2.2 Update approved by Three in the UK - Galaxy S I9000 General

According to their blog on the Galaxy S, the 3 network in the UK have approved Froyo and are waiting for Samsung to upload it for distribution through Kies.
Woohoo if you're with 3 in the UK!

cant wait for this to come to the US!!!!

Why?

because then we will have an official froyo for our phones lol...if a galaxy s official version comes out for hte US, it means captivate isnt too far behind

just tried and no luck yet

I would quite like to flash the official one for my Galaxy S on 3...currently running JPM with Voodoo pre6 flashed via ODIN. How would I go about getting back the stock firmware so that I can update via KIES?

I was speaking to my brother today, we both have Galaxy's on T-Mobile but he lost his and had to claim another through insurance. He got it about 4 days ago and he has said his is running JP2 Froyo, this is how the phone was released from T-Mobile so Froyo can't be that far behind for us all now

I hate to burst your bubble but froyo is not that good. I upgraded to it and could only use it for 4 hours then downgraded back to eclair. I can;t stand my phone lagging and stuttering.

It is more likely that you missed a step or two. So far, everyone seems to report improved performance varying from marginal to great. Try doing factory reset...as that seems to be standard procedure to go through after flashing a new firmware.

anyone had this yet

Not really, i had 3 goes before i decided to give up and followed the guides to the letter (inlcuding a factory reset before and after)
It is just that comparing to JM9 with voodoo, JPO is not that efficient.
The best results I got was with Doc's JPO Rom with ext4 lag fix, but battery performance was not that good (0.6% per hour idle vs 0.1% per hour on JM9) so I reverted back to JM9
I do have about 120 apps though so this may be affecting performance.

just phoned 3 uk and there sending me a direct download because i carnt see it in kies and its showing up on the three site as avaivable now. so lets see then if it arrives and i can use it. lol

Flashing firmware asian to european- for ppl who have flashed

Hey guys in my earlier thread some ppl told me that i could update from asian firmware to european firmware. I would like to knw if there would be any problems by doing that, and would like to know ur experiece after flashing.. Thanx for ur replies. I don mind waiting an extra month for asian firmware release if u feel flashing can be problematic, if not i'll b happy to flash.
Ps: I knw a thread like this is available but there are no conclusive answers there. Thanx.
I like to know too. I hope no issue here other than losing the Asian keyboards. I assume one could still get a third party keyboard for say, chinese characters input.
Ya i recieved a reply in hardware zone forum, ppl have upgraded their firmwares from dd or dx to xx, xw (european). No problems were found, infact performance increased a little bit. One of the guys told me not to update cause firmwares released in europe tend to be buggy like beta versions, only final versions are released in asia and other places thats why updates are few. So if i were u i'd wait for firmware to release in my region.. Wat's u take on this? Do u still wanna flash ur phone or do u wanna wait a month extra......
I personally haven't had any issues with the euro fw to speak of. Like doomsdaycs mentioned I definitely experienced performance increase and even more once i installed the modaco rom. I ran the latest JG3 for a few days and it was great then i wanted the modaco rom so I reflashed with JG1 and it's still had no problems. Hope that helps...

Went from APAC to Euro firmwares, and never looked back.
Let me ask you guys who have gone over to the European firmware a few questions:
1) Has it fixed the 3G/wifi connection problem? (I hope you do not dispute that there is problem )
2) Has the lags/pause gone away? Or just minimized?
3) Has your GPS started to work accurately yet?
4) Does your email still takes ages to load? Or just become less slow?
5) Does the music playing still pause/freeze once in a while?
6) Anyone still able to install stuffs like Chinese keyboards from the Android market place after adopting the Europe firmware?
7) Do you have problem with the market place like what these people say?

Thanks for sharing.
Let me ask you guys who have gone over to the European firmware a few questions:
1) Has it fixed the 3G/wifi connection problem? (I hope you do not dispute that there is problem )
Answer: You need to create a new APN in order to use the 3G network. As for WIFI.. I am able to connect to any WIFI as long as I have the password.
2) Has the lags/pause gone away? Or just minimized?
Answer: Kinda but you will still experience it even with the JG5 firmware.. rumor has it that samsung will release an official fix for this on the end of july but there is no official word from samsung.. all we can do is cross our fingers and hope or best alternative.. use modaco's fix.
3) Has your GPS started to work accurately yet?
Answer: Yup, compared to the stock firmware, it is able to identify my location within a 5 meter radius.
** upgrade to the latest google maps version.
4) Does your email still takes ages to load? Or just become less slow?
Answer: Google.. first time setup.. yes. But now, depending on your location and signal strength.. takes about 8 - 15 seconds.. longer with 2 bars on my phone.. about 30 seconds or so. [GMAIL]
5) Does the music playing still pause/freeze once in a while?
Answer: When I am playing Let's Golf with very low volume then listening to music using the default player at level 6 - 7 volume. I do experience it sometime..
6) Anyone still able to install stuffs like Chinese keyboards from the Android market place after adopting the Europe firmware?
Answer: I am able to install Google Pinyin.. the qwerty keyboard still shows ABC but when you press each letter.. it will show the chinese character equivalent.
7) Do you have problem with the market place like what these people say?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7232231#post7232231
Answer: Weird case, never experienced that issue on my SGS after doing 3 firmware upgrades.
And no, I haven't rooted my phone yet.. hoping to hear from samsung by the month's end to know if they finally release a firmware fix for the memory transfer issue [NAND].

