BEST MOVIE CONVERTER OUT THERE!! Guaranteed!

In 2 weeks I've tried it all. 8 converters to be exact. The best one out there worth anyones time is a converter call AVS Video Converter 6.3(not free but reall worth it trust me). It has it all! It's pretty quick compare to the rest, but most importantly pumps out excellent video quality with smooth framerate. There's a few that's faster but most of them has bad famerates, bad quality, or both. Yes bad framerate playing on my super computer. The best settings that work for my TP2 is the following: M4V ipod h264 at 415 bitrate, 24fps, 640X384. Plays smooth looks great can't ask for more!
Converters I Tried: Handbrake 9.3 too slow
Handbrake 9.4 got sound no video?
Iwisoft choppy framerate looks very promising waiting for a newer version
Ultra mobile 3gp not enough settings file comes out to big and to slow
Any Video Converter when it works it very good, freezes to often during conversions plus to slow.
And a few others I don't remember.

it works well for me, very simple, just pick 800x480 and go. try that and let me know if you still think AVS is way better, then i'll give it a shot

Handbrake 0.9.4 works fine. You just need to use "MPEG-4 (FFmpeg)" and not "H.264 (x264)" as the phone does't natively support X264

Personally I like mediacoder.
The phone DOES support x264. My current settings on MediaCoder (free by the way) are x264 baseline profile, level 4.1 using 1183kbps and 800x448 resolution. The audio is AAC mpeg4 at 128kbps. I haven't had a chance to find the perfect settings but at those settings it provides me with great looking video and only very occasional stutter (the stutter happens in the same place and it isn't necessarily a high action sequence so I am not sure as to the cause, but in a nearly 5 minute video it stutters once, maybe twice, so it's not that bad).
I don't like the encoder specifically made for our phones because it doesn't offer a high enough bitrate and the end result is a blurry picture if you have higher resolutions and not the neat defined lines one wants with higher res. Also I had tried Super video encoder which I generally like but the downside to it is that at least with me it seems to treat the bitrate chosen as average, resulting in various moments when the phone can't handle it while media coder you can choose between average or constant. Choosing constant means your phone can handle it always or ast least should be able to.
Handbrake didn't work for me for some strange reason. It worked, but barely used my CPU. It would use 1% at most which means it was processing at .1fps and projected the video to be done in 3 or 4 days. I might give it a go sometime. I think I tried AVS but didn't like it because it wouldn't let me set the profile or level for h.264 (there was something about partition which might have been the level setting but it wasn't as precise nor was I sure that that was what it was) and I couldn't find where to choose between baseline, main, and high profile. The best way to get good video on a specific device with limited horsepower is to have each of your settings at the best level. Which is why programs which offer you that level of control are the best ones in these cases.
Though one thing I dislike about MediaCoder always opens up a page. When I chose for it not to do it anymore it still does it. Maybe that option will work for someone else.

i often end up with audio sync issues when i use that. files usually play fine on my computer but are out of sync when played on the device.
i've probably tried around 10 different encoders. so far, for me, the best is dvd catalyst free version. i'm always looking for something free. there is a paid version for $10 with more options. looks good with divx player. doesnt look as good with coreplayer 1.3 for some reason.
i'll probably try playing around with the other encoders again. the files usually play fine on my computer but i almost always end up with the audio out of sync when played on my phone. really frustrating. my settings are probably wrong somewhere.

I use Mp4forHD, it seems slow but the end result is perfect to me.

I ended up buying DVD Catalyst 3 for $9.99 USD. It takes a while to encode but little to no settings are involved. Very easy, and it even has your device in a drop down menu to ensure that it will play properly on your device. I was able to convert the new Star Trek DVD and playback video quality is very good.

Could you post your preset XML file? I've been playing around with MediaCoder for a few days now and can't get a stutter free result above 480x270.
Also, by encoding at 800 pixels wide, aren't you distorting the original, which is presumably 720 pixels wide?

When I am in a hurry I use Winavi converter, very very fast and the result is ok.

If you want a nice converter with a ****load of options that handles anything you throw at it, try "Super" (yeah, the name sucks and their site is a horrible nightmare to navigate, but it's a great and free piece of software)

Interesting no one mentioned Xilisoft video converter ultimate. It allows you to create custom profiles to get the video you want.

Badaboom
Recently I have been using Badaboom. It uses the Nvidia Cuda software on your graphics card. when converting Year One "1 hour and 40 min", took 31 minutes to convert.
Pros:
1) VERY fast
2) no glitching in the movie
3) tells you how big the file will be before you convert it
4) tells you the file size as your adjusting the settings
5) accepts dvds, video_ts folders, and video files
6) smooth black interface with control, but without clutter
Cons:
1) not freeware
2) not effective unless you use a Nvidia card with Cuda
3) only outputs to .mp4 files "coreplayer struggles with, but wmp plays flawlessly"
4) feels like there should be more...but there isn't

+1 on that! CorePlayer plays these with amazing clarity. Also the most easily found and downloadable (ehmm) so never any converting required! But seriously even easier to actually torrent the movie even if you own it. These guys are pros at finding the best settings to produce the best quality at around 650 to 800 mb for your average movie. I have like ten of them on my 16gb card.
On the HTC TP2 the latest CorePlayer must be used for no lag and very little cpu usage. Great mp3 player too.

