Palm touchstone mod - Droid Incredible General

I've been wanting to do this for a while and just recently I purchased a pixi touchstone back and a touchstone, I read the evo step by step instructions so I took apart my incredible and found the two motherboards to be very different.
Does anybody have any idea how to hook up the inductive coil to the incredible

I'd just Google around until you can find a labeled diagram of the motherboard.
The negative point should be really easy to find, but good luck with the positive.

I'd imagine it's somewhere near the micro USB port and vibrator like the EVO.

Galaxy Note Inductive Charging Mod

I modified my Galaxy Note to use inductive charging via a palm touchstone / patch.
Just a quick note. Not a whole lot to contribute here, because I largely followed the examples of the Qian Qi. That guy is awesome.
I don't think I voided a warranty, either. Only minimal teardown required (black plastic back, then the speaker section). Never came across a sticker I had to remove....

Notes:
- Buy a good soldering iron. Weller WESD51, set to 610 deg F, with 1/32" long conical tip, with lots of flux and lots of flux remover are the only reason I could do this. I can't stress enough the value of having good temperature control, knowledge of temperature, and so forth. I stumbled around with an "ordinary" soldering iron for a long time, and in hindsite, I can't believe I did so.
- Do not choke on the price. I already had a lot of soldering gear, and I bought $220 more. Spend the money. It's worth it.
- Watch the curious inventor youtube videos on soldering. This guy. Watch everything, several times. http://store.curiousinventor.com/
- You want 30 gauge wire. It's the only thing that just barely can be crammed in. I used the "Kynar" coated type. Buy at least 2 colors.
- as you look at the phone disassembled, with speaker on the bottom left, the +5 pin on the micro usb (MHL) port is the leftmost. I attached a wire to that, and a ground wire to the housing where the port was soldered.
- routed the wires under the speaker, then back, then into a VERY slight indentation into the battery compartment. used a blue "safe open" tool to help shape the wire / crimp ends. Once in the battery compartment, you're golden. Attach the inductive charging coil to the back of the samsung plastic back, add solder to the pads, and attach the wires.
- Attached is a picture with roughly how I routed wires. Red is +5V, Blue is ground. Be sure and double check if my recollection is right where the indentation is into the battery compartment. (that part is by memory).
- dont leave too much slack. it's really hard to get the samsung black pastic panel back on. Mine very slightly bulges.
- be careful where you put the charging sticky patch, because this phone is a little bit bigger than a palm pre. You have to consider if the phone can sit on the charger and "lock in" with the magnets. If you place it too high, it actually can't (in portrait)!
- Qian Qi had a really interesting point: most articles about how Li-ion batteries behave are wrong, and fully discharging the battery drastically reduces the number of cycles you have. So this is actually a very useful mod--whenever you don't use the phone, toss it on the charger.
Thanks for summing it up! Was actually thinking of doing this mod myself. Question: do you have a protective case on your Note? If so - what kind and how badly does it affect the magnetic properties?
No case. Especially because the note is so big, I think it would be unmanageable.
I took the samsung thin plastic back, and placed the Palm PRE (with charging coil still attached) on top of it, on the touchstone -- to figure out proper placement & mark with a pencil. I noticed a buzzing sound, coming from (I think) the induction coil on the palm pre back itself. I suspect if you use a case, this wont work well.
Also, the size/weight/placement of the galaxy note are such that the magnets are just barely strong enough to hold it. One time my phone was near, but off, the charger. I'm not sure if vibration from the phone did that, or my kids
In summary, I'm not sure how well it would work with a case. You might be able to research this on the net; among the 15 or 20 people that have bought a Pre, you might be able to find some info about the effect of a case on inductive charging.

im wanting to try this mod i have my touchstone on the way not thank you amazon but it seems like to me that the pad from the pre wouldnt fit under the cover of our phablet =/ could you post pics of the finished product and i think this is the only instance that i have seen someone attempt this with the note and i want to try it i love my note but would love it even more with inductive charging.

