Has anyone else found that occasionally the screen starts going mad? I will unlock the phone and suddenly it starts going into various menu options, brings up a browser or brings up widget settings. It's as if there is an invisible finger using the screen, although it's so fast it's as if there is a buffer of actions.
I'm not sure what causes it, but a colleague has a Samsung Galaxy and reckons he gets it when moisture gets on the screen. My screen has never been wet or near anything wet.
Additionally, I've noticed it was happening just now when I was charging the phone via USB. When I unplugged it the behaviour stopped.
Anyone else?
Yao
Never had that before , maybe a application you installed that is acting wierd?
I had a application installed that just drained my batt like hell.
I also reboot the phone after heavy duty, meaning using the explorer , games, ....
me too!
I'm getting the same problem at the moment. It takes me about 5 attempts to unlock the screen. Once I'm in, sometimes it responds to my touch, sometimes it doesn't, other times it just does random stuff. It's making the phone totally unusable .
I got the phone on Monday (3 days ago) this is the first time it happened. I'm sat in a cafe atm and it's quite humid in here; if it's a problem with moisture could the humidity explain it?
I once had a similar problem with an ipod touch after it had been in a bag with a leaking water bottle. It went OK by itself after a few hours.
Anybody else got any thoughts?
Thanks
Damian.
The thing that I had to get used to was gripping the phone properly. The lower right quarter of my right hand is a bit chubby, so when I gripped the phone my palm ended up wrapping around the phone and resting on the screen somewhat. This would result in the screen not always unlocking right, sometimes selecting widgets and icons on my homescreen, restricting scrolling in the browser and random text entry.
Since I've altered my grip I don't get those problems any more.
My tattoo does this all the time....
Looks like exposing the phone to extreme conditions like heat or humidity makes this...
I used to keep my phone next to my Burning furnace i7 HP laptop and there is an LCD leak now on the screen :-(...since i noticed the leak, the phone started behaving more cranky....
update ...
Just to give an update, my phone is OK again now. By the time I got home a few hours later it had sorted itself out.
It's a HTC Desire HD, btw.
Damian
I had the same problem when I used a non-HTC charger.
Same problem here happens when charging with the original charger, when tyring another HTC charger with the same model number the problem is gone.
My guess is the charger that came with the phone is defective.
A workaround: I'm using a case for my DHD, when this problem happens I can get the screen to act normal by keeping the phones body (metal part) in direct contact with my hand.

Sometimes, I'll place the handset down on a table or whatever, and completely of it's own accord, the screen will scroll right to the second page. Then a couple seconds later, it'll scroll right again to the third, and fourth. I'll pick it up and swipe back to the home screen and put it back down, and it'll do the same thing again. Basically.... wtf?
Sometimes it does it in menus aswell, scrolling down lists one by one every few seconds when the thing isn't even in my hands.
Has anyone else experienced this? I've had a couple of replacement handsets and it's done it on all of them!

It has happened to mine, intermittently. I was hoping that it was just a little piece of grit under the trackball and that it would stop, but now you've got me worried that it is a common fault. Mine is an unlocked white in the UK, bought from Devicewire and delivered around 10 days ago...
Yup, I can comfirm it has happened to me with 3 white sim free Heros. It can happen when the device is completely undisturbed so i'm assuming it's some weird software glitch.
I can't even identify what causes it, to recreate the conditions. Seems totally random.

Hopefully a (rapid) firmware upgrade will sort it...
Could it be something on the touch screen?
I think I have seen this too! Do we all have screen protectors on? I do on my Hero....
It seems to me like the people widget caused me some issues. I have removed it and the device is faster and this bug hasn't appeared for me at all since.

