Questions for a Swype Representative - Android Software Development

So...I sent a tweet to Swype asking why their product is not available for download from the Market, and after a few back and forth replies I got invited to IM with the guy.
Any questions you would like to ask while I got the guy on the line?

So how did your conversation go?

He explained to me their business model, and why they aren't available to download in the market. Their goal is to be "the default keyboard on every touchscreen device".

Except those who need to download it from the market.
I mean it's their loss, they won't get my money...

I can understand not putting it on the market, as it could sabotage their efforts to strike deals with the carriers/manufacturers. However, I can see no harm in providing a means to purchase the app directly from their own website for those fans and supporters of the input method. I think some of the biggest advocates and evangelists of Swype have actually been users of phones that do not come preloaded with it.

An open letter to Google re: their C&D

I had originally posted this in Development which was the wrong place and understandably it has been removed.
Considering Cyanogen's recent tweets that he has started working on a new rom that won't violate Google's licenses, I wasn't sure I would post the letter but I have received a request. So here it is:
Google Inc.
1600 Amphitheatre Parkway
Mountain View, CA 94043
U.S.A
26 September 2009
Attn: Android Development
To Whom it May Concern:
Re: Cease & Desist Letter against Steve Kondik aka Cyanogen
I've recently read with considerable chagrin about recent events concerning your actions against Steve Kondik, otherwise known as Cyanogen.
First off, I understand that legally Google has every right to take the actions it has thus far. However, as I am sure you are beginning to see, your actions are bound to have a very negative effect even for yourselves. No one denies that Mr. Kondik overstepped the line when he included applications in his customised ROM that he was not licensed to distribute. Could not your response though have been a little more constructive?
Perhaps a dialog with Mr. Kondik, explaining your concerns and perhaps coming to a settlement that saves face for both privately might have been better? Instead, this ham-handed move by your legal team has effectively stopped the Android mod community dead in its tracks and turned a fan base that was quickly beginning to grow like a yeast culture against you.
I hold some small hope that some compromise can be reached but in all truth I believe Pandora's box is now open and a trust has been broken on both sides.
Will I ride out my contract with my cell phone carrier? Yes, I hold Rogers Canada blameless in all this. Will I "protest" by buying a different phone? Unlikely since it proves nothing other than I have money to throw away. Will I ever buy another Android device? I really don't know at this stage. I feel hurt by this turn of events and can't honestly say I trust Google not to pull some other legal manoeuvre out of their bag of tricks that further cripples my "Google Experience".
You have likely lost someone who evangelised your product, perhaps a great many evangelists.
Sincerely,

Guys Cyanogen just said in IRC that he is backing down and wont be any part of a fight with Google. This cant stop us. even if @Cyanogen is backing down we the community can still pressure Google to change the policy's that stopped cyanogen. We cant give up this soon. please work with me to pressure Google.
i think these threads need to stop being posted. it create a lot of clutter. who care if cyanogen or whoever may not include google exp apps...
cyanogen is developing an app to help reinstall these apps as long as the user has them backed up. this is technically legal.

I have only had my phone rooted for the last 5 weeks i think,in fact david1171 helped me i think and its the best thing i did with it and have only had
Cyanogen's Roms on it and am delighted because of him and others i know alot more about what my G1 can do and i have also learnt alot more in general
so i am thankful to Cyanogen for his hard work, but as the quote above puts it best. For him it might have to be over for now
so instead of all the posts saying fight google how about a few just saying "Thanks" for what he did do eh

Is it okay to download paid "cracked" apps

It's piracy.
And moreover, android people are introducing a new licensing mechanism where the app can lookup whether it's actually bought and paid for, or not - http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/07/licensing-service-technology-highlights.html

1. post here, not bad
You think Android devs are rich people, havin houses in Hollywood Hills, right ?!
Support devs and you get good apps!
to answer your question, no it will not break your phone...as a former notorious "cracked" app downloader (since paid for the ones I support and uninstalled the ones I do not use due to my commitment to the community as a user) I can't wait for this licensing to be widespread...I see too many people handing out links to piracy sites and also linking the damn things in app comments...but yea.

Common Sense
Android is probably one of the platform where application are priced the cheapest I have seen, so no, downloading an pirated application will not break your phone but it will not make the android platform any better either.
If developer can't make money why would they keep trying, as an example, A symbian chess prg cost 14$, on android it's 3.99 if I remember correctly so yes I pay for my apps.
The platform is still new, it has great potential, site like the one that are advertised can hurt development badly, there's a difference into giving your sister one copy of an application you have and making it available to everybody.
both are piracy but at a much different scale!
I will be really happy when I heard that the maker of an application I use everyday has made 1 millions knowing I contributed 1$ to it...
About Google piracy solution, I would be better off without it I am against all form of DRM, we will see...
P.S.
If you press and hold on a comment you can mark it as spam in the market...
[Sarcasm] Its perfectly fine. Google promotes it and so do the developers. If you read the forum rules, you'd have never asked such an obvious question. [/Sarcasm]

Don't do it! Let's support our Android developers because by doing so the Android platform will get better and that benefits us as users. All paid apps can be refunded in 24 hours, which is awesome in my opinion because if I buy an app and it doesn't work for me I can always get a refund so I never feel like I wasted my money. So do that, buy an app, try it and if it works for you keep it. Don't pirate it. Plus you get get regular updates to your app and the latest version always by purchasing it rather than pirating.
my 2 cents
By downloading cracked apps, you'll never know what was done to the app.
It's so easy for a cracker to gain access to your phone root permissions (if you are rooted like many of us are) via a cracked app. How will you ever know?!
Unless you yourself are a developer, then you'd know what to look for.
Most users have no idea WHAT to look for, and will download a fun looking app just because their buddy recommended it. For all you know, it's sending your contact list, SMSs, and other private information to some shanty-shack in China.
That's why Google made it an option in the Android™ Operating System to allow or disallow Market Apps. I think it's great that we are allowed to do that *cough*AT&T*cough*restrictions*.
"You wouldn't download a car!"
Don't get cracked apps. They make your balls shrink or your boobs sag!
Also never ask about cracked apps on a forum with lots of developers, you won't make many friends...
While I completely agree that piracy is bad for developers and the community in the long run, it is sometimes very frustrating for users like me. I live in India and have no access to the paid apps in the market.
I would love to pay for apps like psx4droid and a good chess program, but I have no option to do that. And these apps are not available directly from the developers sites as well.
I really hope that Google opens up the market to a wider audience. It is a win-win for everybody.

For people in countries without paid apps, search for Market Enabler, this has been covered multiple times in the past.

Sign petition against AT&T blocking Amazon app store

http://www.groubal.com/att-prohibits-commerce-blocks-amazon-app-store/
Send other AT&T phone owners this way too
The HSUPA Groubal got their attention - lets try this one. Yes we can root around their restrictions, but that is no reason to let them dictate unfair business practices
Download APK at https://www.amazon.com/app-email
adb install Amazon_Appstore-release.apk

Suit yourself on what you think is stupid.... but if you like sideloading, enjoy.
The problem is that you have to sideload every single app and update after you sideload the Amazon market app. And they are not named by app name either.
But for everyone voting that this is dumb; good job! Your comment got your post count one more higher.

If you don't have the non-market apps mod then sideloading the Amazon App store apk will not help. It will not be able to install any apps because they are non-market apps.
The only thing stupid is AT&T for removing this option to begin with.

Well, in all likelyhood, that will only be a workaround for one particular app store. What about any other current or future app stores?
This is something AT&T just needs to give up the ghost on.
What the hell is wrong with everyone?
Why do you have to bash and curse the guy who started the petition? If you don't want to sign, then don't sign it and move along. If you want to express your opinion, do it LIKE AN ADULT. Leave the 12 yr old attitude at home.

Yeah, hostility levels are high on XDA. Some people don't even read the original post and post all sorts of garbage.
AT&T should stop blocking apps and the installation of apps that they don't approve of. Oh and I would be really happy if they throttled my connection down instead of charging $10 per GB. That's just an unbelievable money grab.
OR try All App Stores.apk; can be downloaded straight from market and it will take u through to get amazon app. Petition wont reach the janitors desk. Not being smart ass, just the world where we live and as of now money power and capitalism, and definitly wallstreet ceo's rule it. So who has more of those us or at&t? Even if we got enough signitures att lawyers would find loop hole or art would make a large campaign contribution and new law that bans petitions against att or something ridiculas like that. I disagree. The HSUPA petition made the news on popular blog sistes (BRG, Engadget, etc.) and AT&T replied to the person that created the petition and finally made a public statement that they would fix it by end of April. And although the build has not been pushed, we know that 1.83 has HSUPA.
If we can get the numbers of sigs that the HSUPA one got, we should push them a bit. Consumer momentum works, and for this issue, it affects all AT&T android phones.
Besides, it takes 5 seconds to click on a box to sign the petition and there is nothing to loose.

