I have a standard Touch HD Wm 6.1 bought from Mobiles (CPW) on O2 contract. It works fine. I came to Australia and bought a Telstra Prepay SIM with Browse data bundle. In Sydney, no problem.
Drive to Laurieton 2443 NSW and data connection is unreliable. Seems to keep dropping out and won't come back unless I soft reset. Affects email, Skype, weather update.
Even when I'm not actually doing anything, I can watch the signal bars and they will cycle from 1 to 2 maybe 3 then disappear, the phone will try to logon and get the "Y" antenna, then try to connect to data and you get the smaller E and the two left/right arrows and may get a connection.
Might work for a while then craps out and needs device reset again. It didn't do this down in Sydney. When connected to laptop and used as a internet sharing modem, seems more stable (otherwise I couldn't have written this post).
Any ideas?
3G (NextG) coverage not quite as good as Telstra said
It's probably nothing to do with the Touch HD at all. Bod in the local PC shop (say hi to Bruce Dunlop Comuters of Laurieton) said I'd be lucky to get a 3G signal round here at all. I guess the behaviour I was seeing was the Touch HD trying its best in a very fringe area.
So when the Telstra guy looked up Laurieton and said they had good coverage of Laurieton, what he should have said was .....
Solution? Get a wifi router and leech off your Mum's broadband (worked for me )

I'm pretty sure you have a T8282 which has hardware that uses the bandwidths in the UK (and other parts of the world). Telstra uses some different bandwidths and so you are only able to access some of them. If you want proper coverage in Australia then you will need to get a T8285.

Hello, without meaning to sound like a complete idiot, can anyone tell me if I will automatically get 3G connection on my o2 account, or do I need to contact them to enable it.
Because every time I try to make a video call, the Exec tells me that 3G is not available.
Or do I need a new SIM Card?
They sent me a new SIM Card with the Exec, but I have not fitted it. Do you think that I need to insert and activate it?
Many Thanks in Advance
Fatzzz
I also got a new SIM card when my Exec arrived and I had to call O2 to get them to activate it. They said this would happen within several hours, but in fact it happened within 5 minutes. The old card stopped working at exactly the same time, so don't go out without them both once you've called them!
You can only make video calls when your phone has locked on to the 3G network. You'll know when this has happened because you'll see a 'U' symbol next to the phone signal strength icon instead of the 'G' for GPRS. (U stands for UTMS.) Or, go to the phone dialler pad and check the network name.
Most people seem to struggle to find a 3G signal though, so it might all be a waste of time. Certainly here in Sussex I haven't found a signal yet.
Thanks SiliconS, do you know if there is a special plan to subscribe to, or will it work as long as it is in a 3G area?
Cheers
Fatzzz
I contacted O2 today to ask the same question (as well as get my new plan confirmed).
I was advised that I would need a new sim, which has been ordered and should be sent out soon, and once that sim arrives, I need to contact O2 and get them to enable the new SIM and disable the old one.
What they then advised me is that 3G would be used whenever it is available.
It'll work in Liverpool where I work, but from what I've seen, St Helens, where I live, won't work just now but is planned for future expansion although there is no date.
To be honest I doubt I'll use it too much as I permanently activesync with my laptop via Bluetooth and use that as an Internet connection.
Once a decent push email solution has been delivered I'll probably rely on 3G a bit more.
In London, I get U everywhere I go, don't know about other areas. It was rather amusing when the train passed Hither Green the U changed to G for about 10 secs then switched back to U again. So does it mean the transmitter somewhere near Hither Green doesn't support 3G?
it could just be that the signal wasn't strong enough to support UTMS.
For example, if I go into the office at work I usually end up on GPRS, yet if I go near a window I can use UTMS just fine.
Hope this helps.

Check you O2 coverage
I am right on the edge of a coverage area however i am in dark blue but i get a very week signal from O2s UMTS network and a very strong signal from their GSM network.
I have real problems with using a data connection as i keep switching between the 2 networks and there is a delay while it does it. Also MSNM is really bad when it does this. At the moment i have set my Exec to just use the GSM network and ignore the UMTS one.
well I ordered a new sim from o2 to get 3g on my jasjar, and they sent me a normal gsm one (I didn't notice at the time, ended up hard resetting just to make sure I hasn't disabled it somehow!) So check when the SIM arrives that got 3G written on the side with the bubbles and not GSM! I infact ended up going to the O2 shop and getting one from there.

So when I leave all the band settings to auto on the phone, it immediately connects to AT&T's 3G network and shows the "H" in the title bar it worked for a little while then calls stopped coming through, after a hard reset it works again with calls for a few hours, then it begins to fail.
If I switch the bands to GSM and manually select the frequencies (850 + 1900, according to wm) then it connects to the EDGE network, and I can make and receive calls as I please, no problems, except for the crappy network speed.
So someone help me out here please, is the phone defective, or is it not working as it should because of the lack of the 850 band? I know that AT&T works on either or but this problem has me stumped.
Other than this rather huge problem (phone that cant make calls), I absolutely love the Xperia and would hate to return and wait for another.
did you try to use the connection wizard to let the phone config itself?
after I put my iphone sim in it shows the H/3G icon on anf off all the time, while I can receive call I was unable to go online.... after someone suggested me to call att to update the imei on my account to the x1, I found that I still have to go to connection and change the setting myself b4 it can go online. you will have to remove the user name and pw in media net setting and uncheck the proxy server.
I guess my case is a little different than yours but I guess you can give it a try... good luck =)
Thanks, I actually haven't tried that since i figured it would be the same as what happens when you turn the phone on for the first time, when it autoconfigs.
if it say it detect a new sim and ask if you want to do the auto config then I guess its the same... but again I did need to change some settings inside the network config to make it work too... so I am guessing the "auto config" has some flaw in it
No problem with my X1i when I venture in a1900mhz area close to my home. I live in a small town in Ca. only 850mhz here. But in the larger Metro area around me... No Problems with calls or hspeed data access...
Stuart
Thanks for the replies, It looks like the Configuration wizard in the settings menu did the trick. It do something else that the autoconfig doesnt. The phone seems to work now just fine, although it doesnt hang on to the signal as well as my old k790a. The office I work in is an ATT dead zone and I could make calls using the K790a with only one bar, with the Xperia it either doesnt go through or drops the call.
Again this is better as it works now, just not as well as my old phone.
Also, scl_electronics, so you are saying the X1i has both 850 and 1900mhz bands? I had a feeling mine did too, but I thought it was put to rest that that wasnt the case with the X1i....
Sorry Aaron J,
i should have been more specific!! Where I live, 3G is only on 850mhz band so I don't get access..Just The edge network. When I venture about 10 mile away toward the major Metro areas..The 1900mhz band are used. So the H is displayed, but I don't have those access problems for calls or data!!
But i am waiting to see if they can crack the rom for 850mhz-3G access!!

Oh ok thats kind of makes, sense although I thought the X1i didnt have an 850 band at all, so what frequency does it work off then?
Anyways, back to my problem....I spoke too soon, it dont work on 3G switched to EDGE. I might just try getting a new sim card, mine is a Cingular one from 2005, that has been in at least 4 different phones now including the X1i.

Well out here in Ca... 850mhz gsm/edge is used ..So I quad band gsm phone is handy!!!
Stuart
Yes it is! My little problem is a little confusing though as one thing I just realized that I didnt say before is that the phone has no problem connecting to the 3G network using HSDPA. I get full bars with the H icon pretty much everywhere in my area and my data speeds are very good. So I can surf the net, download programs, watch high quality youtube videos using the app in touchflo and even send and receive texts just fine.....just no calls when on 3G. I'm hoping its just setting somewhere and not a faulty device.
I live in Raleigh NC by the way so maybe it could be a faulty tower?
Well when venture into Stockton Ca. my phone switches to 3G-HSDPA:1900MHZ Without a connection hitch....
Have you tried a soft reset......
But when all else fails Hard Reset to the Rescue!!!
Btw... in several of my ppc-wm units when restoring to OEM setting(hard reset) there has been many time the process had a problem. So something would be screwed up!! So when You don't succeed, try another hard reset!!
Good luck,
Stuart
hey i was wonder if your problem is HSDPA/HSUPA being on, i have at&t also and it worked for the first few weeks fine with it being on then all of a sudden it stopped and couldn't connect to the internet, before i had the H/Edge showing up and also my email never updated when it was set to do it every 15minutes. Now that i disable the HSDPA/HSUPA i see 3G/Edge and email update all the time on the X1i. Just wonder if that might fix it, I'm all kinda still new to all this but i had my X1i for 2 1/2 weeks now.
Hello thanks for all the suggestions, Experiaenjoy, no I haven't tried mainly because I can connect to the data network just fine and get awesome speeds with full bars pretty much everywhere, all of my data related activities and programs work just fine (aka murder my battery life ). I just cant make calls while on 3G.
I talked to a coworker today who used to be a regional manager at AT&T hee said that he saw many cases of people who were having problems where it was due to the SIM card. He said they all had the older orange Cingular card and that an update to the new blue AT&T card solved all problems. So right now I'm trying to see if I can get mine updated (I do have an older Cingular SIM). Once I get that, I will do a hard reset (3rd one also done about 20 soft resets since I 've had it-I've installed a bunch of programs and tweaks) and skip the auto config and go straight to the connection wizard.
I know that there is a data outage on o2 at the moment, but my touch HD won't even make calls as no mobile service is being received and it just keeps searching for a network. My crappy old k750i that is also on 02 works just fine and picks up the network signal with no problems, so i've no idea why my touch hd won't.
Any suggestions?
Just checked with my HD on O2 all working fine. Data is only available through GPRS at my home location but call and browsing are all working.
I have heard of cell towers going offline and such it may be that your nearest cell is offline and the k750 is using one the HD wont reach. I dont know how good the HD is yet for weak signals maybe someone else will offer some thoughts

