Please don't flame me here. I'm just trying to understand.
I understand that with custom kernels and ROMs you can bring new features to phones. The only ones I currently know of are wifi tether (already supported by our kernel), temperature sensor readings, and other low-level hardware access. What else can a custom kernel do for us?
People have created ROMs for the DX that remove what people hate most about MOTO phones; Blur! So why is this such a big deal?
Id like to know also, along with the bootstrap.
A unlocked bootloader allows a custom kernel, in which we can use to make and compile very custom roms. For example, true AOSP, MIUI, and Cyanogenmod need a custom kernel to run.

It would allow us to get android os updates even after moto and/or Verizon discontinue update support for our device. Would also allow us to get these os updates sooner. E.g. I was running froyo (2.2) on my OG Droid long before moto decided to release an official froyo update....because the OG Droid's bootloader was unlocked and I was able to install a permanent custom recovery.

I can understand the updates after no longer being supported. I guess the bootloader isn't of any concern to me. I usually update my device yearly, and custom ROMs tend to be too buggy or lacking certain features I like to be messing with. Thanks for the info.
coming from a blackberry for the longest time i love the fact that i can do an actual backup of my entire system with it. comes in handing if your like me and you seem to f up your phone a lot or make and ins claim for a new one. sharing roms to get a better experience from your phone is great too. imo this is the greatest breakthrough on dx

If I root my samsung fascinate... am I able to continuously update to the newer version of Android? Or does it require additional assistance from the good people of XDA? thank you in advance
Most likely will either not accept update or will lose root upon update.
That's what happened last time.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
so if new updates from google android comes out, even if I root the phone i can't just go and download the new version?
If all you do is install apparently that require root access, you should be fine. You'll just lose root access, and have to re-root afterward. If, however, you remove factory apps like Bing, or do any other OS modifications like the lag fix, there's a much bigger chance that the official updates will either fail, or cause problems. In that case, you either need to revert to stock before updating, or rely on xda developers to roll out customized versions of the updates that you can apply with your modifications in place.

So, the "official update" from say verizon will not work as well if I remove all the bloat ware... however, a rooted phone will be able to take in updates from Google ANdroid...like 2.3 or 3.3 etc... with no issues?
Perhaps to clarify a little further, I wish to purchase the Fascinate and root it. In the future, as new Android versions come out, I would rather take the official Android versions by Google instead of the updates by Verizon. Much like the Tmobile G1, is this possible once rooted?
I understand this is rather a long post so I appreciate all the help. Thank you.
There are no Google updates vs. OEM updates released through the carriers. All updates are carrier-released, regardless of the source (OEM OR Google), and are model-specific, largely due to OEM OS customizations and differing hardware. The only phones that get pure Google updates OTA (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) are the ones that are released with a 100% stock Android ROM from the factory.
The only OTA updates you will get for the Fascinate will be from Verizon, and will require a stock ROM, and most likely will need all original apps in place. If you want the pure Google updates, you will need to install a custom ROM with those updates.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Oh, and just to clarify, if you install a custom ROM that gives you pure stock Android, you will have to rely on the developer of that ROM to release updated versions that include the latest updates from Google. There are no OTA updates for custom ROMs, as they are not supported by Google, your carrier, or the phone manufacturer.

The only phone that truly gets untouched virgin updates would be the Nexus One, and even then the drivers are added by HTC.
The Moto Droid I guess would be the next one to also, but its been so long since I used a purely stock version that I remember if Moto adds apps at Verizon's request.
All carriers request what features/bloatware to install/not install. They send said requests to OEM, which turns around and incorporates the requests, and adds their custom branding/widgets/etc to send back to the carrier for testing. The carrier then has its own internal testing to verify requests and make sure no new prevalent bugs pop up. No one at Verizon (or any carrier really) actually does any coding of any kind.
What the OEM's receive from Google may be what you consider a "pure ROM" with "hooks" built in so that the various OEM's can add their custom homescreen, bloatware, brand specific widgets, etc. But, with the source being released most likely what happens is that this job now falls upon the OEM's themselves to write in their own "hooks", as Google just pumps out strictly OS generic builds into the ASOP.
In which case, either Sammy or Moto or whoever pulls that and fixes whatever issues, or they have internal builds going (which is more likely) that they tinker with to fix issues.
I believe Moto does this as evidenced by the lettering of the builds. Seems like they go through builds nightly when they are working on an update for a phone. I wouldn't be surprised if Sammy was the same way.
Sorry to make this post so long. Hope this helps.
So, a phone has to be "rooted" to allow full control over the phone. In this mode, I am allowed to make changes to the phone such as downloading ROMS that imitates the basic stock version of say the Froyo 2.2 In the future if a new version arrives, I can expect the upgrade from either Verizon (which I will have to unroot) or hope that the good people of XDA find ways to put new version of the Android in to my already rooted phone.
So, if I have a android phone and if the hardware is popular enough, people will continue finding ways to put new Android versions on the rooted phones through ROM. I hope I am understanding this matter correctly...
If that is the case, I now will go search in the threads for a way to root the Fascinate and find a ROM that lets me have the stock version of Android. I am very satisfied with the great people on this thread and I am very thankful for your responses and patience. Thank you very much.
Yes. You've got it down for the most part. If you root there are methods to unroot that will allow you to download the ota update. But with any luck the devs will get the froyo build long before it gets officially released and will be properly rooted by then.

Well root is not permanent yet, but it just means we have to wait a while longer for a rooting method/package to be released. Good news all around. Now to unlock that SOB of a bootloader....

Sorry but bootloader unlock doesn't seem likely....as of right now most Moto's don't take too kindly to touching partitions other than data, system, and cache....

Yeah, I'm aware. And Moto includes a mean bootloader on their hardware. Custom ROMers are likely to have to get going on 2nd Init if they want any chance of seeing something custom on this bad boy
BTW @Indirect Thanks for your work on getting root. Much appreciated.
Honestly I'm not so concerned with the bootloader. Root will be nice just to do some minor tweaks. But I (and maybe it's just me) have no interest in flashing custom software. It's already very stock-like, and I wouldn't want to lose the features the X brings with something like CM or AOKP.
A custom recovery would be nice for backup purposes, but we have an FXZ, do we not? I know the Droids do... If we have an FXZ, I'm not too worried about even having a custom recovery. In other words, I'd be perfectly happy with root access without the unlocked BL.
I'm thinking about selling my s4 for a vzw Moto x now that we can root it but I'm not sure that's enough for me if it can't be rom'd. I have cm10.2 on my s4 and love being able to have the newest version of android but more than that I like the customization cm brings, like swiping from the top right shows my quick toggles, and I have the toggles customized just how I like. I'm not sure I'm ready to lose features like that. But I like the size of the x so much better than the s4.
Even without an unlocked bootloader, it will still likely be able to be so custom roms. It'll probably just rely on something like safestrap or bootstrap which have been used on other Moto phones with locked bootloaders. We've got some awesome devs that can do some amazing things.

Do custom roms mean losing the touchless control (using dedicated core) and active display abilities? I didn't think about losing those features in a custom rom, I really love them. Are they possible to port over to a custom rom?

Custom Roms built from a factory image(my favorite) will have all the moto x features unless the Dev intentionally breaks them. I plan to build using this method. I never released my ROM for the S3 since scrosler had such a great debloat ROM out.

Looking forward to rooting my Moto X. Personally, I want to stick to the stock rom. It is nearly perfect. However, I do want to see the bootloader cracked because when 4.3 comes to our phone we are likely to lose root without a way of getting it back without a custom recovery.
Some of you may want to look at the Moto X development sub-forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45545389
My S4 got fried. When I got it fixed, I found that it was upgraded to a newer build which has Knox. Therefore, I cannot use custom recovery or flash AOSP ROMs anymore. I cant stand Touchwiz.
I was thinking of selling my S4 and going for an S5 but it appears that no AOSP ROMs have not been released yet and development has ceased because of issues with GPS and Camera. The GPE version which can help with ROM development also has not been released yet and its release appears unlikely as time goes by. This phone was released back in April and I dont know if I can expect a stable AOSP ROM to be ever released - As the phone gets older, it gets more unlikely that someone will have the interest to fix these issues. Anyone share these concerns - any related thoughts - Is the S5 worth buying?
Development has not stalled, stop creating drama. This is a great phone all around so it was worth getting before root even occurred. Get the M8 if you can't be bothered...

GPS and Camera issues? No. And the development hasn't stalled, but is definitely more moderated than older phones. And you will not see ANY AOSP roms until the bootloader is unlocked(likely never). You have to use safestrap so you will only have Touchwiz roms.