Everone's Gone to the Movies

I get inspired every once in a while to convert some full length movies, and put them on whatever phone I have at the time. I have had mixed success (mixed failures?) and would like to see what people are doing that actually works!
I grabbed a couple of Blockbuster on Demand Movies (The two free ones that are offerred to HD2 Owners, plus a couple I paid for. They were formatted horribly, sounds was just acceptable, and like others, I was hoping for the kind of product that the Transformer conversions were. No such luck. Blockbuster, being A MOVIE RETAILER, does not deem information such as "Screen Format" or "Sound Encoding" to be important enough to share with us. The 4 films I have viewed were "Widescreen Format" but, since 800x640 is not 16:9, you end up with two very noticable black bands top & bottom of the screen. Try showing off your HD2, only to have some wiseass 8 year old comment "How come it doesn't fill the screen?" t seems like the wiseass 8 year old has a better sense of what's right than the wizards at Blockbuster (Using "Roxio Cinema Now" technology)
Okay, so much for delivering content to the "Hardest working Screen in the Business" Who then has a tried and true method for converting Ripped DVDs into our beautiful media device? I don't have the patience to try this and that ripper, this and that converter, get the demos, look at 5 minutes of video, or have a huge watermark all while NOT getting a nice conversion to begin with. What I dream of is a 2-3 step process, not a 8-10 step process, that I have to lord over the whole time. I would GLADLY pay for a properly done ripper/converter so I could simply watch a movie on this device that was made to do just that.

I also would like to know.

Have you thought of using TCPMP? (project is somewhere in this site) I just copy over movies (Xvid AVIs) and they play just fine.

this is the program that i use to put movies in my gadgets... I've put 10s movies in my htc hd2. try it, it has a very simple GUI, and the results is very nice too..
and just a little more detail, you can set up the resolutions output too so it will match the HD2 screen.
for the hd2, i converted my dvd to generic mp4.

Same here, using DVD Fab... It is FABulous to use.

i just use handbreak. it works really well. im currently using a profile i made that is bassicaly the iphone/ipodtouch preset with the resolution set to 800x48 for hi def and whatever the size is on lower def videos. i also have custom anamorphic which is set at
xxx = width if source file or 800 whichever is greater

on a test of the start trek blu ray i was able to full my screen with the people looking normal and not cutting anything off anything.
i have it on average bit rate of 640 with 2 pas and turbo 1st pass. with audio at 128. the movies look really good to me. Just for comparison the transformers movies weren't all that great looking on my pc at all. they look grainy and for that they are not really utilizing all the bandwidth they are consuming.
with these setting i am very happy of the video quality on my HD2 and the audio is also very good. I also didnt like the blockbuster offering. at these settings it is about 350mb per hour and thats including audio.
To make it with my same exact setting all you need to do is select the iPhone/iPod touch presert, make the resolution say 800x480 or whatever the max is allowed, just dont pass 800 x 480. the anamorphic is set to custom with
800

Well as noted above, I had been using Handbrake, but my ripping mates have come up with a program that already had the HTC HD2 in mind.
A freeware coverter with an actual preset specific for the HTC HD2 and it works just fine my friends.

I just set up handbrake with some iPad presets, and i think they would be perfect for the galaxy s as well. The iframe option is less than full 720p, but it should be mpre than good enough for displaying on the galaxy screen.

Unless encoding 1080p content, i don't see any point in encoding stuff for the galaxy s.
it reads just about anything.

I've been using the same settings in Handbrake. Even with bit rates around 1800-2000bps it plays really well (colour me impressed). Have set audio to 128kbps AAC, as there isn't much point going above that with just headphones on.
I have to say having come across from the Milestone the screen on this thing is sumptuous. I'll never be able to go back to LCD.

Yeah, but obsessive-compulsive freaks like me (and I'm sure a few others here) just have to go for the optimal experience. Considering this thing is such a monster I think it does it justice to see what it's capable of.

Good point, but you do want to transcode blu rays. Im not sure how though.

Nah. I meant anything above 128kbps, sorry. On my Milestone I used to use 96kbps but since the SGS is such a beast I figured 'what the hell?'

I have spent time on this, trying many ways as I want a great picture, so on any 1080p and 720p films I go for XMedia Recode/custom/mp4 h264/high/4.1/2 pass at 2000 bit/deblocking low/1280 by 720/mp3 192...I need this as I use sure headphones and they need good input/it works out at around 1gig or just under per hour you do, yes its lots of space but again there is new memory cards on the way (talk of tosh having made a 120gig nand chip) picture is great and its future proof for other mobiles in future as I dont want to have to do them again anytime soon, also on this setting it removes all black bars when the phone plays it (they remain if you watch on tv) but I also guess there is better ways but I just want good picture, and I did read there is problem with how our phone reads blacks, it uses the graphic chip which at the moment has problems understanding shades of black in lower than hd movies, this in turn leads to blocking but only in dark films, one guy found a way to pass this and says picture is great and blocking is almost gone in good rips but he did not state how to do this, so guess rest of us need someone or samsung to fix this, maybe on their first firmware download?

