[Q] Square up credit card reader dongle - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Has anyone tried this with Android on their HD2? This would really be helpful to me if it works.
Thanks
https://squareup.com/get-started

I have it sitting right here. I'm on HD2 with Dark's Beta 2 of desire ace. I use it as a daily. Works great for me. I can switch between different android builds on one SD card so maybe I'll boot something else to see if it works with that.
Free was a nice price for this type of mod. The app seems to work just fine and you can use it to manually input credit card numbers. My problem, which seems to happen with the T-Mo HD2 and G1, is that it buzzes and asks you to swipe again constantly. There seems to be some problem with how the reader makes noise and the program decodes the noise into the number. Thats what I hear anyway. In a pinch, when I am dealing with a "firend" who I know will never pay me back, I can just enter a number and give Square 3.5% or whatever they take for a manual entry.
Let me know if anyone has a solution or a working version.

I had a similar problem with my brother in-law's Tmobile G-2, It would keep buzzing once the reader was plugged in. (Kept saying it was present, then it wasn't). A simple solution to that problem was plugging in the reader FAST. I mean, push it down with a pop, once that happens, it doesn't keep buzzing.
Not sure if this will help, but hope it does.

I had a problem with it not reading my card. It kept saying too re swipe the card fast. I ran a voice recording program and then re ran squareup and it worked perfectly. I used andrecord.
I retested and as long as andrecord is working in the background, the app and reader work fine.
I am using a US Tmo HD2 with the Energy Android build.

Can't pick up the phone! Anyone else?

Well, thats it, I actually can't pick up my phone when I get a call. I can push the green pick up button as many times as I want, but it wont respond, and I end up having to call people back. Anyone else with this issue? (phone info in sig)
I am only going to take a guess and say that you have a lot of programs that run in the background.
Maybe try not using auto rotate.
I agree with Neobbs although when I first read the subject, I thought maybe you needed to work out more....
Same problem here. I can have the phone in my hands looking at it straight up when the phone rings and the phone goes black for about 5 seconds (or about 2 rings) and then the caller id comes up and I start hitting the call/talk button to answer. It goes to VM eventually and me hitting the green button ends up bringing up the recent call list. Auto rotate is disabled, but I do have weatherbug, open home, caller lookup and IM running in the background. Oh... and I have the transistions/animations enabled. That's all i can think of. I'll try removing the caller lookup app to see if it eliminates the problem.
hi,im running rc33 stock rom on bronze tmo g1 in singapore..it happened many a times, even on a cold boot up..wonder what is the actual problem here, mine is not rooted at all..

he means.. why would you not root your G1???
I think it's a good, fair and valid question.
Do you have installed a customer ring tone ? if yes, choose original ring tone and try again.
I had the same problem when I started using my phone. I dunno what changed but the prob. has disappeared or I got used to hold the pickup button down for a bit longer automatically. I got the feeling that this helped the issue.
My phone is RC33 not rooted... and to answer you question: I've tried but I'm still fighting with my XP to accept the USB driver.
Guess again!

mine does the same randomly. Straight after a factory reset.
nothing installed, and my G1 is not rooted (yet).
has anyone found a solution for this problem?
Using RC33 with weatherbug running in the background, but it occurs with it installed and without it installed
I swear, the G1 must be the worst phone ive ever used
can't wait for the touch pro 2 now...
google can't release polished software if their lives depended on it.. selling a beta phone is just bs

Yep, must be terrible if about 4 or 5 people have this problem out of the thousands who have bought it....
I've never had any of these problems, but im guessing they're (probably) firmware related.

most probably just call back and arent bothered to find out how to fix it on xda
anyways, when you say firmware related, what did you mean?
I installed JF 1.42, and before that, his earlier versions, and way before that my phone started out with RC18, which I then rooted. Would it be linked to that? I've wiped my phone like a dozen times, but the problem is reoccurring perhaps once or twice a day, out of about 30 phone calls a day
additionally, although this may be linked to t-mobiles ****ty service, have you guys noticed a large increase in dropped calls?
I use my phone in both austin tx and houston, and in both locations, about every 10 calls is dropped, I dont know if its just the horrible service they have, or when I move from a location with 3g to edge.
With the new radio, the dropped calls have reduced in number, but still occur randomly
Also, one more thing, and a little off topic, but this has been bothering me,
Is there anyone to get a SMS application that allows me to type using a numpad or something similar on the screen? or at least, have spell correct, cause chompsms' keyboard is way too small to use one handed and still have legible messages, unlike the iphone where the errors would be auto corrected

