Hard reset noob questiob - Galaxy S I9000 General

What will happen if i do a hard reset after i updated? And how do i do that? I want to get rid of some lagging after i updated to FROYO JPO TODAY that i didnt have before. Some tasks are snappier. E.g. Messaging. . And handcent sms etc. But applications list feels a bit laggier

If I'm not completely mistaken I would say that a hard reset simply means forceful restart i.e removing the battery to reboot the phone.

all Internet browsers close after 2.2 UPDATE

i updated and of course, all internet browsers close as soon as a start using them. They open, let me go to a website or two, then close. I was super eager to test the full flash but i can barely get to the websites themselves without the browser closing suddenly. I updated the firmware, profile, prl, and everything. the phone was never rooted.
I'm about to do a hard reset but I figured i should check what you guys had to say first.

Hard reset is the only thing that has helped so far. Just do it, it will make the system work better anyway.
Will a hard reset effect firmware/froyo.
I had the same issues with the camera. Reset all folders permission to read and write.
sorry for my ignorance but how I can do a hard reset? and it will fix the problem?
No, a hard reset basically wipes your data and cache(?) partitions. All apps and data are deleted. This will return you to just your normal firmware, without any customizations. Then you can reinstall apps. I think that's the main problem, some apps aren't dealing with the upgrade too well, and as a result, you get some weird errors. It won't change any versions of your software though.
I'm having the same problem.. If we move the apps to the SD card we shouldn't have to reinstall them, correct? And if we re-install apps, does the settings/info saved on them return or would we have to change those as well? I'm getting ready to do a hard reset too and I spent alot of time with these apps and I was worried about losing info/settings..
Also, I'm using Launcher Pro, will it revert back to Sense after the Hard Reset?

Search "how to hard reset the HTC EVO". It can either be done through the settings menu or you can physically do it using the power and volume rocker.
My dad was having similar issues. And said that going into settings while in the browser and changing enable plugins from "always on" to "on demand" helps
Also the person using launcher pro go into the launcher pro settings or preferabces and all the way on the bottom you can backup your settings/homescreen.

It will return back to sense. It will be like a brand new phone. Before you hard reset backup your launcher pro settings and homescreen. Hard reset if my internet fix didn't work. Reinstall all apps and launcherpro and then restore launcher pro settings and homescreens.
Is hard reset the only way to fix this?
No you can remove Adobe flash and reinstall it.. worked flawless for myself.
James
I hate to ask this sounding like a noob, but I'm at work and can't do much research, but what would be the best way to backup all those files? Just with the USB drive or is there a backup app I can download, etc.
Nevermind, I figured out how to backup Launcher Pro, but how about apps still?

It should still be in the market, got it earlier for latest CM Nightly.
Yeah I don't see it either. I found Flash 10.1 beta on Appbrain, but it won't sync with my phone. I uninstalled and removed flash and my browser is still crashing.
Here is the APK. I had to uninstall it using titanium backup. was easier than going the ADB rm way
James
I had the same problem. Some are saying it's because of installing the half ass full flash version on 2.1 that came out a month ago.
I downloaded and reinstalled the apk and then it worked...for about 6 hours and then the browser starting crashing again.
The next time i uninstalled and then installed the flash 10.1 again, so far, so good.
When I get home I'm gonna try that and hope it works before I do a hard reset.
Nothing worked so I finally decided on the hard reset. I think one should do it anyway to get the best out of the update. Everything works fine now, glad to see that it remembers the apps I had already paid for. The whole thing seems to run smoother than ever, (I hated the baggy scrolling.) Southparkstudios works now, the entire video section of the new York times works now as well. Embedded YouTube videos work on Facebook they play without me having to leave the page/browser.
****ONE ISSUE***
Text fields act strange. I can't type status updates into the full Facebook site anymore, nothing happens when I tap the text field. That blows big time I hate using the Facebook apps I want the full site to work fully.
Similarly, I was never able to type into the text fields on the gmail full site. Now I can a little bit although Tue browser seems uber confused about whether it wants to deal with the text field or not. Any ideas why text fields (
Rich text fields) are such an issue?
I was hoping that yahoo games would work, especially yahoo pool but still no go.