Screen protector, yes. And the People widget (which I find very useful!)
Speaking about really weird things going on with the Hero. I can contribute with some funky stuff too:
When having my Hero near/under my mousecable the mousepointer (on the monitor) gets its own life. It starts moving randomly and begins to scroll the pages up and down in my browser WITHOUT me touching anything. I do have a cable connected mouse (USB). The phone has wifi, GPS and Network activated. I have not yet tested what happens with those turned off though.
Haha this is getting interesting. I noticed some mousepointer jitter when I was using the PC at work today, with my Hero nearby. I'll investigate more today.
Mine doesn't have a screen protector, but I do use the people widget on my second page. I'll remove it and see if it makes a difference to the spontaneous scrolling.
I just got my white unlocked hero 3 days ago and I just noticed this problem for the first time. The home screen would move over 1 or 2 screens without me even doing anything. Im wondering if it was major lag from previous movements I made. Im sure this is a software bug, does anyone know if HTC releases software updates for their android devices? I just switched from an iphone and hope they would release updates and fixes like apple did when something was wrong with a software release.
This phone is what... a week since launch day? We are early adopters and will find bugs. There'll be an update soon I'm pretty sure.
I think there is some interference with Wifi/Other radio and the Hero screen.
When i put mine on my desk next to my PC i cannot press all buttons on the touch screen but the wheel and hardware keys still work. When i move it 1m away from my PC this behavior is gone.
This problem happened to me when I had wet hands. All I did was wipe the hero dry and it worked fine again.

This is due to the phones aggressively high SAR value (it's really really high). I would think twice before putting this phone in your pant pockets if you ever want to have chidren

Wow, really? I already have 2 so going to keep this in my pocket from now on!!!
Aaaaaaaand HTC didn't bother fixing this in the new rom. The T9 keyboard input bug and huge lag are also unchanged.
I can confirm that this odd bug still lurks around in the official 2.73.405.5 build.
It has been suggested that it migh be due to dirt inside the trackbal housing but then why would the homescreen suddenly scroll on its own without being touched? Maybe a sensor glitch? I don't know what solution HTC are using to read the movements of the trackball though... one thing is for sure; it's not a good one....
I'm 100% sure now it's not a hardware issue. It's happened on multiple Heros I've used, not long out the box either. The only thing I've noticed that indicates any kind of pattern to the apparent randomness is that it gets a lot worse when there's a lot of mobile data transfer going on. One time I physically couldn't get it to stay on the homescreen long enough to click an icon.
Just pitching in, exact same problem here. Very strange that everyone gets it to the right :/
Just notice on mine too, some automovement in menu and home
Upgraded yesterday to new firmware (modaco)
Could be an increase of trackball sensibili? I see a settings to tweak it on blackberry device...on android?
hey guys, i have started experiencing weird issue with my hero since last week (bought it last december). the sense ui behaves weirdly and when moving across scenes its getting unpredictable with the touch response. if i go back to my home screen, it still feels am trying to oscillate between multiple screens.
on top of it, using smart dial has become a pain with its unpredictable behavior.
Though factory reset would help but now the touch is unresponsive that i couldnt sign in to my google account as keypad doesnt recognise my entry.
any one experiencing this issue? on top of not getting androind 2.1 this has been a real bad week.
any help is much appreciated.
cheers.
Go into the recovery menu and do whatever thar? I'm not sure this will help as capacitive screens seem quite failsafe, contact orange/insurance

Yeah I have the same problem, and factory reset doesn't help...
I'm gonna go to the Sprint store, and you should contact your carrier support. This problem is caused by device overheating, which damages the inner LCD screen. This screen makes the outer glass or reinforced plastic screen responsive.
It's free to fix with insurance, and $100 without. Of course, there is the chance that your carrier could be nice to you and replace it for free...
similar problems on my end too! gonna go to sprint soon
I have had this problem with my HTC hero on T-Mobile here in the UK earlier this year. Took the phone back to T-Mobile and they sent it off to HTC. After almost a month without my HTC I started to get annoyed. Eventually I got the phone back and was told that the main circuit board had been replaced.
The phone's been ok for about three months and now it's started again but appears that it's only the bottom part of the screen thats affected, where the three touch screen buttons are.
The phones going back again today but interestingly I worked out that it only seems to do it when the phone has been in my pocket and has got warm. The effect is that I can't press the touchscreen 'Phone' button or any of the buttons at either side of it but if i press any of the icons above them the phone button will be activated. (wierd!).
Now here's the thing, if I leave the phone on a flat surface in a cool air flow for a few minutes then everything goes back to normal. Which leads me to think that the problem is temperature related.
Regards
Quite strange, mine has started doing that too. Only when its warm though... Lol.
HTC has confermed to me that many Hero's have a bad touchscreen.
They will repair free under waranty.
Hello,
I've been having touch screen issues lately, since i rooted and switched to CM 6.1 a couple of weeks ago. The screen will work perfectly for a little while, but will inevitably stop responding. I'm using launcherpro, though i don't believe that's the issue- it happens regardless of which launcher I'm running (I've tried others and experienced the same issue. The optical scroll pad will still "sort of" work- better than the screen (which will respond to the occasional touch after the problem begins, but barely does). If I reboot, the problem will usually go away for a while again, but will recur. I wind up needing to fix the issue once or twice a day. I don't think it's a hardware problem because the reset fixes it, so I assume it is then software. Also, i don't remember having this problem with the stock rom. Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
Dunno how useful this will be, but have you tried reflashing CM?