I'm in austin, tx too and I also get the black screen of death almost every time I get an incomming call so maybe it is a location based thing? My g1 is rooted and I have over 70 apps installed and I'm not about to uninstall them 1 by 1 to see which one could be causing it. In the past, rings extended was said to be the one causing the problem but I don't have that installed.
Also, there have been enough requests for t9 and auto correct with chomp, I'm sure it will be in the upcomming updates
Im running Haykuro now and haven't had a single incident so far. Also, I have 73 (yes, seventy-three) MB of free system memory as I moved pretty much EVERYTHING to the SD card. In return, my phone is unable to boot without my SD card... which is a bit strange.

Dual Booting WinMo/Android

I am trying to dual boot WinMo and Android and having some issues with Android. Hopefully somebody has got this working on the Rhodium. I got it booted, but I can't access data, make calls, and its stuck in landscape mode. Can anyone help me with some tips, or settings changes?
Edit: Got the landscape issue handled. When I call I can't hear nothing, so I assume the hardware install failed. I can text, so I have service. No data. Any suggestions or help?
The thread says there are many issues with TP2 AKA Rhodium.

Yes, but that doesn't mean that someone doesn't have it working. Or can at least help with getting 1 of the 3 issues working.

I'd be interested in this as well...
I know it's frustrating, but you're just going to have to wait around for awhile. The developers are making progress, but it's still very slow going, especially with sound. Most hardware doesn't work at all, and the working hardware sometimes doesn't work properly.
For data, make sure you're using a kernel later than kernel 4, which is the kernel where data support was added. (links and info about the latest Android build can be found in my signature, called "Rhodium Android"). Also make sure you've manually configured an APN or use a new userland (system.sqsh) that has automatic APN configuration.
If you can find it, try using Kernel 13 for built in speaker in phone call support, as Kernel 14 (in the latest packages) displays oddly (though otherwise works). If you're using an earlier zImage (kernel) and don't want to upgrade, you can use the front speaker workaround, where you call your voicemail, boot with HaRET, and let it automatically hang up. After that workaround, the front speaker works with phone calls on the earlier kernels.
Hope that answers all your questions

simple enough! Go Here and then download the android 2.1 files once downloaded place to root of sd card after a fresh format. then make sure you copy BOTH startup files for the rhodium to the sd card (not sure if you need both but thats how mine works) and boot
I have full 3g and calls just no sound, wifi, bluetooth, gps but i havent changed the zimage in a while so dont know if there is a working one or not.
I ended up getting XDANDROID from another thread, and it seems to work quite well. The data, sound, and orientation all worker immediately. The only thing is that the apps from Marketplace won't get out of Starting Download, but I looked it up and that seems to be a common issue with the Android Marketplace. Thanks for the help!
XANDROID is awesome.
I just can't get it to shut down. I wonder if there's some trick to get it back to Windows Mobile without restarting the phone?
I am interest in this too
but looks like have to wait a bit for testing

You have to restart the phone, it's simply not possible to do otherwise. The misconception is that HaRET/Android simply run along side Windows Mobile, when in reality, HaRET kicks Windows Mobile out of RAM, then loads the Linux kernel and eventually Android. You're essentially restarting your device into Android when you use HaRET, so you must restart in order to load Windows Mobile again.
Does anyone know specifically which version has working speaker (for playing music, etc?) And also, what is the proper way to get the apps on the SD card to install? I move them up one folder level as I read in another thread is necessary, but when i boot into Android they are still not showing up in programs list?

