I was at the beach with the dog the other day and found a defect with the video camera feature. It is obscure but...
Steps to Reproduce:
Open the stock video camera.
Record some video.
Stop recording video.
Use power button to turn off the screen. (I did this at the beach to conserve power.)
Close the phone.
Open the phone to expose the keyboard. (I often do this as it saves me a step compared to clicking power and then swiping unlock.)
Record another video.
Expected Result:
Camera would record video.
Actual Result:
Video application becomes unresponsive. Force close about 10 seconds later.

LOL that is a pretty well formated bug
Test software for a living? For what it is worth I can repro this. Nice find.
I think you should hit the back button after you are doing recording the first video so that your phone isn't idling/standingby with the video recorder/camera on.
exit out of camera mode when you arent recording then close your phone.
I cannot reproduce this with my G2.
neither can i. i tried over n over, it records fine.

Hmm, I reproduced it before and after the latest update. An office mate here reproduced it too.
I can't get this to happen on my Desire Z, if that helps
Not sure if the camera apps are the same (I imagine the DZ uses an HTC app not the stock one). Also I turned mine off after the live view started up again, not during the moment where you can view/delete/share the recorded video.

Hi Guys,
i tried to search in the forums but could'nt find the answer to that.
When I take a pic with my HD, first everyting is alright. When the shot is taken the picture shows and the the small windows-thing appears in the middle of the screen and does'nt leave anymore.
After a couple of seconds (sometimes never) it's gone, just like my taken picture. Actually I can't take any picture with my cam, that annoying!
Has someone the same problem. It happens with all resolutions and settings in the same way.
Thanks
Christian
Yes! Something very similar happened to me just last night. I was using the video camera function to record my son's wrestling match. I had taken a few recordings of other matches, and then on the 4th or 5th match (a new file for each one) the recording suddenly stopped after a few seconds. Then after that the camera application was very slow to respond and had a black screen. I tried turning the camera program off and on, and tried doing a soft-reset. Nothing worked.
Then of course my son's match started and I figured I'd try to hit record even though it was a black screen and just hope that it was recording anyways. After 10-20 seconds of the black screen it suddenly turned on and was recording.
And this morning it's working find again, although I haven't tried taking more videos to test it out.
I'm using the panora Black Pearl 1.4 ROM.
me too, me too. It seems that this issue happens when I start to have many things in my phone (both in terms of software installed and taken photos). Waiting for a good explanation and solution to overcome this problem. I also notice that the videos taken are now not able to play, since I always have to use Core Player
I has this same problem.
If you have Advanced config installed make sure that you have
Encode photos in portrait mode set to : No under camera settings
This is funny because default value is YES and that freezes camera
Thanks a lot for the hint.
works perfect. now I got my cam back ;o)
You guys are just amazing!!!!!!!!!
I was about to hard reset (thanks to winnerzero who sent me here).
Saved me a hard reset!!
brilliant...
Thanks a lot to Kohozga
Your hint just saved me from hard resetting my HD.
I have a particular video I recorded in HD that when played in the correct orientation (vertical) it won't play. If I attempt to hold the phone vertically and play the video it will play the first couple seconds then say "sorry, this video cannot be played". I noticed that if I hold the phone horizontally (but half the screen turns blue because of the glitch in CM7) for a couple of seconds right when the video starts, then turn it vertical, I can continue watching the video fine all the way through. Just as long as I don't start the video holding the phone vertically.. and reasons as to why this is? I made sure it wasn't the file itself so I watched it on my desktop and it worked just fine.

It's a nightly bug, will probably get fixed within a few days at most.
(Excuse me. Since I'm Nexus One user, I seldom visit this board, but I want to ask something, because of my brother)
My younger brother bought Xperia Arc after his Desire was broken and dead. He found this issue at the first day: When you push camera shutter button while you're watching any youtube video the screen becomes... sorry, how can I explain it? Well, watch these video clips he took. I hope someone can tell what's wrong.
Video link: The Issue - 2 - 3
**I haven't check 'question' because I just want to know anyone ever seen it.
It's because the camera shutter button (when pressed fully, for a second) opens the camera up, where ever you are in the phone.
I've never realized this until now! Thanks for the tip!
And you need a nail-cut immediately
I first noticed this after I had a very hot lamp too close to my phone while it was in a tripod and recording myself for an Indiegogo campaign video. The video sceen was highly distrorted and before that it was scrolling. Like what you see in older TV shows or movies when they record a computer screen or tv moniter. The screen will scroll up or down.
I was recording mself with my Surface RT tablet on in the background and the screen starting scrolling before becoming distrorted. (NOT the Surface RT screen as viewed on my camera like the example of recording TV moniters or computer screens. The Surface RT screen looked normal through my phone's screen and in the final video.) There is no distorting or problems with the videos or photos I took during the crazy screen or after. So I assume the camera hardware itself is ok. And at that time my phone was VERY hot.
Today I was recording myself agian on the tripod without the hot lamp. It was in the tripod for only 2 minutes when the screen started to scroll up again. This time it wasn't hot at all.
If I exit the camera app and re-enter it is fine. So far this happened only twice and only in the camera app regardless if it is in the video or photo mode.
Did I damage the phone or is this a known problem? Any ways to fix this?
Have you tried any other camera app from market?

No, but I will now. Also, it just did it a third time now. but I was holding the camera vertially and it went sideways this time. Also funny thing is my Google Play freezes 50% of the time when I click on an app to view it before I download it.

I had this problem when I flashed a kernel that was JSS for a ROM built on JWR firmware. Have you flashed any kernels? If so double check with your ROM provider about what base was it built on, JSS or JWR. Then double check with the kernel and flash the appropriate one. If you haven't flashed a kernel then i have no idea what is wrong. You may want to reflash the ROM assuming that you are using a custom ROM.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I've recently purchased a Huwaei Nexus 6P. It's fantastic in every way including the camera... That is of course, when I can get the app to work. I use the camera to take pictures and occasionally video about 5% of the time. The app just hangs on the screen just before the viewfinder appears, and the only way to get the camera working again is to reboot the phone! It's incredibly frustrating, because everything about this phone is flawless! Anyone got any ideas?
you might have to take advantage of the warranty to get a replacement, if it persists, when i open the camera app on my Nexus 6P, i do not get that issue. however, i have only owned mine for less than 1 day. so we shall see....
BTW, i'm curious, does it still do that even if you double tap the power button when screen is off?
I've noticed that it only really does it when I come back from videoing something. It doesn't do it with the double tap the power button also, I don't think it's the handset, just the app I think
Mine acts a little wonky at times too. I tried to reproduce the issue you said you're having and can't get mine to do that, however mine does a few other weird things.
The camera on my phone takes a lot of double photos. I'll snap a pic and look through the photos quick and i'll see 2 of the same pic, but the google photos app only shows 1. If I delete that pic then both disappear from the camera app. I also get some pics that turn out as just a grey screen like the photo doesn't process completely. I've also had a few pics randomly disappear after closing the camera app. I'm really hoping it's just a buggy camera app.
I get the same issue as the op. But mine eventually says "cannot connect to camera" after 10 seconds or so.. Have factory reset a couple of times too..
Also my NFC of pictures from oneplus one doesn't work, 6p goes blank screen whenever I try to send...
Is there a way to take a picture while shooting video? If not, is there an app that you can recommend?
Unfortunately the camera situation is a bit beta-ish
