

i agree the bootloader in the HTC is so so much better than the x!! dont know until u try it!
In the decision between DX & DInc, I believe it may just be like comparing apples to oranges. The DX has a larger screen, a better processor and 3 times the memory installed. It's not often (in my experience) that you get a free 16GB SD card included with your phone. With all these things going for the DX, I'm not sure if a comparison with the DInc is fair. If a person is willing to give all of that up for a DInc, then the reasoning has to be something extremely subjective (i.e. cosmetic appeal or something). The DInc is truly incredible, but not as incredible as the DX. (IMHO)
the 16gb card is going from the DX into the Inc so that is a moot point..
and yes cosmetic appeal is one aspect of my decision.

Sure I've been trying but it seems no one has bee able to help out.
I got all the MDN and MIN settings on the phone stuck, except the ones for 3G in MIP and PPP (UM and AN) tabs.
I have tried whiterabbit's NV items script, flashed them via CDMA workshop and settings got stuck, but the problem is I gotta edit other settings manually and again not sticking.
I can send you a link of the values I need exactly on the MIP and PPP (UM and AN) tabs so you can have a better idea.

if anyone wants a backup hero

let me know i have one thats works great.
the power/end button is rubbing off but thats normal
and the volume up button is half broken but it still works.
we can work out a deal..itll be cheap trust me lol
How much you asking for? I'd be buying the Hero for development purposes. Also I'm an 18 yr old college freshmen so it means I'm running on a very very low budget. Lol.

And if u don't know who the guy above is.....
Well look at his profile
He's a busy guy who by the way has developed and assisted on a few ROMs for our little hero.
He's worth the charity/investment
V's CDMA Hero
