God Mode? (solved)

How can I activate God Mode on a rooted XOOM? I want to nullify some stock apps, but Root Explorer is saying they are read only.

What do you mean by god mode. You already have root. That's all you should need.

That might not be the correct term, and it may require a custom rom. Not sure, but on Project Elite for the OG Droid, there's an option under General>System called God Mode that gives you full access to files on the system. That may just be what Actngrezy calls it in PE.
I just want to rename some of the apps that were included on the XOOM. Specifically, I want to nullify the Quick Office apk so I can install the NI Adam version. When I navigate to the apk in Root Explorer, I get an error telling me it's a read only file. I never got that error with the Droid. I can change whatever I want to on that device.

Did you click on mount r/w in root explorer

Did you install superuser? if so make sure you have allowed root explorer in it. Then on the top left hand side in root explorer hit mount r/w

Im just visiting the forum to steal a few files to compare with atrix , how ever if i read your cleverly phrased question correctly and you are trying to remove/freeze some apps that came on the Xoom and you are getting read only error its because to modify anything in the /system dir you need to
1. back up anything you might remove via adb pull or via adb shell cp
2. adb shell
3.su
4. mount -o rw,remount (what ever the path to zoom block is i dont know cause i dont have one ) exp /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system
from there you can remove what ever you want out of system dir
5. exp. rm /system/app/quickoffice.apk

you can also get a system uninstaller in the market that will do it for you just the same, I usually use that in case there is more included than just the apk file

I thought about the uninstaller thing, but I'd rather not uninstall anything that came on the XOOM just in case. I just add an extra .null at the end of the apk (and associated files, which are easy to find) in case I need to restore them.
For instance, the NI Quick Office app force closes when you just breathe on the freaking tablet, so I had to restore the default one.

Hey guys, I'm new to the rooting and xda community. I just rooted my mt4g a few days ago and am trying to figure out how to remove the tmobile "my account" application. I have seen a thread on xda where someone claimed to have removed it. I'm currently on ice glacier (latest version) i have titanium and super manager and busy box and all that jazz but im still not able to get it removed. Even after trying to force remove with titanium. if anyone could point me to the proper thread that has detailed instructions on how to remove that dastardly app or a video walkthrough that would be great. thanks for your help guys.

easiest way in your case would be to open Super Manager > give it SU access via the settings menu > file explorer > then go do /system/app and look for it and delete it.

Go to Settings -> Apps -> Manage Apps, scroll to the app, select, and hit uninstall. If the uninstall button is greyed out, download a root file manager (such as Root Explorer, for example), and manually delete the APK from /data.

ive tried over and over through titanium and super manager, it just will not remove. i have also tried to find and remove the selfhelp.apk which seems to be what its listed under but all with no luck. still keeps popping up using my data and being annoying. thanks for your input guys.

The only other thing I can think of is file permissions. You need a file manager that allows you to change the permissions to the appropriate type to allow you to remove a file. You can do that in Root Manager (change it form R/O to R/W).

are you making sure to change the settings to SU access, and changing the ~/system folders to R/W.

to do this you want to go into the adb to terminal and type
Code:
$ su
# mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/mtdblk3/block /system
be care full this will make the entire phone r/w, deleting the wrong thing will FUBAR the phone.
then you'll want to type

ls /system/app
and see if it's in there, if not
Code:
ls /data/app
when you find it you'll want to type, depending on data or system you'll need to change it accordingly.
Code:
rm /______/app/<app name>
when you are done deleting what you want change everything back to -ro

mount -o remount,ro /dev/mtdblock3 /system

Haha yes, you can easily FUBAR the phone. FYI, Root Explorer can change file permissions with the click of a button, without having to do it manually through terminal.
I feel like I'm promoting RE a little too much, but it's what I've used for a long time with great success, so naturally it's what I suggest. neidlinger's method will accomplish the same thing, with the advantage of learning what's going on "behind the scenes."

As I'm new to rooting, is there any roms that come without myaccount already?

most of them do not include this in the ROM.

