No you have to use one of the methods in the link on the second post. The D1 way won't work for the D2 Moto changed stuff so rooting is harder.

HTC devices don't use sbf, it's a Moto thing. Check in the Aria forum.

I have 3 bits of good news:
1) Yes clockworkmod exists (Droid X bootstrapper from Koush)
2) Z4root is the current root method for up to the 2.3.340 OTA update
3) Quick way to get back to stock a) generally can use appropriate SBF file for the android version you are on b) if on 2.3.340 OTA, then you can use Maderstcok's update.zip that is pre-rooted.
Take a look at my guide here:

answers all the questions and is a pretty big compilation of all things Droid X for starting out. If there is a question that you have that isn't answered there... feel free to post back and ask it, I'll get back to you with an answer, or find the answer you are looking for =)

No you will not be able to update. You will need to backup your phone using droid x bootstrap before any mods/rom's/themes so u have a place to revert back to.

You have to manually remove Superuser.apk from /system/app/ before you can root again.

Droid 2 is what you want I don't know why I just know it works.
Fixing the DX is easy. Read up on sbf if you run into issues.

when you say 'latest gingerbread' do you mean 2.3.5?
i have a rooted x on 2.2.2, and i want to apply the 2.3.5 update, but i am scared that it will break my root, if i understand correctly i can apply the update then adb shell to remove su and superuser then re-root using pete's? is that correct?
i rooted originally with superoneclick 1.9.1

Odd, I haven't come across an unrootable build for the Droid X.
Also, are you sure 2.3.5 is correct the latest version of Gingerbread for a stock Droid X is 2.3.3.

Do you know from experience/confirmation that it will work on 2.3.5, or are you just suggesting someone to try it?
Dude... just stick with what works.
Pete's one click worked for me on my dx2
I suggest you do as infazzz suggested go over to dx2 forums. After root install dx2 recovery. DO NOT use koushes bootstrap from market.
Hope that helps

Can 100% confirm this works. Was on fresh 2.3.5 stock, ran self extracting and then installed eclipse no problems.