I don't see a point to re-encode movies if SGS reads every single one...

Because there are optimal settings for best quality/clarity.

we suffer from a cap of 4gb, no files bigger than that because of fat32 not letting us move bigger movie files, 720p movies sit around 6 7 8 gigs and 1080p around 10 12 13...some even more.

I just download 720p rips of tv episodes, anime and sports and drop the mkv directly into there.
If it is a movie and its below 4gb 720p i drop the mkv directly in there
If its a movie bigger i just use the hd encoder found here on xda and just do standard 800*480 with hd input.
Of if the movie has a 480 version ... ill grab that instead.
But most of the times i just drop the mkv into there ... mainly movies with subtitles i use the hd encoder.

Is it possible to put ext2 on the microsd card to get around the 4GB limit?
It is a Linux phone, after all. It should be able to handle it.

im not sure im new at adding videos to android devices but if you download the software theres a manual in pdf form that explains everything it can do.

I have about 60 DVD's ripped so far using this same program. One thing to note though, The movies are a bit grainy when you do the preset Xoom setting. You might want to go into video settings and up the bitrate to 1750 or so if you really want your movie to look amazing on the Xoom.

Also you'll probably want to get AnyDVD. It breaks encryption and copy protection so that you can *ahem* backup your disks. It even fixes the disks that try to use false headers and what not to make the movie play out of order when you rip it. I've been using the 21 day trial version myself.

My first try at converting a 720p mkv high profile video is ok. It is not full screen like the youtube video indicates using the Xoom setting. The sound however is much louder compared to using the free handbrake application.
The application itself needs some work on the GUI. It is not very intuitive. Also, when it is running, it causes my computer to not be as responsive. Handbrake does not do that.
This is only my first test so results may vary with other files I try.

if you want better quality next to the xoom preset click modify and you can change the resolution and bitrate from a 1000 to 1750 like the previous post said. if a dvd has 2 versions there will be 2 different movies at the top one is for widescreen and 1 for fullscreen

What are you file sizes. Like example a 90 minute movie, 120 minute movie, 150 minute movie, and a 180 minute movie.

night at the roxbury was 600mb and thats 82 mins
but then inception which is 2 1/2 hours long is 1.1 gb
so maybe 500 mb for every 1 hour?

Grr.. I did a DvD with the default Xoom preset and the file is 1.2 gb and the audio is off(ie: not in sync).... did I just sink 9.95 for a blah ripper?

did you click manage next to the xoom preset and and change the bitrate or audio quality? ive burned 10 movies and all have had no problems whatsover

I did not do any dvd ripping but converted 720p mkv files into xoom format using catalyst. Quality was good and the file size dropped from 4.5gb to 1.2. No sync or stuttering issues. Really impressed.
Down side is it took the length of the movie to convert and like one poster said it lags my whole PC down.

Most common (non-DRM) video files, including MKV and ISOs. Just drag&drop them onto the program. If you drag folders, it will filter out the video files. Some MKVs might give some problems due to either having compressed-headers headers enabled (a recent change in MakeMKV, enable "fixmkv" setting in Global Settings > Advanced), or due to an unsupported (at the moment) audio format (truHD/e-ac3). Depending on the source of your MKV's most work though.

If you test-play your files on your PC, don't use Windows Media Player. WMP has sync-issues with MP4 files. if you use Quicktime or VLC, they will play fine.
As for the PC-slowdown, the conversion to h264 video is quite processor-intensive, and the software uses whatever power it can find. The faster the processor, the faster the conversions. If you use a single-core/cpu system, conversions tend to run at about the same speed as the length of the movie (select the xoom-fast profile to speed it up), but if you have a nice Core i7 Quad or 6-core, you can rip a 2 hour movie in about 20 minutes.

Why not provide an option to lower the priority? It sounds like the application is only usable now if you queue something up to run overnight.

It's there
Global Settings (enable "power user" mode) > Conversion > conversion priority.
By default it runs at "Normal" priority.

I tried it. It's simple but the files that it creates are unnecessarily large. I prefer to use eMote's handbrake script.

I used the demo version on some BD and DVD discs. Using a i7 2630 a DVD took 11 minutes to encode. The BD disc took 18 minutes. Blazing Fast.
I think the video quality is quite good. Badaboom utilizes the Intel Quick Sync technology which is great.
The only problem I have is that some BD titles do not decode properly. I get some colored lines in the picture. Cannot figure out what is wrong..
This is the only thing that is keeping me from purchasing..

It will not convert directly from the BD disc, however it will convert a MKV file of the BD disc (Full quality)....
Works great on some discs and not on others.. Not sure why...

Can you give an example of some disks you don't have working?
I use badaboom because it uses GPU decoding. I've found for BD that it works best to rip to M2TS and then run through badaboom. Takes longer as you are running full quality through, but haven't run into any lines or the like.
