[Q] Android Adverts - G2 and Desire Z General

I've just installed the XDA app and am posting for the first time! This is also my first Android phone.
My question is - why do I keep getting adverts along the bottom of the screen in half my apps? I had a brief shot of Android on my HD2 and played Angry Birds for hours and never saw and advert. Today I played for 30 seconds and they started popping up.
They're popping up on this app too!
How do I disable the ads as they're pretty annoying?

You can't they are put on there so the devs can get some extra money. There is an app on the Android market which disables them but I'm not sure what its called.

what did u do today with your g2 ?

I used my g2 to:
map
track
stream music
play playlists
navigate from google maps, WHILE STREAMING MUSIC, AT DIFFERENT VOLUME LEVELS
take pictures
720p videos
share all of the above, along with editing the gps track
and it never missed a beat
navigation over music is a very very nice touch. noise cancelling headphones, navigation, pandora, and a external cig charger on a dualsport is a goood goood thing !
(someone poke microsoft, I think balmers fallen asleep @ the wheel again)
Used it as an integral part of locating and destroying Osama Bin Laden, and saving the world for another day....(for security reasons I can't be too specific)....
Just another day with my G2...
phone calls
txt msg
read the news
and flashed the new pershoot kernel
That kind of commentary is best left for arfcom or some other jingoistic corner of the internet.
My G2 woke me up today. I checked my email and have sent several dozen texts, fielded one 20 minute phone call, and put some nice new live wallpapers on for when I'm trying to force the last few bits of juice out in a hurry for battery calibration. Yesterday I used it for nav.
I snuck behind a robber in my house and killed him with my sturdy G2.
Made it even more awesome because I added the new "Mixer Theme" to it.

ok ok, I'm kidding.
Woke me up.
Check RSS (Engadget, Giz, Kotaku, BGR, AndroidCentral, CNN, LATimes)
check email (4 email accouns 3 @ hourly and 1 @ 4hrs)
Wyse PocketCloud to control my laptop from my internship place
Played with a distance measuring software (based on GPS, not trigonometry)
called a bunch of people
check XDA a few times
played music for about 1hour straight
i think that's about it...
Ordered 3 extra batteries+charger from eBay.
Once these arrive, I should be able to actually use my G2 without being terrified of the battery dying around noon.

OT: NYTimes app still in market?

I have no other place to ask this where there are USA x10s. I wanted to check my review for the NYTimes Application making sure that it was a star or less, since the paywall update it has not worked well on the phone causing crashes and reboots. This is sort of sad since it was a app that SE's pr tweets about.
I couldn't get to the app from my apps list or find it in a search. Can you?
TIA.

I can see it in the market.
Didn't see a comment from a Stan but there are hundreds of similar comments with 1 star ratings.

After 15 hours I can now see the NYTimes app. I tried several times during the day to go to the app and kept getting the market error message. The application told me that there was an update this evening but the update /install gave me the same android market error. When I listed 'my apps' this evening the NYTimes app showed that there was a update but wouldn't load. After reboot I was finally able to get the updated application.
Thanks for your help.

Spam attached to apps...

I put the game Air Penguin and another game Sky Warrior on my phone last night and 1 of them has put a load of other crap on there as well...
I've now removed both as i'm not sure which one was the issue but most of the day today i've had notifications that i might have won an Iphone 4 and other spam like that, it hasn't happened since i've removed the 2 games.
but since installing these 2 games i've also got another app that displays as "search" in a blue square and when you select takes you to a website www.livemobilesearch.com
Any ideas how i can remove this might have missed it but i can't find it with manage applications...
Dam annoying when this spam gets attached to other things you download...
Wish i could help, but where did u get the apps from, if u don't mind me askin.

From the marketplace...
I'm almost certain the search icon on your homescreen is just a bookmark and not an app. Just delete it.
As far as figuring out which app sent spam to your notification bar is easy. Reading the reviews for both in the market will give you a hint. Or when you get the spam icon in your notification bar just select it. For a brief second or 2 you will see the name of the app at the top of the screen.
There are a number of free apps in the market taking on this spam format. Hope google puts a stop to it. Always read the reviews before you install.
Yeah it was a bookmark just made to look like the Google search

I have Air Penguin and I don't have the ads or bookmark so it has to be the other app.
Install an app called "airpush detector" (free on the android market). It identifies the app that has airpush adware in it so you can uninstall it. And don't forget to 1 star the offending app with a comment in the market. When it happened to me it wasn't the app I thought that was actually the problem.

Yup, exactly what I did with the app MySettings - Airpush is totally annoying.

spyware?!
actually the link contains a huge (may be 500-1000 characters or something like that) random string.
i'm afraid that all passwords and cookies could be stored within this string
i changed all passwords i recalled

How do you know which app is giving you notification ads?

I have gotten ads in my notification tonight "download this blah blah" etc.
they're annoying. how do i check which app it's coming from?
download airpush detector
Go to the running apps tab in settings and see which app there is running when it should not be (ie. a game or app that you closed and is not actively running but a process still is)
Long press on the notification -> App Info
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Also, if you look at your notifications (the star is usually the push), beneath the annoying ad there is a second line, and the first item listed on that line is generally the offending program.. uninstall said app, and the push goes away

Do what danton said. It's the easy way around it.

AdFree.
If you're rooted, download the app AdFree. I have it on both my SIII & Nexus 7. I haven't seen an ad (notification or otherwise) since
thanks guy. I have adfree but it still popped up.
turns out to be a battery widget app, uninstalled right away.
airpush detector didn't find it. however i noticed the name of the app in the second line (at first i thought it was an ad)
next time if the app name is not there i'll try holding it down for app info.
great advice guys, thanks!