Thank you so much for your post I have my materials on the way but I hadn't seen a detailed guide for the note other than this one and was worried I would have to solder directly to the usb pins which looked scary lol I did have two questions though would your mod work the same way for the at&t note? Specifically the points where you soldered to the phone and can wireless charging be performed through a case?
Hey, OP here. You may want to hold off just a bit. Mine is exhibiting some issues now. As in, it says "charging" but it doesn't do so wirelessly. The phone will stay "charging" but the battery % never goes up. (It was slow before, but would charge fully over a night).
Charging via USB still works.
It may be something simple; I'm not sure. But I need to crack it open and take a peek, and I haven't had time to do that yet because my phone is functional at the moment.
If nothing has conspicuously changed, there may be something about the design that isn't sustainable. Or maybe my solder joint halfway broke, or one of the wires got smashed enough so that it's partially broken...
I'll write back with my findings. Bug me if I don't

No prob I just wanted to see if i could do it and if I can do it with little soldering experience I'm sure most could do it I haven't done this mod to my galaxy note though as there is way less room in its a far more complicated mod than the evo because you have to make room for wires in a device samsung made as thin as possible and the way you have to route the wires I feel like the solder joints would just break

For those who want to try this out but still have warrantee just buy a backcover, a micro usb plug and assemble it according to the directions here.If you need the note just take out the usb plug and the back cover and you're good to go.... Or leave it there.....
For those who don't know what pins to use on the usb plug:
Pin: 1 is 5V+ (red)
Pin: 5 is GND (black)
Works like a charm.......

yes it affects the stylus sometimes it reacts with delay and sometimes it clicks although only hovers over it

I was not a big stylus user; I can't stand the input lag. I didn't notice a difference, but I always considered the input speed unacceptable. Not sure why there would be any difference, anyway.
My big problem that I've never taken the time to address is that after some time, it's as though I can't pull enough current through the wires to charge. One day I need to crack this open & figure out why.

It is slower than normal, but completed in a night. I still have not dismantled my phone to attempt to repair this, but I want to soon

PowerMat induction charging door for HD2 $6 at Amazon

Has anyone tried using a PowerMat Droid X induction charger on the HD2? It has a microUSB plug tethered to the induction battery door, so it looks like it can go on any device with microUSB charging ports, as long as you velcro the Droid X battery door to your device, and cut off the extraneous edges off that door.

I ended up buying a power mat before seeing your link about people having issues getting their phone to work properly. Unfortunately I too am unable to charge my phone. The lights come on the mat, I hear the "shake" sound I think they call it but it just won't charge. Has anyone got this to work on their phone after it wouldn't?

IT WORKS !!!!!
After many months of agony the micro USB port of my HD2 died a month ago. Thanks to llofthou and powermat my HD2 is fully charged.
For those who could benefit from this experience here is how i proceeded and it was quite easy.
First i bought a powermat cover...and unfortunately the serial is long past the limit...
Because i did not want to open it the normal way (i thought i woul never manage to put the screen in place) I Just used a dremel grinder to cut the plastic and metal behind the sim card (easier than i thought). see iloftou's drawing for more info. I arrived directly on the thing to solder. OK it's small but not that small, i took my Hd2 to the electronic shop by the corner and he did the soldering in 5 min. Seems it wasn't a big problem for him..

Inductive charging / wireless charging?

Hi all does the note 2 support inductive charging or do you have to replace the back? Its just I notice there is something in the back cover and i hear this is NFC for payments I was just wondering if it was also capable of inductive charging out of the box or if it has to be adapted in some way.

im going to guess that there having troubles as the s3 wireless kit was supposed to be september and is as of yet a no show

Out of the box it does not support wireless charging. I suspect it could be modified to use a Palm inductive charger though. I've been messing with my Note 2 and a Palm Pre inductive charger for the last half hour or so. The PCB of the Pre back cover fits into the little groove next to the micro SD slot (I had to cut a small part of the PCB off - see the red circle in the last image) and the coil/magnet cluster fits very easily between the back cover and the battery. Visually/tactilely it's pretty much impossible to detect when they've been put in there.
Unfortunately, I've never modded a device to use inductive charging before so I'm a little hesitant to proceed.

i would rather not to do it, i think note 2 is the ame as Galaxy s3, they have the capability you just need to wait for the battery cover replacement sold. or you can take buy one fro S3 and rip out whatever in that back cover (coil) put it in your note 2 back cover. http://www.androidauthority.com/wir...samsung-galaxy-s3-hits-verizon-stores-105433/

Former Palmer/webOS user here. Actually, toying with the inductive back of Palm Pre & Touchstone charger, is not that risky nor difficult, not at all. I've tested it as a kind of proof of concept, with my SGS 2 - just put the coils/PCB assembly at the back of phone cover, and soldered two wires to the coils's output contacts. These two wires, I just ran to the micro USB plug. When I've connected that plug to the phone's micro USB port and put the phone on the Touchstone charger, it starts charging - that's all. Coil's integrated PCB sorts out things like converting AC/induction back to DC, 5V etc. What you are getting out of it, is your pure, standard, USB-compatible juice.
The only reason why I wasn't using it permanently, was that I didn't wan't to solder anything on my SGS 2's PCB (didn't feel like it is a smart idea, with it's tiny tracks and my soldering skills - or rather the lack of thereof). And having micro USB plug stuck in phone's bottom all the time, didn't appeal to me, somehow
But if the SGS3/Note2 already had the required contacts behind it's back cover, it will be a breeze DIY project. And one damn handy and cool-loking charger on your desk, believe me.
I'll try to post some photos of my POC setup later on.

I purchased a couple of kits - one was just the inductive charging module for the phone, which I installed and separately picked up a couple of charging bases; the other one was a complete kit.
This kit (not by this seller, but the photo is the same as the kit I purchased) is very elegant, thin, and easy to install. You can barely see the bulge in the back of the case. The only problem I have is that the magnets seem to be slightly too weak so the position is a bit inexact. I've added a couple of extra magnets but will end up replacing the originals with my slightly-stronger replacements in the end I suspect. Overall this kit, although expensive on Ebay does the job and looks good.
This charging module was easy to install but the one I received had the polarity of the charging pins reversed so I had to make a modification to get it working. Here is a post of my preliminary mod to get it working; since that post I've done some clean-up but the one linked above thinner so I'm using it as my primary right now.

Is a wireless charging mod for the AT&T / T-Mobile LG G2 feasible? My musings...

I've been mulling this over, and here is where I'm at so far...
Can we develop a relatively easy / straight forward wireless charging mod for the LG G2, similar to what has been done for the Samsung Galaxy S3/4 and Note 2?
At first it doesn't seem that likely, as there's not much space behind the cover of the G2, and not being designed to be removable, is relatively hard to get off. Maybe not that hard though. Some looking around here at XDA shows several people who have removed their back covers to rough them up and get rid of the shiny plastic / tendency to collect fingerprints, so it seems taking it off / putting it back on without damaging the phone is quite possible.
The main thing then is finding a coil / receiver setup thin enough that it won't cause bulging or fitment issues, which may not be possible while retaining the "stock" back.
I suspect we may be able to get around this by using a "snap on" style hard case and some padding to maintain the over all look of the phone, effectively mounting the coil in the resulting gap where the back cover once was. This isn't my idea originally -- I've seen several people do this when using exceptionally thick aftermarket cases for the Galaxy S3, where they either removed the stock back of the phone entirely or built the Palm charging coil in to the back of the case The main issue with this sort of setup would be the area around the buttons / camera lens as it would have a space there and likely collect dust and dirt / be more likely to get damaged. If the stock back becomes available (like via ebay, say) relatively cheaply I could see some people buying a spare and modifying it relatively easy to cover this problem area, we're talking about a thin piece of plastic after all.
The only remaining issue would be getting the coil connected, then. I have yet to open the AT&T version or see a picture of one opened (all the pictures I've seen thus far have been the VZW version with the wireless charging built in) but as I understand the AT&T and T-Mobile versions likely don't include the pogo pins used to connect the charging coil for the VZW version, so we'd have to find somewhere else to connect, likely to the charging pins of the USB port as has been done for other wireless charging mods with earlier phones.
All in all this probably won't be a common mod (we're likely in solid "warranty voiding / can't easily be reversed" territory here) but I don't see any definite reason so far why it wouldn't be doable.
Would anyone else (ideally someone with more "involved" hardware modding experience -- I've just done the Palm Touchstone mod in a few Samsung GS3s) like to chime in here? Suggestions?

