Basically whats happening. Me and my wife have exchanged both of our Vibrants through T-Mobile 3 times due to overheating and the proximity sensor acting up. My wife literally burned her hand this morning when she grabbed her vibrant off of the charger. We only replaced the phones yesterday and are already getting the same issue. I called T-Mobile and they said they can either give me another Vibrant or exchange my phone for the original Motorola Cliq or the Blackberry 9700. When I was with AT&T they gave us the option to select another phone within the same price bracket of what our phones were worth. I paid full price for both vibrants. Do I have any options or should I work through the BBB to solve this?
Tell t-mobile that you are ready to file with the BBB, see what they do, if it comes to the worst, actually file a claim or complaint and hope for the best. Good luck mate !
you need to get out of 1st line support. You can easily get the email address to the executives of Tmobile easily. And write them a professional email stating your case and you will be taken care of.
My brother did this a few times to get out of contracts, to get a free phone and to get out of a ETF. It is effective.
So you're saying that all SIX of the Vibrants you've owned have had the same issues? Either you are the unluckiest people to walk the Earth, or your expectations are beyond reason.

I mean, LITERALLY burnt her hand? That's lawsuit worthy if you have hospital bills bud. I think you're overreacting, get a battery app and see how hot its getting. It should only get abnormally hot under heavy use while charging, like tethering or something. I mean, 6 vibrants? You expect them to keep sending them to you on demand? Obviously they're trying to stop you having to exchange your phone so often, not screw you over. But yes, use one of the above methods.
Crazy thought, but maybe it is the batteries and not the phones?? How about Tmobile replaces both batteries?

My thoughts exactly, especially since this is not a known problem with the phones. In fact this is the first time I think I've ever heard of it happening with the galaxy S line in general.
Actually it takes a fair amount of heat to damage tissue. I expect that plastic would be melting around that point.

the only time ive heard of anything like this is with cheap chinese knock off batteries. did you buy a pair of high cap batteries and a charging station on ebay or something? If so consider putting stock batteries back in cause every replacement you get is a manufacturer refurb meaning they have been fixed and tesed to be running. I have 4 Vibrants on my T-Mo plan and none have had any issues, minus the first set being hardware locked but that was a long time ago.

I actually had this happen Saturday, my story is that the wife was doing the updates and things, it froze as usual so instead of messing with it then, I told her to put it on charge and let it go (We didnt have time to screw with it then). Later on, she took it off charge, it burned her hand and she dropped the phone (Not really burned, but more of a shock it was so hot). The screen cracked, I called tmo and was told in a rude way that it was samsung's problem, not theirs and that they didn't care. I had to do a warranty exchange on it due to it being damaged at that point.. I told them it wouldn't have been damaged had it not been so hot.. blah blah, again, it was like talking to the wall.
I like to trust people on here, but when i hear SIX phones have the same problem.... I know it is NOT the phone.

A friend of mine experienced this but it was not due to the phone but the fact he was using some non-OEM extended batteries that were overheating instead. Once he went back to using OEM battery, it's been fine ever since.
The only reason he went with the extended battery is because of the unsatisfactory battery life. After getting him setup on Bionix and reconditioning his battery, he's no longer complaining about battery life.
If this is case with the OP, I actually feel sorry for TMO / Samsung. So much waste in hardware, time, etc.

That's reminds me...
I've seen "crappy" chargers that don't seem to stop charging after the phone is at 100%. So, it just keeps charging until unplugged. That can't be good...
I've also seen so-called generic micro-usb "quick chargers" that claim to charge the battery up to 50% faster. Even if it's not a "crappy" charger I imagine doing so might make the battery unnecessarily hot as result of the increased speed of the charge.

The fact is that it wasnt abnormally hot. it just surprised his wife. I've touched cold things and twitched because I thought they were hot.
Yes the battery/charger may be the problem
I have had this problem on my HD2 But..... it was a result of an aftermarket battery. The probability of 6 phones having the same internal problem....is like winning the lottery, so I'd be looking to the charger and battery as the issue.
FYI, for temperature reference hot water in commercial building is usually set @ 112-120 f unless it is a building for kids then set @ 108 max. At 120 to get a real 2nd degree burn you would need your hand in it for 15-30 sec. depending on the person.
Most plastics we use in building phones, electronics and consumer goods range resisting deformation until 150-180 degrees but with a protracted long heat source can become malleable 125degree depending on the plastic.
Anyway some trivia for reference. I'd would look to the battery
My first phone died due to overheating. But this was from using a car charger that was not meant for the exact phone model.
I picked up a $0.98 charger from amazon and no more overheating issues when charging in my car. When you charge with the wrong charger it will heat near 120 degrees.

So I think that my HTC Wizard's battery is about to go.
When I look at it, it feels a little swollen. I think that it was flat when I first got it, but honestly, how many of us actually need to look at the battery that often? Got it about five months ago, and it was refurbished at the time.
Another thing that seems to indicate that the battery is dying is that when I'm playing a game like Spb Quadronica or Skyforce Reloaded, the battery level takes a deep dive (like 30 - 40%) after about 30 minutes of playing. These battery levels are from Spb Mobile Shell since I removed the T-Mobile application from startup that shows an icon in the system tray.
When I first got this, I was able to play Skyforce Reloaded for probably two hours before it reaches the same drainage. The battery looks like it was also refurbished since the black metallic coating was coming off on the end opposite of the battery contacts.
When it's at some inexplicable power level like 24% after playing for a short time, I restart the device (sometimes it does this automatically without warning) and it's back to like 78%, which is more or less what it should be at for that length of usage.
On a seemingly random restart, it will be stuck in a restart cycle going from the T-Mobile splash screen to the Windows Mobile boot screen and then restarting before it makes it to the Password window.
I try to use the same techniques when taking care of my battery as I do for lithium ions in laptops, such as power cycling (complete drain and full recharge) once or twice a month.
Should I be worried about the battery? Should I just get a new one since they're not that expensive? Is there something else that might be causing this?

you should replace it. a battery gets swollen if the heat boils the chemicals inside it. that happens due to inequality in material density (which is caused by other electrical issues). if you keep using it it might pop if it heats up too much and spill all over your phone.
The battery is a goner,replace it immediately,before it leaks or bursts and create further mess.Yes! one more thing,don't buy a refurbished batteries,as you can never be sure about the condition of the battery,spend a little more and get a new and warranted,it'll save further complications and expenses.

So I'm a little wary about using them to buy a battery online. Pretty good price though.

I do not know where you are at, but in america you can go to any batteries plus and they have the battery for the wizard. I recently replaced mine with a new one. I think it was about 30 or 40 dollars. Not bad considering that I use it alot. here is a link to their website.

First some backgound.
In preparation for a big event where I will be using my phone for web surfing a lot, I pick up the huge brick2600mah battery. It works well and last all day. I forgot my charger and had to charge the phone over USB and that only seems to charge the battery to 75%. But that is a different issue.
So when I get home, I put back in the stock battery so the phone will no longer be a brick in my picket any more. (The 2600mah battery will be used for events where I need the power)
But the stock battery is not lasting very long at all any more. The capacity seems to be down 50%. I left it in my truck once and came back to find it almost dead. It went from fully charged with the car charger to dead in 2 hours.
A week or so later, in the same spot, I knew I was going to be out of ear shot, so I left my fully charged phone, in airplane mode to save the battery. 4 hours later and it's dead like a door nail.
I have since done the same and the battery is low after 6 hours, but not dead. Something strange is going on. I have ran the phone till dead 3 times and fully charged it and that seemed to help, but it's still not happy. It also takes 8+ hours to charge.
A few hours ago, I managed to hard lock the phone, so I pop out the battery. The battery swollen. Not Sony like, but like something inside is really pressing hard against the case and wants to get out. Note I am talking about the stock HTC battery, not the brick.
My stock battery problems may be unrelated to the use of the 2600 brick battery, but I figure it's worth bringing up.
Anyone else seen this? Can I bug T-Mobile about getting a new battery?
Any suggestions next to bury it in a hole before it explodes and kills us all?
If the stock as really swollen, you'd better contact Tmo and get a replacement. I think it might got over heated when you left it in the truck. Did you put it on the dashboard? Was that a hot sunny day? Any temperature above 60 degrees Celsius can cause permanent damage to lithium-ion batteries. Crystals growing on one of the electrodes (can't remember which) can penetrate the insulation and touch the other side, causing a internal short. This will heat the liquids inside the battery and when the pressure rise beyond control...
You need a new battery, batteries can swell like that either from heat or too high current drained. Might be a defect in the battery from the start as well tho (short-circuit waiting to happen or something, who knows?)

Any lithium battery that experiences swelling should immediately be viewed as a potential hazard. At this point you cannot drop it off in a battery recycling drop-off point (and perish the thought of just tossing it in the trash). I recommend you take it to a T-Mo store and demand an exchange for a new battery. You'll also be relieved of the responsibility to deal with disposing of it properly.

But I miscalculated the position of the sun and when I checked back in a few hours, it was not in direct sunlight and hot. Not too hot to handle, but toasty. Only happened once, but I guess that sure could be the cause.
The battery is not hot now or bursting out of it's case, and I have been using it for 2 months so I don't think it will be an issue recycling it. Is a T-Mobile store just going to hand over a new battery to me?

Even if it's not in direct sunlight, the temp inside of a car on a sunny day can easily go over 200 degrees F... in many cases going up to 300 degrees.

As said 100% correctly by jashsu, your battery is basically hazardous. Keep it away from anything you want to stay alive (you, your property, your G1...) until you can get it to T-Mobile.
XDA does not condone this, but your best bet to get a new battery is to lie. If you tell them you left it in the sun, they're most likely not going to replace it. Play dumb and tell them nothing odd happened and you have no idea why it did it.
If you bought it from em and are still in contract with them, I'd be pretty shocked if they didn't replace it on the spot (even if you don't have warranty). Until then, do NOT use the battery, and be thankful that it didn't destroy your G1.

I have been still using the phone. Bloated battery and on. It has not tried to kill me as of yet.
Today I went down to the t-mobile store and told the guy at the counter that my phone was only holding a charge for 5 hours at most. He suggested a battery swap and if that does not fix it, a phone swap. I handed him my puffed out battery, and he handed me a new, slimmer one. He never asked for my phone, my number, or nothing else. Once again I am reminded why I go with the only carrier that does not offer 3G service in my area. T-Mobile service rocks.
I am new here but just wanted to know if anyone else has had issues with their Samsung Vibrant overheating???? I have had this phone for less than 2 months from my carrier and now it is dead and in for repair!! I went to go grab the phone and the screen did not come on; however, the buttons at the bottom were lit up so i tried the buttons on the side of the phone (on/off switch) still nothing. The top half of my phone (not where the battery is) got so hot that it burnt my hand. Then I noticed blue, red, green pixel stars on the screen (which by the way burnt the screen). I don't know if it is a faulty battery/charger? Or what. When I spoke to my carrier, they told me that this is the first they have heard about anything like my case. It has been in the shop for more than 1 month now and I am getting very annoyed..as they gave me a loaner Galaxy to use and I HATE IT!!! Anyone have any suggestions??? I did not game on this phone or anything...

Happened to an HTC Aria I had, and had to get a new replacement to AT&T. The digitizer went (burnt?) out, and since it's a touchscreen only phone it became unusable because I couldn't really do anything on it.
What kind of charger did you use? Especially car charger...
I have never had it on with a car charger. I have heard that one should put the phone on plane mode as the green charge battery light will not come on. From what I hear they are replacing the screen (which they have no choice as it is burnt) as well as the board. Why is it taking soooooooooooo long? I usually have it on WiFi all the time; however, this should not do anything. It makes me mad....I have waited for this phone to come out and when I got it, I thought there was no other...until this happened. I did notice it acting kinda slow and I realize some phones do get warm...but should NEVER get hot enough to burn one's hand!!!!

Yea, I keep mine on WiFi basically 80% of the time, but the phone (in stock form) turns that off when the phone sleeps. I have brightness set to auto.
I notice my phone gets very hot when I have it on a car charger, and I'm using a charger from T-Mobile. It doesn't happen when I have it charging from an outlet in the wall through a USB Extended cable.
That's the only time I notice my phone getting hot.
Also, using the phone on WiFi tends to keep the phone cooler than using it on a data connection - I've noticed that for a few phones I've owned.
The overheating issue was also a big problem with HTC HD2s (except those phones would just go into a reboot loop/lock up, instead of burning up ).
No I did not overcharge the phone; however, I do notice that the battery life is almost nil on this phone. Full charge does not last 2 long on the phone and I only use it basically to text my daughters...and a little texam holden lol. But I have noticed with this galaxy (the loaner phone) the battery stays good for 2 - 3 days! Although I really hate this phone so I do not use that much! How would they be able to tell if it is the battery?? From what they have told me, they are only replacing the screen and the board....Well something made it go hot!! Battery or charger...When I took the phone back to Aliant I was going to give them everything including the charger, but they just sent it away with the battery. How do they know it was not the charger?? Getting very frustrated....I have always owned a Samsung phone and have never had any issues until this phone....makes me want to go back....but I do like the Vibrant when it was working....esp the screen.....
Only things I've ever come across that have made a Vibrant overheat is using cheap non-oem extended batteries, overclocking the CPU / GPU or leaving it a car in a 120+ climate then expecting to make heavy of use it without allowing it to cool down first.
I have never replaced the battery...it is brand new (less than 2 months old)....Thank god I had insurance on it... One would think that it would not take this long to come back from being fixed!!! Have never left in car....don't have to worry about the 120 degrees we are INTO snow now!! LOL... I am disappointed with Samsung. How can they tell what made it go that way?? Battery? Home Charger? They should replace the battery in my opinion as well!!

not sure.....it only took one time for me that fried the phone...Now they are supposedly replacing the screenh (they have to it burnt an image on it) as well as the board.

I thought perhaps it was the WiFi being on all the time, but I do not think this is why. Both times the phone was only warm to the touch. Nothing like you've described.
So do you have T-Mobile or Bell? If you have Bell (sounds like you do, I'm 99% positive) this is limited to the Bell i9000m Vibrant and not the T-Mobile T959 Vibrant.

There are threas on T-Mobile's official Vibrant forum about this issue.
My vibrant gets very very hot from time to time. I keep it on a usb hooked up to my computer at work with wifi on all day. Sometimes it will get super hot and not want to charge. I restart the phone and it usually fixes the problem. But its not the battery that gets hot, its for sure the yup part of the phone.

Sounds to me like you had a bad battery...this can cause the battery to overheat while charging. I work in construction and when the batteries on my power tools fail you can cook an egg on them when they are charging.

Did u happen to have anytype of case on your vibrant. I notuced when I charge my phone with the case on it got prety hot. Not to where it would burn my hand, but hotter than I really thought my phone should be while charging. So I take the case off when I put it on the charger.

Ok, recently I've been having freezing problems constantly and I found out that is was my old sim card that was causing the most problem with that deal. I got a new sim and it is working much better, but still has some freezes but not as much as before. I can conclude that my HD2 has always run hot, but now that I got a new sim it doesn't run as hot but I think the heat sensor is faulty as it barely gets hot but freezes my phone anyways. I got to thinking is there anyway we can either disable or bypass the heat sensor on our HD2 software wise or even hardware wise? So I google searched and stumbled on to this:

Often these batteries do not have any fuses or security stuff in them because they just want to produce a cheap product.
It sucks for that guy that his phone exploded and caught fire...glad he's okay.
But the important thing is, anyone else catch those baby blue bed sheets with the bugs on them? Priceless!
i think a lot of the dead touch input problems are related to the phone getting hot,
I recently bought a replacement hd2, cos mine, tho it worked fine, had a cracked screen. I started using my old hd2 just to charge the extra battery i now had, swapping out the batteries once or twice a day, so the old phone, tho it wasn't being used, was plugged in to wall charger most of the time, and within a few days (a week, tops) the screen has gone. No touch input at all. 18 months without a glitch, and bang, gone. So glad i pre-emptively replaced it!
Is it possible for HTC to issue a recall for HD2 owners? Just like Apple did a recall recently with their really old iPod Nano for a new one.

That sucks, haha. My battery runs at 31-36 degrees, its quite hot, but I'm not that worried at it running at that heat, don't think it'll catch fire.

I'm afraid you are right，many batteries made in China with that huge a storage is fake and useless. There is a highly risk that it might blow your phone when they got too hot.
Never let your HD2 get too warm, my last one broke because of that.
Exploding fireball HD2s aside...has anyone ever thought of how to disable the heat sensor? Maybe something fun to do on an HD2. That'd be cool!
Having just come off the phone to my Network, I'm worried about my choice of Nexus 4. My first one I have had less than a week and this morning the back glass went ping whilst it was sitting on the sofa doing nothing, the entire back just shattered all on its own.
The Network operator advised there are issues with leaving the phone on charge for long periods and the battery overheating causing the glass to shatter. I was offered an alternate phone, but I actually like the Nexus so am giving it another go. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?
I'm used to charging my phone overnight whilst in bed as I don't feel this is excessive over charging????

It's the heat, do you live in a child country, or keep the ac low? Since the glass is thick, the temperature gradient between the two sides causes expansion like in a bi metallic strip, causing it to bend, and eventually crack as strain goes beyond the critical point of elasticity. 11th grade physics

No such thing as all modern phones/batteries have circuitry built in to prevent overcharging. The phone will tell the AC adapter to stop supplying power and as such it does. You can keep devices plugged in for days without any current reaching the battery. If your phone is still charging past 100% then that's a faulty AC adapter which should be replaced.
It's -20C outside now while inside being 20C so that's a 40 degree difference and I have no issues with my phone just cracking out of no where. Glass surely will crack under drastic temp changes but definitely not that easy, especially tempered glass on (like such on cars).

It's -20C outside now while inside being 20C so that's a 40 degree difference and I have no issues with my phone just cracking out of no where. Glass surely will crack under drastic temp changes but definitely not that easy, especially tempered glass on (like such on cars).

I can only go by what my Network told me, I was placed on hold whilst they contacted the Nexus Team whoever they are. When he came back he stated that I had left my phone charging for too long which would have likely caused the glass to fail.
Even I was shocked when I saw the shattered glass and thought they're going to think I dropped it. But then dropping the phone with the special glass shouldn't cause it to shatter, maybe a crack or two, but as per the picture this is an all over shatter.
Maybe I just had a one off duff phone, time will tell as I've ordered a replacement as I actually love the phone itself. Had a HTC for 2 years with not a scratch as I look after my things.

Sorry but this is utter nonsense. If this is really what they said, then either they were winding you up for a laugh, or they didn't know what they were talking about.

Maybe they thought it was funny and were winding me up then. I guess they just replace phones for no reason?
I'm pretty sure if there were no known faults they wouldn't just offer a free exchange or an alternate phone if they thought I'd smashed the thing myself.
Mine broke by being in my pocket just the other day. It's on it's way to LG right now for possible Warranty work.

Its not the glass affected by temperature changes, rather the metal components and frame that are. This "can" cause glass to crack.
Did your phone have any kind of skin or protector on the back?
I have heard stories of cracking from temp changes.
I have a front and back protector and have not had any trouble with mine going from zero degrees outside to 70 inside or vice versa.

Leaving it charging over night has absolutely no ill effects on the battery.

Are you making this story up mate? I don`t believe a word of it and it sounds like troll language to me Damage like that seems to be caused by a fall (flat on it`s back) rather than a overheated battery imo. It would take a sudden 40-50 degrees Celsius increase and most probably the glas would melt rather than break. Breakage is caused by temperature differences between the inner and outer side off the glas. And you don`t have it fixed allthough they offered it too you?

It looks like a typical stress fracture of the glass.
I'm not convinced normal changes in temperature is the cause as otherwise we'd not be using glass for windows!
Charging overnight is perfectly safe and doesn't harm the battery. Lithium batteries explode if constantly charged so the charging circuitry is carefully designed to monitor the charge and stop it when the battery is full. There are also safe guards in place, which likely the red flashing LED issue is an indicator of a fail-safe being triggered.
Sometimes lithium batteries go wrong. The lithium batteries in the Nexus are not in a rigid metal can like most but a different technology that allows them to be in a soft foil packet, much like you might find food in. This means a fault can cause the battery to expand, this would deform the back, stressing the glass and breaking it. Typically with such a fault there will be heat, so 1st line support on hearing of customers finding a hot phone with a smashed back may be coming to the wrong conclusion that heat is the cause.
The only people that know the truth are LG who will find these phones winging their way back to them, and unless this is a huge problem where a recall is required, we will probably never know or be told of a confirmed cause of these "Unexplained Spontaneous Back Shattering" events or USBS, and there probably isn't one single cause anyway.

Why would I make it up? I asked the question if anyone else has had similar issues as when my replacement arrives on Tuesday, if it happens again, I would like to know if it is infact a common issue.
Had I have dropped the phone I would be asking if anyone knows how I could get it fixed. Why would anyone waste time posting a load of lies?
As it happens 3 Network have advised they are aware of over charging causing the back glass to break, although I don't see any warnings or advice over how long you should keep a phone on charge.
I fail to see how what I have stated has given you reason to think I am trolling. I am happy with the phone itself and feel it's worth another go as it's fast and to be honest is one of the best handsets I have had.

Now, this I can agree with. The reason I have given the phone a second chance is that I believe I had a duff phone. I was offered a different phone, but stuck with the Nexus as I actually love it so far.
When I contacted 3, they placed me on hold for a few minutes and came back to advise they had spoken to the Nexus Team, wether that be at 3 or Google, I have no idea. The conversation was almost accusing me of over charging, but being an average phone user I do not know what over charging is. I just plug the phone in and leave it as I always have with previous phones.
The phone itself was not in any pocket, but just sitting on the sofa when it shattered and I too find it hard to believe it just shattered by itself, but in all honesty it did! I have no reason to come on here and say otherwise.
Let's hope the replacement will give me many hours of use, I've ordered a 2 cases to ensure if I do drop it, I get some protection.

I have charged overnight every night since November with no ill effects. I've used various nexus and non-nexus chargers.
I've also never used a screen protector and have had no scratches. I have a 3 quid S tpu for the back and sides.

I've never not charged a phone all night. If I had to wake up at 1 or 2 in the morning to unplug this phone I would sell it today, that is ridiculous. I can't believe that LG or any company would think that this would be acceptable in 2013. Maybe back in the stone age but not today. With that being said, my phone is still in perfect condition with a protector on the front and back. The only thing that drives me crazy is the creakiness of the phone. I hope this crap gets straightened out.