Lag not fixed?

Not sure if this is the lag that "lagfix" should be "fixing". But i lately realized when i have text messages from a large amount of people, the scroll going up and down lags tremendously and its annoying. I've tried deleting a lot of texts but still does the same. It doesn't flow like how contacts fly through the screen as water in a steady stream. I also get this lag under fav's. Has this been posted before?
May need to undo lagfix and do factory data reset. The lagfix really only help in io intensive situations. I.e. muti tasking, leaving all apps running consistently. I've never once had lag when scrolling messages and I've read people who have lag doing a factory reset helps. Try it. U should have some luck. Just a suggestion to try and if it doesn't work we will go from thee
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The so-called lag fix only enhances data read/write speed for certain system directories. It has nothing to do with visual lag, but without knowing what's causing the lag you're seeing, it's hard to say for sure whether that lag fix should or shouldn't be helping that.

SGS Rants & Complains all you want here

[Q] Phone app, Contacts app rant
I love my SGS, hence i want to rant about it
Dialing from contacts, phone takes always one extra step than other phones.
if i already took the time to set defaults manually,
(1) why do i have to select the number to call again (contacts, solution could be viewing button on far right from the contact name) or
(2) when i use smart dial and am satisfied with first suggestion why do i have to select it then press call (phone app, if i want to call other suggestions they already show it separately in a drop down)?
after a month of using my sgs i still hold the phone to my ear and wait for a while, until i realize i hadn't pressed the green button.
(3) in contacts app i can search my friends by nickname, but ONLY IF i edited their nickname through contacts app, i.e. if it's imported from gmail and i never edited it on my phone it fails to find by nickname.
(4) smart dial is not so smart as it can't search by nickname, unless it's the only field for the contact in the phone's phonebook, huh? so i have to manually add new contacts to phone, then link them, for my closest people (phone app) if it's okay for a handful of people but starting from 20 i start cursing samsung app devs
(5) for my business contacts... it avoids searching by last name, what? (phone app)
then the editing, grouping etc... but since i don't add people daily i can make it work through other apps.
so are there solutions, that you know of, to these woes ?
1. I think the default number only applies outside the contact app (like a shortcut). But if you open it from contact it has to show you all the contact info (otherwise how else can dial the other numbers of that contact that is not the default??).
2. I think this is to cater for the 3G video call option.
3/4/5. It is kind of lame the phone app search only matches from beginning of name and not the entire string. (Hopefully new firmware can cater to this). Luckily the global search (i.e. long press menu key) matches everything. You may want to use this to find instead of opening the phone/contact app. It is much faster
In the contacts settings you can set the order to last name before first name, then you can search by last name.
If you want to call default number just flick the contact name right. Flick it left for message.

Hey thanks for the tip
was it in the manual? (which i never read for any device....)
Well thats just great.
I am seriously so fed up with Samsung its not even funny. I am never buying one of there products ever again.
I said that I would never buy another Samsung product after my last Samsung phone, the Instinct. That was by far the worst phone I have ever owned. I with I had have stuck to that promise.
Oh well. I guess I learned the wrong way.
I think I might just try to sell this pos for as much as I can get for it and buy an HTC Desire HD.
Piece of crap! Grrrrrrrrr
I have put up with this phones issues for months, thinking wait for froyo and see if it helps things. To my delight froyo just became available for o2 uk customers, so I quickly updated. I was like a child with a new toy...but now feel like its broke/lost!
Firstly firstly beaufiful widgets doesn't seen to work properly on froyo. But my main gripe is the new found super lag. I cant even type this message without the phone stuttering! Scrolling up and down in anything...it stutters...like wtf?
Whats my best bet? Hard reset? If so how do I do it? If I backup my contacts on kies will it restore to a factory rest phone?
Any advice is welcome!

I feel your pain.
Even going to JPO theres still lag, and the number of hacks that have to be done to get away from RFS and make the phone actually perform like it should is crazy.
I ended up defecting to an iPhone 4, but still have the SGS waiting for the day when its lag free and performing the way it should.
IMO the SGS "could" be way better than the iPhone, but it just needs Samsuck to pull the finger out.

