Alright I have thought about making this post and after making an intense review of the latest issues users are reporting I believe now its the time.
So after 13 days of using the Xperia i have suffered from:
Extreme battery flush even in standby.(I use Task Panel lite to auto-kill apps not needed and still get surprises...)
1.6 Android compatibility issues with latest 2.1 programs.
Snapdragon processor that cant stand lagging on Timescape and Mediascape
Phone calls not heard correctly on the other side of the line.
No fre GPS support like TOMTOM or similar even do the chip is there.
Multitouch debates.
No root as of today...(yes i know no one promised...)
...and many other issues users are experimenting on their devices that really aint freaking cool.
So the dilemma is... Is it really worth all the headaches?
I mean very few have gone clean without any issues but many others have problems from the moment the Xperia pops its head out of the box.
I am starting to feel like it was a major mistake to trade in my HD2 for this so new stylish and hot piece of s*** that is begging for major concerning updates on behalf of SE. Maybe something spectacular might happen on its own that will make my 489€ phone work like it should, but as the days go by I see that if it aint one thing is another involved in the issues evolving the super dupper Xperia X10 that had promised to be the next best thing since sliced bread, but turns out its looking more like an overtoasted slice to me...
How do you people feel about this ?

Simply put, I feel it's a spectacular phone Timescape and Mediascape need some work, but otherwise I have zero issues and I'm enjoying this phone ALOT.
Many of those are not major issues and are really the result of someone complaining. I mean 2.1 applications dont work properly with 1.6? Really? I find the phone fast and the battery great. I and many of my friend who have iphones were immediately impressed with the speed of this phone. Do you have a ton of applications constantly updating? My phone easily lasts all day long on one charge with heavy use and thats all you can ask from a smartphone. An Iphone barely lasts 10 hours for me. Couldnt tell you it didnt have multitouch because I do not miss it, or even care about it.
I am actually ecstatic with this phone. It has exceeded my expectations.
Headaches, really? I don't know what the complains are. SE told everyone that it is being shipped with 1.6. I have been using 1.6 with the HTC Magic and I knew exactly what to expect.
Battery? Read about others phones. It is the same complain all over. I remember when I had the Nokia N95 and that was the first complain out of the box. Just be patient and wait a couple of weeks to see if there is a trend.
Root? No one promised you that the phone will be rooted. Root is at the mercy of whoever is interested in tinkering with the phone.
Multitouch? Over-rated. Never liked it eventhough my HTC Magic has it with the Amon_Ra rom. I prefer using the +/-.
In the end, it is a matter of expectations. There is nothing really wrong with the phone, as promised by SE.
With complete honesty I can say that after two weeks of using the X10 I am finding little to complain about.
Battery life has improved and I can use it heavily for a full days work without problem.
Lots of reviews before release complained of lag, but I really have seen no lag on this phone, I am not currently using a task killer as I believe it does more harm than good.
My only 'customizations' have been to load the HTC keyboard and use K9 for email (I needed push!). Other than that I really think it is the best phone I have had.

Yes, even with all the quirks, battery problem, unironed Mediascape (managing Playlist), X10 is my best phone yet. Can't wait for all of those stuff to be ironed out.
I had a HTC HD2 previously, was one of the first to own one. Now THAT was a phone with serious issues, pink camera pictures, sms messages stuck in outbox were the two biggest.
This Xperia X10 is a fantastic phone in comparison, I can't put my finger on what it is, maybe its the android OS, I don't know but I love it.
Issues for me inlude
Battery drainage, which I'm starting to be quite thankful for in a weird kind of way. Because it runs down by the early evening, I'm chargin g it every night, so it is always fully charged the next day
Lack of camera automatic flash is a pain.
Call volume is low.
The butons whilst making a call are odd. There are no call and reject hard keys which I find annoying.
I turned TimeScape off straight away as it was a waste.
Everything else is prety perfect for me, even the older Android OS.

