How does it work? Over wifi? Do most tvs support it? How is the quality? Could you play a flash movie or web browse?

It is in fact over wifi and I use it with my ps3. You can't surf the web it play games it's just for steaming your media from your phone to you're tv using dlna. There's too much buffering with videos though. Your can check your electronics on the dlna.org website to see if there dlna certified.

Yes, it's DLNA. Your TV or at least something hooked up to it (Xbox 360, ps3) must be DLNA compliant. You can also use this technology to stream directly from your PC while using the mt4g as a media controller.

If you have a dlna TV or another dlna compliant device hooked to your TV, it will seamlessly auto-detect the mt4g. That's the beauty of dlna technology. It requires very little setup. Google dlna.
For the love of god I can't figure this out. All I want to do is to stream , let's say, couple of pictures from phone to my W7 PC. How do I set-up my PC for that? Sorry if this is off-topic, I googled for the last 3 hours and couldn't come up with anything

I believe Twonky, the company that makes the screen share app for the mytouch, has a PC app. Go to twonky.com and see if a download is available. That would surely sync your PC with your phone.

yes,,twonky makes a pc app,and yes it works AWSOME,,you can get the 30 day trial,,or just buy it for 20. bucks..you set your phone < twonky app > to be a media source then you will SEE twonky media server on,,,a list of servers twonky SEE'S on both your pc and phone so if you have ps3--xbox 360--a compatable tv,,twonky will see all of them,,so you can send from your pc,to phone ,,or phone to pc....it will scan your media and then from ypour phone you pick a vidio--pic--song and start to play it ,,and wala your pc opens a twonky window and starts to play your stuff,,,,,,,,you can also use windows media player 10,,,,,start the player then go to your phone and start the all share,,,twonky app, then go to settings ,,set destination and you should / will see the win media player on your comp. now,,,you have to keep win player up in the back ground or it will not be seen by your phone,,anyone have some setings we can try i dont know about to keep win player < LISTENING > for the phone app???
I use Twonky to stream pics and vids to my Samsung LCD. Works great over Wi-Fi.
Just fire up the Screen Share app on the MT4G and run through the setup.

I just fired this up in the hopes of it working with my PS3, but I couldn't quite get it to work. Frankly, that does not upset me that much, because I wouldn't ever really use it.
Now, however, I have no idea how to turn off the twonky server on my phone. The help file mentions clicking on the "large power button" in the center of the twonky server, but the only button in the whole program just rescans. I am not even connected to my wifi anymore. The interface of this app is just terrible.

I just found out about this site a few days ago. It's a lot like the old TV Links site. What's really good about it is that all the videos are FLV files, so you can download them and play them with TCMP.
Have fun.
www.surfthechannel.com
how do you download the flv file
Yeah, how do we grab and download the movie file?
Once, they created a site called www.google.com !! (joke)
It's the same protocol as Youtube
I use Orbit Downloader (Grab++ plugin) to download FLVs and other media from sites
But this site doesn't work on our PDAs, except if we have the new Skyfire browser.
?
if we dont have the skyfire browser on our devices is/are there any other sites out there tht allow us to view movies and tv shows like this one on phones...?

Not true. I can watch FLVs using Opera and flash player 7. You have to go to settings and choose Identify as a desktop computer.

There are several Firefox extensions that allow you to download FLV files.

