My dad wants me to root his phone. I tried but it turns out he got the ota update on accident. I was wondering if doing a factory data reset will delete that update and return it to factory software.

You can still root with the updates.
A factory data reset will not remove the updates. Post up the software version and someone will try to help you in the right direction. That or tell you to use the search button.

Since I've done the Froyo 2.2 OTA update, when I try to go into the internet it say's:
"Sorry!
The application Internet
(process com.android.browser)
has stopped unexpectedly.
Please try again.
Then it has a force close button."
What gives?
My wifes internet went down on her hero with the 2.1 update. Hard reset fixed it. Couldn't hurt to try.
Are you guys trying to restore bookmarks from titanium backup or any other backup? Cuz if you restore bookmarks from a 2.1 rom to a 2.2 rom it will screw up your internet app.
Try restarting the phone and running a profile update as well as prl update
I've tried the update profile and soft boot and still nothing. I have to save my phone list before I would try a hard reboot. Will a hardset go back to the 2.1 version?

1)Get your MSL
2)@ dialer ##DATA#
3)Select Data Profile, menu, restore.
See if that will work before factory reset
I'm new this what is MSL?

Nah, just call Sprint and ask for it, they will give it to you no questions, I've done it twice for my Evo(s).
Hard reset won't do anything to your system except wipe the data partition clean. That will definitely fix your issue. Probably some setting or app that didn't play nice with the update. There pretty much isn't any other fix, and if there is, factory reset is still the easiest way to go. Just sync all your apps with AppBrain. That's what I do.
Well the hard reset fixed my problem. Thanks guy's!

Yes you lose root and don't use factory reset. Kies is better.... And root takes like 30 seconds... come on!

Lol.... Yes Root is easily obtained but I'm on the road and am trying to rid myself of this lag and don't have my laptop handy! If factory reset doesn't help I think I will exchange my s4!

A factory reset would leave your device status as official still?
I'm sure a using kies would be a better choice.

Don't do a factory reset on the road. It still has the Samsung with the unlock logo if you do factory reset.
Also you might run into the initial setup crashing which eventually you will need to use Kies method...
Just saying there is a possibility. I created a lag guide in the General Section... See if any of those tips help.
Factory reset does not unroot. You just have to redownload superuser from market place.

***update 12/8/13***
My issues were resolved by the following changes:
1st issue: audio/video streaming not working over wifi
Solution: uncheck auto network switching under advanced wifi settings
2nd issue: unable to update PRL or Profile (session in progress, please try again later)
Solution: in Titatium Backup, unfreeze Samsung DM Service
I hope this will help others that may find themselves in the same situation I was in.

Running stock, re-rooted after ota 4.3. So many problems since ota update I'm at wits end. I actually like the stock and touchwiz, but this update has needed up so much. Wifi issues, no video over WiFi, no Pandora over WiFi, no Vine period. No YouTube over WiFi, can't update PRL or Profile.
My question: is it safe to try a factory reset at this point?
I so wish I could revert back to pre 4.3 and mja, but know that's not possible. Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Sorry I want more clear in my original post. I already have mja from the ota update.
I'm just wanting to fix my issues related to the update, ie the Wi-Fi issues and inability to update PRL or Profile. I was wondering if possibly doing a reset might clear these issues up, and if so, is it safe to do now or will it screw something up.
Thanks for any advice

What he was saying, is something is messed up with your install and it is better to clean slate it. First, a factory reset only wipes data from the phone and nothing else, so that is not going to do much. What you need to do is download the full MJA tar file and install it, then do a factory reset in recovery. By installing the full tar file, you will be reinstalling the modem, firmware, kernel and rom in one sweep. This should fix whatever the ota screwed up when it installed. By doing a factory reset after and maybe before also, it will clear out any app or left over garbage that might be on your phone causing the problems in the first place. You can find the full tar on sammobile or pm me and I'll send you a link to my dropbox.
Thank you very much for that clarification! I'm a little slow at this, but learning. In the short term, I fixed my wifi issues by disabling the autoswitch function. Still no PRL or Profile updates though. I'll try the above steps and post follow up. Matt have to be tomorrow when I have more time though.
Thanks guys!

Recently my at&t d800 has been acting up (freezing then automatically rebooting, horrible battery life) so I have decided to see if a factory reset fixes the issue. My only questions are...I am rooted with TWRP installed, now do I factory reset through the phone's settings, or through TWRP? and i am assuming i will lose root..correct?
Any insight would be appreciated.

EDIT:Ignore the OTA update part of the title.
If u have not taken the ota update you can do it from twrp and no you won't loose root as factory reset does not touch system partition

I did not take the OTA update. So what do I click in order to factory reset through TWRP? I have seen people say they have wiped their rom from their phones using factory reset in TWRP and i want to make sure i do not do that.
Once you go into wipe section the box on the bottom which says swipe to perform factory reset that's all you need.

Thank you very much.
Im wanting to know if there is a way I can unroot without having to delete everything on my phone. I have tried the update twice already and it goes all the way to the little android guy and loads about half way and then restarts the phone and nothing changes im still on ZVA. I think the issue is that I'm rooted. I have stock everything aside from that even recovery Is stock. I really hope there is a way to unroot without having to reset my phone.

Try opening the superuser app and there is an full unroot under settings. Do not know if it resets the phone or not, I have never done the unroot but I would think it would not.

It doesnt reset, you dont even have to restart.
Team work! Gotta love it.
Even unrooting didnt help. When I try the OTA it only goes 1/3 of the way and then it reboots. Is there anyway I can update manually?

Did you download over wifi? Might not have gotten the full download.
Did you also alter the files for free tether? If so, did you change them back before try to unroot and update?
I did dowoad over wifi and over LTE and still cant seem to get the update to go through all the way. And no I didnt do the tether hack.