I did the same and defected to iPhone 4. I will be selling my Galaxy S as I don't believe Samsung will resolve the issues. They have had plenty of time to do this already and nothing has happened. Even with the XDA Developers showing them the problems and coming up with solutions they still have a laggy phone whcih lacks in so many way's. Don't even get me started on Kies.
In the end I bought an iPhone 4 and iPad wifi. Using iTunes and everything is working correctly.
Do yourself a favour...........
No no, its a great phone
Just need to apply mods/hacks/roots etc to make it work apparently and when update comes out you undo it all then redo it all again and hope for best.
I think it would be a great phone if it didn't lag so much.

JP3 is sh*t. use another firmware
use doc's or darky's and wait for cm6.1 that'll surely be free from lags.
I will have to disagree. I got my galaxy s 3 months replacing iphone 3gs. It came with eclair 2.1 and it was perfect. I did the froyo update the day it came out with the reg hack and kept on getting freezes and force close. Did a factory reset and everything was fine. Did the new official update JPA with no reset and again perfect. The only program that lagged a little was email. Did the one click lag fix and now everything is smooth and fast. With over 50 apps i have no problems at all. My only gripe is that it should have more available ram and with flash on the browser stutters on flash heavy sites.
Apart from that i am very happy. By the way a get sattelite lock on my gps from a cold start in 30 seconds!

What most users are forgetting is when you upgrade the ROM from Eclair to Froyo you MUST perform a Factory Reset.
Doing so will eliminate a lot of the problems with current Apps.

[Q] Wildfire Lag After Fryo Update

Hi Firends,
I updated the HTC Wildfire to 2.2 OTA update but ever since it has been updated the is a lot of lag in the phone. It is irritating. Menus work slower, messaging takes ages etc etc etc.
Does any1 know the reason and the fix to the problem? and also does any1 else have a similar problem or have i just made some error in updating????
Thanks

Hi,
I am facing same problem with my HTC Wildfire after the upgrade. Just one question.. when i do the factory reset all the contacts and messages will be erased. I don't want to loose all the messages and contacts. I have done the contacts backup in the card but i have no idea about the messages. Is there any way through which i can do the same?? Also I've not tried restoring the backup of contacts from card. Does that work??
Thanks in Advance.

If for Contacts, you are referring to the Import / Export Option under the Contacts App, then yes, Restoring works. I have done that numerous times, after flashing new ROM's, and it has worked (Import Contacts from SD Card) perfectly everytime.
For backing up SMS'es, there's an SMS Backup that's posted somewhere in this forum (HTC Wildfire General Discussions or HTC Wildfire Themes and Apps), Just look around a bit. Don't know whether it works or not since I have never had a need to use it.
Hi,
I haven received any froyo update so i just wonder why froyo 2.2 will bring wildfire to slower?
Froyo 2.2 suppose is faster version than 2.1 right?
Anyone have experience of faster speed for your phone after froyo 2.2 update?
No.
Same here. 2.1 was a lot faster then 2.2. At least for my phone. With 2.2 it lags in menu scrolling, in loading widgets, it freezes during calls.
And yes, I did a factory reset. (but I didn't format my sdcard).
By the way. Did anyone got the screen black after a call? Can it be the sensor? Because the screen should come back on after you take it away from the ear. After many calls mine didn't.

2.2 should be faster, but, with the OTA, JIT, the main reason as to why Froyo is faster, is switched off. So, essentially, theres no difference between 2.1 and 2.2 (official ones), except for the addition to Froyo Apps2SD and WiFi tethering.

For your slowness, try formatting your SD Card as well. Start everything from scratch. It should help somewhat. As for the Proximity sensor, I have no idea.
Well I'ved made some time and started from scratch. Indeed it does make a difference. I runs much smother now.

