Faulty menu button? - Galaxy S I9000 General

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g72IobdlBt8
See this video for an example of what keeps happening with my menu button. It's basically "pressing itself" repeatedly without my hands anywhere near the phone. I did a factory reset (and battery pull), so this is on a completely clean GJH2 with no apps installed. It happens anywhere, anytime and seems completely randomly. It must surely be a hardware fault, but I'm curious if anyone has seen anything like it?

Thanks - I just found that thread after I posted
I did what was suggested in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820943
So far it actually seems to have fixed it. Seems a bit strange that the "Phone's touch key FW version" did not match the "Part's touch key FW revision" given that I was on stock software, doesn't it?
Anyway, I did the "Touch key FW update", so they are at version 0x02 and 0x2 respectively and so far so good! Fingers crossed.

have to press down buttons hard for them to work, fix to this?

A few keys on the keyboard doesn't work when you just click it, you have to press down hard for them to work, and some of them enter in multiple times when i just press it once. Is it dirty or something, how can i fix this, outside of buying a new keyboard?
Mine does the same. There was a fix posted in another thread, but it doesn't seem to have fixed all of the problems I am having. I have to push ****ing hard on the period button for it to work.

Qwerty keyboard fix
They keyfix helped my problem with duplicate letters... hoowww arre youuu dooiing?
But, I had problems with certain keys not registering button presses. For me it was mostly the "Y" key. There is a thread over at PPCGeeks about this issue.
The keyfix does NOT fix this problem.
I am actually waiting on my replacement to arrive from fedex, got it replaced under warranty.
Call your customer support and let them know this IS a known issue with the hardware keyboard.
Enjoy your replacement.
Spray it wih contact cleaner. See near the bottom of this thread.

Verizon xv6800 slide out keyboard issues
I have some issues with the letters Q,L,O,A and Z. What seems to be happening is, when I push these letters in, it will come up with a little screen asking me if I use a different letter or symbol. For example, when Q is pressed, it comes up with a little window that says basically, do you want to use the @ sign or W. This only happens with the letters above. Everything else works fine. In the input settings, I turned off the enable auto correction and word suggestion. I even ran the fix and it still seems to do the same thing. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance
Mike
Q and P are my biggest culprits.
I just received my third replacement in a little over a year for this exact problem. Somehow everytime I've called about it Verizon still says it's not a known issue... It should be a known issue from MY replacements alone.
The keys that aren't functioning correctly for me are A, Cap/Shift, the blue dotted button (function key I guess), P, Del, the Right arrow, and that's pretty much it.

Touchscreen sometimes don't response

For example:
When i write a textmessage the keyboard sometimes doesn't recognize the letter i "press" and when i hold down and move my finger to other letters or buttons the device doesn't react. When i move my Finger up and "press" again everything works well. It's rare but annoying.
I have allready read this thread but i can't find my problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=595655
Have anybody this problem too?
I have the German 1.48 firmware. Maybe newer firmware-versions don't have this issue.
I hope it's a software problem...

It is a software issue, and it's one that's been reported on here before, but not too many people suffer from it. Those who do, suffer in degrees from it.
I too get this problem, but very rarely. If I'm, for example, browsing the forums here for a couple of hours on the train, then I'll get the problem maybe once or twice. It seems to last as long as I make it last - it stops if I just lay off the keys for a second or two, but doesn't stop if I keep trying.
For normal use (maybe 10-15 text messages and a few emails a day), I only see the issue every couple of days, so I've lived with it, in the hope that it will be resolved with the other little issues.
I hope this is of some comfort to you - at least you know it's not a defective device that needs to be returned
Thank you for this quick answer.

Yeah, I too get that, but sporadically.
Incidentally, if I shove my cat in the microwave and turn it on, is it only dead when I look?
Update:
I've called the HTC-Hotline an tell them about my problem. HTC was not sure if this is a software or hardware fault. So i've send the device to a repair service. After 4 days the device came "unrepaired back".
After playing around i found something out: When i put my Finger on the screen and the device don't response i can write letters with other fingers while my finger is on the screen. If i move this finger, no other letters will pressed and i can write the letter which i "tried to press" before. When i move up my fingers and tap the screen again it works again.
Some people reported the screen is more responsible in 1.61 but i don't want lose my warranty.
Have anybody who have this problem test the 1.61 firmware?

[Q] Touch Screen not working (is NOT a hardware problem)

Hello:
I read several post, on this forum and in others about the touch screen problem on the HD2. In all forums explain the solution to send the device to repair, and explain a problem with the power button and the touch cord.
I explain my findings and facts:
1. I flash the device with a WP7 ROM (I try several versions).
2. The touch screen works well, and I can setup the device.
3. I power off the device, or wait until locks.
4. At this time, the touch screen don’t works, and I can’t unlock the device.
5. With the camera button (green) I can unlock the device, and with the Windows or Back key, I can go to the main menu.
6. I try to press hard/several times/in the side/press soft… the red button, remove the battery, hard reset, etc…, but nothing works.
7. I flash the device, another time, and… THE TOUCH SCREEN WORKS!!! , until the device is locked.
For this reason, I think this is a driver problem, not a hardware problem. This isn’t means there’s some, or a lot of devices, with a hardware problem.
If someone can check this procedure, we can confirm there isn’t a hardware error.
Thanks for your time!

the reason its likely to be hardware is because most folk on here do not have this issue, if it were a driver issue then we'd all be likely having the problem, unless your in an unfortunate position of have a different hardware revision to the rest of us. Just because something is intermitant doesnt mean its not hardware.
another test would be to go back to WM6 and see what happens there, there is a chance that your hardware is just a bit different to ours which might be the reason WP doesnt like it but WM works...