I second that.
The ASIAN version to be honest.. is full of crap from the TELCO's which renders the phone perform slower.. and I'd like to add that, my phone starts and loads faster now without the singtel crap.
Thank you M3keni. I'm glad it looks so positive.

You are welcome bro.
Disclaimer though.. other users may have a different take on my experience with my SGS.. hehehe.
..seriously, samsung should fix the NAND issue with an update firmware soon.
..but we have hardworking developers to go to for MODS.. iLike!
Before you decide and buy the SGS, visit your nearest telco showroom to try and feel the phone. Will help in your decision.
Have a good weekend!
Thanx for the info i'll be flashing madoco rom too.. cheers..
I'm waiting for the Froyo that's supposedly 3 times faster than iPhone 3GS. As it is now, it is a lot slower than even iPhone 3G. The black screen and long pauses is beginning to get to me.
I'm hesitant to root now as I'm uncertain about the hardware aspect of GPS, and my fear that the process might not be fully reversible, hence voiding the warranty potentially.
i have a question that how to upgrade the firmware from Asian to EUR use kies without root??????
i want to change that but have no idea, thx
yes please, even I need to know how to flash my Singtel FW to the eu version like the friends above mentioned. Mainly I want to do this without rooting...!!
And once after upgrading, will it allow me to upgrade to froyo when it is officially released!!! via Kies or OTA.

Can you suggest the fw number of the official euro firmware that you are using now so I can install as well.
No problem at all dude.
Flashed from DDJF3 to XWJG1 (Indian to some European country)... JF3 had major issues... JG1 is good... not great though. Most of the problems of the stock firmware were resolved by Modaco's Custom ROM... try it out!
You guys should give the new firmware JM1 or JM2 a twirl. The difference is night and day...no joke..and that's before root and any modifications.
@netboyhk I initially used this as my starting point http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpWcM44On88
Note that in the video he says it HAS to be on a specific com port....ignore that part. It's all relative to how many usb ports u have and how many devices plugged in etc etc. From my experiences it's REALLY hard to brick this phone but your mileage may vary
I think you mean JM1 and JM2 - unless Samsung's moving faster on firmware than I thought...

September 1st... I'm getting hungry for some frozen yogurt

I'm just sayin' I could use a heaping helping of froyo
i can smell it now
hopefully froyo drops soon with the gps fix. just picked up my vibrant yesterday and the gps is a little wonky, but it has been very accurate at times too. usually only locks onto 1 sat, with about 11 in view. don't really use it enough to worry about the fix, and i'm too busy playing with the rest of the phone.
seems like a keeper, but thankfully i bought the handset outright so i have 30 days to make my final decision. hopefully froyo drops sometime soon

Is there any news on whether the Samsung update for 2.2 will include a performance fix for their use of RFS for their filesystems? I can't see the abandoning the technology, and I'm holding off on applying the ext[2-4] fix for myself until after the OTS update.
I know I could use some frozen yogurt in this texas heat, haha.

I second that - 2.2 may restore everything back as before Lag Fix. Right now, I am happy at 3Mbps download speed, and Wireless Mobile AP feature with around 2Mbps download speed. Also, i don't count on expecting the upgrade from Tmobile, unless u got an HTC phone like Nexus One (my son got one, and constantly got OTA updates). Samsung and Tmobile are famous for false promise and tons of BS answers from CSR. Don't call and waste your time. In the mean time, do learn and bring your Vibrant up to speed so you can enjoy it.
I have Ryans lag fix and a bunch of deleted bloat ware apps. Once froyo comes out will all that be erased?

It's only 18 hours into the month (CST), give it some time people. Even if it were released today, right now, this exact second, it would still take some time to get rolled out OTA - you can't push a large update like that to ALL your subs at the same time. That's a great way to crash your network.

Galaxy S Official Froyo coming mid September

http://www.areamobile.de/news/16376-android-2-2-fuer-galaxy-s-froyo-update-kommt-mitte-september
This german site apparantly has first-hand information that Samsung is planning to roll out the Froyo update mid-September, via Kies of course...
This makes me wonder how close to final the JPC update was...
Also, Kies ist just downloading an update (and taking forever to do it) which might also point at things approaching some kind of big release. I have no idea whether the GPS fixes and Lag fixes will be included in this mid-September release, but I'd guess it's pretty unlikely since the last info from Samsung was that they are "looking into it" implying that they don't really know yet. Maybe we'll at least see some improvement, test runs with Jm6, Jm7 and JPc indicate that GPS performance is being worked on at least.
We'll see what September will give us and then start hoping for October updates...
I'm watching the new version of Kies trickle on to my PC as I type... I was thinking the same... is this a new Kies which won't brick Bell user's phones when they try to upgrade to Froyo!? It seems finding out what's new will take a while though... been downloading this update for about an hour already... and still have 37meg to go! S