Android Market not working on my device

Hey guys,
I've had my sgs2 for about a week now, and i have not yet been able to successfully open Android Market.
As soon as i press on the Market icon, a white page opens up that says "loading" and it stays like that for a while, then suddenly my screen goes back to the android home screen.
-Same result using 3G and WiFi
-Google account added to device (contacts synced successfully)
No idea how to solve this.
This is obviously a single case problem, but i would really appreciate any solutions from the bright minds that frequent this forum.

With an issue like that I would just try flashing a new ROM. I take it you are on stock and have already performed a factory reset? Another quick test would be to wipe the application cache from firstly the settings --- application menu and failing that just wiping the phone cache from recovery. If these steps don't work then reflash your ROM. It may also be worth trying another G account as means of ruling out any issues solely with your email address. Only worth doing if the problem persists though.
If you are not wanting to root you can just reflash official firmware but why not check out a custom ROM seeing as your hand is being forced! Head over to the Development Section and check out the guides for flashing with ODIN.
Regards.
Before flashing a new ROM, try the following...
From the home screen, go to menu, settings, applications, manage applications and find the market in the list (look in the "all" tab, not the default "downloaded" tab).
In there, click "clear data" and (if not greyed out) click "clear cache".
Now try running the market app.
If that doesn't work, I'd recommend a hard reset before flashing a different ROM. You shouldn't just assume a software issue needs a new ROM. If everyone else using the same ROM has the same problem then fair enough, but I don't see hoards of xda members complaining about the market not working!
Good luck mate - hope this helps
Thanks for the suggestions mates!
Clearing data/cache did nothing.
Factory reset did nothing but annoy me
I have a pretty big hunch this problem is due to me being currently located in Syria.
(screw you google )
I'm going to flash VillainROM and try the Market Enabler app.
Hopefully that will solve it and give me access to the Market.
Will post an update if things work out, if anyone really cares
Cheers!
I had a problem with my market as well.
Did some of the things suggested above - Cleared data and cache under Manage Apps, etc. Asked a colleague to check on their phone - no problem. Ensured my data connection was working, etc, etc but to no avail. In the end I tried Wifi and it worked straight away. Switched off wifi and tried again - it continued to work
Anyway, I'd say your problem is more political than technical ...
Just wanted to post an update:
Finally got Android Market to work! :-D
I had to bypass google's block on android users from Syria by using Market Enabler to spoof my gsm provider (requires root). And then i had to use a VPN service to mask my ip (subscription required).
Overall im very happy, it just sucks that some people have to go through all this just to experience a standard feature of an android device.

Despite my clarification, you still misunderstand.
When did i call 'your' country an a$$hole? Do you know how to differentiate between foreign policies and the rest of America? Your political stances are not shared by all americans. So please dont speak on behalf of all americans.
Your unwillingness to discuss this issue on a political forum in order to defend your position or listen to someone else's point of view reveals your closed minded nature that does not accept criticism or the desire to learn something other than what is engrained in your brainwashed mind.
I might have put a can of worms on the table, but you opened it buddy

guys, come on, GTFO to some political forum and discuss your obviously matching political views there. thank you very much! let this be the last post on the subject.
OP, go on, the thread is yours again.
Sorry to be off-topic, i thought my point is not a political view, but a common sense statement. Accessing google shouldn't be political, if you think otherwise than it's you right to believe so. And that's my last post here as well. Have fun oppressing syrian android users

And who says google isnt into politics? ;-) (thanks for the sanctions a$$holes)
Peace!

Let's make a big campaign to get JB's kernel for Atrix!

Hello guys,
Recently Motorola canceled ICS update for Atrix, but i'm wondering: did they started the dev and left middle way, or did nothing at all? If they stopped middle way, we might be able to use they kernel (it's what we need right now), and that would be awesome.
Ofc, Motorola won't release them easily. But what if we ask? What if we make a campaign on social networks and Android websites, and make it really loud? I'm sure i saw this happening for other stuffs, so why not our phone?
My idea is pretty simple:
We setup a hotsite with a simple message and users just have to click on the button referent to his social network to share the campaign. On Twitter, we can mention Motorola's profile, to be sure they are hearing us.
I already have the template ready, and it looks kinda like this: http://takemymoneyhbo.com/tweetit.php
I also have a VPS with Nginx + microcache, PHP-FPM and APC ready to go, so it's able to handle a big spikes of traffic (Digg/Reddit effect). What i need right now is the domain and, ofc, the message to be posted on social networks and on the hotsite itself.
We also would need to think about a name for this campaign (the name of the domain). Like i said, server is ready, template is ready, we only need the messages and a domain, since i can't pay for that at the moment.
As an alternative, we could also use this idea to get JB officially, but i think most of us would install a custom ROM anyway.
List of suggested domains so far:
icanhasdrivers.com
icanhasics.com
retakemotoatrix.com
myphonecanhasICS.com
weonlyneedyourkernel.com
updatemymoto.com (the chosen one)
What do you guys think? Worth doing it? Anyone up to pay for the domain? I will setup a donation button, if anyone is up for paying a domain, just donate
EDIT: The name of the campaign will be Update My Moto! The message for the hotsite and how it looks, can be see here: http://i48.tinypic.com/51eb95.png
As soon as we get the domain, i will close this thread and create a official one for the campaign. Let's rock guys!
Obs: sorry for my English.
might work if you also include other way to file a complaint against moto like via BBB. Motorola might not care about us when we complain to them but moto might care about losing the BBB accreditation. So include other methods like that.

You can count me in on making as much noise as we can on the matter.
I think it is worth trying. I doubt we would succeed. But worth trying anyway.
So all you need is a domain? No hosting account?
What about:
icanhasdrivers.com or icanhasics.com

Why you doubt it will succeed? I can try to get it on Gizmodo and lots of other bug websites, since i myself own a big Ubuntu website at Brazil. I think we can make this get pretty big, and Motorola would end up listening.

Yes. We need to come up with a good name for the campaign and a good domain. I also need someone to pay for the domain, since with all the servers i already pay and other stuffs, i'm pretty much out of money haha
Oh, we also need a message that cause impact.

What is "BBB"? I'm sorry, don't think i know it. But as long as it have a share-able link, i'm able to add it.

"BBB" Stands for the Better Business Bureau. It's a consumer agency that takes complaints and helps direct it at the appropriate place. They work with the company and consumer to resolve the dispute. They cover businesses ranging from carpet cleaning to food to cell phone companies. Some companies tout their high rating with the BBB, like a report card, so they value it staying high.
How about retakemotoatrix.com or nomoremotofail.com
I kinda like the ring to "RetakeMotoAtrix"

we need to gather more moto users (photon, etc)
myphonecanhasICS
icanhasics.com --> the best so far
Vote me in. I have already tweeted with hashtag #motofail
Anything with "icanhas" it's too meme-ish to be taken seriously, IMO.

I doubt Motofail will care about all the noise.

I'm sick and tired of these corporations/companies walking all over dedicated customers and getting away with it, so you can count me in as well. Even if we don't succeed, I'd be glad to get back at this lying, backstabbing company with some negative publicity.
I don't think it will work because big corporations are stupid. They look at us and think they have only pissed off a few thousand users. They forget that people like us tend to be tech support/advisers for our friends and family.
I agree with jhonnyx that we will need support from other device groups too. I know the Photon got screwed, but what other devices? It would be helpful to post in their forums as well. This should also not be limited to xda. There are many other forums as well. Maybe once we get a little more organized. This will have to be a huge effort to succeed.
This campaign will also have to be clean and catchy. Nothing related to motofail. Motorola will never draw attention or succumb to anything like this.
Why not motoupgwanted... That way it could be used for more then just us?
All you need is domain? Cost what $10 a year, why not set up donation button I'm sure you can get 20 of us to give .50 cents (cost est)

I have already submitted the following post in the usual Atrix ICS thread but I thought it would be useful in this tread as well.
"Just wanted to provide another pointer as to why it is possible to take legal actions and possibly criminal prosecution, in countries where it applies, against Google/Motorola. Security fixes, rather the lack of, from GB 2.3.4 to JB 4.0.1. You want to remember the latest security flaw in Android about a crafted web page that can wipe Android phones without a possibility to recover the lost data.
Why Atrix users should be left without the security fixes and how Google will propose a solution?"
Furthermore to what I have said in above I am certain that only a legal campaign will solve this problem, anything else would be waste of energy.
We already have enough valid technical reasons to argue the case but we need members with legal expertise in matters like this. In my opinion launching two legal precedents, one in Europe and the other in USA, would get us to a proper settlement. Please remember this is not really about just Atrix whereas about two corporates that ripped off consumers without a shame in bright day light.
Hey Motorola, just give us the drivers we want, and step away from the Atrix!
Seriously, is that too much to ask?
Count me in.
However, I also don't believe Moto will deliver. But if we can make some bad publicity to them, let's do it. They deserve it.
And...
