New to Android, need a little help - Desire HD General

Just got my DHD and loving it and feels a good upgrade from my HD2. My question is can you use your own sounds for notifications eg texts and emails also can you browse contents of the memory card too?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

on your SD card create a folder called Media. Within that one called audio and then 3 folders in that called alarms notifications and ringtones. Then put the sounds you want to use in each one.
As browsing the folders on the phone, download an app called astro file manager from the market and use that

For ringtones, dump all your music wherever you like. In the Sense Music player, press Menu on the track you want to use and there is a 'Set as ringtone' option. Saves you having to create that awful directory structure.
If that doesn't work then download Rings Extended from Market and you can use that to add options to your Menus to allow you to make mp3s, etc as ringtones.
For notification sounds you'll need to create the following directories:
/Android/media/audio/alarms
/Android/media/audio/notifications
Hope that helps,
Yao

What I said then to be fair

Thanks for the quick responses will give them a try when I get home, that should make the phone one step closer to how I want it. Other than that very happy with the phone and Android as this is my first experience of it

Notification Sounds

I downloaded an app called RingsExtender which allows you to choose sounds other than the default sounds ("Look At Me", "Captain's Log", etc) for your notification sounds for GMail, SMS, Google Talk, etc. However, I was wondering, does anyone know a good website or anywhere where I can find notification sounds as .mp3s or .wavs?

just look around. google wavs. i personally download mario sound effect. i really like the yoshi sound
I need an app like that but I can't fnd it. anybody got the apk?
I used that app before until I've realized (read somewhere on the forum) that all you need to do is put sound files into notifications or ringtones folder on your SD card and then they will appear in the list of sounds when you choose new sound for apps.
As for sounds just Google it -- there are plenty of sound resources on the web.
Ringdroid will allow you to cut a piece of an MP3 and save it as a notification or ring. Is that what you're looking for?
do they have to be in .ogg format to work? andexplorer won't let me copy/paste wavs or mp3 into the system folders.
I also have a question on this( sort of)
Where can I get the default ringtones? I think they got removed on cyanogens roms.. but I actually liked some of them. Help? Or pm me. Thanks!
Sorry double post
http://www.zedge.net/
Hands down the best ringtone site Ive come across.
Free , LOTS to choose from , and seems to have a userbase uploading some unique ones.

There is a link to Audio Resources in the first post of the cyanogen stable rom thread. That contains everything removed plus more.

I gave you the wrong info here it is actually..
media/audio/ringtones
media/audio/notifications
I keep my notification sounds on my ext3 partition, because the phone can still acess them when the fat32 partition is mounted in your computer.
All you have to do is push the media folder to /system/sd although I did make to make all the folders manually, only took a couple of minutes though, and the sounds show up on the phone just like they would on the fat32 partition.

No ringtones for incoming calls froyo 2.2

Alternative solution would be to select a music a (from Music folder) do a "long press". Then, this music could be selected as your "Ring tone".
Hope it helps.
when I do that I only get: Open, Open With, Send to, Cut, Copy, Shortcut, Delete, Rename and Properties..
oh and it did not work from the settings menu, only thing to choose there was quiet mode.

copy and paste this link into your internet browser http://gamesquare.co.uk/media.zip ,then unzip it, place the media folder under your root of sdcard (for example, sdcard/media)
Zedge
I use a program called Zedge from the marketplace. It allows you to search for ringtones and wallpapers. Once you download a ringtone, it will be selectable in the sound options.
zedge worked awesomely Thanks they even had the ringtone I wanted

[Q] Restrict Sense Music scan to one folder? Froyo 2.2 Sense

Hi there, I've been using a Froyo 2.2 Sense Build (not exactly sure which one anymore) for a while now with no stability issues, even Robovoice just being a problem in certain situations, not always.
So it is pretty much an almost complete WinMo replacement if it wasn't for two things;
Sense Music app is displaying all sounds (even from games etc) in the tracks list. all my music used to sit in the "music" folder on the root of my SD card. Now i put the music folder into the media folder that was created by android.
I still get all audio files there. (I also get every ringtone triple btw) Please advise.
The other thing is skype, but that isn't an android issue just Skype LLC/Ebay effing with the users and not seeing the light. Damn them until they do.
nope use meridian.. it is a good music and video app.
Very simple solution fro Froyo. Just create a file named .nomedia and put in any folder u want to exclude scanning.

[Q] Ringtones... Seriously...

