Sprint - HTC Warranty - EVO 4G General

I found this info out today from my local Sprint store.
In case anyone cares and hasn't heard already, HTC has yanked the warranty on its phones away from Sprint. According to the rep, Sprint has sent way too many HTC phones not under warranty back to HTC after issuing replacements. So now, HTC is handling all warranties directly. Which means, you guessed it, sending your device to them and waiting a minimum 2 weeks to get a phone back. Sprint will still replace a phone under warranty but it will cost you a $35 convenience fee.
I would like to thank Sprint, for being retarded, and HTC, for bad customer service on repairs. Business customers, much less individual customers, should not have to wait that amount of time for replacement/fixed device. And there is no way I should have to pay $35 for Sprint to support one of it's defective products.
I can remember the days when a new device would be overnighted to me if there was an issue. But I guess Sprint only cares about companies with 25+ lines.

Insurance makes that 35 dollar fee NULL, Even if you break your screen unless its broken into 3+ pieces has mobo damage or water damage. All other damage replaced for free.

I don't understand why you are hating on Sprint, when they were apparently going out of their way to replace customers' handsets - even when out of warranty. Sounds pretty generous to me.

I understand that....but in the end it only hurts the Sprint/HTC customer because now I have to wait 2 weeks for a device instead of replacement on site. Do you think Verizon or AT&T has this same problem?
Of course, it could be that HTC is getting hammered with returned devices and can't keep it all straight.
Either way, the situation does not favor the consumer.

stop beating dead horses. pay for TEP or deal directly with the manufacturers. bottom line. IMO opinion best insurance set up at ANY carrier. Very beneficial to customers.

Verizon, and I can confirm this, still supports over night shipping of a replacement for free. As long as its with in the 1 year manufacture warranty.

T-Mobile too, except $20 overnight or free standard shipping,

Sprint will do this....but only through a dedicated rep. In order to get one, have to be a business with 20-25+ lines. I only have 13.

It has been like that for a long time. We were with Verizon before and Alltel before that and the whole time I had a dedicated rep locally. Both times with Sprint no dedicated rep unless we had 20+ lines.
I have even complained to Sprint and had the request escalated 3 times. All requests have been denied.

THIS IS NOT HTC DOING IT!!!! I use to be a Sprint retail employee this is literally taught to us as a convenience charge. See instead of having to wait 2-3 weeks for HTC to do it Sprint will do it in a day but for a fee. They use to do it for free now they are charging, only nice thing about this is it covers some extra stuff now like physical damage and if you have insurance there is no fee. So yeah it isn't HTC trust me they are doing it for all phones!

this really is a brilliant strategy
I have a smashed spare EVO (both LCD and Glass is cracked), so according to this I could take it to the Sprint store and get it repaired for $35 WITHOUT insurance? Hmmm... sounds way too good to be true. If it is, I wonder if that still applies if I got the phone via bestbuy.
Edit: Now that I think about it, aren't there TWO different insurance options. I'm guessing you need the the lower one (non-TEP) for this to apply at all.
Wonder if this applies to missing rsa keys, for 4g.
I would think that would fall under software upgrades. Hopefully it does, so i can get 4g back
I currently have insurance on my TP2, but now I'm thinking about removing it for the new phone. NOT having it actually sounds MORE cost-effective, unless serious/water damage occurs.
Phatmans law: Once you cancel the insurance comes the time you need it most.
Oh so sweet
I can confirm this. Im a technician at a corporate store. and we started this the 23rd.
Its quite amazing. But to note, we only repair phones at no charge with TEP or w/o if its 3 parts or less.
Probably trying to head off a class action lawsuit from the reboot issue.
I rarely see the value in TEP. $7/month doesn't sound like a lot of money, but it comes to $84 a year. When my wife lost her Moto Q9c a couple of years ago, I bought her a different Q9c on Craigslist for $75. TEP would have required me to pay a $100 deductible on top of the $7 monthly fee that I would have been paying all along.
My biggest fear with the Evo is breaking the glass or LCD. Now that Sprint offers to replace it for $35, that fear is all but gone. Don't forget that most phones come with a 1 year warranty and Sprint repair centers will do their best to repair warranty issues in the store (they replaced my Touch Pro keyboard for free). If you're a Premier Sprint customer, you're also eligible for annual upgrades. In a year, I expect Sprint will have a fancier dual-core phone available at which point my Evo will become Craigslist or eBay fodder to fund the cost of my upgrade.
TEP might make sense if you're accident prone, absent-minded, or abusive, but for me, well, I'm still taking my chances (knocks on wood).

