Physical keyboard missing < > buttons? - G2 and Desire Z General

This might be a really stupid post, but I can't seem to find those buttons anywhere on the keyboard.
I figured it would be hidden under the symbols when you hit alt+space, but to no avail. Its kind of annoying since I have ended up using the physical keyboard over the virtual most of the time.
Are these buttons not available on the G2? They were on the G1...maybe I'm just doing it wrong?
Thanks guys.

I find myself missing them too. I always use this face >_< when texting lol. I know its dumb but your not alone. I'm sure there is a shortcut for these keys somewhere.

Interesting, would've been nice if the g2 had some sort of indicator to let us know which keys had more symbols attached to them then the 1 letter and symbold

Thank you, good sir. You fixed my problem. I'm with Anartic, if I was not just informed of this, I would still be using the virtual keyboard to do those symbols.
This is much more convenient. Thanks for everyone's input!

Or you can hit ?123 button then after it goes to that page press alt n there is more symbols

That's for using the software keyboard, we're talking about using the physical keyboard.

Yea it just does ( repeating..

And this does not work in connectbot, where I am most inclined to use special characters. How about the vertical pipe?

It also dosent have the "^" symbol which I use to make this face ^_^

I've been using the trackpad. It's less elegant, and I agree that something by the physical keyboards would have been nice.

Second time I slide the keyboard out and hit "submit" accidentally...
But I tried this out and it works. I had the same question for a while and got my solution. Thanks!

You need to be using the default virtual keyboards that come with the device. If you've changed that to SwiftKey or HTC_IME it won't work. Although it works when using SmartKeyboardPro.

Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone know where the ^ is on the physical keyboard? I've found practically every key but this one!

I haven't been able to find this either...interesting. At least i don't really use that very often.

I've also tried every physical keyboard layout combination and can't seem to find the carrot character. I think we may have to resort to the virtual keyboard for that, unless someone finds it.

Doesn't work...
alt+j, alt+k, alt+l just produce repeating ()/.
alt+space popup no symbol list, though it popuped "setting up your new phone", and never appeared.
i guess some framework stuff or some htc.xxx.apk is responsible...

Long pressing menu button brings up search instead of just keyboard?

Is this just me or anyone else? Back on my N1 it would bring up the keyboard on top of any screen/app I was on.. On my Vibrant it brings up a search screen with the keyboard..
This disables me being able to use Swype's cursor menu for selecting text, copying/pasting. I don't know if anyone else uses it like that?
On the Swype keyboard, swype from the tips key to the sym key, left to right.

Reading comprehension fail.
He's problem is that a search field opens with a long press of the menu key, making the swype arrow keys useless when you want to use them outside of a text field.

More like a misunderstanding, douche.
He's out of luck though, since like he said long press of menu only brings up search, not the keyboard like the N1. I believe they did this because you international Galaxy S didn't have a search button, so to take its place they made it available by a long press of the menu. Though, I don't know why they didn't remove that on our T-Mobile Vibrant since we already have a separate button for it.

Last time I checked, misunderstanding what someone wrote = not comprehending what was read.
I was just joking anyways.
Have fun calling me names like a kid, pointing out typos (a typo on xda?! whaaaat?!), just next time actually RTFA.
Thanks for the insightful responses my fellow Vibranteers. Lol.
I agree it's pretty annoying. A friend was trying an older Android app that assumes you have a physical keyboard, and as a result, there is no way to force the soft keyboard to open.
You have to wonder how Samsung concluded the search button wasn't adequate for accessing search...
Menu lp for me is the keyboard, as it should be for everyone. Lp search is a choice of with vlingo or google voice search.
lp menu for me is search also......very very annoying!
For me as well... (I'm on stock TW)
Menu LP brings up the keyboard -- and the quick-search box in the top half of the screen.
Anybody figure out how to chnge this behaviour?
I have Button-Shorcut set to go to dialer with LP. As there is no hardware phone button,.SP search. + KB. I wish this app was able to map menu button that would be great.
Is your phone Loki? Use Odin. You'll be Thor!
I asked Steve Jobs and he told me that you guys are long pressing the button wrong

I feel silly asking this, but this has stumped myself and a few of my friends now.

I've done some googlin' and talked to a few different people, but I still can't find an answer to this.
Is there any way to type an up caret (The ^ character) using the physical keyboard? I've tried long-pressing everything, and I found > and <, but not ^! >.<
I've searched and searched. You're not the only person that's missing the caret! There's a big group of us out here.
At least that can be fixed with a software update. I hope it's fixed on that vaporware-looking OTA...

The carat appears in the Android keyboard (not the physical). Press the number key (123) then press the ALT key. The ^ appears where the * was on the keyboard.
You're missing the caret, I'm missing the pipe (|grep "stuff" is made infinitely more annoying when having to bring up the software keyboard for one character).
I am stucking waiting for my Desire Z in the UK, but can't you assign it to one of the custom keys?
The pipe | could become a big issue for me as the main reason for a physical keyboard is for ssh.
I miss having quick access to it, too.
Hold down alt + j until a window comes up. The popup will let you chose the caret key. It's a bit of physical + virtual keyboard but it's better than having to close the phone to type the caret key.
Well the pipes there if you press alt then space see | but no caret. I'm suprised they have these though ≠≈∞±‰†‡ but no caret

Wait, how do you type < and >? I thought those were missing from the physical keyboard and the symbol popup -- had to close the keyboard and go pure virtual to type those.