We know this, and you obviously haven't been/tried to download from this site either from your PDA or PC else you'd notice what we're all saying here...YouTube, MegaVideo etc and all those other great video sites all give an "info/more info" menu from which you can "grab" the download link for the video you want...this site does not.
Surfthechannel is really a good site. I had tried this site. But I think I have a wonderful site which is much better then this site and I always Watch TV Shows on otavo.tv.
Hello. I was wondeirng if anyone can recommend a good youtube program besides youtubeplay? youtubeplay is ok, but It doesnt let you list by date or relivance or whatever. Also, is there any program that plays or downloads veoh.com videos? Thanks
The best way to play ANY streaming media site on a win mo smartphone imho, is the skyfire webbrowser:
http://www.skyfire.com
use phelps8 to get an instant download.
Any streaming media site I've used works awesome with skyfire. Takes some getting used to. check the forums for details. But sites like hulu.com work AWESOME with it for watching full episodes or movies..
mycast.orb.com when set to stream in flash will open right in the browser too which is incredible for streaming off a home PC...
break.com,youtube.com,stupidvideos.com etc etc all work great.
I use CorePlayer and it works great
Skyfire works awsome!! feels like im on a PC viewing the many video streaming sites..only one that doesnt seem to work is veoh..doesnt load the videos
YouTubeplay
CorePlayer has a YouTube quick-button, with several quick choices, like "Most popular" and "most linked to." But beware: The program can hang your 6800 if you go full-screen, requiring a soft-reset.
I've read great things about the new multimedia player with the Japanese-sounding name (K-something?); can't think of it now. It was designed for rich Web content from the ground up.
Kinoma ?
Kinoma
That's it: Kinoma.
Thanks to this thread, I installed YouTubePlay. It works flawlessly; rotation and full-screen toggling cause no freezes. I'll still use CorePlayer for music. Mostly, I watch downloaded TV shows. For that, I prefer Windows Media Player because I've installed a plug-in that lets it remember where I left off...just as my Audible Player does for books I've bought at Audible.com.

youtubeplay plays the lower quality youtube streams, that's why it works "good". The quality is poor.

well, if you watching it on your phone's bandwidth, you might not want to wait for a high quality file to stream over evdo, or use the extra data if you don't have an unlimited plan.
Skyfire plays embedded flash videos pretty well, but its at around 15 frames per second, so its not as smooth as watching it at home, or downloading it first.
TCPMP with the flashVideoBundle.cab installed works well with pocket IE and will give you the option of downloading the video to your phone (so you can watch it later), or streaming it right on the spot (after a short buffer), which works pretty well.

subscribed to JetFlix, in the market. (Jetflicks! TV - Android app on AppBrain) It is a $3 app with a $10/month subscription. I watch it on my phone in my car at the lake during my lunch break. I know that probably sounds sad, but it is AWESOME. I'm a manager in the dang corporate world, and I forget that I am at work by the time I'm done with a movie and come on back to the office. It's my dirty little secret.
ANYWAY, there are some great shows available on this application, and I was thinking of replacing my Netflix subscription with it if I could just stream it to my TV at home. But is anything "streamable" to the tv? I read that only pictures and videos that were shot with the camera stream though the HDMI cable. If that is the case, what is the point? I keep all that stuff on a hard drive anyway.
So my question: can I hook up an HDMI cable and stream Jetflicks to my TV? The Jetflicks movies play on the native player. So I guess a more accurate question would be: Does the native internet browser display on the TV through the HDMI cable? If so, is there audio?
I have an HDMI cable. When I hook it up and press "play," nothing happens on the TV, except that it goes dark. Am I doing something wrong, or is it just impossible.
Waiting with baited breath for someone to break the news to me.
Later
If the program you are using actually lets you download and plays video from the native player it should work. Also when you plug the hdmi cable into your tv and your phone. You should see an icon on the top left of the notifications bar and it should say hdmi
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G
I dont have that icon. Is there an hdmi setting somewhere I need to change?
Probly should email the developer and ask them if it's supposed to work or not?
I might just do that. I guess I might have given too much background information. A simpler question would be:
1. Is the native video player on the evo supposed to work with the HDMI out?
2. If yes:
a. Is there a setting to enable that function?
b. How can you tell which player (native or otherwise) the system is using?
Yes the native video player will use the hdmi out. It is automatic when you plug the hdmi cable into the device and open the video player and hit play the video will be outputted to the HDMI and the evo's screen will show the player function but no video. On the latest EVO update OTA 1.47.651.1 they added an HDMI settings to Force 720p or 480p output but since I haven updated to that rom version yet (still waiting on Fresh 1.0). What I believe that new setting will do is if your video isn't quite fully 720p but over 480p you can now force your phone to upscale the video to 720p output.
Thanks, that makes sense. I'm also on Fresh 0.5.3, waiting for 1.0.
Right now I can't do sh*t. If I plug the HDMI in, the phone freezes.

