Accounts are set up right. Sync is on. The phone will pick up new emails on a restart, but after that, it won't give any new email notifications. Also, if I open gmail and hit refresh, it won't show new emails that I KNOW are sitting in my inbox. Only time it gets new emails is right after a reboot. Not a clue what the problem could be. Any ideas?
I am having the same issue, especially when it comes to archiving emails using the Gmail app. I hit archive, come back to my computer an hour later, and everything is still sitting in Inbox as unread.
Yea, I am still having this issue. No emails will sync. I am fearful that I am just going to have to wait for 2.2 and a custom ROM to get a clean install and a properly working device.
I was at my local verizon store yesterday with a text issue. They said it was a known issue and being fixed on the next update. They said the text and a email sync issue both were to be fixed. They did not know what update though. IE: 2.2 or the smaller updates. Hope this helps.

I have had the exact issues usually after restoring a nandroid. I have posted this in another thread. Works for me every time.
Turn sync off.
menu/settings/Applications/Manage applications/gmail storage/force stop then hit clear data.
And do the same for gmail/force stop and clear data.
reboot. And turn sync back on.
good day.
I was having this issue and I did a *228 and reprogramed my roaming and it has been great since.

This appears to have solved my issues! Thanks!!!
I use the gmail app, but it seems to be very slow sending email. Also, the stock email app truncates ALL my email with no way to get the end half. Does anyone else have this issue? I'm rooted, using jt1134 super clean, stock kernel.

For some reason my Gmail App has stopped working properly about 1hr ago. Every time I open the app the conversations start loading then get to the bottom of the screen the force close message below pops up:
"The process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. dumpstate_app_201008062027_com_google_process_gapps.log has been saved. Use *#9900# to copy out log."
No success after rebooting the phone several times. Can anyone please shed some light? I really have no clue to what happened ... now I have to use the email client .
Thanks in advance for your help, really appreciate it.
I just checked to see if it was a problem with the app itself and mine is loading all conversations fine. Did you delete or replace anything prior to?
No I didn't do anything to the phone, not even install or uninstall any apps. This is so strange.
Maybe try removing the account and doing it again... It shouldn't mess anything else up. I'll try it out on my phone now to confirm.
[Update] Wouldn't let me do it because it's the primary. A factory reset is the only way to completely remove it. You can try clicking on sync gmail to stop it and then click on it again to force a refresh. Idk if that'll fix your particular problem though
Try going to settings, applications, manage applications, menu button, filter, all. Select gmail, clear data and clear cache. Then do the same with gmail storage, then try to resync.

I did a factory setting, unfortunately it did not fix the issue.
It doesn't work...
Ok, after 4hrs of insanity trying to figure out what suddently went wrong with my vibrant. I came to a conclusion that it's not my phone because when I added my wife's GMAIL account, the force close did not come up and all the conversations were loaded without any issues.
Apparently, the server where my GMAIL account is located seems to have some problems since I keep getting sync errors with contacts and calendar as well.
Have you tried logging into your account from an actual computer? Perhaps there is a problem with your account. I know I had weird sync errors when my account got compromised by a spammer last month, and google locked my account until I changed the password.

The weirdest thing is when I used my PC I didn't encounter any issues... That's why I thought the problem came from the phone @ the beginning.
Since this morning everything seems got back to normal. All the conversations loaded no problem.

I'm getting this now, too. My first two screens of gmail are shown but if I scroll down to where it says "Loading conversations" the after a few seconds the error pops up. I wonder if there is a "bad"email in our inbox that the gmail app doesn't know how to handle - something along three lines of unexpected characters in the email header/subject/etc or some partis badly formatted or too long like the header or something in it. Tomorrow (Sunday) I will try archiving my old messages on gmail and see if that makes the error go away. If it does then it a pretty good bet that one of the emails is causing three problem (the app still shouldn't crash but it would at least help explain what is happening).

Well I was able to avoid the error by archiving or deleting old emails in the inbox. I noticed when you have a large volume in one single label it causes the crash while loading conversations. I do not think it comes from a "bad" email, it's just a glitch in the app itself that folks @ Google need to work on.
Another thing that I noticed is when I logged-in my email using Nexus One, the force close did not occur but there was a failed connection-try again message.
Same problem here, noticed it today... good to know im not alone heh, but like the OP said im pretty sure it is a glitch in the app, so we'll maybe have to wait for a fix.
Confirmed, only by trying to scroll down really fast (and I'm on wifi). This was not an issue on my g1, of course I was using custom rom's. It'll certainly be addressed.
I have not encountered this problem with the Gmail app yet but I have had the exact same issue come up with the Messaging app twice so far.
But the problem has not stopped me from using the Messaging app and I was able to go right back into it each time it happened. It happened once about 30 minutes ago, and another time over a week ago.
I think it may have to do with the 200 text limit that I have turned off. Since Inbox is at 173 right now with Outbox 89, last deleted a few days ago and also with 33 conversations.
It does get a little laggy too but I have noticed it lag with only a few conversations with maybe an overall total of 30 text messages. I never had it lag this much on the G1 and I would have over 1000+ text messages and with cyanogenmod.
I am having the same issue.
I am getting the same thing too.
Mine started late last week after I updated the Facebook app. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling (highly doubt it was related, but due to coincidence I had to try it) and it was doing the same thing.
I did a factory wipe - same thing. I ran fix permissions and rebooted - same thing.
I am not sure it is related to having too many items in one label as I have just shy of 300 items in my inbox, and I have had about the same (give or take 2-3) for months (I use many, many labels to manage things), but I am going to try to organize, move, delete, archive, etc. some of my messages and see what happens.
Google knows of the issue.

Thanks for the link. I haven't had time to search today while I've been at work.
FYI, it looks like this may have been fixed. Mine has stopped doing it this morning. Checking the issue link that laris posted, nothing confirmed from Google that it is fixed yet though. Couple of people reporting that theirs is fixed too.
as the title says, i can receive but i can't send, and the receiving is intermittent. when i delete an email, it doesn't show deleted on the gmail app (where it shows the unread count in the header of the app, not talking about the notification bar here)...
if i delete an app or read it on my phone, it still shows unread and in the inbox of my gmail online. it's been happening since yesterday. i've done a factory reset, i've loaded recovery, at first i thought it was due to an app update (happened right before the issue started), but even after a recovery without that app updated, and deleting all apps showing update available, still happening.
i wonder if this is related with the VZW 3G issues others have been having?
Did you recently update anything? I had a similar issue but after a day or two gmail finally syncd back up. It happened when I flashed to the leaked ota and again when I went to 2.2 otherwise I suggest updating the gmail apk.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Just rooted, no roms or kernels yet. Only update coulda been an app of some kind. But Idk if that's it based on it kept happening even after rolling back to a backup I made a few days before these updates. Maybe a gmail provisioning issue? All other data seems to work, although sometimes slower than normal.

Clear Data
Hi,
This happens to me all the time when I am jumping between roms and using nandroid alot. Try going into Manage Applications, find the Gmail app and then delete the Data and Clear Cache. Ignore the warning about losing stuff since everything is synced. Then go back and open gmail and give it a few minutes to sync back up and you should be good to go.
Hope this helps.
Ooz
Absolutely fixed it. Thanks so much!

i am having the exact same issue, it started today. the only way i can get my emails pushed to my phone is if i go to the gmail app and then do a refresh. i have to do this everytime i want to read my gmail on my phone. and i do not run any task killers. i am running bionix fusion. i have rebooted my phone, battery and sim pulls and nothing is fixing it.
ditto
I'm having the same problem.
Running:
-Bionix Fusion 1.1
-Project Core v1
I flashed the JI2 modem yesterday again to see if it would help improve my battery life. I'm not sure if that's the reason I'm not getting gmail pushed to my phone though.

Had the same problem. Go to menu>applications>manage. Once there, press menu and change the filter to show all apps. Its set to 3rd Party by default. Then, find gmail, and gmail storage and clear the data and cache for both.

Sorry, but it didn't work for me either. Bad thing is that there are no other good email apps for gmail. Maildroid is what I am currently using just so I can get notifications. One thing I forgot to mention was that it was working fine today before I downloaded Gmail notifier from the market. Deleted it, but it hasn't worked since.

Actually this fixed the issue for me - or so it seems so far.
I am having the same issue, and I also downloaded Gmail notifier from the market. I tried deleting the data and the cache as well, and so far no change.
I have stock JI6, never installed gmail notifier and it stopped working last night. Will try the cache method and report back.
Funny thing is that I have two gmail accounts. The one that's NOT tied to my phone user information works just fine and is getting the immediate push emails.
Same here no new emails are shown in the phone Gmail since last night
is Every other phone having the same problem now?