Reset Factory Settings and Format SD Card, both, together, and, start afresh. Just read the post above yours.
I tried factory reset but it didn't work. Will try Formatting SD card as well today.
Since i updated to a custom FROYO ROM i have been experiencing lag issues as well. This was even after a total clean install.
TBH i think Android is crap now and is still Beta software at best.
For example, when i'm texting the spell check and auto-capitalisation usually fails when u try to type even remotely fast, end up with words that have 3 capital letters because the software can't switch to lower case in time and sometimes the spell check ignores the first letter of words etc.
We'll just have to put up with the lag or go back to 2.1.
Smartphones should really be renamed Dumbphones as they make crap phones and also crapp computers, bit stuck in the middle of nowhere really.
Sounds like i've been ranting! lol

Perform both simultaneously. Start again from scratch as it is when you unbox a phone for the first time, after any major updates like an OS update.
I noticed lag after update to 2.2 and found that all the icons on all panels had been loaded twice.
If i dragged an icon to remove it there was the same icon underneath.
I cleared the panels and started again, now my device is fast again.

GB debloating: removing "blur_yahoo.apk" breaks contacts.

I just spent some time trying to figure out what had broken my contacts functionality and this was it. Again, removing "blur_yahoo.apk" and the associated .odex file will break the contacts app. After removal, clicking on a contact in the dialer/contact app will just shut the app down. I've no idea why, since the yahoo app is for yahoo mail.

I noticed that freezing some of the messaging/social services also seems to force close the built-in message app too. If you use something like ChompSMS then it isn't a big deal b/c that still works.

You should probably do some more research before you start messing with that b/c it can brick the OS requiring a full install of the ROM. In this case, if you don't do a restore before removing stuff you'll be restoring the SBF file a lot.
But to answer your question though...the app you want is Titanium Backup Pro (aka the pay version b/c of the "Freeze" option.)

Well since the GB build for the DX just came out, I haven't been able to find a definitive thread anywhere (including on MyDroidWorld) listing what is save to remove or at least freeze. As of right now I think it's safe to say that its going to be a trial and error situation.
There are threads somewhere (droidforums?) about which of the 2.1 and 2.2 apps are safe to remove. While there are some new apps, those that were safe before are still safe. Of the new apps, the blur_yahoo is the only one that's given me trouble. Be warned, though, that while you can remove Backup Assistant and Blur Home, if you do a factory reset from within Android (rather than from clockworkmod), your initial install will break and you'll need to sbf if you can't get back into clockwork.
Also, bluremailengine is needed for blurcalendar to work properly. I remove bluremail, all the third party crap, all the social crap, swipe, and various other things I don't use like universal inbox, widgets, etc. Really, you just need to play with it.

Yea I know about those threads (I have one open right now actually) but since this is a whole new version of Blur & version of Android w/ a lot of changes & new options...who knows what Motorola changed or buried deeper into the system.
Thanks for being the guinea pig though I've never had a reason to use factory reset after a ROM is installed so removing BA & Blur Home isn't a big deal.
One question...have you removed the Messaging & Text Messaging apps at all? I still can't figure out what it was that caused the Text Messaging app to quit on me as soon as it was opened. Not that it's a big deal...b/c ChompSMS worked fine for me
Does anyone else notice a SEVERE amount of lag immediately after you reboot the phone? Lasts about 3-4 minutes every time I reboot then goes away. Affects everything from changing home screens, to opening apps, even turning the ringer volume up and down lags...

I removed all the messaging crap except the default messaging app (conversations.apk). I use Google Voice so I don't use the default app, but I sent myself a message using it and it worked just fine.
Note: you can do a data wipe/factory reset from within clockwork and you'll be fine.
If someone can produce a list of everything in /system/app (well, just the .apks would do), I can mark the ones I've successfully removed without problems.
Ditto to that...I'd be happy to contribute what I've frozen.

Mine takes about 10-15 seconds from the appearance of the homescreen until it's at full speed. Of course, I've overclocked to 1.2 GHz, debloated, zipaligned, implemented drod's rubix tweaks, and used autostarts to kill unnecessary apps from loading at boot.

You're right. I just timed it. About 38 seconds from red M to full appearance of desktop (I've got the boot animation disabled) and about 25 seconds from full desktop to all widgets loaded and ready to go. I underestimated by 40-60%! I'm using the blur launcher, btw.
Something must be wrong with mine then...because mine lasts a good 3 to 4 minutes...and that seems very long for services to be starting...