I have tried many different ways to get my custom ringtones onto my mt4g but everything has failed so far. Please if anyone isnt laughing to hard at this post and would like to help drop a line. How do you get ringtones onto this device!
ummm make a folder called "ringtones" on your sdcard and voila... I is 99% sure of this... I will edit with the right info I'm wrong as Ihave some on my phone but my phone is so very very far away (50+ feet OMG)
Weirdly enough I did indeed do that and they did not show up. That was my first thought but it didn't work... Any other ideas?

Create a ringtones folder under media on your sd card
mine is in /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones and they show up
Do that and then go into Music and then tap and hold on to the ringtone you want then you'll get the option of making it a ringtone, or use Zedge from the market to download and set your ringtones.

Download and use Zedge.
Ok wait what does the file extension need to be saved as for this phone?

it doesn't matter. .mp3 will be fine.
Funny. I used the same SD card that was from my blackberry. My ringer folder was under sdcard- blackberry - ringtones. And it showed up on my mt4g no problem.

Ok this is ridiculous already. I messed with it all day...downloaded zedge again and tried saving my ringtones to even that folder, nothing worked... But the thing I don't understand is why isn't it. My sister has the original mytouch and I did all the same steps on her phone and it worked flawlessly. I'm fine for the night I'm going to sleep lol

This is shouldn't be that hard; it's a simple process. Create this path on your sdcard:
/media/audio/ringtones
you can also have custom notifications by creating:
/media/audio/notifications
I doubt android requires you to do so, but just in case, create those folders in all lowercase. I'm looking at my ringtones plain as day.
to recap:
create a folder called 'media' and place it on your sdcard.
create a folder called 'audio' and place it inside the 'media' folder.
create a folder called 'ringtones' and place it inside the 'audio' folder.
put all your ringtones in there.
Rintones supported are: MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, MPEG4, WAV, OGG
**Edit** they should show up immediately in your ringtones options. If not, make sure you have unplugged or unmounted your phone from your computer (It can't see those ringtones while the sdcard is mounted). Might as well reboot for good measure. This process works for rooted and unrooted phones.

Ringtone and notification change in S4

Hello
I want to add custom notification sound for my S4, I have them in mp3 format
I put these files in media\audio\notifications and it didn't show in the list
I tried also in \Notifications and they didn't also!!
each time i try a reboot to make it rescan for the new media but still no luck!
is there is a working way for this to add my tones? I tried zedge and it works but I can't add my tones to it..
I think about convert the files to .ogg and put them in system/media but this will only work for rooted phones and I guess there is another solution for that much easier!
thanks

Hi,
Try putting a folder on the root of your sd card, and call it "Notifications".
Put your mp3's in there and try again.
thanks for reply
I already tried that and wrote this on the OP,and it doesn't work too!!
and for ringtones I add them to ringtones folder and the tones never show up until I reboot the phone!
Using zedge and Ringtone maker adds the notifications and I found them instantly
maybe there is something in these apps makes the phone rescan media or what, the thing is I have a nexus 7 and once I add mp3 file to notification folder I find it in the list instantly!!
thanks

If you push the mp3 notifs to the Notification folder, you would definitely have to reboot for it to take effect
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda premium
Ok, then its normal to reboot to see the tone, I was thinking there is something wrong with me as this is not the case on my nexus 7 tablet.
thanks
I have the solution!!
I had the exactly the same problem with my S4(i9500). I've searched across the web to get a solution but in the end I've found it on my own.
> Install ES file explore
> clear defaults for Media Storage(default android sound picker). ( you may not need to do this)
> go to sound settings then notifications (or message settings then select ringtone whatever u want to change)
> you should see a dialog like complete action using : ES file explorer, Media storage, zedge (if u have it)
> choose ES and hit Just once(so you won't have to clear defaults every time)
> navigate to sound file u want and hit it.
I hope this helps.
LoL, I have the solution.
Now let's get back to reality, how to get media store to list all the sounds i downloaded from the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895636
Anyone with at least the smallest noodle knows to chose es file explorer to be able to chose one sound at a time to Add. So how to get all the sounds to list from media storage
No one knows

Yeah it has one way. U can put the mp3 files in the folder u want, this isnt important. Follow this steps:
1. Go to Apps, Settings, My device, Sound, Ringtones
2. Look for button "Add"
3. Add the sounds u want one by one
4. When u have them in that list, click OK
5. Now u can go Default notification sound
6. Select the one u need added manually b4
7. Enjoy ur new notification sound! I hope it helped ya :highfive:
LoL., even the basic of n00bs knows to use es file explorer to add one sound at a time, although what about when you have 1500 of them from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895636
No one knows how to have these new sounds automatically show up, settings , sounds , media storage. Well maybe someone knows how and just never said a word because it's confidential and they Could possible be reprimanded big time, lol
