Hi all,
I have an O2 streak running Stephen 1.1.1 ROM. The phone is unlocked with Rebel sim to work on orange.
I am having very bad 3G connection. I am in a very well covered area and never had any problem with my old HTC touch HD.
There are 50% of times that I cannot connect to the net work. Then I have to reboot the phone for it to work, sometimes more than once. When it connected, the 3G sign turned into H and I can enjoy the full speed. But when the webpage loads and there is no traffic, the H turned back into 3G and it will take forever to reconnect if it will ever connect.
I don’t think the setting is wrong as I never changed anything. I tried following combo
Dell streak + rebel + orange sim = don’t work,
Dell streak + rebel + 3 sim = work
It doesn’t look like there is something wrong with the streak of rebel. Then I tried to put the orange back into my orange touch HD
Touch HD + orange sim = work
Touch HD + rebel + orange sim = work
So now it’s one possibility, orange sim doesn’t work with phones from other network? Is this even possible? Is anyone else been using Dell streak + rebel + orange sim combo can give me some feedback?
Many thanks.
I just thought maybe that Orange's coverage was a bit crap in my area but I've been getting really really poor data service with Orange. I've got an unlocked direct from Dell unit and I was originally on O2 and I could get almost full phone service and full data while in my room in my house (on the outskirts of town and not in the middle of no where), but then I got an Orange contract and thats just gone down the pan. Now in my room I get half phone service and even worse data which seems to only sometimes connect to 3G, all other times its just G, and when it does go 3G, it's really slow and sometimes just non responsive.
So I have no idea whether this is a compatability issue or just poor coverage, though it seems that Oranges network does need to pickup what phone your using so they can register it on their network (so they can issue you a 3G sim instead of a normal 2G sim, which was a joke when my 3G sim card died after the first day of recieving it, only for them to replace it with a 2G one and then refused to replace it with a 3G one, so I had to kick off and insist that they replace like for like....but thats another story) so it could be that since they can't register your phone on the network that you don't have full access to their data service....just a thought!

The coverage is not the problem as I live in a well covered area. The signal is always 3 or 4 bars.

This looks like the problem. As when the phone trying to connect, I can always see upload traffic but most of times no download traffic. Even when it connects, it taking much longer than it should be (when the sim is in orange touch HD or using a 3 sim).
Do you have any idea how can I solve this? Is there anything orange can do if I hassle their customer service?
I have no idea my friend, you'll just have to try. I thought maybe it was a signal issue as I am able to get it working (not at full speed but still working) when I'm out in the open in towns or cities. At the moment, I'm just guna wait a while until they have fully intergrated with T-Mobile as they are in the middle of setting up the merge of their masts. I did question that my data service has been crap compared to when I was on O2 and they just enabled me to connected to the T-Mobile masts when I can't connect to any Orange ones, but that doesn't really help not being able to use their data service properly.
The only reason why I'm using Orange is because of the amazing deal I got and that I actually get a phone signal while I'm at work (out in the middle of no where, where as with O2, I could only get 1 or 2 bars until I picked the phone up at which point I would lose it all)
me too, don't want to leave orange as I can't get my current deal anywhere else. I probably just have to get use to the bad connection.