I have an Optimus G Pro, but a family member got a G2 as a gift. I have Qi, but they don't (T-Mo version). I'd be interested in helping out; just not sure they'd let me open theirs up. Are you sure it lacks the pogo pins? And, additionally, for Qi, could the patch in the G Pro be potentially helpful?
I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more momentum...

You can compare the pins in these pictures. Notice the extra 2 contacts by the NFC contacts on the Verizon version.

Here we have the same LG G2 and you get wireless charging on one and not on the others. You have to buy the flip case for them based on your carrier. It's rather retarded if you ask me. They should all have the wireless charging.

OP, to you answer your question, this isn't possible. I run an android parts shop and we have torn down a D801, D802 and a VS980. I have a D802 myself and wanted the wireless charging ability. My technician said it wasn't possible, the wireless charging module from the VS980 has no place to connect to on a D80x board.

The best solution I think would be to solder the coil straight to the USB charging lines, but if that isn't possible I guess you could connect the coil to a USB plug and then just connect the plug on the USB port and leave it there all the time (you'd only need to remove it when you connect the phone to the PC). You would need to find a rather small USB head (ideally one with a 90 degree angle) so it doesn't get in the way.

I actually did this recently to my Verizon Galaxy Nexus. I used a Note 2 Qi Receiver pad. I took my soldering iron and melted plastic casing away to expose 5V and GND where I soldered 2 beads for connection. I then fitted the Qi Pad over the beads and adjusted for a good connection. Added Double Sided tape and applied my Incipio Feather Case. When I removed the case, the double sided tape kept the Qi Pad on the case, where I permanently installed it.
I have the actual back plate cut in half to keep the camera whole sealed, but the battery and Qi pad is exposed. I basically built myself a Qi Charging Case. Remove the case and replace the back cover with a whole one, and it's gone.
Wireless Charging WAS a requirement for my next phone and luckily only the Verizon variant had it. I saw it as fate.
But conclusion is that just because the internal case doesn't have charging leads available, doesn't mean you can't make it happen. To pour salt in the wound, the Qi Charging works fantastic on the VZW model. I use it every day.
I really hope something comes up with this. I've got the ATT D800 and came from a Nokia Lumia 920 with Qi. I still have the Nokia charger and would LOVE to go back to it. I know some people say it's not important, but those are people who have not tried it yet.

My Lumia had flawless GPS and Wireless Charging. It can be done. I may break open my G2 and look around a bit...

My post was specific to the G2. There is obviously no causal link between wireless charging tech in general and spotty GPS reception but it seems to be the case here. Anecdotally, it somehow has an affect on the VZW model's ability to acquire and maintain a lock.

I hadn't read that yet. Sounds like they put the charging coil too close to the GPS antenna.

They're reasonable cheap so I figured I'd try it out and see how it performs. Not going to solder as of now though

I have no problem with the GPS on Verizon... Acquire locks very fast as well.

My question, though, is what the circuits look like on the back side of the board. It might still have the wiring, just no holes/connector

I can't speak definitively, but from my experience the traces for those connections are on the same side as they're surface mounted.
I suppose not possible then....?

Wireless charging, a new concept (DNA transplant)

The lack of wireless charging was a huge downside to me, a trivial thing I know, but I used the hell out of it on my DNA.
The M8 metal case causes a problem for wireless charging, so the concept I have is as follows:
1. Using a 3d scanner/printer design and print a plastic back
2. Transplant DNA wireless charging to M8
Number 1 is easy, I have access to the materials
Number 2, questionable:
Is the DNA's wireless charger connected to a battery or in some way to the motherboard? I cannot find any information on this that would give me a green light to start the project. Any input form anyone knowledgeable in the area will be appreciated.
Haven't people been using the receiver under a case that connects to charge port with a flat right angle connector?

They have, however for me its not an option (I'm too ocd for that lol, and often carry my phone without a case). I am after a built in solution that will leave the USB port open.

It appears, after looking at wireless charging on the DNA and several other phones, it actually goes through the motherboard itself, so a transplant is a no go.
2nd thought: tapping into the usb port, splicing the wireless receiver directly to it.
Wireless charging, a new concept (DNA transplant) is very interesting and unique.
When i read title of thread i really surprise about it but now i get some information about it.