In this case, i would check settings on gmail server and in accounts & sync. Maybe try resetting the values just to deflag and reflag it.

Clear the cache/data and make sure sync is still on. Odd so many had the same issue at the same time though.
Still not working

still not working for me. i cleared the cache and made sure i have sync turned on. i have unchecked sync and rechecked it and still nothing.
I am having the same issue. Right after clearing the data and cache, I got notified of new mail, then it stopped working again.
I have not made any changes to the settings but all of a sudden my phone is not consistently syncing with my gmail account. It only syncs every once in a while and it does not sync all the unread emails.
I have tried a reboot by taking the battery out.
Can anyone think of anything else I can do? Thanks in advance for the help.
Have you checked your Account Sync settings (Menu > Settings > Accounts & Sync) yet? Any errors? Sometimes you'll see a red splat letting you know an account can't currently sync. Usually, this is just a temporary issue.
I'll wait to speculate anything else until you can post more info about what you're seeing in your Accounts & Sync settings.
No errors. No ideas.

Man, we're going to need some more info. Did it ever work? What does "once in a while" mean? There's no such thing as random...
It's worked for the last 4 weeks perfectly. My phone was getting gmail faster then the gmail app on my laptop.
Yesterday I received 25 gmails but it only synced one of them. Hmm, I wonder if it could be the new gmail "priority" email thing since the one email that did sync was a friend and the others may have been ads. But I don't see a setting for that.

Yeah, I'd look into that whole Priority Inbox thing. I'm not using that at all because I just don't need it - and I run my own business and still don't need it. It sounds like something "superficial" is at play here. If you weren't syncing you'd truly just not be syncing - or would have errors in the Accounts & Sync area.
As far as I can tell, the whole Priority Inbox thing is managed server-side - i.e. I don't see an option for it within the Android app. Considering no one else is having a similar issue (and those who are using Priority Inbox know what to expect, so they aren't seeing an "issue" on their phone), I would suspect a setting/configuration/option as the problem; and not an actual problem with syncing.
Keep us all posted though! What users expect from software and what software actually does, are two different things...
Thanks for the help. I don't think I did anything to resolve the problem. It just started working again. Maybe it was a gmail thing.
Thanks again.

I've noticed similar behavior once in a while.. i found that unchecking and rechecking the mail sync checkbox in sync settings will temporarily resolve it.. and it doesn't happen very often.
I've always thought it maybe had to do with me toggling the gsm only/wcdma gsm auto settings as I go to and from my house and/or the combination of manually turning mobile data on and off (all battery management exercises) so I just leave mobile data on now (still have always on data off.. this was going to be my next thing I tried if it kept up) and it seems to happen less often but still once in a blue moon it'll hang..
I also use priority inbox but haven't had any other evidence that led me to believe that this was the culprit.

Hi all,
Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this but u couldn't find a relevant forum... On my 6p my Gmail all is not pushing email notifications through to me live a they come. I am having to open the app up and then pull down to refresh the app and then they will all appear.
If I leave it long enough eventually they will all come through. For example the other day I left it too see what would happen on a weekend day and at around 4pm my email went from nothing to flooded with emails going back as far as 5am.
If I use inbox it works fine but I prefer the Gmail app. I have even gone to the lengths of factory resetting my phone to see if that helps but it didn't.
Does any one know a fix for this please? Thanks in advance for any help.

Try going to "App Notifications" and select "Priority"
For me, it needed to be whitelisted in the battery optimization menu. It seems like doze or app standby is killing the app.

It's funny, I can't seem to get mine to update the main account on the phone but every other account on the app sends push notifications. My work and school emails actually notify me of emails but my Gmail account just wont work...
I been noticing the same thing on my 6p looks like once you open Gmail it starts pushing after that.

Tried that and no change. The only push notifications are if I sign out and then sign in to another phone!
My Gmail (v6.01....) was working perfect until I updated to the lastest build (MHC19I), then Gmail stopped pushing notifications. I read on the google forums in the link posted above that reverting back to Gmail version 5.7... would fix this problem and it did. So, I turned off auto-updates for Gmail and will remain on version 5.7 until Google fixes this issue.