Same problem here. But I've noticed sometimes if I'm using the phone not in my hand (on car dock or just on table) this problem seems to happen more...but when I hold it in my palm then works fine.
But sometimes it just becomes unresponsive. Am running virtous's rom on my g2. But I can remember having the same issue when running cm on my g1 days too. Reboot always fixed it, just gets annoying.
Anyone have fixes to this? Thanks!!

I personally use GV 7 or sparksmod and. Never had a problem, these are the best roms I think for this phone.

Been having this exact problem for weeks now. And I believe it is a hardware problem, probably some sort of short in one of the ribbon cables or the digitizer itself. Occasionally, actually 85% of the time I'd try to open an apparently and the phone would act if I held my finger down and then the apparently icon gets selected...very annoying cus it happens over and over a couple times, all I can do is keep trying until it does what its supposed to. Also with the on screen keyboard when I'm texting it'll act like I'm holding down on one of the letters and keeps bringing up the special characters to that letter...or ill tap delete to delete a spelling error and it'll end up holding it down and deleting my whole damn text and I can't stop it.
At first when this first started happening I could simply tap the screen and it would stop the crap it was doing and work fine. As time went on I noticed I kept having to hit it harder and harder for it to correct it. Wellllll guess what? Last night it was acting up horribly and I slammed my closed hand against it while it was on the desk and it cracked the LCD screen and now the phone is completely useless, even though the outer touchscreen is perfectly fine.
The restarting of the phone also usually fixed it for me as well but only for a few minutes.. which also makes me think its a short because after the phone is turned off whatever part is shorting out, that circuit is closed and just takes time until you press on the screen in whatever spot to cause the two parts to touch and create the short all over again.
Anyways that's my story...just don't get angry and slam down on the screen lol. This is my 2nd G2 and I'm tired of it, probably just going to get a nexus s or just go back to the nexus one, atleast it was reliable.

if you open the battery cover u can see that there are connectors that closes the whole circuit, so when u are holding the phone the back cover works like a grounding area that makes the screen responce to your touch. Acapacitive screen works like this: when you touch in any area on the screen, you simply are breaking the electrical field that the screen has, the screen "feels" where u break it and tells the operating system.
the electrical field depends on the human body a bit to make the circuit complete, so when u touch the metal parts of the phone, the screen works like it is designed.
My phone last week wasn't receiving texts so I restarted it and when it came back on the touchscreen no longer worked. The little white light would go on when I touched it so it knew where my finger was but any movement would not unlock the phone so I couldn't actually do anything with it. Sure enough a factory reset fixed the problem but I am still waiting for them to get me a new one in case the problem happens again to me. Anyone else have this happen to them or just a freak occurrence for me?
My son has gotten a hold of my s4 twice now since I have owned it. Both times I couldn't get the phone unlocked even though the touch screen was recognizing my touch. Restarting fixed it both times for me. Not sure if this is the same problem you are talking about, just thought I would share.

Happened to me a few times. Both screen swipes and the capacitive button presses werent registering. Happened on lock screen, call logs (swiping to call wasnt working), and swipe to answer. Pressing the home button and going back to the app fixed it. Very random but annoying nonetheless especially when not able to answer a call
Seems like buggy software to me. I've had a different issue, my phone says I have data, but I don't, I've had to restart the phone to properly pick up a data signal. This has happened twice now. Seems to be like Samsung's touchwhiz is quite buggy...
Yeah restarting it did nothing for me, tried many times, took the battery out put it back in all that stuff. The same thing happened with my data, I had a connection that entire time that I was not receiving texts but none of them actually went through which is when the problem began.