I suppose this is in line with the same line of announcements that were stating that a Korean Froyo would be available by end of August...
Mine just finished. So far all it's telling me is that I can't update from JPC...well...that#s not exactly new, but it also isn't mid-September yet...^^

I definitely think delaying past mid-September is a bad move. Many other high end phones using the official 2.2 builds for about a month or more.
Then again, the announcement on Korean Froyo turned out to give false hope to a guy like me. Someone was saying how Optus would be getting this because he heard from an Optus rep that they were. I stated at that time there are 3 days left in August and Korea hadn't been upgraded now we are entering the weekend and will probably end the weekend waking up on the 6th of Sept without Froyo, so if everything else gets delayed the same amount of time...it doesn't mean great things for the rollout.
That said, I do think the hardware is similar enough that I was originally surprised to hear they might get Froyo as many as two weeks before the next countr(y/ies). Maybe they will condense the rollout timeframe.

I really don't care about performance. The epic already screams. What I want is for them to fix the gps/3g/battery/tws megabug.
Also, I dont want mediahub, I want the samsung apps from the other galaxy s phones, like the media player and clock.

Well the site is up. But the Download Center for the Epic is down.
I just got the update as automatic OTA.
The only things I noticed were:
My speeds picked up:
3g: went from .8mbs to 1.4mbs. upload still 155kbs.
4g: went from 1.2mbs to 1.8mbs. .47 upload (don't get good reception where I'm at).
Media Hub is online.
Back button was not fixed. FYI: salesman said the update would take care of it. I pretty much told him I'd be in to swap out after the update if (when) the update didn't fix the button.

Um. I just check and I don't have anything available. :S
I *might* have suggested it to my phone
I don't know if this caused my phone to check but I followed Sprints instructions to go to Menu -> Settings -> About Phone -> System Update -> Update Android. It said the system is up to date. I also tried "Update Firmware" and got the same message. About 2 minutes later, the OTA message popped up on its own.

Back button was not fixed. FYI: salesman said the update would take care of it. I pretty much told him I'd be in to swap out after the update if (when) the update didn't fix the button.

The back button issue is a hardware issue. The capacitive buttons work by detecting a change in charge on the screen. I believe the sensors in the corners might be defective in these phones.
Return it and get another one..
The first phone I went to purchase had this problem.. It sucked. Second phone I bought from Best Buy works flawlessly..
Get a new phone and your problems will go away.

Has everyone gotten the update by now?

nothing here yet...I live in New York.
Nothing here in Indiana...

No and they said every Vibrant owner would have it by the end of the month. Hopefully we will get it soon.
with Bionix 1.6 kicking so much ass and making the gps perfect I don't see a reason for caring about the OTA

OTA's are staged out in batches, not all at once. T-Mobile has sold about a million of these phones at this point (given that Samsung claims 3 million SGS Phones sold in the U.S. this is entirely likely). They are most definitely NOT going to update a million phones at the same time.
The update for YOU could come now, tomorrow, next week, or before the end of the month. Sitting here in a thread hitting refresh hoping for vital info about the OTA is a complete waste of time.
You have four options...
1). Wait for the OTA, which will arrive whenever it arrives
2). Frankin Twiz, built on JI6
3). Bionix 1.6, built on JI6
4). leaked unmodified JI6 firmware
Options 2,3,4 will get you JI6 today, with the associated risks of taking the management of the update into your hands. Option 1 is the official option which requires nothing but patience. Decide.
Wonder if I could call T-mobile and naively ask about a GPS problem and see if they will go ahead and push JI6 to me?
Nope nothing in WA I sure hope I won't have to wait til the end of the month....

I was waiting today but then I flashed Bionix and that will hold me off until Froyo.

Ha! You think customer care or tech care have that much power? The people in tmo who do, ssg data, don't take any calls and if they want to, never actually have to talk to the customer at all. They work solely on trouble tickets and work orders. The highest you may get by calling tech is atsg, the people who submit trouble tickets to them.

This is from my thread.
Got mine today but now my phone maybe bricked. Left it alone after it downloaded and installed the update but it won't go pass the loading stage. Now I'm trying to unbrick it.

What exactly happened? And what was your setup before trying to install the update?

Did you have lagfix installed? That could be the problem.
On another note, why are so many people waiting patiently for the OTA? Just flash one of the leaks. Bionix 1.6 is well worth it! And you can always ODIN back to stock!

It looks like it bricked my GF's phone also, now im sitting here trying to wipe it. Hers is all stock except it is rooted, no ROMs or lag fixes etc.
I got off the phone with tech support at T Mobile a few hours ago and here is what they related to me. Your inability to get checkin succeeded may or may not be usual or normal, they have no clue and the OTA is scheduled to run from 10-7 thru 10-31. has anyone else or does anyone else have the same inability to get feedback from the checkin code? This is the only phone I have had that the checkin failed to register except for a MT3g which they promptly replaced.
got the update today... no problems so far...