Hello, without meaning to sound like a complete idiot, can anyone tell me if I will automatically get 3G connection on my o2 account, or do I need to contact them to enable it.
Because every time I try to make a video call, the Exec tells me that 3G is not available.
Or do I need a new SIM Card?
They sent me a new SIM Card with the Exec, but I have not fitted it. Do you think that I need to insert and activate it?
Many Thanks in Advance
Fatzzz
I also got a new SIM card when my Exec arrived and I had to call O2 to get them to activate it. They said this would happen within several hours, but in fact it happened within 5 minutes. The old card stopped working at exactly the same time, so don't go out without them both once you've called them!
You can only make video calls when your phone has locked on to the 3G network. You'll know when this has happened because you'll see a 'U' symbol next to the phone signal strength icon instead of the 'G' for GPRS. (U stands for UTMS.) Or, go to the phone dialler pad and check the network name.
Most people seem to struggle to find a 3G signal though, so it might all be a waste of time. Certainly here in Sussex I haven't found a signal yet.
Thanks SiliconS, do you know if there is a special plan to subscribe to, or will it work as long as it is in a 3G area?
Cheers
Fatzzz
I contacted O2 today to ask the same question (as well as get my new plan confirmed).
I was advised that I would need a new sim, which has been ordered and should be sent out soon, and once that sim arrives, I need to contact O2 and get them to enable the new SIM and disable the old one.
What they then advised me is that 3G would be used whenever it is available.
It'll work in Liverpool where I work, but from what I've seen, St Helens, where I live, won't work just now but is planned for future expansion although there is no date.
To be honest I doubt I'll use it too much as I permanently activesync with my laptop via Bluetooth and use that as an Internet connection.
Once a decent push email solution has been delivered I'll probably rely on 3G a bit more.
In London, I get U everywhere I go, don't know about other areas. It was rather amusing when the train passed Hither Green the U changed to G for about 10 secs then switched back to U again. So does it mean the transmitter somewhere near Hither Green doesn't support 3G?
it could just be that the signal wasn't strong enough to support UTMS.
For example, if I go into the office at work I usually end up on GPRS, yet if I go near a window I can use UTMS just fine.
Hope this helps.

Check you O2 coverage
I am right on the edge of a coverage area however i am in dark blue but i get a very week signal from O2s UMTS network and a very strong signal from their GSM network.
I have real problems with using a data connection as i keep switching between the 2 networks and there is a delay while it does it. Also MSNM is really bad when it does this. At the moment i have set my Exec to just use the GSM network and ignore the UMTS one.
well I ordered a new sim from o2 to get 3g on my jasjar, and they sent me a normal gsm one (I didn't notice at the time, ended up hard resetting just to make sure I hasn't disabled it somehow!) So check when the SIM arrives that got 3G written on the side with the bubbles and not GSM! I infact ended up going to the O2 shop and getting one from there.

I(m currently switching between GSM and 3g - however i gprs seems to work fine for browsing however 3g does not seem to be working for browsing but ok for calls!! Im in the birmingham area where 3g coverage is normally superb - is anyone experiencing similar problems or know a possible way to resolve? I soft reset doesnt resolve the issue!
I am in T-Mobile UK and have no problems so sorry cannot offer advice - is surfing with GPRS OK? I have found T-Mobile customer support very good - give them a try. Their tech support people seem to know what they are talking about which is nice too - much different to O2. Good luck
PS - if not tried then take a look at the excellent plug-in by Daniel Herrero here. I doubt it will fix this problem but it saves lots of battery power and is very configurable.
I have exactly the same problem. 3g is really slow for surfing and GPRS is so much faster. In fact a lot of the the time on 3g I just get error messages saying the page is not available etc but if I then switch to GSM it loads in a second.
I have found something weird though: If I switch the phone off or go in to comm manager and switch the line connection off then try to surf or download on 3g it will not work.
If however, I switch the phone or the connection on then switch to gsm, and then to UMTS/3g it will surf on 3g.
For this I use Daniel Herrero's excellent program to fast switch.
but even this method sometimes doesn't work.
What I've resorted to is surfing on GPRS and when I need to download something, quickly switch (using Dan's Program) to 3g.
Am I right in thinking the no 3g connection after being switched on is a known issue with the Hermes?
HI JPHCCFC
Im in Birmingham on t-mobile and for the past two ...three days i to have had trouble connecting to the web or msn...very slow or no connection
Gavin
cheers for the info guys - im thinking that maybe its a 3g network error in the area - anybody who isnt experiencing problems in the birmingham area with 3g Data?
still no data 3g in the birmingham area....or is it my handset??? Gav1n how is your data 3g performing?
Im in manchester and i seem to have the same problem with 3g being much slower for browsing than the standard gprs
I'm getting the same issues in East surrey
phoned customer services they said they had no reported errors with the 3g network! they said try the sim swap with another tmobile sim to see if its the handset or network!
hi im still the same no 3G ....in brum (quinton) when i change the band to gsm every is thing is ok....its the same on my wifes phone ...so deff a t-moible thing...