Great news sprint is just getting better and better
I don't see what all the hype is about because it's the same rip off deal TEP subscribers had to begin with. No matter what's wrong with your phone the crappy Sprint tech's will find a way to say it's water damage or it's user damage to make you pay that $100 insurance charge. Sprint insurance/repair centers are the biggest rip offs around. Now if they said for the people that pay them $7/mo you get no hassle phone exchanges and when the cheaply made usb ports break, you don't force insurance down our throats when you can either fix i or replace the phone for free. ok, off my soap box now but I still don't see any changes worth even announcing
It doesnt count for extreme physical damage, like a shattered/spiderwebbed LCD, or liquid damage, thats what Asurion is for.

TEP Policy Change AGAIN!

This was posted by a Sprint tech on the facebook page it has me pissed beyond belief
*Policy Change* Excessive damage to your phone is no longer covered by in-store repair which includes SMASHED LCD screens. Acceptable cracks are defined as 2 cracks or less under 1 inch long. You may make a claim through Asurion if you dont qualify for the in-store repair. If you dont have insurance, YOU CANNOT PAY $35...! You will have to buy a NEW phone, more than likely at FULL PRICE. Please be careful guys! An Otterbox is looking like a good investment right now.
level 1 is a content issue: like if a customer needs a phonebook swap, diagnostic (SLATE) testing, software upgrade, etc.
Level 2 is an eligable in-store repair/exchange issue: mechanical/electrical failure, eligable cracks, defects, etc.
Lev...el 3 issues are not eligable for in-store repair/exchange: Damage to the mother board, smashed devices broken in 3 or more peices, cracked screens, lost/stolen, smashed screens etc.
It is up to us techs but trhe guidelines are pretty spelled out for us.
Since the policy changed... would they let you add insurance?

I have to agree with this statement . Its getting ridiculous , I had a claim under HTC warrantly due to the power button sinking into the phone and the typical bezel crack . Im wondering if Im gonna get billed for a phone now because of this . Dont get me wrong I like Sprint I really do but if this keeps up I might be having a Thunderbolt . Atleast with Verizon I know I will be getting screwed upfront , also i get a discount through my job for them . So might actually work out better for me . It sucks I love the Evo I really do but this is getting a bit over board . Plus I have noticed people in the "Corporate Repair Stores" are the rudest people I have encountered . They easily dismiss any complaint you have and dont give you a second look .
Thank you for the head's up!

Read your contract the only reasons for them to let you out of your contract is for 1.Data roaming to extremes
2.you have absolutley no coverage in your area
3.they change your MAIN PLAN! and for that you have 30days and then they can change you with out your consent.
TEP changes do not fall under any of those catagories and the fine print does say they have the right to modify or change or cancel your contract.

Correct.
Changes to TEP doesn't void any contractual agreements.
Sprint has the most service and repair options whether we like them or not. Other major carriers doesn't even compare when it comes down to service and repair corporate locations.
Don't get me wrong I'm not in total agreement with all the back and forth policies. The way it was explained to me, was Sprint lose a lot of money doing what other carriers doesn't. Like backing up manufacturer warranties by playing middle man.
Correct me if I missed the mark somewhere. This is a temporary conversational thread.

I don't see what the big deal is. I don't abuse my phone but if I walk into a sprint store with a beat up phone, I surely wouldn't expect sprint to warranty it or do free repairs. Putting straight forward limits on excessive wear is understandable. Sprint has been going way above and beyond by replacing and repairing broken phones while other carriers dont.