Cannot for the life of me get system r/w permissions

I've been running cm7 nightlies and now stable 7.0 for some time now. I have the new radio, ladios' kernel, and the sdcard read fix flashed.
I installed super manager and successfully deleted some of the stock cm7 media off my phone last week. Today, I came across the new GPS.conf files and wanted to try them.
Super manager couldn't switch the system to r/w despite saying "ok"
When I try to delete or write in the system with EStrongs file explorer, ghost commander, or android mate, they all give strange errors. The deleted files disappear but reappear after reboot. If I try to paste a file in system/etc I only get an error.
Superuser is successfully allowing permissions. I have the latest busybox. I have r/w enabled in each file manager.
I even tried an adb push test which first said "system is r/o only". The next try was "successful" but didn't do anything.
I'm still new with adb so I probably did something wrong. I typed in that r/w command, mount now shows: /dev/block/mtdblock3 on /system type yaffs2 (rw,relatime)
I can't figure out what changed and what I need to do to get r/w permissions. My only theory is that i had uninstalled and reinstalled super manager earlier and that somehow messed with my permissions.

You cannot permanently modify the system partition while the phone is booted into Android. The only way is to use adb while the phone is in recovery mode. Any changes you make while the phone is booted will be lost after a reboot.
Go check on those media files you thought you deleted. I bet you'll find they are still there.

Can I add and remove files from the cm7 zip before flashing it? Do I have to rezip it in any special or can windows 7 manage it fine?

Those programs will work on some phones but not the Aria.
Next question:

It really is as simple as adding or removing a few files from the zip file if you want to modify it.

And then another question comes to mind; can you go back and make one of those system apps just a regular old app?

System apps are essentially going to be 'firmware' because unless you're rooted (which is not by design) they cannot be modified. If you make an app a system app, it theoretically can run better, though that is debatable, it will survive factory wipes and cannot be accidentally deleted. What you lose though is the ability to upgrade it in the market.
In all, it's not really necessary 90% of the time. The easiest way to make an app a system app, if you're interested, is to use Titanium Backup Pro. Not only will it copy the .apk over, but it will reassign the permissions of its /data folder as well.

Cross device link occurs when you're attempting to move a file across storage devices due to the way mv works (it only rereferences the inode, not moving the actual data). Instead, use cp to copy it to the sd.

Exactly.
More specifically though, the mv binary included with android. The GNU mv tool included in any modern linux can tell if the data needs to be moved to different mounted devices and will do it if need be.

They are in /data/media but you can only view that folder with superuser priviledge. If ES File Explorer has an option of getting superuser permission in settings then you can view them or you can use Root Explorer App.
If you have adb then you can view them in adb shell and then become superuser and then view that location.

as i said. the fix for this is one or two posts below this one. why is it so hard for people to understand engrish?

go to android /mnt/shell/emulate and you will see your nandroid their I had same problem until I found it:thumbup:

heard. the point is its on the same page. it isnt pages deep where you would need a search. the op can get away with not caring about a search. but to read this thread and see that the fix is only a couple of clicks away... why would you take the time to post that you are having the same issue.

I see the nandroid backup in /data/media/clockkworkmod/backup and in /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup. I am using root browser lite.
When I try to delete the nandroid it doesn't work with this app. How can I delete?

Use Solid Explorer, browse files and delete. I do this since forever with CWM and now TWRP

ok, so - say i want to copy these nandroids to my computer before i delete them from my nexus 4 / and vice-versa. how would i find it using windows explorer or finder?
i understand that the nandroids for CWM are stored in:
/data/media/clockworkmod
and when you plug your phone into the computer, it shows an emulated sdcard, but whats a quick and easy way of getting to the root of the device for copying from the computer?
apologies if this has been covered before, but i just stumbled upon this thread when looking for it, and this had the latest activity.

Normally I don't recommend tool kits as people should learn, but I would give one a shot as there is a feature to just pull backup and save to PC.

Just to clarify:
Nandroid is stored in the phone's internal storage not the internal sdcard.
When you connect to the computer, windows explorer shows the internal sdcard only.
A file browser app that allows manipulation of the internal storage will show the nandroid. You could copy it to your sdcard and move it to your computer with windows explorer, airdroid, etc. Or you can us the tool kit.

In CWM itself you have the possibility to delete them, too. I think this is worth mentioning. To my mind this is the easiest way.
Copying them to your PC is also possible via ADB (if present and activated)

Awesome thanks, so i'm assuming that will copy the data to whatever directory i am currently in in the Terminal. we'll just assume we are in C:\?
Then also i would assume the command to put that nandroid from my PC to the phone would be