3G connection issues on TMobile-Vario2
Dear all,
Appears the south-east also has the same type of connection issues. Everything appeared well until about 7-10 days back.
I e-mailed T-Mobile support and they advised that there were some network issues which could have impacted the service. I did notice that their on-line account services had also been upgraded around the same time period - maybe a coincidence - but every since then the phone doesn't seem to surf properly on the 3G service. AND, battery life goes down dramatically - I only now manage to get about a day's use out of the damn phone!
I've got a replacement battery from T-Mobile - but same thing happens. I think it's all inter-related!
So what's the solution anyone? 'cos I am getting rather hacked off with it all!
I'm getting hacked off with really bad now.
My grps is faster than 3g. Period. Regardless of reception. Anyone got a solution???
try disabling hsdpa with hermes tweaker and reboot your phone.make sure you are not connected to gprs while disabling it. it has solved my problems.
3G connection issues on TMobile-Vario2
Same here in the Canary Wharf area for the last 7-10 days. First I blamed my radio rom - I have upgraded to 1.34.00.10 when the problem started. But then I have also tried 1.27 and few older ones - all the same problem. Fast grps, but no 3G. The battery also dies quite fast on 3g, so I have now switched to GSM only. :-(
Don't know if any of you have done this already but I was having the 3G problems for a couple of weeks and battery was draining quickly, I phoned up T-Mobile and asked them if HSPDA was turned on on my account which it wasn't, since they turned it on the problems have disappeared and my connection speed is now at least 750 kbs.
3G issues
i have had my t-mobile for over a week now, but in the shop they said there was no 3G in edgbaston, birmingham but when i got it home i connected quite easily
3g dns failures
I have had a t-mobile vario 2 for the last 5 months. when I first got the phone I was excited to get the hsdpa activated and quickly phoned up tmobile and got through to a tech guy who activated it. I didnt really notice much speed improvement and tmobile only shows the 3g and not the h for hsdpa, but I was pretty happy with my speeds of around 70kbit/sec (tested through http://text.dslreports.com/myspeed?jisok=1). I downloaded fieldtest_157 which showed that I was connected to hsdpa but the values showed through hsdpa cqi status were very low.
About 1 month ago I was suddenly unable to go online whenever my phone went into 3g mode, my phone would show it connected but wouldn’t find any addresses. I was only able to when it switched to gsm. I phoned tmobile to get the problem fixed. they said it was a known issue with the phone and made me permenantly switch my phone to the gsm network. I was basically told that my phone does not support 3g and hangs on switching from gsm to 3g for no apparent reason and that they were working on the problem. they must have done something on their side because when I switched to phone back on to auto network switching, I got gsm and 3g connectivity and downloads but not hsdpa (checked with fieldtest_157)
next day because I was unhappy with the download speed I phoned tmobile and asked for hsdpa reactivation. the first level who answered made me hang on and reactivated hsdpa. same problem cant download except on gsm switch. rephoned tmobile and got through to another 2nd level tech guy and explained all my connection problems.he said that my phone had never been hsdpa connected and connected it for me. what do you know Im suddenly getting 950kbit/sec speeds and hsdpa cqi status shows all high teens or 20's. for some reason my battery is lasting allot longer and 5 months after getting the phone Im happy. moral of the story is to download fieldtest_157 from:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index...e=Hermes_Utils
and check hsdpa status because either lots of bull is being told to tmobile customers or there are some pretty stupid people working there.
I was getting lots of dns failures (except in gsm) and getting really fraustrated. I was going to ask for deactivation of hsdpa. Luckily the technician I spoke to (about the tenth person in 3 days) that eventually got me connected, new his stuff. He tried to trick me into admitting that I was using my phone as a modem for my computer and only connected me after I denied it. after he changed something on his side, he made me pull out my battery and do a soft reset. Everythings now how I expected when I bought the phone. It might sound like conspiracy theory but I got the feeling that he only connected me when it sounded like I knew slightly more than the average Joe. My hsdpa connection has been faultless ever since. Getting consistently high speeds even with 1 bar. On 3g!!
I had low fieldtest numbers before my proper activation. now all much higher teens or twentys
keep phoning tmobile until the problem is fixed!! and speak to someone who doesnt have to read a set of respone instructions and has some real knowledge.
Hope this helps
Cheers craig
No 3G in Glasgow. Was fine until 7-10 days ago. Phoned T-Mobile and the guy said they knew of problems. Asked for HSDPA to be activated, he claimed to have done this but no difference. Another post implies that they might not actually enable HSDPA first time of asking.
I bought the phone for 3G. It clearly has nothing to do with the handset since it worked fine for 3 months. Can I make a claim against T-Mobile?
i activated HSDPA and this resolved the issue for me!
My phone wont recieve any sms for ages. Then as soon as i make a call, i recieve loads and also missed call alerts. As far as i am aware i have reception (its at work and i have always has it).
Anyone else get this?
I also get this occasionaly, used to be worse but has got better...
i had this too - i think it's somehow related to what Band your phone is set to recieve.. i have a very weak 3G signal at home, which means the phone is hopping between HSDPA, 3G, and G the whole time, and the missed calls / data occur when the phone is auto changing the bands.
so, i changed my settings from Automatic to GMS band, and this appears to have resolved the problem.
perhaps this might be the same for you.
does this GMS thing affect 3g, RSS updates etc?
grr dont get me started on orange just had to get my trading standards friend to sort orange out for me, while connected to 3g in my local area i miss calls and its hard to make calls but 2g and 3g away from my area is fine, so i got my last 6 months of data bundle refunded and the data bundle cancled at £7.90 for 250 mb a month ( which is a total ripp off ) as i was given 3 options, 1 keep your phone switched to 2g networks only ( no because the internet speed is a joke on 2g ) send us your phone back and well cancle your contract with no buyout fee ( ummm no ) or continue as you are ( ummm no ) so the out come was a full refund on the data pack, data pack cancled as orange is a joke for internet access anyway, 250 mb max tarrif huu i can chew that up in a day and now i keep my phone on the 2g network, i will ride my contract out then cancel orange sim unlock my phone and move to another provider with a much better internet package
Orange are a complete joke at the moment - I really used to like them out of all the carriers but their standards and quality of service is disintegrating on a daily basis it seems.
Current issue with them: I had my phone cut off for non-payment of bill last week - that's despite providing them with my bank details TWICE and them saying they would put a note on the account that would stop any disconnection notice going through while they sort it out.
Hey! and guess what - they have no record of any bank details for me, no notes on my account and they actually said that it was my fault because I hadn't told my bank to set up the direct debit!!!
Needless to say I will be leaving Orange ASAP.
Orange let me down badly a couple of years ago but they persuaded me to stay. I now have a touch HD with unlimited data (and I do mean the 3gb per month business data package) totally free. With 1200 mins, 400 texts, unlimited landline calls all for £40 a month I am not complaining.
My diamond had rubbish signal on 3g but the hd is fine.
am on orange too!
weak signal at my work and home! (even though the website says i should)
never had an issue wit text messages but often get missed calls!
has anyone on orange updated to the new ROM? I know its not officially released for us but through xda software
Same problem with Orange
My Touch HD rarely gets a good signal from Orange. Their nearest mast is 7 mins walk away but because of a tall building I connect to a mast on a hill 1.8Kms away. But then when I park next to their mast I still get a weak signal. I get a 500mb data package plus unlimited txts and 10 hours of calls for £30 per month. To be honest the poor signal that i constantly experience with Orange despite the messing around means that it might be my last contract with them unless they buck up
I too am on Orange with my Touch HD and often get missed calls and a bantle of SMS messages and voice mails coming through at once even though I seem to have a fairly OK signal.
Signal is pretty much OK when I'm at work or out and about, but signal at home is wildly variable, switching constantly between nothing, slight, GPRS, Edge and 3G (never get HSDPA at home) so this backs up what 'orangewarrior' said in an earlier reply.
My missus uses an Orange branded HTC Touch Dual (Nike) which is even worse - she can hardly ever use it when within about 2 miles of our house.
By contrast, I never had such problems wih my old Orange SPV M700 (HTC P3600/Trinity). Signal was generally stable (stock Orange ROM, no Radio upgrades or anything).
I've also noticed that I get more dropped calls when the Touch HD is cradled up and ActiveSync'd. People calling me report that it goes straight to voicemail. Has anyone else noticed this?
I'm using the stock Orange issue with no cooked anything.
just updated to the latest rom
signal seems better! always on H, no moving from H to G then to E (network operator is now 3G orange and not just orange)
had a few calls and seemed fine, text messages are fine (never had an issue with them before)
will give it a try at work tomorrow and home again and let yous know how I get on.

