just downloaded the speedtest.net app and my "H" speed is really slow. With no wifi, I get download speed of 219kbps and upload of 473 kbps.
Anyone know why? is is with my signal with H and full bars.
What type of latency are you seeing?
I only ask this because at night around 10pm or so, I notice I get speedtest results like this but my latency reads around 275ms. It doesn't recover until about 7 am.
I am in the NW suburbs of Chicago.
An interesting note, other speed test sites do not seem to reflect this slowdown so I am inclined to think that my problem is related to the speedtest app and not the connection. IDK..
I am in Detroit and I get crappy speeds too. I found out that even though it says "H" in the mortification area, it still could be 3g or even the old edge for data.
I called tmo about this last week, and the response I got was HSPA is not official in your area yet. This could be the same for you as well. Let me know what you find out.
I'm not 100% sure if HSPA+ has hit my area yet (Phoenix), it's been a while since I last checked. I don't seem to be having any speed troubles like you have stated. My best score so far is 4162 down, 599 up. Consistency is my only problem. I average anywhere between 2000 and 4000 kbps depending on my area.
Depending on what app you use I guess and location. I'm in Houston and I use mobilespeedtest.com app.
I can get most of the time 23000-26000+ Kbps and on occasion 36000+ Kbps which is blazing fast I use the 7mb test.
"mobile signal widget" will tell you what you're actually connected to, E, 3g or H.

The mobilespeedtest.com app gives out wrong speeds. You can't get those kinds of speeds with this phone. Literally, it can't support that over UMTS. Speedtest.net APP will give you legit speeds.

I think he accidentally added extra zeros.

Most of the time when i run speedtest i pulled a steady 4.5 mbps to 5mbps and some times when i just turn the phone on i can get 6.2 mbps down but w.e i do i always get a constant 1.25 to 1.3mbps up

Sorry no I did not add any extra zeros. Whether the app is correct or not I can't comment on that.
Out of curiosity what do others get with this same app? There is a obvious difference in that the mobilespeedtest app is in kbps vs the other test is in Mbps.
I also think the fact that the size of the file downloaded could have an impact on the results.

It's pointless to fine-grain compare bandwidth test results of an internet connection with a shared interface (in this case the 2G/3G air interface) since the amount of load on the interface is changing constantly. At best you could use your speed test to get in the ballpark (i.e. to confirm you are really on HSDPA) but to say 'my radio dropped my download speed from 800Kb/s to 600Kb/s' is probably erroneous because a difference of 200Kb/s is definitely well within the variation of an air interface. Unless of course you conduct a controlled experiment with both radios with many data points and you can actually draw a distinct correlation.
Edit: By the way a somewhat more accurate bandwidth test is here:
http://i.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.html
Atleast most of you have the 3g network. Here in my area of CT we only have the Edge network. I wonder what's taking tmobile so long to make it available in my area.
I generally get 400-600kbps on good 3G signal.
You're being measured by kiloBITs per second, not kiloBYTEs

Not wrong, but not accurate.
There is no accurate way of testing, as there is no constant speed.
Somedays you might get a really high measure on speed test, while you might get a low speed that is unheard of on other days.
So I mostly agree with you xDDD

b=bit B=byte, just so you know.
One should also keep in mind that bandwidth tests usually only test the speed of a single connection. As anyone who has used a multi-part download manager knows, you can usually get a higher overall throughput with multiple connections going. This seems especially the case with UMTS networks, where carriers probably throttle down individual connections to try ensuring that each user gets a fair slice of the pie.
I notice that I get the fastest speeds on my 3G when I am downloading usenet files (10 concurrent connections, each connection only downloading a few hundred kb at a time). While I might max my single connection download speed at 400 Kb/sec (50KByte/sec), I can usually get about 1.5MBit/sec when running multiple connections to a fast server. It's not the 3.6MBit/sec advertised, but not bad either.

Hello Everyone,

If I use IE browser, I get some very unrealistic results.
Also, Read My Thread Here, I think we are being throttled but T-Mobile's network limiting the RWIN.

Sam here in fairfield county, CT. Im getting 126kbps in opera mobile...even though I have an 'H' icon on the task bar! Ok cool, thanks...I just thought you were saying you had used speedtest.net, and I just cringe whenever I hear anybody referring to test results from there. I got between 256kbps to 500kbps download speed 3G . Some time less than 256kbps. It suck, I think depend the area and how far is the towers
Usually get around 1Mbps, on average, around the house. Give or take a little fluctuation.
3G, usually don't have full bars but I'm not usually paying much mind to them either. So not sure.
Just ran it from my office. I have 5 out of 6 "bars" on 3G for what it's worth. This is in Baltimore and I am pinging the Philadelphia server.
Ping: 94 ms
Download: 919 kbps
Upload: 617 kbps
Wimax doesn't do as good a job with the whole "bars" thing but they're always an estimate at best anyway. It's showing 2 out of 3 at the moment.
Ping: 135 ms
Download: 3640 kbps
Upload: 992 kbps
Typically my downloads are around 600-1000kbps on EVDO and 3000-5000 on Wimax. Uploads vary more but Wimax usually tops out around 1000-1100kbps.
Wimax in Chicago