My Nexus 7 will be here tomorrow but I am disappointed there is no HDMI output like I saw in early photos. I use the port on my Acer to watch movies and view pictures on my TV while traveling. Does Google have any alternate way to do this even using DNLA? I can't find any information on it.
There is not. No HDMI or MHL.
Just, curious as I'm not a developer or programmer, but how hard would it be to make an app to make the N7 dlna or whatever so that we can at least stream to say a ps3 or xbox to watch content on a tv with it?
Possibly the mysterious 4 pin dock connector might be able to do this some day?

I've already posted this a few times..
You can pick up an htc medialinkHD.
Go to the play store and search "medialink" Install an app called Wi-Fi Media by Cavium.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5iaWFub3IuYW1zY2F2aXVtIl0.
When you open the app, you can choose music or video that's stored on the device.
Then choose the medialink HD as the renderer.
This will not clone the display, you won't be able to play games with it or anything. But it will stream videos or music to the tv wirelessly.

Or wait for VLC to update their app on the Play Store. Works perfectly for music, video, and pictures. Basically it's an Airplay-type functionality that works with any computer running VLC. For those of us that have a PC plugged into the TV it's an awesome tool. I can play any media on the device directly on the TV at full resolution, control how it all plays, and even maximize the display. If they update the VLC app for JellyBean I'd be in love!

Yes, that works to. There are other apps that would work with a ps3 or xbox as well.
The only reason I say to use a medialink is because it's portable. If you're traveling on business it's a little hard to tote around a HTPC, or a ps3 to use in your hotel room. But something that's the size of a business card, and about a half inch thick.. No problem.
But, is there no way for this to be worked into a kernel at any point in the future?
I know they figured it out with Team Win's app for the Evo 4G a long while ago...

I have 3 kids and when we travel I use pbo core media box with a 500gb drive along with 2 headrest monitors in the car. The core is about the size of two sandwiches and is very light. Besides carrying a whole library of stuff it can connect to any TV and play any format. It supports upnp as well so with a small router everyone can stream to the device wirelessly.
I used to use a tablet and convert videos,etc...no more of that. I find cloud services, plex, splash top, etc...more an enough for 99% of my tablet viewing.

It has been speculated that the units Google demo'd were modified units to allow for the screen mirroring. In one of the other threads on the HDMI/MHL subject someone posted a link to an article that had pictures of a Nexus 7 with an HDMI port on the bottom left side.

I think he's wanting to do it without dropping any cash on the project. As far as I know, there isn't a way to do that. Personally I'd spend the money on the Chromecast, it's a cheap investment for what you actually get.

What are you trying to stream? The screen or media from your phone? If its media you could probably do it with a dlna app like bubble upnp or something like that.
Im curious about streaming to my tv as well. I dont have internet at home but I do have a LAN I can set up if I desire to. Can I stream from my my LG G2 to a chromecast if I dont have internet access? Will it work just over my LAN?
My G2 can screen share to my Samsung UN46F6300 via Wi-Fi direct. I enable screen share from the tv, and can connect from the G2 immediately. Also, I haven't tried, but I'm fairly sure I can share media via the G2's DLNA app.
Edit - It seems both work. Use Miracast to mirror and Wi-Fi direct for streaming. It would seem that you need to have actual apps on your tv to stream. For example, my tv has a YouTube app, which opens when I stream to the tv. See second photo below. Discoloration is due to f.lux

For example could I stream netflix from my phone to the chromecast via lan? Or would I be limited to just whatever content (movies or music) stored directly on my device?

If you have a TV or other device attached to your tv that supports Miracast, then yes. Once connected to the device/tv with your phone, an exact copy of your phone's display appears on the tv, including the orientation, portrait/landscape. There is a slight delay to it, so playing fast video games isn't much fun, but watching videos works. If you want to play fast paced games, I'd use an HDMI/slimport cable to connect to the TV.