same contract as mine, i get decent reception like 2bars in out of reach area where reception is suppose to be bad, but if your on 02, u will get max reception, this is in comparison to a work coleague of mine, who is on 02 and me orange same room, i have 2 bars he has full, i'm still able to use net, send/receive msgs, email the usual, but guys are right orange a bag of shiit at the moment very poor coverage compared to 02. i was a previously on 02
well i have duttys ROm , the latest , im at work on Thursday. Thats where it happens for some reason, so i guess ill find out there.
My signal is also pants on any motorway!!
i am on orange and always have good 3g signal never get any problems and just pay £10 for 200mins unlimited texts with my htc touch hd , cudnt b happier
I have a standard Touch HD Wm 6.1 bought from Mobiles (CPW) on O2 contract. It works fine. I came to Australia and bought a Telstra Prepay SIM with Browse data bundle. In Sydney, no problem.
Drive to Laurieton 2443 NSW and data connection is unreliable. Seems to keep dropping out and won't come back unless I soft reset. Affects email, Skype, weather update.
Even when I'm not actually doing anything, I can watch the signal bars and they will cycle from 1 to 2 maybe 3 then disappear, the phone will try to logon and get the "Y" antenna, then try to connect to data and you get the smaller E and the two left/right arrows and may get a connection.
Might work for a while then craps out and needs device reset again. It didn't do this down in Sydney. When connected to laptop and used as a internet sharing modem, seems more stable (otherwise I couldn't have written this post).
Any ideas?
3G (NextG) coverage not quite as good as Telstra said
It's probably nothing to do with the Touch HD at all. Bod in the local PC shop (say hi to Bruce Dunlop Comuters of Laurieton) said I'd be lucky to get a 3G signal round here at all. I guess the behaviour I was seeing was the Touch HD trying its best in a very fringe area.
So when the Telstra guy looked up Laurieton and said they had good coverage of Laurieton, what he should have said was .....
Solution? Get a wifi router and leech off your Mum's broadband (worked for me )

