I've had my Epic for 2 weeks from the Sunday that just past. I'm starting to see some light scratches in the middle of my qwerty keyboard from sliding it open & closed. It starts (worst) at the #5 & goes down through the T, G, V, & Spacebar. Then from the #4 down to the comma & also #6 down to the spacebar.
So my questions are - Is this happening to anyone else? Is my phone defective and/or will Sprint or Samung warranty? Or do I have to just deal with it?
Any help or advise would be appreciated

Not happening to me.
Are u using a case? I hear some cases cause scratches. Or u may have a defective unit, my unit had a defective hinge that broke after a month os noral use n sprint fixxed it no prob. I have tep though so if u don't have tep and are out of 30 days they may charge u 35 bucks.
Sent from my Epic 4G
No I don't have a case & never used 1, it's just scratching from opening & closing the qwerty alone. I do have tep, but only had the phone for 16 days so I guess I'll just call Sprint 1st & see what they tell me
Thanks alot
Yeh, I have had 2 epics and my first one had an issue with scratches on the keyboard from sliding it out. My 2nd one hasn't had any issues like that though...
I ended up returning the first one because of a lot of screen wobble, well the 2nd one developed it in 3 weeks - month after getting it. It's definitely not a deal breaker but kind of sad since its so new.

1st - Stylus holder failed after 4 days
2nd - Alignment knackered
Will be phoning for a replacement tomorrow.
Is there actually anyone here who has had more than three?
I'm wondering if I made a BIG mistake!
dont worry
DOnt worry - sometimes you get unlucky.
My first one has been fine but I had about 4 MDAIIIs before I got one that actually worked properly. DOnt take it personally - its a great device.

4th: working fine so far - keeping fingers crossed (HT630)

Reading this forum, that inevitably covers posts about problems disproportionately, I'm sure I can be forgiven for being utterly convinced that I must have the record for replacement devices. Oh yes indeeedy a record breaking zero replacements - smug grin.

^^^ bastard!
my 8525 has been working great.. there are a few quirks here and there, but nothing major to replace.. its been 2 weeks now and so far so good... and i second the unlucky situations... when i get the 2125 smartphone from cingular, i think its the farraday or something like that i went through 6 replacements, then gave up on it and b!tched and B!tched at them for 3 months till they gave in and gave me the 8125/wizard for free
I've seen it mentioned before. There is a spot that is lightening on the screen where it gets warm above the processor. It is most noticable on lighter colors.
I am past 30 days of buying the device, so do I have to pay a $100 dollar deductible for the insurance on the phone to get it repaired? Or do I just go trade it out?
Someone please help me that has been through this before lol.
Also, are they still out of stock everywhere?
I've got the same thing... I didn't know this was a common issue...
I had the same issue that you did first i took it to a sprint repair store and they told me they could not do anything for me so then I called the sprint costumer service line and told them my story and they ended up sending me a referb overnight.
It's happening to my phone, as well as my brother with an Evo. It seems the processor is overheating and discoloring the screen. I bought it from radioshack and bought their warranty. I hope they don't give me any grief about it. I am actually holding out on returning it. The warranty is 1 year, so I think i will wait until close to the end of that.
Ive never seen this, can someone post pics?
what part of screen is that?
How many of you with this problem are overclocking?
I have it in mine as well. I don't overclock nor do I use WiFi tether often at all.
Interested in seeing a pic.
Also thought that i'd mention that I made a thread on this last week. Everyone experiencing this issue in my thread had a novatech lcd panel. Search for my thread there are a couple pics there. Also, im not really sure its the heat from the processor. My spot as well as all the others in the other thread is located about an inch above the back button.
Had the same problem on my first phone. I had to exchange it due to a blown earpiece speaker. So far 2 weeks into my replacement and I have no problem with the display. I'm not sure which screen I have, and am not 100% sure how to find out, but I'm sure my original phone was Novatec.
If 2.2 was rooted I would return this thing for replacement tomorrow. Really disappointed with this screen flaw.
I have this issue on my screen as well. Only noticeable on white or very light screens. I do overclock, but this manifested before I started doing that and even before I rooted the phone. It's a spot that looks noticeably whiter than the rest of the screen and, if the keyboard is up, would be on or close to the B key. (I've seen it called the B spot) my spot is over the spacebar and up the B key.
I can see how it would get irritating. It annoys me sometimes. And I agree. If 2.2 was rooted I would call HTC for factory warranty (i didst get insurance via radioshack)
...in 1943, I killed a drifter.
Had the same problem. It was a bout a 1/2" round white circle about and inch from the bottom of the screen. You can't see it on dark backgrounds, but you can on white. I have a Nova panel.
I was also past my 30 days, but sprint got me a replacement phone no fuss and no deductible. I never overclocked either.
Do you guys have the issue of the screen being loose at all? Reason I'm asking is because I'm hoping to get a new one as a replacement.
When the Epic first came out the forum was flooded with people who had the issue but lately that doesn't really seem to be the case. Maybe it was fixed in production like HTC fixed the glass separation problem with the EVO.

Weird. Got mine 2 days after the release and have had no problems of that sort.

The actual glass is loose?
I just got my third one in the month since I moved from the moment.
The first one the screen wasn't and wouldn't go into the phone, there was one corner and half the side that would not seat down to where it should be. The second had a nice one pixel wide line right down the middle of the screen. And my third and current one is perfect in every sense of the word!
Both of my other ones you could separate the screen and the keyboard for a little gap that annoyed the hell out of me. My current one is seriously rock solid!
So from my experience I'd definitely say go for it and try to get a new one. I was doubting if the epic was right for me, but my latest one changed my mind completely!
No not the actual glass but the whole top half of the phone that slides out.
But yea I see a lot of people saying their newew ones are more solid so that's good.

My wife and I just got ours last month and we have had no problems with ours. We love em. You shouldn't have a problem with a new order, but you never know.
Sent from my shoe, I mean....Epic shoe... I mean Samsung Epic!
I've had mine since the first week, and yes, its loose, but only as much as any other slider I've had. I don't think it has gotten any "worse"... I had a cheapo 2 pc. Best buy hard case on it, and with that it was perfectly solid. The 'action' of the slide, the spring assist of it, is just as good as new too. If yours is that horrible, take it back for sure... I just accept that sliders do that, as long as it doesn't butt-dial from slight opening, I'm ok.
The first one I got on launch day had separation of the glass to the frame. Made clicking noises after I turned off all the clicks and hapatic feedback ****. The 2nd and 3rd Epic's I had, have been rock solid.
i got my epic in october and since then its loose now i guess its normal from normal use because its a slider...my cousin got his last month and his is loose too now.
I got myne on release day and have no problems at all mybe jus a little loose keyboard but I don't use it much so I don't care

The issue of loose or wobbly screens is a known one. I have had to replace my Epic twice due to that reason. So, when I was getting the one I have now, I asked the sales rep. to let me check if the screen was wobbly or not, before he activated it. When you pay so much for such devices, there shouldn't be any margin for imperfection. You should get your phone replaced.
I'm not rooted yet, we're only two days old at this point, but this is bugging me. I wish there were a "calibrate trackpad" option.
most of the time, I can go left and right, but going up and down in portrait is a crapshoot (in landscape I can go up-down but not left-right), and jumpy at best.
anyone have a quick fix? or since a search came back with unrelated threads, do I have a defective device?
My trackpad works fine except for it being light sensitive
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Try it in a different area if you always use it in the same place. As the previous poster said, it's light sensitive and it appears some have problems with that aspect of it.
But it's odd it works one way and not the other. The only problem I have with mine is if I make too much of a stroke in the up/down direction in portrait, then I end up accidentally activating the menu button. I find that a bit irritating but I'm changing how I use it to stop doing that.
Could just be a faulty trackpad.