To add to what was said above, Knox is not the problem. The locked bootloader put in place on the Verizon and At&T variants is the problem. The T-Mobile and Sprint Galaxy S5s also have Knox, but their bootloaders are unlocked. So users of those models are free to flash whatever ROMs are available for their variants.
And the root exploit has been patched. So maybe not the best phone if you can't stand TW/absolutely can't stand not running a custom ROM unless you can get one that has not had the patch installed.

FWIW I've been running custom ROM's since my old original Moto Droid and felt the same way. I finally took the plunge yesterday and paid full retail for the S5 (unlimited data plan)... I've got root and SuperSU with knox dis-abled, so I can freeze/delete anything I want and Foxfi lets me broadcast wifi tether. This phone is pretty well fantastic as it is. Even though some features are nice I ain't so sure I am even gonna mess with it. The phone is THAT good IMO....

As for AOSP ROMs. I have never had success with any AOSP ROM on my Moto Maxx HD, or my Sammy S4 Developer Edition and I tried every AOSP ROM available for them. In every case battery life was bad, or camera wasn't right or did not work, or GPS would not work or hold the sync, or they got real laggy after a few days or data would come and go. It didn't make a difference which ROM, there was always something that wasn't quite right. In the case of my S4, it always ran better on a TW based ROM.
I have an S5 Developer Edition now. Based on my previous experience with AOSP ROMs, I'm not holding my breath for a AOSP ROM that performs any better on my S5 than they did on my S4 because I don't think they'll ever get there.
There is root and SafeStrap for the S5 retail version now, as you already know. From most accounts the S5 performs very nicely with the TW based ROMs available...and so does my S5 Dev Edition. I'm not sure what it is about TW that you don't like but the S5 is a great phone whether you flash a custom ROM or not.

The exploit has been patched, but the S5 has not received an update. So there is a chance the warranty replacement you receive may be ok, as long as the kernel is before June 3.

i did the same thing back in January and i'm kicking myself in the ass for not doing a lot more research first. samsung software has got to be the worst, thats why this phone has 3 gb ram. use towel root and at least get root access to shut half the ****ty software off. the custom roms for this phone are just rework versions of bloatwiz.
That blows... has anyone been working on it ?

The likelihood that our bootloader will even be unlocked or that any real development will go into kexec allowing us to flash custom kernels is probably close to 0%, meaning there will not be a cyanogenmod for retail N3.
However, if you are looking for a closer to AOSP rom check out Eclipse Rom. The dev has put much coding into the rom to make it feel like AOSP, it's not without its faults but what rom is perfect?
Also the devs for Alliance Rom have said they will be releasing an AOSP version in the future and many people are looking forward to that.
With practically any rom you will find yourself uninstalling a lot of bloatware unless you are one of the few who bought a Samsung device to use the proprietary software.
Either way, have fun.
Since we have a mostly stable root... why are there only 2 custom roms??
After being locked out of my s6, I was so excited this phone had root... just don't understand

Because there are not many options as we can only use stock 6.0.1 base with the locked bootloader that uses the engineering kernel. If we could use any kernel it would be a WAY different story.
Thanks for the insight. Did not realize the engineering kernel was so restricted. I came from an HTC one prior, and we had lots of roms based off the base kernel, but I am a jafu so my knowledge is limited.

You COULD be stuck with a MTK tablet; the only MTK devices getting any love are phablets and phones for the most part (and those are mostly in the MEAR: Middle East, Asia, and Russia). My Lenovo A7-30F (not the A3000 or A3300) has two recoveries (one each for KitKat and Lollipop) and no custom ROMs at all; my GNex (which is far older) has more ROMs just for KitKat (let alone Lollipop, Marshmallow, and Nougat).
The LG G3 was nice because there was an exploit (and it hasn't been patched to this day) that allows you to have what is called a "bumped" TWRP so you can flash all sorts of custom ROMs, including AOSP-based ROMs, as well as custom kernels. That was a nice feature of the LG G3 on VZW. Not sure why they never patched the exploit. I do miss those days, but I did stop rooting and such because I could still get really good battery life. Plus, Android Pay was a nice feature I liked using and now with the S7, I absolutely love Samsung Pay. Makes life so much easier when I check out not having to pull out my wallet, fumble and find the credit/debit card, swipe, etc. Just tap and pay! Nice!