What did I miss? Since when is Tomtom free? There are enough GPS packages out there:
-iGo/MotoNav
-CoPilot
-Sygic
-etc etc
You choose!
As for your other points:
-Battery will get better, I'm now getting 48 hours out of it. All smartphones suffer from this. I see some users getting amazing results with the battery. Better standby time than any of the competition. Just give it some time to break-in nicely.
-Android 1.6 .. I don't miss anything. If 2.1 was so important to have right away you should have bought the Desire/N1 (but then you wont have the good camera and spectacular design)
-Snapdragon lags, it seems to lag sometimes on the other phones too
-Phone calls work allright for me, maybe bad reception/bad sim?
-Multitouch, same as Android 1.6, you knew it hadn't MT when you bought the device, so why complain? With the 4" screen I don't miss MT, I don't game on the X10.
-Root will come, again you knew this when you bought the phone..
The X10 is the best phone I owned period. However it could give you headaches if it's not the right phone for you. However you should have noticed that when browsing specs/reading reviews/buy the phone...
I get all your points guys and I appreciate the feedback.
Slight correction: With free GPS I meant without using 3G assistance, like Igo08 for example.
But your right, the battery issue should settle in after a few more days and I really hope to adapt myself to the X10 way of doing things.
Obviously when Timescape makes the correct modifications it will kick some serious butt... BUT for now you gotta give it to me that it was presented in a way smoother way then it really is! anyhow thanks for the feedback once again.
I have to Agree with Cinner.....after 1 1/2 weeks with this phone, I still have a hard time putting it down. The battery life could better as 10 hours of life is not enough but the overall feel and UI make up for that shortfall.
The HTC magic I had was on its 3rd replacement before trading for the X10....so far no lock ups or freezing

You can use any of the Android compatible GPS applications(Sygic,N_drive,Motonav,Copilot)without 3G assistance(Turn it off)and still get a very fast gps lock.

Well, none of them are free.
This is the only thing making me still use my 5800 XM as my main phone and the X10 as media device
issues with xperia x10
I agree with the original post.
I have been experiencing many issues too with xperia x10 and i am very disappointed with this device.
I had an HTC Hero before and when i now switched to xperia x10 it feels like going back in time. The user experience and usability of the interface is far from the HTC Sense UI. You can really feel that HTC has been testing, merging, integrating and polishing many nice widgets to make the user have a good use of the android phone functions.
As some examples, the x10 comes with 3 emails clients by default (e-mail, gmail, moxier mail), but none of them can show all mail accounts integrated in the same. Why so many applications for emails????
I have to switch from one application to the other to see all my emails from various accounts, ex gmail, outlook exchange i need to use moxier mail. It was also not possible to add IMAP with certificate to the standard e-mail client, you have to use another speciifc program (moxier mail) for direct connection to exchange server and synch. The calender had the same issue. The calendar widget only shows google calendar and does not integrate both outlook calendar and google in the same as the HTC Hero. HTC Hero provides a single email clienst which shows all the emails from all accounts, very nice, and so easy to set up, same for calendars.
When i first started the X10 phone it had very little on the start screan, no widgets really, only the timescape, which was empty, and a browser which was empty too. no music player widget. no weather widget by default either. very bad impression. HTc comes with all widgets pre-installed, the music player is really good. Xperia x10 media scape looks really bad in comparison.
Another issue was when i wanted to use TED application to see videos from TED talk, well no video at all, only sound plays back. the application worked perfectly in HTC Hero which had same android 1.6 version...hmmmm.
Another issue is the battery as well, i feel really as the battery is comsumed very fast, it lasted only 7h.
The screen and design cannot be changed either, or i havenät figured out how, it seems as you can change only the background picture of the desktop, but not the overall theme of the phone, incl sounds and colors of windows.
The white text on fading blue background color is very difficult to read, especially on the bottom of the device...so only the 2/3 upper part is readable when in menus/settings. I also have been missing the trackball.
In htc hero (and all other htc sense phones like htc desire) you can customise the phone screens and themes much more and the overall design is consistent in all places.
I also find no use of mediascape or timescape. Mediascape is a bit rudimental compared with other media player. Timescape is really unusable, since you can´t read the text over the images in the backgroud, and the smaller one have so small text as well.
Positive things? .. let me think hard ... yes 3: the sligthly large screen, the 8m camera, the accessories.
In xperia x10 you can feel that the SonyEricsson team was not really ready when they shipped this phone. I really hope that the 2.1 upgrade coming will also bring some better integration, consistency and GUI improvements as HTC does. Onother solution would be to get the htc sense rom on the x10.
This thread should be retitled to "So few issues with x10". The post preceding mine is downright laughable, not enough widgets! Are you serious? That's your niggle? This easily SE's most ready for primetime phone EVER.
no one is perfect. and this applies to cell phones. if you don't like it. sell it to someone else who will appreciate it more.
and btw. i am enjoying my new X10 VERY MUCH.
its nice that you point out some of the negative issues about the phone but dont make it sound like SE made the phone just for you and you are not satisfy with it.
email your pts to SE and hope they will improve base on your opinion
Completed my 15th day with X10. First few days I was worried about battery but all that got better as I know I was using my phone a lot more than I normally do the first few days as I am trying to customize and play with the phone. Now, it easily lasts me like any other phone I had recently (Nexus One, iPhone 3GS, X1, etc).
I feel it's the best phone I ever owned even though I have a long wishlist but mainly the ability to create playlists and also to be able to add a track to the listening queue and smart dialer. There are free apps for smart dialer but I love the look of X10 dialer so I end up going back to it even though I miss the smart dial feature.
I don't see any lag with TimeScape or MediaScape. All I notice is if I open TimeScape after several hours and I have several new updates on Twitter and Facebook, it takes time only because it is trying to download data to update the tiles. If I am on WiFi, even these downloads happen quite fast.
The only main mod I did is change the keyboard to Swype.
Yes The X10 have problems, some people can live and still love it, others just can't stand it. Nothing is perfect, if you can't live with it, just part with it really.
I love my X10 with all its quirks, just to be a little bit patient till the Pros root the device and start cooking. SE won't do any updates until they release Android 2.1, lucky if we get that by september.
i dont know what you talking about. i know some have batteri iddue but i think domthing is erong with the batteri or phone since i dont have anny problem. the only bug/ issue the phone has is bluetoth that will be fixt in a patch. yes it can take 5 - 10 sec load timescape but its not lagy at al at my phone. send your phone back for repair and it will be fixt

I think you have demonstrated another 'out of the box' issue with the X10 in your post there ! The shoddy default keyboard included on the X10 I have updated to the HTC keyboard and that is workng fine now, though I still find the IPOD keyboard easier to use....
Is it me or has this so called lag been blown completely out of proportion with the SGS? I used to have a HTC Hero, I tell you, it's like going from riding a snail to a rocket fuselage. That phone was so slow, a phone may I add which only a year ago was seen as the 'iPhone killer'.
Please are there any previous HTC Hero users who now own a SGS? You have to speak out!
I mean sure, I've used a HTC Desire, it's very fast. But the only difference I have noticed is that on the SGS sometimes Apps take around 3secs longer to open than they should. That's it!! I mean, why are you all complaining so much! It's just as fast as the Desire except that point.
I have now had the SGS for 2 weeks, I haven't noticed any considerable slowdown. It works great! Why are you all complaining like babies? Have you installed Crysis 2 on your SGS or something, obviously your phone would never work again if you did that. Before anybody asks, I have made no changes to my SGS. I have an unlocked SGS, still on Touchwiz, no flash, no root. I don't even use task killer for God's sake. Please would someone explain to me what the big deal is?
What you have to realise is that it's not an always persistent problem. The phone in general is extremely fast, however with earlier firmwares the phone does not free up memory effectively. 3 seconds is nothing, but I recall sometimes waiting 10-15 seconds for the Dialer to launch. And when the memory is really really clogged up, it's a complete pain even pressing the home screen button (waiting 10 seconds to go to home isn't pretty either). For a phone with so much power, do you really think this is normal?
The difference must just be that I'm not a heavy app user. I still have the stock firmware the phone came with. Never had a 10 second delay with anything. Never noticed any sort of build up of lag. It works great! Do you guys install like 50 apps on your phones or something? Clearly that must be your problem.
I have never had any problems either (other than with flaky GPS).
Someone told me how to replicate the lag issue, and it boiled down to having 8-odd apps running in the background at once. I would expect the same on my multi-core 4GB RAM iMac, let alone a phone with 256MB RAM.
Not saying others are only having problems with the above situation, but it does seem like there are specific factors that cause it, which is why a lot of people have had no problems.
The phone has 512mb ram.
Just that currently, HiMem is not available (will be in froyo as a default, and if we're lucky, in the JF6 firmware as well)

And although I am not a really heavy app user, I am a heavy user, and it wasn't hard to make the phone lag quite heavily at times, so I'd say no, it has not been blown out of proportion.