To answer both your questions:
There's no build with the speaker working for music, games, etc. The front speaker is working with phone calls, but even those builds don't support the back speaker doing other functions. The developers are working on this, but so far they haven't gotten it working yet.
There should be a folder on your MicroSD card called AndroidApps, and if there isn't, create one. Then, place the APK files you have into the AndroidApps folder and Android will install them on the next boot.

HD2 Freezing Problem among others!

1- Hello guys, I have an T-Mobile USA HD2. I love it but it freezes like crazy, 2-3 times a day if not more. I ran Task 29 to delete every possible trail of previous roms followed by a hard reset but nothing. It will still freeze.
2- I also have a lot of signal problems. Its constantly changing from 3G to Edge on the same location. I know that is not normal so I spoke to T-Mobile and they changed the SIM card but it will still change the signal back and forth. I re-flashed couple of radios but nothing, I only accomplished to drain more battery.
3- BSB Tweaks is an awesome app but there are issues with the Rotation Option. If I enable Rotation to the "Start" -> "home screen" the photo album and music will be affected because the already come with landscape support. I tried to disable the landscape support for these using a registry editor but did not find a way.
Is there any solutions for these problems? Any help will be very much appreciated, not only from be but as well from others with the same or similar problems. Thanks in advance to all of you.
Note: I noticed the recently released TMUSA HD2s come with a yellow reset button. I bought my back on March when they sold out Nation wide with in the firs 4 hours and it comes with a RED reset button. This might explain a lot. If you know something please share. Thanks!
I would like to know if there is help for freezing issue.
I also did Task 29, flashed few different radios, few different roms incoluding stock, and it still happens. If my phone freezes I have to try for 20 minutes to restart it, as it hangs everywhere starting with bootloader, to manila.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
I had a similar issue as well and it turned out to be a cab file I had installed that was not compatible for my ROM. I had to go through and isolate which cab it was by using the date it was added and when I noticed the issues.
When your phones freeze....does it do it radomly or while trying to access or carry out anything specific. Your problem could be caused by any number of reasons but giving as much detail regarding your problem keeps you from getting so frustrated trying all sorts of fixes. Out of curiosity what ROM's are you both currently running?
I am currently using Elegancia ROM from August 23. Before I was using Energy ROM. I tried newest, stock Rom for T-Mobile HD2 but it didn't solve the issue.
I tried reinstalling HSPL, but it didn't help either.
The problem started after I put Ubuntu 0.2 on my sd card. I was playing with it for a little and it suddenly rebooted my HD2. I though, OK, no big deal, it's just in infant stage.
So I booted Windows again (energy rom with 2.12 radio) but it hanged while Sense was loading. I wasn't able to get it back to life after few reboots so I did a hard reset (vol up/down power on) It worked fine.
My problem mostly happens when I run android and when it reboots for some reason I can't get back to windows. It hangs, sometimes it hangs on bootloader before it even shows me radio and data version!! sometimes it goes past bootloader and hangs right after sense launches, and sometimes it is perfectly fine.
It also seems that when I just use WinMo it is fine, I can power down, and soft reset without major issues. But after running android I get that issues, especially when Android crushes.
I am thinking that android may be corrupting some WinMo files, but how is that possible? Android doesn't have access to NAND so technically it shouldn't prevent WinMo from booting on bootloader level.
Please let me know if you need me to explain more.
Thanks for your help

PS. I don't have any custom cabs installed at this point. I have super fresh and clean installation of elegancia rom
Yeah...Android may be the culprit. I have shyed away from trying it because I have talked to quite a few people (not on XDA) that have tried it on the HD2 and they have the same issues. The Android OS really makes the HD2 unstable. I personally am going to hold off on the Android bandwagon until a little more time passes, after all WinMo works just fine for me. Try just running on WinMo and see what happens. Based on what you have said, it runs fine as long as you are not using Android
yeah, it's is good idea to stay away for some time. But Android development needs testers. If no one is willing to test than there will be no improvement.
What I can't understand is that even after I do hard reset I still get freezes.

Yeah I agree with you on Android development needing testers. I do rely on my phone a lot for work purposes and I can't always afford to have the phone freezing up constantly.
Are you hard re-setting with the Android OS still installed?
Technically it is still installed but it is only present on the SD Card, and not anywhere else so it shouldn't matter. Next time I get freeze I will try to remove SD Card before hard resetting.
I tried booting few times with SD Card taken out, but it didn't help.

I have the same issue...i'm using energy rom and i noticed that lately its freezing like hell...at least twice a day...!! NRGZ already notice the freezing issue and is trying to solve it...but it still crashes. I'm constantly changing the rom as he updates...and right now i'm running the August 25.
Sometimes it crashes while being turned off...and i need to take the battery off to restart.
I had the same issue, all i did loaded a diff rom and formatted my sim card problem solved
I did format my SD Card many times. Did not help. I used recommended FAT32.
Yesterday my phone froze when I was trying to add program shortcut to Sense... silly.
I rebooted phone, it booted fine, but hang as soon as I went to check my TXT messages. Rebooted again and it is working fine until now.
I currently have Elegancia ROM with 2.12.50 radio, have not been using android for couple of days, but it is still there on my SD Card.
It is getting a bit frustrating. I wonder what else I can try to make it stop freezing.
KML
My phone rebooted again yesterday.
I couldn't boot to windows for the next 20 minutes... I tried about 10 times before it worked. 2 or 3 times it booted windows and froze as soon as I clicked on one of sense tabs.
I haven't played with Android for past week and the freezing problem is still an issue. I even removed andorid form my SD Card.
When all this happened I was just using skyfire to browse internet.
I am hopeless at this point. I have no idea what else I could try to make it stop rebooting and freeezing.
Any ideas?? I would greatly appreciate any help.
PS. I recently found a thread about a tool that searches for corrupt files on Android devices after clean flash, is there something similar available for WinMo?
Here is the thread I am talking about:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/fixflash-rom-flash-verify-and-repair-tool/
screen doesn't respond to touch
I just started having this issue today. I have used darkstones most recent build from the 18th. it has worked perfectly till today. I use energy roms. i just installed a older rom today still have the same problem. this problem appears weither in droid or winmo. All the hard keys still function and the phone can receive calls. Thanks for any help you may be to lend.
my phone just froze again.
All I did was take it out of my pocket and unlock screen, and there it is: FREEZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Funny thing is that Android doesn't freeze for me... it crashes sometimes, but never freezes. It is only WinMo that freezes on me or doesn't boot. Android always boots.
I really wish the NAND was accessible so I could flash Android to NAND and forget about WinMo

you, me and 17,000+ HD2 owners are all wishing for that exact thing
Your issue with the freezing/rebooting is stumping me too. You've flashed different ROM's, including stock, done hard resets, checked the battery pins, reformatted the SD card and even tried running the phone without the SD card inserted...do I have all that right? The fact that it doesn't show the symptoms when running Android just makes it that much more mysterious. I'd say it all points to a hardware issue, but if it doesn't act that way when you're in Android, that (probably) shoots that theory out of the water. But, at the same time, running task 29 and reflashing different ROM's should also have eliminated any possible software-based causes, so....
the only thing that comes to my mind is micro SIM card. I did an upgrade on my ATT account to get iPhone (traded for HD2) and those fu...ers at ATT wouldn't let me keep my regular sized SIM card. I had to use my old SIM card and cut it's inside to place micro sim in it. I used a regular sied SIM to hold micro SIM in place.
I don't think however that this is a problem because I believe my phone froze few times before I did that SIM card swap besides, I have no issues with phone calls or reception both in Android or WinMo.
I am clueless at this point.
I just got another Android version and will try it to see how it works. If I have any problems I will try using my wive's SIM card to see if it helps with freezing and WinMo booting.
KML
EDIT: ANDROID just rebooted itself. 2 minutes after clean installation. geee, I am leaning towards Hardware being the issue.
What I did is:
1. open browser
2. go to google
3. search for speedtest
4. open speedtest.net
and Android rebooted itself and now my phone can't go past Tmobile bootloader logo (pink square with 'stick together' letters)
I will put different SIM inside now and try everything again

Good call, that's about the only other thing to try. However....have you tried running WM with sense disabled, to see if it still has the freezing/rebooting issues? That might at least narrow the problem down to something sense-related (which is easily the most common cause of any software-related issue on this phone)

I have NOT tried that but I will. The problem is that I often can't get past bootloader logo...
I modified my post above so please read it (I mentioned Android crashing)
thanks for all your suggestions
I just tried different SIM card. Phone booted fine to WinMo, and froze as soon as I clicked on Messaging tab in sense.
I will try to disable Sense for now.
I disabled Sense, rebooted WinMo launched Android repeated operation of trying to get to speedtest. Site launched, but phone rebooted after a while.
I am getting to conclusion that some software including flash causes my phone to reboot and then I can't get it to boot again..
Right now my phone is stuck again on bootloader. I already tried rebooting twice.
What I noticed is that every time my phone freezes it gets a little warmer in the lower left corner
What hardware is located in that area?

[Q] Problem Making Phone Calls w/ Android

I loaded the Nexus One port of Froyo on my HD2 and everything seems to work flawlessly. Sound, data transfer, bluetooth, wi-fi and everything else under the sun.
I do, however, have one major problem: The phone function does NOT work correctly.
Sometimes it works just fine, sometimes it doesn't. When it works, that's it. It will continue to function correctly for the life of the uptime. When it doesn't, same thing. The only thing you can do is reboot the phone and hope that it starts working correctly again.
What happens when it doesn't work? When you attempt to make a phone call, everything sounds really robotic and high/squeaky pitched. When I say high pitched, I'm talking alvin and the chipmunks after inhaling helium. After attempting to make a phone call when the problem occurs, the sound/vibration across the entire phone ceases to work until a reboot.
I have tried a plethora of different radios including 2.08, 2.10, 2.14, 2.15 and now I'm on 2.07. I originally started using android with EnergyROM loaded but now I'm on miri xtralight. Nothing I do seems to make a change to this behavior. Whether I use the stock Hastarin 8.2 kernel that comes with Froyo or upgrade to 8.5.1 makes no difference.
I have seen other people who have this problem but I haven;t seen a cause/solution.
There seem to be so many people out there using the HD2 with android with no errors. Would anyone have an idea what is causing this?
Just a quick shot. Did you try formatting your SD card with the SD formatter?

I formatted the SD card through my reader on windows 7 before reloading android.
BUMP!
I've noticed a pattern here. If the first phone call of a reboot is made over bluetooth, the phone will always work correctly.

NFC issues using Android Pay

Does anyone have issues using Android Pay? I unlock my phone and wave the phone over the reader (like I did with my iPhone) and nothing happens! I leave it there for a good few seconds sometimes and it doesnt work.
If I switch off and one and try it'll sometimes work but then next time the same problem happens.
Are there any app's to try the reader strength and to show it's detecting a contactless reader or nfc transponder?
Regards Steve

Remove any cover, and try putting the phone's screen on the terminal. Some phone's have that.
Just tried it again today after removing and adding android pay again and with and without a case. Support have said that the sweet spot is just behind the top of the camera. Keeps asking me to try again only to show the same message again. NFC Bluetooth pairing is flakey with a lot of precise movements needed to get it to work

Are there any app's to try the reader strength and to show it's detecting a contactless reader or nfc transponder?

Indeed NFC on N6 is very picky - it just requires some practice to get it right. First - phone must be unlocked, second - touch at center of terminal with camera and hold it steady for about 1-2 sec.
I've ended up changing the phone and the new one works better. Ended up with the new Wileyfox Swift 2X

if u r using nokia 6 ta-1000 then fyi it doesnt has NFC.
I fully checked and my model of phone did. The apps and option for NFC was in the menu and also allowed NFC pairing.

Update on Android Pay issues
After about a month of using this, I can confirm that this works well in most restaurants and supermarkets. I still have occasional issues using this on the Tube and the Bus, but I am hoping once TFL do their system upgrade this too may go away.
NFC and contactless problem
Anyone having contactless payment or NFC problems I realized today where NFC is on Nokia 6 it's based in middle of camera and light as for rest of phones are based else where on back these are in middle of camera and light hopefully this helps
..
Mine works perfectly using Barclays as my payment app.