Enjoy paying more for the whole term of your contract while you wait for your next upgrade. As well as having the same insurance coverage. If that your reason for leaving, you're walking into the same situation with any other carrier.

Unlucky or Tricky?

I have my Evo in moderate to bad condition. The screen has a crack over the front camera and each corner has a chip. The stand is basically unpolished and the rear camera has a few scratches.
I also shaved off the black paint on the rear rim, which makes it unique.
Anyways, my plan is to call assurion for a replacement. ($100) so that I can trade it for a $150 off the Evo 3D. (They wont accept a poor-condition Evo...)
Is that a good idea or is it against some type of government law or something...? :sarcasm:
My 1 year upgrade is on August 28, so I don't know what other tricks to pull out my sleeve.
Ideas welcome! Trolls too!

*Technically* what you're planning on doing is a form of insurance fraud.
If I'm reading your post correctly, you'll be paying $100 for a replacement to get the $150 trade in credit? Is the $50 you save really worth the
a) time you'll spend filing an insurance claim, packing & sending sending your phone back
b) the guilt of doing something that's technically against the law in many (if not all) states.
Do it if you want, no one will judge you (at least I won't). But I personally probably wouldn't go through all the trouble for $50.

I don't see fraud here. He is paying for insurance and the phone is damaged. If you had a car you were thinking of selling and were in an accident you would use the insurance to fix it right before selling, as selling it crashed would be bad for you. He is doing the equivalent, he has insurance to fix the phone if it is damaged, which it is (screen crack). Now if he damaged the screen on purpose just so he could file a claim that would be different.

Wrong.
What he's asking is NOT illegal in any way, technically.
He buys insurance and their policy states that up to three times in any 12 month period you can, for whatever reason, pay them $100 for a replacement that will most likely be a refurbished unit.
This is a legal, contractually designated transaction between a company that sells a service and the consumers that purchase the service.
edit- if he says it was stolen then keeps/sells the old one then yes, technically that's fraudulent.

If you and everybody thought like this insurance costs would skyrocket.
It is considered fraud based on the story he gave us. Have him call the insurance company and tell the truth. You know the same story he just told us. Something tells me they wont offer him a replacement. In order to get his phone replaced, he would have to lie or change his story. Therefore the insurance company would replace his phone under false pretenses and thus fraud.

So its fraud if I tell them that I broke my screen and I will pay 100 for the replacement and in the future ill exchange it for a newer phone, restarting my contract and keeping the insurance or start a new insurance with the new phone I buy from sprint?
OP should do it. I do not see any problem with it. Enjoy new phone at a cheaper price.
Sorry, I might have misread the OP (brain fried, it was like 4am I believe).
When you pay the deductible, do you send your phone in? If so, that's fine. But if you are reporting it as lost/stolen/completely broken, but you plan on keeping it (which is what I implied), then yes that's fraud.

No it's not you moron. He has the insurance and the insurance covers a cracked screen. It does not matter what he plans to do with the phone as long as he sends the other one back. Dude.. seriously.. come to your senses and understand the insurance you buy is not a warranty or guarantee, it is a service agreement that you purchase. As with any paid service there are terms. Exchanging $100 and your current device for a replacement (for WHATEVER reason) up to 3 times in 12 months IS the agreement. Asurion pays (on average) almost nothing to refurbish a phone then turns around and trades it to someone who is ALREADY paying them $8/mo for their phone and another $100.
The device I have now is a replacement. I called Asurion and said (100% true story) "I'd like to have my device replaced. I dropped it and there is a tiny crack in the corner. I'm sure it will be an easy refurb for you guys." They sent me a brand new-in-box unit, never refurbished, never activated.
When someone lies to avoid paying the $100 and/or submitting their old device they are circumventing the agreement thus committing a form of fraud, I believe it's called "theft by deception". When someone intentionally bricks their device so the carrier or the OEM will replace it for free that is fraud. If you had half as much clarity as you have integrity you would understand these distinctions. Hell, call Asurion and ask them about it.