Tachikoma_kun,
Please understand that Android does not work like the Mac OSX on an iMac, and that, if you open 8 odd apps in a row, you should _not_ have them all running in the background at once.
Android's memory management should close applications and free memory as needed. Processes will start if needed, be set to inactive as long as possible and killed if necessary. This works fine with other Android devices and obviously not with the Galaxy S.
You can read about the life cycle of Android Components at
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/fundamentals.html
Using a task killer to free up memory might make your Galaxy S faster than not using one, but this is still a lot less efficient than it should be. In a working Android system you should use the most out of your available memory and the system should stay fast as you open and switch between applications. You should never have to think about which applications are running or not running.
Again, this works just fine with other devices. If it does not work with the Galaxy S then this is a serious flaw in the system. The flaw might be related to the slow I/O on the internal SD, or maybe there is a firmware bug besides the I/O. But it is currently not working correctly.
If you have access to 256mb memory of RAM, and you use a task killer to always keep 100MB free, then you use your device like it only had 156MB.
I also do not believe that the average customer without a technical background is able to use a task killer without shooting himself in the foot. Without knowledge about what each application and service does, and how android manages background processes, how should a normal user know what he can kill and which services he should keep running?
lag problem blown out of proportion. May be froyo update will satisfy the hunger of these power hungary geeks.

Perhaps whether a person thinks it's slow or not depends on what that person was used to?
That is exactly what i was telling people.
I come from the HTC Athena, and OMG... that thing is like crawling on sand, even with its super duper 625 Mhz CPU which by then was supposed to be the state of the art.
yet everything i did was sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow, using the SGS was like smooth flowing water, everything is perfect in this phone out of the box.

Im not a SGS owner but i keep noticing the reference to the desire. I did own a snapdragon device until about a week ago. (Droid Incredible). Switched to droid x. The only real reason i believe there is lag on the samsung is the touchwiz. The cpu&gpu in the SGS IS FAR SUPERIOR to that of the desire. Htc just has the most polished custom ui. If u get launcher pro id be willing to bet that lag is gonzola in a hurry. Maybe give this a try? Just trying to help my fellow androiders out. Goodluck fellas

what made you choose a Droid X vs. a SGS i9000?
the 2 phones are almost identical, except for the camera.
the lag is very real.
try opening Dolphin HD and then closing it again .....about 8+ seconds to do either, and that's with nothing else open.
instantaneous on the nexus with 2.2.
some apps are much slower than others, some there is no difference, but even the default samsung apps such as phonebook have a good lag when switching between tabs.

I agree. I'm guessing you haven't used/owned a HTC Hero? If so, you haven't experienced the PAIN!! lol.
On my side I don't have any heavy app, I don't do games, or HD stuff what I expect from my phone is to be able to show me my mail ... and that's where I have plenty of lag ( not all the time but everyday for sure).
Lag to open the mail, lag to delete the mail, lag to come back on the homescreen.
Up to 15 sec to come back from the settings menu.
My benchmark is the iphone 3GS but also the HTC P3600 and the HTC diamond which are not that fast
I have never been waiting so long in front of my phone.
Excuse me if I am working with my phone and I don't want to wait 10 sec all the time.
And stop insulting people who complains please
Oh and the comment about installing 50 apps .... please learn how android is supposed to work. I should be able to install 1000 app without any problem. Who care about the number of app installed ???
By the way, when I have a lot of lag I go in systempanel to see what it my amount of memory and it's around 30-50 Mb so it should not be a problem.
I don't get it. I have compared my Vibrant to my Nexus one and 95% of the time the Vibrant is just as fast. Two exceptions, the market and speedtest.net app. Other than that, it flies! I will say before I did a hard reset the phone was in fact slow, it was a day and night difference after the reset. I get no lag, fast swipe through screens with TW launcher and apps open fast!
I have no lag that I can notice, but then again I don't bog my phones down with a ton of apps and games I will never use.
No lag. Stock rom, haven't factory resetted either. No GPS problems either without GPS fix o.0
Guess I was just lucky. I applied lag fix for the benchmarks for the hell of it though.
How speedy a device feels is very subjective and varies under different conditions.
I do have a Nexus One too ( in fact two) and in some respects it feels more responsive (mostly the menu, home, back and search button). Applications open faster as well.
Now, the comparison is not fair, ad the N1 is running Froyo and doesn't have the bloatware services installed by TMo (visual voicemail, my account, et al)
Browser and rendering speeds are much faster in the vibrant. Noticeably.
Download speed are much faster in the vibrant as well. Using Speedtest.net the vibrant scores 6 mbs vs 2 on the N1, same place, same time, same servers.
I think the biggest issue with the vibrant (other than the compass and the gps) is filesystem access, probablu due to using a large flash-based memory for storing apps.
I expect that when (if) the Froyo update arrives, the phone will fly.
In the meantime, and depending which apps people have installed and how they use the phone, some will continue to have better experiences with the N1, others with the vibrant.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I don't have an N1 to compare to, but, there was definitely a lag. Tolerable most of the time, but it would be completely frozen during a single install of an app from market. And don't get me started on a phone reboot. I wish I had timed it to be exact, but it must have been 5 entire minutes from reboot to when I could open and actually use the camera again to record something. Opera loads probably twice (maybe 2.5 times) as fast. Engadget would literally take 5 seconds to come up and at *least* 5 seconds *per page* to load, if not more. I would hit the arrow and have to wait..and wait..and wait. Now, I can hit the arrow repeatedly and it scrolls through news (both new and old)
Maybe not all phones lagged, but mine certainly did. Hope froyo helps some so I'm not forced to run a hack to get around poor rfs performance (or whatever it is).

Would really like to know when people without gps or speed problems got their phones. I bought mine the 19th of July from costco.
Also, the, "take off all your apps and games you don't use regularly. Don't use any widgets on your screens. Don't use all 7 screens for apps or widgets" comments are counterproductive. The phone was DESIGNED for this kind of use and if it doesn't perform as designed. Well, that's a problem.
One more thing - people like me who post about perceived problems are not HATERS. I love the phone and its potential with future upgrades to the software and firmware. That's why I come to this forum, to gets thoughts from the android community. Besides, if everyone who loved the phone and had zero problems with it posted all the time there would be no room for those of us seeking advice.

I wanted to say that I did the lag fix via the update.zip method and everything flies now including the Geniewidget which would rarely load articles. Samsung needs to or has fixed this (not sure, we don't know until we get an official update) but.. I can use the TWLauncher now.
Coming from a G1 I don't see any lag compared to what I was used to. Running Launcher Pro I personally feel its a bit smoother than TW 3.0, but still works perfectly fine for me.
I often wonder if people just look for something to tweak because they simply can't leave things alone and constantly want to improve because they simply can.

There is some lag that was very noticeable which happened every time you tried to use the market place and some random apps(the market was faster on my mt3g before the lag fix), after the lag fix the loading screen is gone if not instant.
Just did this update and I went from 983 to 2187! Awesome difference!

Same story for me. I've never seen this lag that everyone is talking about (except for the one person that mentioned some lag when installing apps - EVERY Android phone lags for a few seconds while an app is installing). I run the standard TW home and rooted and uninstalled a few of the bloatware apps I'd never use. Don't really see any reason to do the "lag fix".
...does anyone else feel that the text messaging on Android 2.1 on the Wildfire is complete and utter garbage?
Its as slow as death mainly and takes forever to jump back from a text to the inbox etc and when you send a text you can't jump out for about 5 secs till the text is actually sent. Then when you want to jump from the inbox to the main screen using the back button it takes another 3 secs.
I'm now using 'whatsapp' for messaging and its like a million times faster with almost zero lag! How the hell can a 3rd party app be better than an integrated part of the OS? I don't get it.
Seems like smartphones should be renamed 'dumbphones' as they are crap at being a phone and not quite as good as a computer for the 'smart' stuff! Basically stuck in the middle of nowhere!
Rant over!
ps. i know i expect too much! Just my nature!
It's alright to me.
Also, Android has the power of SMS replacers.
Handcent SMS is a perfect example.
<rant>
how many messages do you have? i had like 3500, then they got deleted when i wiped all the data, and it was as fast as my dads desire. i was shocked. but then i flashed openfire without doing a backup, now ive lost my original rom forever

I never actually used the stock messaging app. As soon as I got my phone my friend told me to dl handcent.

Yeah, but even handcent and chompsms have anoying lag times. I just did the froyo update this night, and i have the feeling that the lag time is even worse.. shouldn't froyo be faster then eclair? I main, even my MFLOPS are 20% lower now :-o Don't know what to do anymore :s

Have a try at Go SMS. It's faster (well I think it is) and also some of the themes are cool , I'm using it as a replacement for HandcentSMS atm.
upgraded to 2.2...
Nothing to do with what app you use anymore, Andriod is just effing crap! Typing just laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaags! All i get is lag, constantly having to go back a retype words that have failed to enter properly.
Crap, crap, crap!
Nokia make crap smartphones but bloody good phones that work as a phone and allow u to type as fast as u want and not miss a beat.
Android just lags, crashes and generally feels crap and makes a superb useless Dumbphone!
Rant over.
I have never experienced lag while texting
same here, i've never had lag or any problems with texting.
maybe you're not using your phone properly ;D
yup i am using GO SMS and its quite fast ,.. the most imp setting is that u need to reduce the number of messages that the phone stores per convo. i kept it to 20 and it phone works smoothly.. no lag even in the built in msging app.
and if ur experiencing typing lags again that is due to the excessive memory the phone has to use to get all the stored messages.
ALso download a different keyboard (many avail on market) they are all awesome and really u will experience super fast typing with hardly any lag...
i type on my wildfire all the time.. gtalk, watsapp, imo im, messaging, FB, twitter.. never had any issues

Don't blame Android, blame HTC. The 2.2 update was crap, which is why many people advised against doing it... it mainly made the phone slower and changed the label to "2.2" from 2.1 as far as a user can see. My phone is snappy and runs fast on CyanogenMod 7 (2.3.2) (which is pure android)
edit: oh and i never experienced lag like how you say even with the htc sense keyboard. (maybe a tiny lag every now and then but nothing big)
i found that turning prediction off did wonders for lag

Thanks for the info folks.
I'm actually using Sunaabh's custom 2.2 ROM which is very good overall.
I don't wanna use any ROMs that don't allow the camera to function properly.
Maybe you guys don't type fast enough, i tend to type very fast with the old style phone keypad and i expect the phone to keep up but it doesn't.
I don't care how much memory my messages take up because i bought a smartphone because it should be able to handle it and i shouldn't have to worry about basic crap like that. I expect the phone to work as a phone without any issues. But HTC have failed me. I simply can't imagine how horrible other Android phones are as the Sense overlay is meant to be the best out the lot! And generally its a fantastic overlay apart from the lag.
I suppose i'll just have to learn to type slower.

Camera works fine on CM7 using Vignette. Sometimes better pics than with sense. only video recording is shaky but even on sense it sucked so doesnt make much of a difference.
And no you're not the only person who types ultra fast, on the gingerbread keyboard (which is supposed to be faster than sense) i got letter repeats because of lag due to word prediction (it wwould come oout like tthis). I turned off the key popups and all lag disappeared
Edit: i seem to remember keyboard lagged quite a bit on the stock rom, but it stopped when i switched to wildpuzzle (this was before cm had even come out)
slideit keyboard with abc mode = flawlezzy

-it's so annoying, when you are in text messages and you touch a "persons" txt, but it opens ANOTHER person's grouped text!
I've even txted eg. person a, but the message went to person b!
wtf!?
I got the very first android that was available in Japan, HTC Magic via docomo 2 years ago. It was a terrible experience back then, super slow, but somewhat relieved by cyanogen mods back then.
Finally I gave up and decided to get an iPhone until Android matures enough.
I went thru two iPhone cycles and what can I say ... while they are very boring, they just worked.
2 Days ago I decided to get another Android, the Xperia Arc from docomo.
I am running Android 2.3.2 SO-01C build. All stock.
It's a lot better of an experience than the Magic was, but still I am surprised how slow it is. I read all these fantastic reviews here and I am just thinking "don't you have these issues, too?"
Yesterday I was at a networking event and tried to pull out my phone (xperia arc) to get someone's contact details. I tried to launch the Contacts app, and it actually takes 10sec+ with a white screen, then some sluggish interface pops up.
By the time I was ready to enter the number and email, the moment had passed and we settled on exchanging business cards instead. (quite embarrassing)
I was very disappointed.
I am having the same problem with the browser and the Gmail app. They both go thru these 10-15 seconds loading stage with white blank screen. After that I can close the app and restart it quickly, but if you leave it for sometime it does the blank screen thing again.
When going back to the home screen from any app, I first get a blank screen with just the wallpaper, then the dock loads, then some apps load, then the google widget loads. Feels like I am loading images on an 3x86 running windows 3.1.
Sometimes, it's even worse. I close "Pulse" newsreader app trying to return to "home" and I get to the home screen but "Pulse" turned into my wallpaper and it won't go away until I kill the process explicitly.
I mean ... can this really be thru? A brand new, top of the line phone running stock rom from Sony Ericsson.
They must've seen these issues when testing the phone.
Almost like XP writing to swap partition and my harddrive is falling asleep, except that my phone doesn't have a hard drive...
How can it still be that bad??
-----------------------------------------------
Solved. It is crazy fast now!!
I reset the phone and DID NOT sign into any of the timescape stuff.
That did it for me.
It actually feels faster than the iPhone4 now. Wow, I am really amazed how far android got since I last tried it with the HTC Magic.

They didn't and it isn't - you have a faulty handset.
Do you honestly believe that if the reviewers had handsets that took 10+ seconds to open an app that it would get the sorts of reviews the Arc has had?
That's ridiculous, no reviewer worth their salt would ever try and pretend that was reasonable performance, they'd lose all credibility.
Try resetting your handset or repairing it via SEUS, if that doesn't fix the issue, get it replaced.

... trust me, I don't want to believe it, that's why I posted here. I am very very disappointed after having spent a lot of money on this phone an then getting this.
It's a faulty phone, it happens - even to Apple.
^ Agreed. I also had the HTC magic before and just recently upgraded to the arc and what a world of difference!! The arc is so snappy and I don't have to wait 10-15 seconds to load up anything as I did before.
Suggest you reset and start from scratch....
I've seen almost similar problem. I reflashed and it never had the problem. Could be because of some Widgets or apps you installed are the problem. Also, very high resolution wallpaper could be issue. Some of the weather Widgets could be a pain depending on what add-on you installed. I find weatherbug elite slows my Arc.
Mate, 2 option;
1. go back to iphone. Sell you ARC.
and
2. visit your local Sony repair services, again for swap.
cheers
James
will try the reset now.
... sigh, so disappointed. Hope this is gonna help a bit.

can't go back to my iPhone, I still have it. I have two contracts running. I wanted to use both simultaneously for half a year to really test it, while my iPhone contract is still running.
Get rid of the task manager, it'll do more harm than good.
Android manages tasks automatically, you don't need any extra apps to do so.
guys, I reset the phone and it seems a hell of a lot faster now. Unbelievable. I hope it stays this way, almost snappier than my iPhone.
Just one thing is weird, I cannot use the android market on my desktop anymore to install my apps remotely.
I haven't added cliphWeather widget back yet. I wonder if that was slowing everything down.
Don't use task killer and it won't help you anyways.
Try to do a factory reset or try and put a stock ROM without Docomo's stuff on it. You can simply flash with "Flash Too" program with no problem.
Even some apps in market says built for android 2.2 and up or 2.1 and up they are not yet ready with 2.3 therefore they have bugs which have not been worked out.
Flash a brand new ROM and don't install your apps. just set up your stuff and see if you have problem still.
If yes, then return the phone and get a new one.
If no, then you will be a happy person.
Good Luck
thanks for all the replies.
All I did was reset the phone and not install "CliphWeather" and it is lighting fast.
I am very impressed.
I also didn't sign into all the timescape stuff that SE offers.
Everything working as expected now.

Lol yea from 1000 iPhone 4 maybe one is faulty. It is true. The arc is not what is suppose to be. Its just a beautiful phone that takes great pics... and I know u all going to say to op guy do a master reset. Get rid of crapware use launcher pro or adw lol. Here we go again. Look around here ..there is a lot of people complaining about same.issue. mine is running "OK" I use my thunderbolt more(blows this away 1000 times in.speed even running a beta 2.3.4 with sense 3.0 seriously) its the Sony UI ..definitely ...I'm gonna play around with the xperia play USA version tomorrow. Not Sony UI ..plain gingerbread and I guaranteed its way faster than arc. ..when sensations comes out this arc going up on eBay ..definitely. its 2011 no need to have headache with this when there is great faster devices out there. ... dude. Trust me. U gonna do a reset/re install rom maybe bla bla. At the end of the day u need to reboot cause phone gets laggy. Period. Unless a custom rom comes out without Sony UI then we talk

Apple have similar failure rates to any other manufacturer.
Except unlike SE, they only give you a one year warranty.

Lol are you seriously that cynic? Just because your phone, which you probably screwed up yourself, seems slow and crappy, ALL the other Arcs in the world have the same issues? You made my day man..
My Arc was facing the same slowness problem...
Seem if u sync facebook contacts the arc always connects to the net before opening contacts to sync the status updates... useless really....
Uninstalled FB ... is now lightning fast ....