I'm pretty sure you have a T8282 which has hardware that uses the bandwidths in the UK (and other parts of the world). Telstra uses some different bandwidths and so you are only able to access some of them. If you want proper coverage in Australia then you will need to get a T8285.
Hi All,
Done a quick search on this and can't find anything relevent, but i apologise if a thread already exists.
Really a question for those in the UK on the t-mobile network. Have any of you attempted to sign up for the orange 2g roaming service yet? I signed up, recieved the confirmation text, replied to it, and received the final confirmation. However, I'm not sure it's working. The signal seems no stronger, and i still drop in my house.
Obviously i'm posting this in the android section because i'm running android myself and am wondering whether anyone in the same boat has managed to get roaming to work. Should the fact that we're on a non-official OS running off the sd card make a difference?
Oh and for completeness, i'm running shubcraft 1.5 rmnet.
Cheers fellas!
I'm quite happily flip flopping between Orange while at work and T-Mobile for everything else...
works like a charm for me though you do have to stick the phone into Airplane mode after selecting the different provider for the data to work ...

Many thanks for the reply Jezwick. So, just for clarity, you're manually selecting each provider as and when required? Because i can do that, i think. When i select orange though, whilst it registers with the network fine, i get a little "R" above the signal bar (any ideas what that means?) And the speed appears to be limited to Edge. Orange have a very strong signal round here, so i figure i should be getting GPRS really.
It's the auto-switching i'm not totally sure is working really. Is there any explicit indicator that it's flipping on it's own? Or do you just observe a generally better 2g signal, rather than say, a very weak 3g one? Round the house, my phone is still trying to make do with 1 or zero bars of 3g. I would have hoped it would flip over to orange more or less all the time under those circumstances. Nothing to stop me manually selecting it i guess though...

The R is indeed for roaming that's the way it works if your not on your 'own' network.. The 'flipped' service will currently only work at GRPS speeds at the moment but should be 3G by the new year
I have noticed mine flipping automatically but only once or twice in the last few weeks but only when I get NO signal from the current service.

Understood - thanks for the info Just done some reading and apparently EDGE is faster than basic GPRS. For some reason, i'd always assumed the reverse. Looks like the best option is just to have it always on orange whilst at home and use wifi for data (which i do anyway to compensate for the poor signal). Cheers!