Sym on hardkeyboard

It drives me nuts there are no '<' '>' symbols on the hard keyboard. When you press alt+space it brings up a popup of extra symbols. Anybody have an idea of how we can make this popup editable? I'm pretty sure its not tied to your IME because it doesn't change when I install a new one or use swype, etc.
I'm not sure where to look on this anyone have an idea?

I thought this was section for brainstorming mods... Where should I repost for better results? Also, alt+L just gives me ')' how do you cycle through them?
Edit: ok I see it is tied to the IME cause switching to a differnt one wouldn't let me cycle through like you explained, switching back to stock keyboard now I can. Guess that sums it up.

yeah I thought about making a little app to do that but hate to waste a quick key for that, although I do have an extra one right now. But I just put in a feature request with smart keyboard pro for them to make the symbols popup editable when pressing alt+space. Hopefully they will do it, shouldn't be to tough.
Just heard back from SmartKeyboard dev and he says the popup from pressing alt+space actually isn't tied to the IME and he can't override it. Still waiting back to hear if he know how to mod it. In the meantime back to the drawing board. Anyone know where this popup lives in ASOP?
I would like the quick keys to be the option. I never use them.
I would like a program or hack to remap the quick keys to something.
one would be switching WiFi on and off.
Perhaps I can find an app in the market that does just that with one click, and i can then set that quick key to that prog?
I'll have to look.
ps. Corylulu, your back down to number 4 again
i think i looked through every alt+key hold combo, but i could not find a ^ ?

backspace deleting entire text message

Does anybody else hate it when you press the fn key and try to correct something by pressing backspace and the whole message gets deleted? Any way to turn that feature off? It has happened to me way too many times now.
You might be able to edit the keyboard mappings to do this, but I don't have any experience in that area.
I just have gotten into the habit of holding modifier keys instead of tapping before the next key.
Sorry your a step ahead of me...... I have been wondering why my message gets wiped every so often..... must be the fn thing...... I thought i was going crazy

sometimes you are typing fast and then you try to add a question mark or something. you make a mistake and it still has that FN command blinking and you don't notice...you press backspace and bye bye to your whole message.
While were talking about keyboard issues here (since I couldn't really find another place to ask) does anyone know how to "select all" which would normally be ctrl + A, for the epic. I was using gmail and wanted to delete "all" my spam mail at once instead of one by one. I know it something I did on my N900 easily due to the physical keyboard but after reading through the keyboard shortcuts from Cnet I didn't see this particular shortcut listed.

Thanks for replying, I tried to long press on the screen in gmail but it only selects the the email I tap and when I long press the actual label for spam it doesn't do anything. fn backspace
Any one have any news on this issue, regarding turning off the FN+backspace = erasing an entire line?
It happens to me AT LEAST once a week, but it's gotten old really fast. I agree with several users...it's just a function I don't need and end up accidentally deleting lines as a result. If I could just turn it off, I'd be MUCH happier than wishing it was there since I never use it.
Whether it's a setting or even an app or add-on that can help I'd appreciate it.
As much as I love the Epic overall, and I may well be in the minority on this one, but even months into owning it the biggest thing that screws me up continually coming from my previous keyboard phone is the placement of the Fn key to begin with. If I had designed this phone, the Fn and Shift keys would be interchanged position wise with the Fn key the one in the very bottom left corner.
It happened to me with droidx multitouch kb installed

Alt + Tab works on TF

I only just realised today having had a TF for over 6 months that alt + tab works on it
Hold the 'Alt Gr / Alt' button and tap the 'tab' button to bring up a recently opened apps list just like in Froyo 2.2 when you hold the home button.
Tap the 'Tab' button to scroll through the apps, then release the Alt button once you have selected the app and it will open it for you.
Its faster for me than using the recently opened apps button on the screen and is awesome!
Screenshot attached
EDIT: PS. To cancel out of it, say for example the app you wanted is not in the list anymore, then whilst still holding Alt, press the back button and it will cancel the shortcut screen and return you to your current app.
lol I didnt know that either
Haha nice !!
Only works on the desktop screens for me though... but very useful
Hmm, has anyone else noticed that you seem to get more apps in the Alt-Tab list than you do by using the Recent Apps button (on the status bar)? I would think that you should be see the same apps in both lists, right? This my explain my orher issue where I can't seem to multitask certain apps (don't show in the recent apps list)...
Thanks!
Awesome, this definitely was not the case in the past, so Asus (or Google?) must have included it in one of the firmware upgrades. I remember trying when I first got my hands on it, and then not bothering after that because it didn't work.
Check out this list; alt+tab functionality was 'discovered' months ago:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071739&highlight=alt,+shortcut
Not all the shortcuts are on the main page; alt+tab is mentioned on page four.