So today, I was getting everything straight so we could transfer our number to AT&T. The reason we are switching is bcause Sprint has NO service at my house. I had talked to several reps from Sprint, all of which said that the Early Termination Fee would be waived since we did not have coverage. Well, today I found out that even having been told the ETF would be waived, me and my mother would be required to send our phones into Sprint or we would be charged. WTF?! They are going to charge us if we don't send back phones that WE payed for? One of them over a year ago! I think this is BS. I will fight it as long as I can. What do I need to tell them? I wasn't told this the first times I was told the ETF would be waived.. so I may go on that. Way to go Sprint though, piss u off even as were leaving.

Part of the contract deal is they "absorb" the difference of retail vs. the 2 or 1 year contract phone price. They should technically offer you a proration of that difference for each phone based on the remaining contract time.

Just call & ***** for one week. Hears how I got out of cantract last march (becuz of bs gps on froyo & 2.1) I called & *****ed *****ed some more an other day. Then one day I woke up with a hang over in a bad ass mood. I called them & told them I had nothing to do that day & it was raining out. And proceeded to tell them that if they did NOT resolve my problem on this call I would continue to waste there time & call them all day therefore over hours of them paying customer service to listen to my *****ing insted of them helping other customers which would equal more than my early termination fee. Rofl & it works on there 3rd call. Now I did not leave sprint I only wanted off contract cuz the way I see it sprint had there dam name printed on a phone that said it had gps & it did not work & the only reason I was on contract was because they subsidized the price of the phones. A phone with a defective piece of **** gps until gingerbread and custom rom over a year later.
So you could find some thing you don't like about the phone (a software bug) and focus on that. Maybe the sound on the camera in gb there no mute?
If you know how to ***** then you WILL get your way.

My phone cost over $600 to buy outright when I got it but I only paid $199 and signed a two year contract. So I'm sure someone feels that if I don't complete the contract they ought to get something back. Just sayin...
ETF is one thing to get out of, but part of the contract was that they would give you an expensive phone for cheap if you stay with them. You are leaving so they want their phone back. I say THEIR phone because the you are actually paying for the phone over the time of the contract's length.
Also, why did you wait so long to cancel when you had no coverage at your house? Didnt you check coverage BEFORE signing up with them? After all, it IS a lot of phone and you are getting into a legal contract.
Or... You could work them for a free Airave. Same thing here our house is a deadzone. The thing works great and I npw have full signal at home.
I'm also with sprint on this one. The entire point of the ETF is is to absorb the cost you caused them to incur when giving you the subsidy. Returning the phone seems like the right and reasonable thing to do if you they are going to waive the fee. Our phones are basically minicomputers now and are not cheap to us or the carriers.
OP, were you aware you had no service within the trial period? How about the airave?

Purchased my Epic on Ebay, best purchase I ever made for $200.

Alright sorry I just got back to service. Where we live, there is no high speed internet, so the Airave is out, we actually have one, but no internet. Second, we just moved. We have been wth sprint for 8 1/2 years. Where we moved to doesn't have service. And for the last poster, I bought my Epic off of Craigslist, part of what upsets me about hving to send it in.

If you bought it off of Craigslist they have absolutely no right to it politely tell them to die in a fire. As for the Airave you will probably have to send it back unless you were crazy enough to pay them for it (got mine for free) find a sprint retail store or ups it (ground is 5-7bucks most anywhere in the states).
I didn't see all that much about what other phones you have, but the ones bought from sprint at a reduced cost are subject to the etf.. Now if its been bought from eBay/Craigslist/ect. ect. I can only suggest you tell them to die in a fire, if that don't work give the folks at the executive customer service dept. a call 703-433-4401 (Consumerist)

Yeah ill send the Airave in, they are sending a return kit for it. The other Epic was bought less than 6 months ago with the upgrade so ill probably just send it in. At&t would give us $85 for it which would cover the cost of the Captivate Glide which is what she got, but oh well I guess.