+1, I agree with you, is time to replace touch screen. Try WM6.5, Andoid rom nand or sd and finally WP7.5 rom.

This is a marriage or a defect of the device => replace touch screen.
Thanks to all for your responses.
I thing you are right , and I need a new touch screen, the response is erratic.
Now it didn't works with any rom, included the original.
Thanks for your time!
In my case, with WP7 make this, but now with wm6.5 rom work well.
Try flash another!
WP7 - Not working touch screen
Android ICS - Not working touch screen
WM6.5 - WWE rom working touch screen
How odd! Personally I'd consider getting it changed, might be on its last legs, also, make sure you squash the bottom right corner around the power button, its well documented that the cables are behind this location, the glue holding it together separates and can allow the cable to come lose, you can usually tell its coming apart when there isn't much of a power button to push

False recent app presses causing multi-window to activate?

I keep getting multi window popping up for no reason. I rest my phone on my pinky when I use it and wonder if that has something to do with it. Like the capacitive key is shorting on the frame and registering my pinky as a capacitive key press. I've watched as it happens and my pinky is no where near the recent apps key, basically dead center on the charging port. Anyone else having this issue? Really don't want to go through the hassle of a return, but it's getting really annoying.
The same issue for me. Once it appeared when i only read a web page and didn't youch the screen. I have S7, not edge.
I'd suspected Google keyboard but I uninstalled it and the issue remains.

Just happened again without my pinky on the bottom. Seems to be most prevalent soon after or right after unlocking the phone.
Are you left handed? When I didn't have a case, I kept accidentally pressing the back key with my palm without realising but I'm right handed

I can't tell you why it's happening, but I will say that this is one reason many Android fans prefer on-screen buttons that are controlled by the touchscreen drivers. They are more reliable and don't have little issues like being too sensitive or not sensitive enough or ghost presses, etc.
I have/had the same issue, i called Samsung and they told me the update that came today (around 60MB) could fix it but they were not sure, they told me to do a factory reset if the update didn't help, i did and i haven't had the annoying multi window popup after that. tho i cant be 100% its fixed. the issue were quite constant before i did the factory reset and it happen 5-10 seconds after i unlocked the screen. i have unlocked the phone over 40 times after the factory reset(after i finished installing apps etc) and everything works like it should, so it looks good so far. i will keep you updated tho. My Phone is a "Nordic Edition" but the model is SM-G935F so it is the international one.

the issue is not fixed i'm afraid. i got the multi view popup again when i was using chrome. so the update did nothing :/ i'm gonna replace the device i think, i'm gonna call Samsung tomorrow and get them to use the app "Smart Tutor" so the can check if it is a hardware or a software issue. ill keep you posted.
A temp fix you can use is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nerd.multiwindowtoggle the app will disable the multi window feature so when the phone presses the button by itself nothing happens. cheers
Same issure here (I'm left handed). Can the "multi-window" thing be deactivated ? I never use it...
But to be honest, I don't see it as a bug, maybe as a design bug. The button is too close to the edge of the phone and edge of the screen, this is bound to happen.

I could understand accidentally hitting it, sure. However, I have no fingers near the recent apps button when it activates. That's why I theorized it shorting out on the frame of the phone.

XA2 won't wake from sleep

I just bought a used XA2 that appears to be in excellent condition. Problem is, whenever the screen sleeps either after timeout period or tapping the power button, nothing will get the screen to come on besides holding power and volume up buttons which reboots the phone. I have yet to set the phone up as I was checking out functions before I did all that. Bootloader is still unlocked. Did a factory reset several times and software repair with Sony Companion, nothing fixes it. The phone is still on. I get hepatic feedback when I press camera button for instance. But nothing wakes it. Power button functions normally as a power button. Used to be you could wake a phone by tapping the screen twice but there is no option for that on this phone. I've searched online with no luck, and I've found nothing on XDA. So just throwing it out there in hopes someone has some ideas. Last resort is I send the phone back, which is an option.

1st of all i am really feeling disappointment that xda is no more like past days forum now, i remember few years back xda was the home of resolving issues, but now i am seeing here that nobody have concerns with other problems..
Anyway bro for you my suggestion is to perform Xperia tests in support app, run all tests and specially ear proximity sensor test, i don't know why but i feel its an issue with proximity or any other sensor which is related with display, most probably its proximity or light sensor, run the test and see the results, if that test show you any problem with a particular sensor so it means its a hardware issue,
As you mentioned you performed hard reset and software repair as well and nothing had changed for you after this, so definitely its not about software but its a hardware issue,
Run these tests, it will show you the reason behind..

Hmmm.. in that case i don't think so its a software glitch or firmware error, its your hardware issue, but i will never suggest you to disassemble your device by yourself, the device is in warranty or not is another thing, even your warranty gone void due to rooting the phone, you have to give it to sony service center to resolve this particular issue, don't do anything by yourself and don't give it to any cell phone technician to repair.. although its not good to even assume but i think its to be batter to change your device after repairing, hope things get better for you.. :good:
