Ok, this is really bothering me. I know if you go to the contacts list you can choose to dial or text, but if you choose to send a new sms from messaging how do you get it to go to contacts? It doesn't auto complete and it doesn't recognize if you just use the name. The same thing happens in pictures or the gallery. Like the other night I chopped off the tip of my left pointer finger and wanted to share the picture with my brother, but I didn't have the time to navigate through the contacts before I needed some paper towels. Is there an easier way?
Yes. Use handcent app. Its miles better

Been using Handcent for a couple days. I like the easy access to contacts, but I'm unsure about the screen waking up every time and the fact that it gives me 3 separate notifications in the status bar for each message. Thanks for your suggestion.
Hi maye, go into messaging app and turn off notifications... You would only get 1 notification then

I use to use 'SMS Popup' to have a popup box for txt messages where I could quick reply or dismiss messages. With all 2.2 roms it seems that this programs 'close' button no longer marks messages as read. Anyone have a favorite SMS addon that has a popup box with quick reply and dismiss kind of features?
I don't like Chomp or Handcent. I'd prefer something that doesn't take over the native messaging app but is just the pop up stuff.
Anyone use one successfully with our beloved Epics?
the close button marks read for me
Try "SMS Notifier".

somewhat related, if you use launcher pro, there are dock notifications you can use and assign to a swipe gesture on your dock icons. (menu, pref, dock settings, dock notifications; then long press dock icon, swipe gesture action)

Try Go SMS on froyo, I started using it and it works great. Also has the pop ups where you can respond
thx, will give it a shot. I actually tried SMS notifier and that didn't clear them either. I'm 100% sure I turned off the native messaging notification too. Maybe this is one of those weird glitchies that a wipe and flash takes care of? Trying Go SMS now... thx.
just noticed something weird and maybe it's a bug of sorts. When I text myself from an email account (which is how I've been testing) it doesn't seem to work. but when I text from a cell I think it works. Oh well, I'll either follow up with a dev or not : )
hey guys searched but did not find the answer....
I just got the Tmobile g2 and im new to android OS, had a TP2 before. How can I set the MMS message of a contact to stay on longer? When I view a picture message it just stays on for a couple seconds then goes right back to the text message. Is there any setting that I can make this longer?
Also is there a setting somewhere that can make it so that when I click the contact's picture, it will dial that contact automatically? I had this feature in my TP2 and would love to set it up like that.
Thanks in advance all
I would recommend downloading chompsms. I just did this for the first time last week and it blows away the standard android sms app.

Thanks for the reply, I was able to find the answers to both question. I downloaded the Handcent sms app and so far loving it, i'll give chompsms a try.
SMS notification bug
Hello, I wonder if some one here have same problem: Some times my HTC Desire Z with latest ROM doesn't want to notify me that sms is received, and I should randomly go in to Messages folder and find out there that there are some unread messages. It is not a Settings problem, because it is happening randomly. Let's assume every 10 or 15 message will be missed. Also, If i see that there are unread messages, i can read them from Messages folder, not from notification bar. And if I do so, notification in notification bar will not disappear, until i clear it manually... really strange. Thanks for solutions.

The length of each slide is decided when composing the MMS. If the sender sets it to 7 seconds (5 is default) then it will only be on for 7s. Save the attachment and you can view it for longer.

Desire Z
I have the same issue and it wasnt this way on the vibrant or the original MyTouch 3G. When someone sends an MMS, say a picture message, it shows up as a short 10 second video. I have tried saving as an attachment but didnt seem to allow me to do that.
I have a problem when people send me MMS from an email or if they use one of those "free text app" on their iPod and it uses an email to send MMS to my phone number.
I'll get the notification in the bar from the correct sender(the email address) and it'll say Picture Message. I tap on the notification and it takes me to the messaging app where its there in my list of conversations for a split second, then disapears. I can't get it to stay, or show me the message. It's like the messaging app is deleting it before I get a chance to open it.
How do I fix this?
Attached in an example notification. When I tap on it. It's in my conversation list and vanishes before I can go into that particular message.

Trying to find an app for quick replying to sms messages. I installed sMs popular from the play store and it works except the messages still show unread. Also the contact pictures don't show up. Anyone know of a better app to use?

sms popup
i really liked the one from cm10 tho
Sliding Messaging is great for anyone coming from AOSP ROMs with the expanding notifications, quick reply/mark read, and breathing status bar notifications.
I had to manually edit the MMS APN settings within the app to get it fully functional, but now I'm able to send/receive MMS + group MMS perfectly.
I use GoSMS Pro, but SMS Popup works great as a standalone app.

I see the same generic icon when I get an email or text. I can change the sound I get but is it poosible to change the icon to be different for email than texts? I had this on my old droid charge but cant seem to find where to change it on this phone.
I swicthed to Nova launcher but I am not rooted or anything.
Thanks!
You could use an alternate mail app, or use an app which'll notify you of a new SMS and turn off the stock SMS notifications. Take a look at "SMS popup", you can use it for SMS notification without using the popup thing.