I was gonna say you could always sell it and you might make a buck or two off it after the ETF, but then I remembered that they increased the ETF's not too long ago.
If you were lucky enough to get it before the increase you could pay the ETF and sell it on eBay/Craigslist or here on xda & still come out ahead .

this whole debacle sounds like a mix up and either the op or sprint is very confused. sprint DOES NOT require you to send in the hard ware if they cancel the etf. who even told you this op? they cant even do anything with the phone besides use it for parts or refurb it. 1 or 2 hundred dollars is less than a drop in the bucket when your last earnings report said you were down 5 bil. (im looking at you sprint)
i think they just want you to send back the airave.

Wow tmo customers service is awesome

Just called in to request a port. I must've gotten the best csr on the planet. She was very polite and nice. Took care of my port request quickly. I then questioned about my huge ass first bill. She proceeded to credit me $70 activation fee plus fixed a couple other erroneous charges. Bill dropped from $181 down to $101. I'm very pleased and impressed with Tmobile so far. Came from vzw, those jerks were rude and disrespectful.

What did you say about the bill?
Try calling them to see if they will give you the unlock code for your phone.
I know a family member got 3 T-Mobile phones and they gave him emails of all three phones with unlock code and instructions when contacting customer service.
How the hell did you do that? Lol
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using Tapatalk 2
T-Mobile is is usually pretty good with that stuff. Most of the time the cs is tops.
I had a simalar experience. Had to fight verizon for them to cancel my line. Tmobile has been great!

Thats noting. I got ATT to drop my bill from $209 to $114. Threaten them to cancel and they will cave in
Ill have 3 lines at 35 each for activation. Verizon only charges 35 on primary maybe I'll use that as an argument

You have to have the phone on the account for so many days or prove that you paid outright for it. Then they can go through once you meet all the requirements.
Yes, T-Mo Customer Service is outstanding. You don't need to threaten to leave them for them to take action. Sure there are probably a few bad ones scattered around here and there but you can't blame them for that. After all, we're only human.
My friend called twice yesterday to see if he can extend his contract now 4 months early so that he can buy an S3 and both people said no. I found that quite lame, has anyone been able to extend their contracts early?

I think it really comes down to the area, and who you get a hold of. Its the exact opposite over here. My buddy is always fighting with Tmobile, and Verizon jumps at every chance to help me.

It also depends on how you reach out. My experience with AT&T has been that customer service is beyond terrible if you call in, but the employees at the corporate retail stores are extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Yes but I was only a few weeks early. 4 months is a long time for a full upgrade so you really can't blame them for that. They will give him an early upgrade but that's about it for now.

I wish the VZW was like that here. All the local stores treat me like I'm wasting their time unless I'm buying something. If I have an issue I just call in now. It really pissed them off when I had the guy on the phone FWD my early upgrade to the store so I could pick it up same day( after the store denied my early upgrade and said it wasn't possible). The guy at the counter threw the phone on the counter and walked away.

My personal dealings with Tmobile CSR have been stellar. They work with you like a human instead of a number.
One time I was trying to save dollars on my phone bill so I was looking around their website. I ended up disabling my family plan's text messages. Got a bill a month later for 600+, I freaked out.. and called. The lady explained how it was binding to the contract when making online changes. Long story short she understood, reset my plan like nothing happened and asked me to watch my clicks
Then I moved to an area with less than strong 4G. Reception and data was spotty anywhere in my new home. I was really considering moving to a different company. I called and they sent me a free signal repeater. I've had better service ever since.
Where their service may be rocky they treat us well. In a society where it's all about product we forget that service is part of the product.

Verizon is terrible at CS until you get to the higher ups. I had a EnV Touch before my current X2 andvi went through 8 phones and they refused to offer me something else when 7 of them were software problem's. My X2 is another hyped up ****ty phone unless you run a rom. A mass Exodus happened on this phone starting with release of GNex. Most everyone filed a BBB complaint and after getting good customer support they let me upgrade early in April almost 11 months after phones release. I know now to go to the nice people at their HQ rather then at the store. Complete idiots work their at mine.
My full upgrade isnt due until September, but they just said on the phone, I can get the S3 for 279 with rebate but the phone is back ordered!