Can we focus on 3g speeds?
I'm pretty sure I'm picking up an Evo tomorrow and these posts have been very interesting to me. I will be in 3g territory 99.8% of the time I have this phone. My sprint rep guy told me that the towers in my town are sprint towers (no idea if that really means anything,) so I'm hoping for excellent 3g data coverage here.
If anyone have any 3g reports for Beaver Dam, Wisconsin (which i'm sure you dont) feel free to post!
And if any of this doesn't make any sense, I blame it on the Ambien Walrus that is distracting me here. See below for details.
Edit: Apparently I cannot post my fabulous picture. Anyways: 3G>Madison Area>How Good???
With 4G, 1 bar, 4-5 Mbps is the usual around here. I hate the **** quality of building penetration. I don't know if that will forever be a given, but GOT DAYUM, if I could just post my phone up by the window and rock the hotspot that'd be cool ... or if when I was laying on the couch (head / phone close to window) it'd somehow pick it up. Not a huge deal.
3G though, I should start taking more speedtests (which are known to be inaccurate anyways - but I try a few to get a "somewhat" average reading. or so I hope) just to see. I see speeds that FAR outweigh what I pull in. I don't get it. 3G is solid, never experience any shortages but some places just have MAX signal?
Is everyone just using the Speedtest app that comes with the phone to determine their speeds? I had read that it gave incorrect results. Mine are all over the place, but even if I use DSlReports or SpeakEasy, the results vary significantly.
This is with my laptop wirelessly connected to my phone.

I get around 500down,250 up here on 3g. In strong Wimax areas I get around 6M down (dont recall upload speed). They seem to be getting a new tower up around me now. As these things go,they are spotty at first, then they get them fully online. When I can get a signal in my house (by putting the phone in the back rooms window) I can get around 2M down and 400K up. Im actually typing this while tethered (I rooted today and installed wifi tether.) Its working pretty good.
Ok, so I've been getting pretty good speeds with my 4G before the OTA update, around 7-8ish Mbps. This is all taken from the same place, inside my house.
After the OTA, I tried some 4G, and I was SHOCKED!

Edit: Just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating and it wasn't a fluke, I ran several more tests, the lowest score being just over 9Mbps. I'm thinking that either Sprint just flipped the "real" 4G switch, or somehow I got unthrottled 4G.

my best has been like 4Mbps.
that is with the Rooted leak though...
Niice, what kind of latency are you seeing?
I am also getting very good speeds, around 6mbps consistently while I could only get about 4mbps before in the same spot.
I'm kindof wanting to update to the 2.2 final roo just for that. I'm currently on BakedSnack 1.0

Really the only thing keeping me on this ROM is the sexy theme.

Well, I'm not gonna go THAT far, I needs mah root! haha. I'm totally going to update now though, my battery lasts a good amount with 4G on all day. and I want it to go faster!
My speeds increased too. In King of Prussia, PA I maxed out at 4 Mbps. Now I max out at 7Mbps. I'm so angry that the Lehigh Valley doesn't have WiMax yet. That's where I live
Same story here. My previous high would be in the 4 - 5 Mbps range. Last night I pulled down 8.3 Mbps. I've had the same positive results regardless of what kernel I've been running, so I would have to think this is a result of the new wimax radio.
Can you keep the speed during actual usage?
Can you keep the speed during actual usage?
I'm on 'leaked' now and speed is the same as on .47 (around 6) but say on usb tethered and skype my real transfer is super low (very low quality picture). It was perfect on 2.1.
So is it just short 'high peak' to look cool on test? Any thoughts?
Im using FreshEvo 3.1 and I also saw better speeds (previous peak was 3-4, now pulling 8-9). If I remember correctly from reading a previous post about speeds, the more activity the faster your connection should be. I'm gonna be optimistic and say they DID turn on the real 4g switch along with the new updated wimax.
My speeds have gone way up too.I'm running Fresh 3.0.3w/the stock kernel.I'm actually pretty impressed.I live in upstate NY and figured when I got the phone I probably wouldnt see any 4g coverage for a year or so

Why does everyone say this??? I watched my net usage in System Panel while I was doing my test and it's near spot on. It doesn't take your peak speed, but averages it.
I'm not trying to insult anybody. If there's something I'm missing on why the speedtest.net app isn't worth it, please enlighten me.
I don't really get it either, I'm out of 4g coverage atm but just ran some 3g tests using speakeasy and the numbers are about the same as what I've been getting from speedtest.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I used the speakeasy link here, which got the highest numbers for me at about 10.5-11Mbps depending on which server I chose.
I also use the Speedtest.net app and now get 6000 where I used to get 3500 - 4400.
Also tested using Xtremelabs speedtest app, am getting 6.5-9Mpbs now where I used to get 3.5-4.5.