What app were you able to get in to to fix it? Would like to know in case the problem happens again when they get me a new one.
This happened to me last night, about had a major freak out.
First I have a couple questions for all of you who had this issue, so maybe we can pinpoint the actual cause:
1. Did you get any type of moisture (even just a little condensation) anywhere on or around the phone? Mine started acting up after I accidentally put my phone on the coffee table where some condensation had formed from a drink being there previously.
2. Any of you drop your phone at all? Even just a minor drop...as the day before I had a little drop (maybe from a foot off the ground), but I do have a case.
The reason I ask is because I started having this issue immediately after the phone was put on the condensation. Don't know if that was the cause, though, because I'm not sure exactly which of the steps below actually fixed it.
First I had to identify the exact problem...which I found by turning on "show touches" in Developer Options within the settings menu. This brings up a little white dot on the screen any time it registers a touch. Sure enough, I was getting "ghost touches" on the top left corner of my screen every 30 seconds or so - and it would generally last for 10-30 seconds or until I turned my screen on and off (that would fix it temporarily). The ghost touch was causing my drop down menu to pull down slightly every once in awhile, as well as not registering any of my other touches (including capacitive buttons). I knew the screen itself wasn't broken, because any addition touches were registering via the white dot - they just weren't interacting with the UI.
After doing some research online, apparently there are a couple main reasons that this ghost touching could occur:.
1. Faulty digitizer. Obviously this would Suck, and I really hoped it wasn't the cause. To repair would mean replacing the entire screen, as apparently the digitizer is attached to the screen and would be very difficult to replace by itself.
2. Any kind of moisture, whether water, skin oil, etc, getting in the cracks of the phone and staying under the screen, causing the pressure to indicate a false touch. Possible repair options included putting the phone near a WARM (but not too hot) surface for a period of time to hopefully cause the moisture to evaporate. Also some people said it just evaporated on its own after a few days (again, I hoped I wouldn't have to resort to this as I'm impatient and don't want to be without my phone for that long lol).
3. Software issue. Possible fix includes toggling HW overlays and/or GPU rendering.
Here's what I did:
Took the phone apart completely, made sure there was no visible moisture anywhere (there wasn't). Intermittently blew the phone (from the back and front, while it was disassembled) with warm air from a blow dryer. Left it alone, disassembled, for about 30 minutes.
Put the phone back together, booted up, immediately went to developer Options and (a) disabled HW overlays and (b) DISABLED "Force GPU rendering" (I actually already had it enabled).
BOOM - problem was gone!
So like I said, I'm not sure which of those did the trick - or which problem I had to begin with - but I'd be interested to know if anyone else had similar issues and/or fixes?

I should not have had any condensation at all on my screen when it began. I was using the phone playing with WatchOn and setting it up for my TV, I was messing with it for quite a while and realized after a period I hadn't received texts in a long time (I normally get at least 1 every 10 minutes, I was going on a hour and a half with 0) which I thought was weird so I restarted the phone.
When the phone came back online I did not notice the white dot pressing itself anywhere, but anytime I touched the screen it would immediately know where my finger was and follow it around, but not actually press anything. When I held the power button and the little Shutdown and Restart options came up, if I sat there and just pressed either one of them constantly they would eventually recognize that I pressed something and do that action.
I was also able to get into the homescreen by getting the talk option to come up and backing out of it (The buttons on the bottom of the screen all worked fine) but once in the homescreen I couldn't actually press any buttons regularly so gave up on it.
The guy at the ATT store said he hadn't seen any other complaints about it so I did a factory reset while there (I had already backed up everything with Kies) and when it came back on there seemed to be no problems.
Like I said though I am waiting for a new one anyway, they are backordered at my local store (Should have got a new batch in Friday, not sure where my phone is now) so hopefully the new one I get doesn't have this problem nor the lag problem a lot of people have been getting.

Just the stock Phone app. My problem seemed like a software problem more than anything else.
But if you have to restart the phone in order for the digitizer to respond, thats a different story. A swap should fix your issue, since it seems so uncommon.
Anyone having touch screen only issues? There's not a single crack on screen, I've always treated the phone very well.
I'm thinking whether I should replace the whole front, but curiously only my touch screen is not working, display is OK and works well using SideSync. Also, the entire touch screen starts working at random times (I haven't been able to figure out the conditions, it's not hot/cold or pressure; I've used a hair dryer, a refrigerator and heavy items on top of it).
In fact, it worked for a month after it started malfunctioning (initially it didn't work for some hours, and then worked again). But now it got worse again. It's not software as I've tried XtreStoLite and now I'm back to stock. Should I replace the whole thing?
Oh, I have the G900H.
Sounds like a bad digitizer. It would be wise to shop for a new one before it goes out completely.