I have a touch hd with o2. both data and calling features are working fine here. maybe you have a phone locked to another network or maybe your radio is not compatible with your rom, if you have flashed...
Mine's all fine too...
Thanks for your input guys. I'm on the default rom so it shouldn't be a radio issue. Just turned on again this morning and there is still no service at all on my HD, but full signal on my k750
All OK in Leeds.
Possibly your K750i is using GSM and your Touch HD is trying to use 3G and failing, and for some reason not picking up a GSM signal instead. (Or Vice Versa?)
Try forcing your Touch HD to a specific network:
Start > Settings > Phone > "Band" Tab and change the network type to GSM or UMTS, depending on your situation. Then at least you can narrow the problem down to either 3G or GSM.
thanks for your input
I've switched the band from auto to GSM
and GSM/UMTS band to UMTS (2100) + GSM (900+1800) as i think this is what O2 use and there is still no signal
just checked any my k750 doesn't have 3g features. The sim from the k750 doesn't work in my HD either, but the sim from my HD does work in the k750, so both sim cards are working just fine.
I think you might have to start considering the fact that your Touch HD is faulty.
http://service.europe.htc.com/
Sorry bud.
yeah, looks that way doesn't it
I'm not on O2 but I think there may be a setting somewhere where you can specify voice calls get channelled through the 2G network. I imagine if 3G is down (shame on O2) and your voice is being forced through the 3G network, then you wouldn't get voice coverage.
Also, it's worth going to some other area (with known coverage) and trying out there. May be it's just your local mast ?
Have been out and about testing today and it does look like a local issue now. My touch hd seems to work fine in other areas, but won't work at all at home, whereas my old k750 works fine everywhere.
I'm now getting a signal on o2 at home, but can't dial out as it just sits there saying 'dialing' all the time
If you have any friends with XDA's, get them to try from your location (perhaps using your SIM). If they're getting the same experience, then raise a SIM or network fault.
May also be worth playing around with the Phone Settings Menu.
Have just got off the phone with O2, they are saying that my local transmitter is flagged as being down and it should be back up and running by 2-30 this afternoon.
Must be that the reception receiver on my old k750 is miles better than the one in the HD then, as that still shows many bars and can make and receive calls without problem
If you're not getting a connection, then disable 3G, GSM voice calls are pretty much 24/7, excluding emergencies. Routine mast work is carried out during the night hours, and you still usually get an adjacent transmitter. Even during work, you can usually get either one of 2G or 3G.
If you can't connect during the day, that's a sign of mast failure, so unless anyone here is within 20km of you, asking here is unlikely to help. If more than a town is affected, you can be sure there'll be a press release.
If all else fails, call your network, only they will have the latest info. Maybe the mast has a fault which doesn't show up on their systems - unless somebody tells them, they won't know
Hello All,
We are from Australia and I have an HTC Hermes equivalent and my boss has a HTC touch pro 2. We are working in the UK and have a Vodafone prepaid sim (also known as pay as you go).
They have a webpack so you can get Internet access for 50p per day. You get this by sending a text with WEBPACK to 97613.
I have enabled mine and works perfectly but my bosses doesn't (HTC touch pro 2).
I have compared the connection settings and these are the same. I have also swapped SIM cards and the Internet works on my phone with my bosses SIM but not my bosses phone hence the problem is with the phone itself.
The HTC touch pro 2 is a few years newer than mine and the hardware supports all the bands/frequencies mine does + more.
I have gone into the phone options and checked the network and band settings but the same.
The only difference I have noticed is on the phone display, mine says UMTS Vodafone UK where my bosses displays 3G Vodafone UK
Also on my phone it displays the 3G signal in the top centre of the taskbar and when I connect to the Internet after a few seconds of trying to connect, this changes to H that is HSDPA and the Internet connection is connected. (it sometimes switches back to 3G but usually connects with the H symbol.
