I have checked off delete odd messages and set the delete count high, yet every time around 2000 total texts they all delete. I have tried checking and unchecking delete old texts to see if it makes a difference but it does not seem to work in any build. Anyone else having this problem and if you did how can you fix it.

Hi All
I have an O2 XDA Exec running version 1.30.107 WWE of the ROM dated 04-Nov-2006.
I've let rather a lot of SMS text messages accumulate in my inbox (approx 1,200) and sent items (approx 1,600).
Recently I've tried to delete many of them and move some others into some new sub folders. All is fine until I next reboot the phone and at that point all of the texts are re-instated back to their state on 01-Mar-2009!
So deleted texts are undeleted. New texts sent or received since that date disappear and texts moved to subfolders are moved back to their original folders! The new subfolders themselves disappear. So it's a sort of ground hog day
Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone have any ideas for me?
I've experimented with making just small numbers of deletes before rebooting in case it couldn't cope with the large quantity of changes I originally made. Unfortunately that made no difference. I've experimented with syncing my phone both before and after the deletes in case that would make a difference again it didn't. I've also tried deleting items from the "Deleted Items" folder but even then, once rebooted the messages come back.
I really hope someone can give me an insight into what's going on and how I can fix it.
Thanks
David
I now understand how to solve this.
For some reason, if you reset the Exec just afer you have deleted or moved text messages then these changes are entirely forgotten during the reboot. You need to give the Exec 5 or 10 minutes to think about the changes before you reboot!
I know it's hard to believe but it seems to be true.
Hii all,
Is there anyway to delete all your SMS messages from ALL contacts at once, without having your phone crashed??? Cause I started erasing messages from one contact (dont know how to delete from all at once) when my battery was like 18 % and then my phone was loading and loading and loading and I couldn't do anything.... SO I waited for 20 minuts or so, and removed the battery cause it made me nuts! After that the battery was only 4 procents and my messages weren't deleted at all?
I searched on the forum with the keys "empty inbox" but I didn't find any relevant topics about this issue.
Thanks in advance

This is a bit convoluted, but once it's set up it's a doddle.
Get Microsoft MyPhone and get it installed and synced with your device. Then, go to the online interface and select all your text messages (when you select all the ones on the page, it offers to select all of them from the whole phone). Then, you can either archive or delete them online. Next time you do a sync on your phone, they'll all be gone.
I use archiving to keep my message numbers down, and it's great because it means I still have all the text messages, just not on my phone.
Hope this helps mate
On messages tab go to All messages, then tab and hold on one of the conversations. Then you have menu where you can delete all these messages at once. DO the same with all contact's conversations.
This is almoast "all at once", except it is "delete all from the one person".
Thanks guys!
Hey guys, stumbled across this forum while searching for help with another issue and it's been a great help so far.
Anyway, have a new problem with the phone. I have (or atleast had) a fair amount of messages from various people. On my birthday of all days (I guess I was getting larger than average amount of messages?), the phone decided to display some error message which I didn't see and then deleted all of my messages, so people have messaged me for my bday and I have no idea what they have said, haha, but thats a seperate problem.
Went into the settings and the phone has checked 'delete old messages' again even though I made sure this was off when I first got the phone.
I changed it back and checked again... the phone has checked the box again. No matter what I do it keeps checking the box.
Any ideas?
I have that bug too. I do not know how to solve it. In order not to del my old messages, I just increase the text message limit (from 200 to 1000).
I have the exact same problem. Very annoying. I've lost a fair amount messages due to this too. Now I've increased the text message limit from 200 to 500 and I backup all my SMSes to my gmail account using "SMS Backup" every night. Seems to be the only way to preserve old messages at the moment.

I've done that now too (up to 5000 as thats the limit), so hopefully it should be ok now, but I'd still like to know how to turn this auto delete function off if possible. I bought this phone because I was sick of how controlling the iPhone was, don't really want another phone that does what it wants, haha.
Up until today it used to just ask me if I want to delete older messages everytime I went into messages, but now its just decided it's going to do it.
Temp. Fix-ish.
I don't want to bump an old thread and I don't know if this has been solved yet but when I discovered this I did some tinkering and discovered it appears to be triggered by backing out of the messaging service using the back key. The trick is to use the home key to take you back to the home screen. This will allow you to always have "Delete old messages" unticked.
Until a fix is out I hope this helps.
I had this issue before!
Surprisingly, it went away after flashing to another firmware (which turned out not liking) and then flashing back to my old firmware via Kies.
If you're unwilling to go that route, then I suggest using a different messaging app such as Handcent SMS or something like it and bypass the default messaging app all together. It doesn't look as nice as the default messaging app IMHO but it does not have all the quirks the former gives (like changing 3-SMS long messages to an MMS automatically...irritating!)
I heard Froyo will be fixing the annoyance I just mentioned. Maybe once the official Froyo from Samsung comes out all these small annoyances would go away.
That 3-long SMS to MMS is annoying because I get unlimited SMS but it charges me the standard rate for MMS so it's stupid.
I never really reach the 5000 limit and I'm happy using the home key method as it is but good options otherwise.
I've been running CM6-RC3 on my N1 for the past two days. Everything has been speedy and problem free until this morning.
I keep all my text messages (all that I've received since i got my phone in June) and have them backed up (thank god)...
This morning I received a text from a friend; I reply and turn my phone's screen off. A minute later I receive two more messages, but it takes a while to load them. I press the back button to check the other message and notice all my conversations have disappeared. Wiped completely.
I've made sure that I don't have the 200 sms limit enabled....
I'm just wondering now: Is there a cap on how many total messages Android will store (I'd imagine so, but I've not read anywhere about it).
I'm using a HTC Hero and i've got at least 300 smses on my phone and it is still alright. I don't think that theres any limit for smses. It might be limited to the amount of space on your phone, but since smes are text they should take up really little space hence practically there is no cap on sms storage (unless you have a couple of million smses stored).
I'm talking more like 4000-5000 messages (sms and mms). I realize that its just text and very minimal, but I still wonder why everything was erased.
Maybe its a bug in CM...
But anyone else heard of a limit in Android?
By the way, I checked again I have around 1100 smes. I don't think that android has any limitations at all. All new smartphone oses don't have such a limit. Highly likely that it is a bug with CM

I had this happen to me at CM6 RC2. I was at about 8,000 SMS messages total. All limits removed as well. I have various backups from Nandroid and Titanium backup but I don't care too much. Unlike you I didn't notice the clearing nor what I did to trigger it.
I got my Droid X at the end of last summer. Not long after I started using Handcent for texting because it had a lot more options. Afterwards (still several months ago) I noticed that the default texting program no longer worked and when I would try to use it Handcent would stop working until I did a battery pull.
Then a few months ago Handcent started causing problems as it would mess up and force close most times that I would receive a picture message. It would require exactly 2 battery pulls, every time no more or less, in order for me to be able to text again. I shrugged it off and dealt with it until now.
Last night I downloaded the gb update and now I essentially cannot text at all. Everything on the phone works fine, until I try texting. I can send one but as soon as I receive one back, it causes Handcent to freeze up and the whole phone freezes until I pull the battery. I have pulled the battery more than 15 times hoping the problem would stop but no luck so far. I also noticed my AOL and school email now pop up error messages and will not sync.
Sorry for the long explanation but I thought explaining the details may be helpful to all of you who are smarter than me at this haha. Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated as I have no idea what to do and I would prefer to avoid doing a factory reset or deleting Handcent if possible since it has a lot of important messages in it to me.
Thank you thank you thank you!
Handcent doesn't store any of your messages. Unistall and try Gosms instead. It has more features and works better
Messages in Handcent stay there until you delete them, I have several thousand and they can be searched through with the features it has. I could pay to have them backed up I believe but its not worth that. I'm pretty sure I tried Go Sms for one day and thought it was terrible. (Message times would be wrong even after I tried to fix the options for it. Issues with pictures and other stuff) I might install again just to see if it will work at all but I'm having my doubts
No actually Handcent does NOT STORE YOUR MESSAGES. All of your message are stored in the data folder and will not go away unless you manually delete them. Unistalling the application will have absolutely no effect on your messages