thanks for the response, both of you.
I'll spend some more time playing with it- perhaps this is a case of user error. if it doesn't get better, I'll call TMo.
I had the same problem with my 1st G2. Called up T-Mobile and they told me it was a problem with the hardware. I returned it and I didn't have a problem whatsoever with it, I even came out with a sturdier hinge. Only problem with that was that it had a bed LED on the keyboard, so I had to return that one too. On my third one now and no real complaints.
I'll give them a call on Monday if I can't figure it out. I don't expect my G2 to be absolutely perfect, but this is clearly an issue.
Did they send you the replacement first, or did you have to be without a phone?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I was still within my buyer's remorse for all my returns.
However, I have returned phones through T-Mobile's warranty and they always send you the replacement 1st, then you return your defective handset in the same box that your replacement was sent in.

good to know. thanks for the info.
that was something ridiculous... I called TMo and was transferred to tech support- she had me do a wipe/reset to see if it was a software issue, and said she had to do that before transferring me to CS to get a replacement.
thank god for Visionary and Titanium...
new G2 will arrive in a few days, hopefully with a working trackpad and no echo/delay in calls. (this is another reason why I waited to root)
wow.. the replacement arrived today, and I def had a defective device. the hinge is much tighter and the trackpad is awesome. echo in calls is gone as well.
would a wonky trackpad make my wifes DZ move between homescreens on its own and make it difficult to type?
The cursor when typing moves on the screen so sometimes she'll be typing a word and half of it gets inserted into a previous word...
I have a NST with glowlight and i have touch issues quite often... when using the keyboard when i touch backspace it touches "h".. when i touch space .. it touches b ... does anyone have these screen issues? it's like phantom touches.. i takes me 5mins to type something
This is a known issue. I just received mine in the mail and it had issues. I found you can clean it and it may help. But for me, since it is brand new, I just had them ship out a new one. If you are not under warranty, I actually just did a factory restore and it stemmed to have helped a bit.

Nook touch screens use infra-red sensors/emitters located around the edges of the screen. If the transparent plastic sandwiched between the screen and the bezel gets dusty, it can cause problems.

so it's not really a hardware fault but it's because of dirt?? any cover case that can protect against such scenarios? how do i clean it?
I think there are two scenarios (perhaps more). Faulty hardware in which the infra red sensors do not function correctly or dirt/ dust impeding their ability to function. One always hopes for the latter.
The reset I did only helped for about an hour.
First try to clean it.
Since you got it off eBay, start by contacting the seller. Ask the person if it is still under warranty.
Then, contact 1800thebook to get a replacement. If it is not under warranty, I am not sure what your options are. EBay and electronics is always a gamble. Sorry.

ok thx,... i have tried cleaning it up but it helps for a few seconds but then it gets freaky at times.. it's a pain to type! do you guys ever take notes with it??? it's impossible...
i don't think it's a hardware issue since the first 2 weeks it works with no problems... i was keeping it in the box while not in use... since i started not keeping it in its box.. i am getting these touch issues... so seems related to dust...
will i need to send back my nook to get a replacement... sounds pretty annoying to do so.. shipping is damn expensive
sidenote: looking at the edge of the nook, i see shiny particles... is this normal or is this dust?
i can't even type my wifi password anymore... every button i touch also "ghost" touch the corresponding middle button.. e.g. when i press d, i get dg ... how do i clean that damn thing? where do i need to clean exactly?? i am cleaning the edge.. does not seem to work.. sometimes it seems ok, then 2 secs later it gets messed up again
Cleaning the screen is a different reason to normal screens. Normally you just want the greasy finger prints off etc. However thats for a resistive or capacitve based touchscreen. NST/NSTG touchscreen works on an infrared array running along the edges ABOVE the screen rather than a stuck on touchscreen so as not to affect the contrast in sunlight.
This means a piece of particulate matter on the screen will affect the touch sensor.
If its confused sometimes it won't work at all! The worst environment to ever take your NST is to a sandy beach, really don't do it.
Personally I use a air duster (compressed air can) to get those pesky bits out of the edges.
When not using NST keep face down to keep out bits of crap or keep in a case..