Now with my bosses, it displays 3G but after a few seconds of trying to connect, it doesn't try HSDPA but just fails and shows a connection error.
We are in the centre of Manchester so not sure why his will not connect and my older phone will without failure.
Is there any settings that I am missing or is there a reason why my bosses HTC touch pro 2 will not try to connected on the HSDPA band?
Thanks
Matt
Hi all,
I have an O2 streak running Stephen 1.1.1 ROM. The phone is unlocked with Rebel sim to work on orange.
I am having very bad 3G connection. I am in a very well covered area and never had any problem with my old HTC touch HD.
There are 50% of times that I cannot connect to the net work. Then I have to reboot the phone for it to work, sometimes more than once. When it connected, the 3G sign turned into H and I can enjoy the full speed. But when the webpage loads and there is no traffic, the H turned back into 3G and it will take forever to reconnect if it will ever connect.
I don’t think the setting is wrong as I never changed anything. I tried following combo
Dell streak + rebel + orange sim = don’t work,
Dell streak + rebel + 3 sim = work
It doesn’t look like there is something wrong with the streak of rebel. Then I tried to put the orange back into my orange touch HD
Touch HD + orange sim = work
Touch HD + rebel + orange sim = work
So now it’s one possibility, orange sim doesn’t work with phones from other network? Is this even possible? Is anyone else been using Dell streak + rebel + orange sim combo can give me some feedback?
Many thanks.
I just thought maybe that Orange's coverage was a bit crap in my area but I've been getting really really poor data service with Orange. I've got an unlocked direct from Dell unit and I was originally on O2 and I could get almost full phone service and full data while in my room in my house (on the outskirts of town and not in the middle of no where), but then I got an Orange contract and thats just gone down the pan. Now in my room I get half phone service and even worse data which seems to only sometimes connect to 3G, all other times its just G, and when it does go 3G, it's really slow and sometimes just non responsive.
So I have no idea whether this is a compatability issue or just poor coverage, though it seems that Oranges network does need to pickup what phone your using so they can register it on their network (so they can issue you a 3G sim instead of a normal 2G sim, which was a joke when my 3G sim card died after the first day of recieving it, only for them to replace it with a 2G one and then refused to replace it with a 3G one, so I had to kick off and insist that they replace like for like....but thats another story) so it could be that since they can't register your phone on the network that you don't have full access to their data service....just a thought!

The coverage is not the problem as I live in a well covered area. The signal is always 3 or 4 bars.

This looks like the problem. As when the phone trying to connect, I can always see upload traffic but most of times no download traffic. Even when it connects, it taking much longer than it should be (when the sim is in orange touch HD or using a 3 sim).
Do you have any idea how can I solve this? Is there anything orange can do if I hassle their customer service?
I have no idea my friend, you'll just have to try. I thought maybe it was a signal issue as I am able to get it working (not at full speed but still working) when I'm out in the open in towns or cities. At the moment, I'm just guna wait a while until they have fully intergrated with T-Mobile as they are in the middle of setting up the merge of their masts. I did question that my data service has been crap compared to when I was on O2 and they just enabled me to connected to the T-Mobile masts when I can't connect to any Orange ones, but that doesn't really help not being able to use their data service properly.
The only reason why I'm using Orange is because of the amazing deal I got and that I actually get a phone signal while I'm at work (out in the middle of no where, where as with O2, I could only get 1 or 2 bars until I picked the phone up at which point I would lose it all)
me too, don't want to leave orange as I can't get my current deal anywhere else. I probably just have to get use to the bad connection.
